Thanks again for reading! *** Chapter Thirty four: (It's still Kaiden talking.) I will never forget my first night with Tyler, and I think all of us were relieved that things turned out the way they did with the supposed intruder. To this day, though, Chris swears he saw someone go into that bedroom. I don't know ... maybe there really WAS something to all the stories about the old house being haunted. I didn't know then, and I still don't know today. It sure made for a good tale, however ... and, our encounter with the mysterious visage only added fuel to the fire about a possible ghost. Over the years, whenever conversation has turned to the old homestead, it's been fun to tease Chris about how frightened my big, strong brother was that night! As the next school week began, the date for Eric's custody hearing came and went ... but nothing happened. From what I understood, the lawyers talked with the judge, and everything was postponed. None of us kids knew whether that was a good sign or a bad one, though our dads seemed enthusiastic at how things were going. Even at the age of 13, I could tell that our legal system moved at a snail's pace, most of the time ... and, sometimes, decisions that were supposed to be in the best interest of the child, didn't always seem that way to me. All of us had our fingers crossed that things worked out well for Eric! November was a month for birthdays, it seemed: Tim turned 34 on the first; Robert was 17 on the fourth; and our new friend, Colton, turned 16 on the tenth. There were fun times all around. Colton even asked his folks if he could celebrate his birthday on the J bar A ... and they agreed! Maybe his mom wasn't such a mean person, after all. No doubt about it, our ranch had become party central! I guess it was a good thing that we had fun with the parties, because the Panthers lost their first playoff game. Man, that sucked big time ... all the guys were SO down. But, like they say, I guess, there was always next year. Us younger guys would all be in high school next season; I know, we'd only be on the freshman team, but still, we'd be a part of the Panther tradition. And I just knew we'd go all the way when I was a starter on the varsity squad. By the middle of November, the photo studio was up and running. Both Tim and Ben were chomping at the bit, as the last elements fell into place. They had been sending out feelers for weeks, hoping to get clients. Fortunately, Josh knew a lot of people, and he wasn't shy about wielding his influence. Dad's Missouri studio had been used mostly for portraits, weddings, and the like; he had just begun to branch out into commercial work when we decided to move. The new studio ... what with two full-time photographers ... was planned to be multifaceted from the onset. The Missouri company ... that our dads had bought the cameras and studio lights from ... installed everything on the Wednesday after Colton's weekend party. After school that day, as we approached the ranch, we could tell something momentous had occurred. "Hey, check it out!" Tyler exclaimed, turning on the blinker, as our pickup slowed. "What?" Eric questioned, leaning forward to get a better view through the windshield. "That dorky sign Dad made," Tyler laughed, shaking his head. All of us noticed it then. For the first time, lights illuminated the simple, but elegant (I didn't think it looked dorky at all) sign Ben had constructed for the turnoff to our ranch road ... 'J bar A Photography'. The dark green letters boldly stood out against the cream-colored background during daylight hours, but, against the rapidly darkening sky, they really popped when lit. In an hour or two, after it was full-dark, I bet it would be even more impressive. "Looks like they're FINALLY in business," Chris added. "ALL of us are in business, now," Tyler agreed, braking the Tacoma to a stop, as he waited for oncoming traffic to pass. At the time, none of us knew how prophetic those words would be, but, in one way or another, all us guys helped to shape the fledgling business into what it was to become. Around the dinner table that night, the photo studio was the main topic of discussion ... as it has been many times since then. I'm sure proud I can say that I was the first guy photographed in the new studio. Okay ... okay ... so I wasn't a paying customer, but I was the first, anyway. While family portraits would come later, all of us had an opportunity to sit in front of the camera. By the end of the weekend, everybody had his or her picture made. I suppose the free sittings allowed our dads to get familiar with how everything worked, but we got some fun portraits out of the deal, too! As we went to bed on Thursday night, the TV weatherman was talking about snow at higher and middle elevations ... snow that would last this time. We might even get a couple inches in the flatlands. Among a lot of kids at school, there was talk of skiing, or snowboarding, over the weekend. Of course, I'd never skied or snowboarded before, but, let me tell you, I wanted to learn how in the worst way. The lessons would have