Chapter 57 It was mid-January by the time Rick and Kyle had the adoption hearing. Rhonda had already been sentenced, and was appearing via video. Rick and Will decided to hold off changing Kyle's name for the time being, believing that Rhonda would call the whole proceeding off if she even suspected that Will was back in her son's life. The hearing itself was lengthy. Rebecca had to present evidence and call in witnesses establishing Rick as a respected member of the community, made enough money to support Kyle and Charlie, was a good parent to Kyle, and other such hoops. Even with Rhonda supporting it, the Family Court judge seemed to drag things out. Rebecca kept assuring Rick that it was all procedure and the judge was just doing her job; however, Rick couldn't help but wonder if he would've had to go through all of it if he were a woman and not a single father. Kyle was called to the stand by the judge. "Kyle, tell me what you like best about Rick?" The judge asked. "He loves me," Kyle replied simply. "He accepts me for who I am, and has never once asked me to be anything other than me. I can trust him with my secrets, my fears and my life." "That's very profound," the judge said, impressed. "Most children usually say that they like what they can get or get away with, so it's nice to hear something deep and meaningful for change." "It's just the truth," Kyle said, smiling at Rick, who had a look of deep pride on his face. "So, tell me what you don't like about Rick?" Kyle paused. He never even considered not liking Rick, even when Rick slapped him, Kyle never stopped liking his dad. "I can't think of anything," Kyle said, at a loss. "So, he's never done anything that upset you?" "Yeah, I mean, when he made me eat broccoli that one time, I was mad at him, but it's just stuff like that, so I don't think that really counts." "Has he ever hurt you?" "Hurt me? Like my feelings?" The judge contemplated her words then asked, "Has Rick ever physically, mentally, emotionally or sexually hurt you?" "Objection, Your Honor," called out Rebecca. "This is a custody hearing not a criminal investigation. If the Court has evidence of a crime, then Your Honor needs to report it to the District Attorney. This hearing cannot be used as a fishing expedition." "Sustained," the judge said. "You don't have to answer that question, Kyle." "I will," Kyle said with confidence. "My dad has never, ever abused me in any way." "Glad to hear it," the judge said. The hearing concluded with both Rick and Rhonda being asked questions in the same vein, but the judge was better behaved and didn't ask about any potential abuse. In the end, the judge approved the adoption and signed the documents. "What the hell was she playing at?" Rick asked, incredulously after the hearing. "I don't know," Rhonda replied. "She should've known better than to ask that question. Maybe other lawyers have let her get away with it in the past." "Well, it's bullshit. I should file a complaint or something." "We could, but to be honest, it wouldn't really go anywhere. She sustained the objection, and Kyle answered it voluntarily, so there isn't anything that would come of it." "It's still bullshit," Rick conceded. "Will we have to go through that again with Ry?" "You might," Rebecca said. "There are only two Family Court judges, so you have a fifty-fifty chance; plus, since you have no familial ties to Ry, the scrutiny will be worse." "I've already had some visits from Child Protective Services. They came out to the house to make sure everything was kosher," Rick said, a little bitter. "The next time that happens, give me a call, and I'll try to show up." "Okay. So far, they've only looked in on the condition of the house, and how we plan to accommodate Ry and his disabilities. They only asked the tough questions the first day." "Was Will around?" Rebecca asked, a hint of apprehension in her tone. "No," Rick said, flatly. "I've asked him to stop coming around while we're being looked at. The last thing I need is for CPS to know that a convicted sex offender comes over and hangs out. Losing Ry would be the least of my worries." "Very true," Rebecca agreed. "What about getting my name changed?" Kyle interjected, wanting to take the conversation way from his biological father. "Will I have to answer a lot of questions, too?" "Actually, it's pretty easy," Rebecca said. "After you put up a notice about your name change, you pay the filing fee and have a quick hearing. The judge will ask why you want the name change. Regardless of how you answer, you'll most likely get the name change. They only ever say no for stupid requests." "That seems fair," Kyle said. Rebecca left after helping Rick and Kyle fill-out the notice Kyle needed to change his name. Father and son drove to Kyle's favorite restaurant to pick up dinner. "Kyle," Rick said, as they got back into the truck. "We need to discuss how and when we tell your mom about Will and your name change." "What do you mean?" Kyle said, eating a piece of garlic bread he sneaked from the bag. "We're going to have to submit a visitation form, so you can see your mom in prison, which means you'll need to put your legal name on it. If she sees your new name on it without knowing first--" "--She'll freak out," Kyle finished. He took a deep breath and sighed. "Yeah, I get it, and she's going to be mad no matter what." "So, don't you think it's best that she hears it from you first, before she sees it on a form?" "Yeah," Kyle mumbled. Despite the drama in life from everything else, Kyle felt that it was nice to not have to deal with his mother and her quick temper. Ry was sitting up but looking tired. Charlie was cuddled up next to him, while Will set up a cake, plastic flatware and paper plates. There were balloons and a small, hand painted sign of congratulations