to wait, however, because the second major cold snap of the season happened Friday night. Was it ever a doozy, too, with single digit temperatures! The next morning, Josh woke Eric and me before it was really light outside. "Up and at 'em boys!" he declared over and over again, his loud voice becoming our alarm clock. As I rolled over and tried to open my eyes, Eric replied, "Wha - what's going on, anyway?" The ceiling lights were on, and Josh stood at the foot of the bed in his bathrobe. "You guys can go back to bed later, if you want," Josh answered, matter-of-factly, "but the cattle need water to drink, and they depend on us to give it to them. Everything's iced-over this morning." "No way," I said, yawning and rubbing my eyes tiredly. "Oh, yes ... a BIG way," Josh stated, with gleeful wickedness, it seemed. "Now, out of bed ... and dress warmly. It feels like winter has arrived early this year!" As my naked body slid from beneath the covers, I shivered. 'Damn! Doesn't Josh heat the house in cold weather?' I wondered, but didn't say. Hurriedly, Eric and I pulled on jeans and grabbed sweatshirts from the drawer. I slipped the fleecy garment over my head, before struggling with the sleeves; Eric, on the other hand, gracefully slid his arms and head into the oversized sweatshirt in one motion. Next time, I'd have to try putting one on that way. Yawning, I ran my fingers through my bed-head of shaggy hair, as I glanced toward Josh. He was still standing at the foot of the bed, waiting for us to put on socks and shoes. I hadn't noticed before, but his obviously hard dick tented the flannel robe obscenely. Immediately, my cock began to throb and swell at the sight of our dad like that. "You two make quite a pair," he commented, in a faraway sounding voice. "I wish..." His fingers brushed over the head of his cloth-covered pole, seemingly bringing him back to reality. Josh blinked his eyes and shook his head, clearing it, I suppose, before smiling in that fatherly way of his. With an evil grin, I asked, "What'cha talkin' about, anyway?" Although, being the horny guy I am, I was sure I already knew. "Maybe I'll tell you later," he laughed. "Right now, you two put on coats and work gloves and meet Roy in his office. He'll teach you guys how to break up the ice." "You mean that Kaiden and I have to ALWAYS go out in the mornings and do this?" Eric questioned. I don't know where he came up with that idea, but, damn ... I sure hoped it wasn't true! "Are both of you volunteering?" Josh replied, chuckling. "Because I'm sure the other guys would be happy to let you two do it every day." "Not me!" I exclaimed, shaking my head, as I pulled last year's winter coat from the closet. Josh opened his arms for both of us; I dropped the coat, and, gladly, both Eric and I accepted his invitation to hug. He gave both of us a kiss, before continuing, "Actually, boys, I want all you guys to take turns. That'll make it easier on everybody." He smiled. "This time of year, we get mornings below freezing, from time to time. But give it a month, or so, and the temperature will drop below freezing just about every day ... until spring rolls around, that is." With a final squeeze, dad relaxed his hug. Eric and I donned our coats ... mine was WAY too small ... and the two of us hurried down the stairs to see what joys awaited us. Man, it WAS cold out, and just light enough that the dusk to dawn lights had turned off. As we crossed the yard, which was dusted with snow, the clouds of steam were so heavy it was almost as if our breath froze right in front of our faces! I figured it would just be Eric and me breaking ice that morning; but, as we approached the barn, I was really surprised to hear several voices in Roy's office, talking and laughing, above the metallic whirring of his ancient space heater. Eric opened the plywood door to the ranch foreman's office. Bright light and toasty air spilled from the tiny room. "There you two are," Roy greeted us, the laugh lines in his weathered face striking their familiar pose. The office was crowded with guys; all us teens, who were new to the ranch, were there. Quickly assessing the situation, I supposed that since Luke, Robert, and the twins weren't there, they must have already known the routine. Anyway, Eric squeezed into the room, but I just stood in the open doorway. "Don't just stand there letting all the heat out," Roy drawled. "Come on inside, Kaiden." "Um, sure; I'll try," I replied. It was a tight fit, but I made it! Looking around, I added, "I didn't know all you guys would be out here this morning." Roy chuckled. "I told Josh I only wanted to give this lesson one time," he informed us, while pushing back his chair and standing. He zipped his coat. "A couple of you boys grab sledgehammers and put them in the back of my pickup. Two of you can ride up front with me, if you want, and the rest of you climb into the bed." Cole and Chris detoured to get the mauls, while Eric and Ryan climbed into the cab with Roy. By the time Tyler and I had hunkered-down in the pickup bed, Chris and Cole arrived with a couple of very heavy-looking implements. They laid them in the pickup bed, closed the tailgate, and climbed aboard. As they were taking their seats, Roy started the engine; and, moments later, we were off. The bulls and cows would be overwintering in separate fields, but the view at both watering ponds was the same: puzzled cattle standing around looking for something to drink. I guess they didn't know that water turns to ice when the temperature is cold enough ... or maybe they didn't care ... they just knew what they needed and couldn't find. Anyway, both small ponds were completely frozen over. Cole and Tyler wielded the heavy sledgehammers first; since the ice was thin, it seemed to break easily, revealing the water beneath. It was all they could do to get out of the way of the bellowing cattle, as they rushed to the newly opened drinking supply. "That's the way," Roy affirmed, with a nod of his head toward my brothers. "Now let someone else have a turn." Cole handed his sledge to Chris, while Tyler gave his to Ryan. "Won't it just freeze again?" Ryan asked the question that was probably on all our minds. "Yep, that's what water does," a smiling Roy answered, "but this will give the cattle a chance to get a drink. Moving water doesn't freeze as easily; and the cattle, drinking, will help keep it from icing over for a while." Somehow, the cattle near the pond had communicated to the others that there was water to be had. Maybe all the mooing had sent a message to the rest of the herd, but, whatever the reason, the small herd had doubled in size since we arrived, with more cattle arriving by the second. Eric and I took our turns with the mauls. Roy continued, "Usually, this time of year, after the sun comes up, we don't have to worry much about refreezing. When it gets colder, though, a cowboy will be out two or three times a day to keep the water open." He paused for a couple of seconds, while glancing at the mostly cloudy sky. "I think it might refreeze today, though, 'cause it's so cold, and we don't have much sun." He chuckled. "Any volunteers to come back out here after lunch to check on things?" It wasn't like all of us jumped at the opportunity. "I will," Eric said, breaking the silence. "But ... it's sure a long ways to walk carrying this thing." He glanced at the dripping sledgehammer in his hands, and, as he was speaking, a strong gust of arctic wind broke the morning stillness, sending shivers throughout my body. In weather like this, my old winter coat wasn't going to cut it for long! The water froze to the heavy, steel maul. "Yeah, Eric ... it is a fer piece," Roy agreed. He seemed to consider things for a moment, before continuing, "Think you can drive the ATV?" "I KNOW I can," a beaming Eric replied. No way! Why didn't I think of that? "Hey ... I'll come with you, Eric," I added, smiling. Maybe I'd get a chance to drive it, too. "I guess that settles it then," Roy stated, surveying the pond with satisfaction. "Now let's head to the bulls' field." The way things worked out over the next few months, unless the temperature was mild, very early every morning, someone had to break-up the ice. That job fell to us teens every weekend; though, every so often, we had to take a turn on weekday mornings, too. Everyone knew which days were his, because our names were written on the calendar in Roy's office. Since it was a very important task, we got into the habit of checking the calendar every Friday evening before going to bed. I don't think any of us really enjoyed the job, but none of us wanted to be the guy responsible for making the cattle go thirsty on our watch. Breaking up the ice wasn't nearly so easy in the dead of winter, though. And, even though most of us grumbled among ourselves when we saw it was our turn, I think all of us were secretly glad to have been given the responsibility. As things turned out, normal daily warming ... along with the cattle drinking from it ... kept the pond mostly open that mid-November morning. The stiff north wind was still cold, though, when Eric and I drove back after lunch. Although we didn't need to, we swung the sledges a few times anyway, burying the heads in the muck at the waters edge. Muddy water splashed high in the air, some of it getting on our old coats and jeans. I did get to take a turn behind the wheel of the ATV ... from the pond back to the barn. Like all guys my age, I just wanted to drive; it didn't matter what. I suppose, since they were probably boys once themselves, our dads, and the other adult men around the J bar A, used that knowledge to their advantage over the years. But, hey, I sure didn't complain about it. I parked the vehicle outside the tool shed, and Eric and I deposited our sledgehammers inside. "Kaiden, what do you wanna do this afternoon?" Eric asked, silhouetted in the open doorway of the tool barn. "I wanna cum inside you a couple of times," I answered truthfully, causing my boyfriend to giggle. "Sounds like a lot of fun," he replied, in what I recognized as his lust-filled voice. As we stood in the doorway, talking, Ryan bounded from the