near the door. Given Ry's age, he was given a single room, reluctantly. An administrator wanted to charge for double occupancy, but Will threatened litigation if a dirty old man made any kind of advance towards Ry. In the end, a compromise was reached. "How do you fee'w?" Ry asked Kyle. His speech therapy was coming along nicely, Kyle thought. "About the same as before," Kyle said, passing around take out containers from the local Italian restaurant. "He did great," Rick said. "The judge was asking some very unfair questions, but Kyle managed to get through them like a champ." "Glad to hear it," Will said with a grin. "Was Rhonda at all suspicious?" "Not that I could tell," Rick said, pulling up a chair next to the table. "As far as I know, she doesn't think anything was off. I'm sure she would've called the whole thing off if she did." "True," Will conceded. Once dinner was done, Will handed out cake and punch. Ry was able to feed himself with some assistance from Charlie. Ry explained all the physical therapy he was doing everyday, and hoped to be home in a couple of months. "I can't wait to have all my boys under one roof again," Rick said. "I just want life to go back to normal, you know?" "Wha'sh norm'ol?" Ry asked. Rick wasn't sure if it was a joke or not, so he said, "Oh, you know, all three of you in school, doing your homework, fighting, getting grounded, that sort of thing." "I don' ge' gwounded," Ry said, smugly. "Really? I guess you're grounded." "Wha' fo'w?!" Ry asked. "Being a goody two shoes," Rick said with a dismissive shug, then laughed at Ry's sour look. Later that night, Kyle was laying in his bed thinking about how his life had changed so much over the past seven months. It only seemed like the previous day that Rick asked him to mow the lawn. It then dawned on him that, had Rick mowed the lawn instead, he never would've had sex with Dan, he might have stayed best friends with Cody, not become friends with Ry, his mother wouldn't be in prison, he never would've known Will, and Dan wouldn't have tried raping him. However, he probably wouldn't have come out of the closet, Dan would've been out molesting more children, Charlie wouldn't be traumatized, and "Ry might be dead," Kyle said aloud, his words hitting him like a load of bricks. He wouldn't have Ry as a brother...or a boyfriend. He also wouldn't have had sex with Rick, either, let alone have been adopted by the love of his young life. Thinking about how something so mundane, so innocuous, such as mowing a lawn, could have such profound effects on people's lives, It was almost too much for his brain to handle. A soft knock at his door, brought Kyle out of his mind-blowing contemplation. The door opened and Rick poked his head in. "Alright if I come in?" "Always," Kyle said, not bothering to hide his naked form. Rick came in, careful to not open the door too wide, before closing it behind him. He was only wearing a pair of boxers. He sat next to his son, took Kyle's left hand in his and began to rub it with his thumb. "I just wanted to check on my son before bed." Kyle chuckled, "Dad, a piece of paper doesn't mean I wasn't your son before today." Kyle smiled at his dad. "It does, actually," Rick said. "Until today, there was always the chance I could lose you. You have no idea how scary that's been over the last 10 years." "Maybe not ten years, but I was worried after mom went to jail. But, even if we didn't live together, you would always be my dad. You will always be my dad." "And you will always be my son," Rick said, tearing up with how much love he felt for Kyle. "I love you, Kyle. I always have, and I always will." "I love you, too, Dad, and I always will." Rick leaned in and kissed Kyle, who met him halfway. The kiss was the most passionate they had experienced yet. It was slow and intimate. The passion was simple and caring, each conveying to the other that, no matter what happened, they would be together for eternity. Rick ran his hand through Kyle's hair to the back of his son's head to support him during the embrace, while Kyle put a hand to Rick's cheek, cupping it, and gently caressing his dad lovingly. Their kiss was interrupted by a knock at the door. "Dad?" Charlie called from the other side. "Are you coming to bed yet?" There was a hint of fear in the boy's voice, which made it difficult to be upset. "I'll be there in a second, Little Man," Rick called. "I wanted to say goodnight to your brother." The door opened and Kyle, with great haste, managed to cover himself and his dripping erection just in time, as the form of his little brother came in. Kyle made a note to thank Ry again for helping break Charlie of his habit of not knocking before entering. Charlie was in his pajamas and holding a bear identical to the one the boy had bought their older brother a few weeks prior. Rick called Charlie over and hugged his youngest, though he kept the boy off of his lap for practical reasons. Charlie wasn't screaming as much as he had when he was first brought home, but he still couldn't sleep by himself and night time was especially bad for him. Once Kyle felt he was safe, he moved over and pulled his brother into the bed with him. Charlie welcomed the rare moment of affection from his elder brother and cuddled up to him. Rick felt heart-happy, seeing his boys being sweet and kind to each other. He knew it wouldn't last, so he made sure to mentally capture every second he could. Charlie fell asleep quickly in Kyle's arms, so Rick decided to leave the boys where they were. He did help Kyle put on a pair of boxers, so Charlie wouldn't wake up feeling awkward, wondering how and why Kyle was naked. Rick kissed Charlie on the head and Kyle on the lips, before heading off to get the first full night's sleep he'd had in weeks. ***Coming Soon, Chapter 58***