kitchen door and trotted across the back yard to the stables. Laughing, and nodding in the direction of Ryan, I asked, "I wonder where HE'S going in such a hurry?" "You think maybe to jackoff in front of the horses?" Eric chuckled. "Could be," I agreed. No matter how much sex he was getting, Ryan was always in need of a good cum. "Let's check on him and find out ... okay?" "Sure," Eric answered. Smiling broadly, he took a step toward the horse barn. "Hold up," I said, laying my hand on Eric's shoulder. "Let's give him a couple of minutes, first." "Yeah ... right," Eric replied. We stood in the doorway, listening to the hum of Roy's space heater, while we waited. Sometimes it's hard to force conversation when you don't really have anything to say. But, when you're with a guy you love, there's plenty you can do besides talk. In the warmth of a momentary shaft of sunlight, Eric and I kissed passionately. Man, was my cock ever throbbing! After a little while, very reluctantly, I pulled my lips from Eric's. "We better go check on Ryan now," I said, not meaning a word of it, "if we're gonna, that is." "I guess," Eric sighed, while gazing lovingly into my eyes. He pecked me on the tip of my button nose. "Let's do it, then." Hand-in-hand, the two of us crossed the parking lot. An older car, one I couldn't remember having seen before, was parked near the door of the studio. Both of us paused, glancing at the vehicle, and then the studio. Muffled voices came from inside. While I couldn't make out the words they were saying, it sounded as if Cole was giving instructions to a couple of guys. The three of them were laughing ... like they were old friends. Wondering if Cole might have had his video camera with him, I tried the studio door ... but it was locked. Sighing, I told Eric my thoughts, as to what might be going on inside. Laughing, he rattled the door. "Hey, Cole ... is that you in there?" I called out. "Fuck!" a startled voice, I didn't recognize, answered. "Why can't we come in, anyway?" I continued. "Um, we're working in here, Kaiden," Cole replied. "Maybe I'll tell you about it later, okay?" "You'd better," Eric laughed. "Shit, two of them," another voice stated. "Don't worry; they're cool," Cole said to the guys inside the studio. "I'd let 'em watch if I could." Resignedly, I chuckled. "Come on, Eric ... it sounds like Cole's gonna be mean to us today." "I guess," Eric agreed, shrugging his shoulders, as we continued to walk toward the stable. The door to the horse barn had been left wide open, allowing some light inside, but it still took a couple of seconds for our eyes to adjust to the dimly lit interior. A horse snorted from one of the stalls down the way. "There you are, girl," Ryan answered, in a loving voice. Fuck ... it sounded like Ryan wasn't jacking off after all, unless he had a girlfriend on the side, that is. Eric and I walked in the direction of his cooing voice, to find him feeding an apple to Flame, the pregnant red mare. She was bearing a colt that would be Ryan's, after it was born next summer. "Hey, Ryan," I called out. "What's gives with Cole, anyway?" "Oh ... hey, Kaiden," he said, shaking his head. "He's got a couple of friends from college over. I think they're making porn." "Damn!" Eric replied. "I sure wish he would've left the door to the studio unlocked." "Me, too, Eric," Ryan stated, absentmindedly petting Flame's strong neck. Dejectedly, he added, "I asked him to let me watch, but he said 'no'. Something about me being too young..." None of us said anything for a moment or two. I don't know what the other two were thinking; but I was wondering why it was okay for Cole and Ryan to make love ... if Ryan was too young ... and not all right for Ryan to watch Cole making porn. Sighing, Ryan asked, "Did you two have fun on the ATV?" He smiled part way. "We took turns driving," Eric replied, before laughing, "and we got muddy at the pond." "Yeah, I can see that," Ryan answered, running his fingers through his long, brown hair. "Kaiden thought you probably came out here to jack off," Eric continued. "We were gonna join you!" Ryan chuckled. "Well, you guys know me..." As if on command, Ryan's left-pointing cock hardened in his low-slung, baggy jeans. He brushed his free hand over it, while glancing toward the tent it created. "I always need to cum." "Me, too," Eric agreed, while I smiled. "It's sure awesome being a guy," I commented, thinking of the pleasure my cock provided several times a day. Without saying another word, all three of us unzipped. After freeing our throbbing penises from their cloth jails, we pounded them hard and fast. In no time, each of us shot a load of white hot boy-jizz into the straw. "You wanna lick off my hand, girl?" Ryan asked, holding his cum-covered fingers in front of Flame's nose. The mare sniffed, but that's all. Eric, however, immediately took advantage of the opportunity, licking Ryan's fingers clean. Eric smiled. "Mmmmmm, tasty," he declared, before turning his face toward the horse. "Flame, you don't now what you just missed!" All three of us laughed, as we zipped-up.
