My Step-Brother Jacob Chapter 60 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Just as I noticed Mr. Haggerty walking toward us, I heard Jenny's distinctive voice shrilly calling my name from near the door to the restaurant. She and her date hustled over to us, arriving just seconds before Mr. Haggerty. "I'm so glad you could make it!" Jenny gushed, giving both Andy and I hugs and kisses. Then, stepping back, she also hugged and kissed Craig and Jeremy as well. "HORSE??? VAN GOGH???" I heard Steve yell, incredulously, as he and his girlfriend Cindy walked up to us. "I can't believe you guys came! This is so COOL! We've gotta get a table together!" "Excuse me for a moment," Mr. Haggerty interjected. Then indicating Craig & Jeremy and Me & Andy, he asked "May I see you four please?" "Hey Boner! Hold our place in the picture line," I said. "Sure thing Horse!" Steve said, and he and Cindy got in line. We stepped aside with Mr. Haggerty then. "Hi Mr. Haggerty, how are you?" I said. "I'm fine. Or at least I thought I was! What's the meaning of this?" he asked. "Of what?" I asked. "You know full well what I'm talking about!" Mr. Haggerty said, fixing me with a stare. "What is the meaning of bringing another boy to the ball with you as your date?" "Well sir, I know of no school rule that prohibits same-sex couples from attending the senior ball. All I'm doing is attending my Senior ball. I brought a guy with me. He might be my date, or, for all anyone knows, he could just be a friend. I'll be honest with YOU though. In our case he's my date. I believe you've met my partner Andy before. Andy, you remember Mr. Haggerty." I said. "Nice to see you again Mr. Haggerty," Andy said, smiling at him. "Yes, Hello Andy," Mr. Haggerty said. "And this is my partner, Jeremy. Jeremy, this is our principal, Mr. Haggerty," Craig said. "Nice to meet you Mr. Haggerty," Jeremy said. "I suppose. Nice to meet you too son," Mr. Haggerty said. Mr. Haggerty turned to me then and said sharply, "if there are any problems because of this, I'm going to have to ask you to leave!" "Correction," I said, looking the principal in the eye. "If there are any problems, you're going to have to ask the person or people who are causing the problems to leave. I promise you, we will not be the ones causing the problems." Mr. Haggerty glared at me for a moment. Then his look softened into almost a pleading look. Finally, looking defeated and nervous, he walked away. As we watched Mr. Haggerty walking toward the door to the restaurant, I noticed a pair of teachers, Mr. Jarvis and Mr. McElroy standing together, nearby. Rumor was they were a couple, albeit a closeted couple. Having had both of them for some classes, I fully believed the rumors. Given their close proximity to us, they had to have heard our conversation with Mr. Haggerty. I stepped over to them and said "You two could've jumped in and helped us out a little just now you know!" They both looked at me with surprised looks, then both their faces turned pink. Before either of them could say anything Steve hollered to us. "YO HORSE! You guys are up for your pics!" "Excuse us!" I said. I nudged Andy, and he followed me to where the camera was. I saw Mr. Haggerty staring at us, from a distance. Together Andy and I stepped in front of the backdrop. "One at a time," the photographer said. "But we're together!" I said. The photographer looked over the rims of his glasses at us a moment, then said, "Whatever." We posed, and a moment later, the photographer said "Good, now smile a little more!" We smiled some more, and the flash went off in our faces. "OK. Next!" The photographer said. Craig and Jeremy stepped up for their pictures then. When they were finished, the four of us headed for the restaurant door. * * * Before we reached it, we were accosted by Marc Warfield of Channel 11 News. He apparently was at the restaurant to cover the Senior Ball. "You're the guy who saved those boys and the lifeguard at the beach earlier, aren't you?" he said. "Yeah," I said, grinning sheepishly. "Boy, you sure do get around." "Yes, I do," Marc agreed, grinning. "So, now you're attending your senior ball?" "Yup," I said. He looked at me for a minute, then noticed that Andy and I had matching tuxes on. "Uh, are you two a couple?" Marc asked. "As a matter of fact, we are. This is my partner Andy," I said. Marc grinned and nodded at Andy, then he looked back at me and asked, "Have you encountered any problems by bringing Andy to the ball?" "No," I said. "Would you be willing to do a quick follow-up interview with me, right now?" he asked. I looked at Andy. He shrugged, so I said "OK." "Cool!" Marc said. He turned to his crew and within a minute, we were bathed in bright light, and Marc was standing next to me. Andy drifted off to the side a little. "Good evening! This is Marc Warfield, Channel 11 News, broadcasting live tonight from Asbury Park High School's senior ball. You may remember my exclusive interview earlier today on the beach with a young man who risked his life to swim out into shark-infested waters, during a dangerous rip-tide, to save the lives of a lifeguard and three boys, who were in trouble. Well folks, our daytime hero has traded in his swim trunks for a tux, as tonight, he's attending his senior ball. It appears though that he may become embroiled in the middle of a controversy here at the ball! John! How are you feeling now, just a few hours after this afternoon's dramatic rescue?" I smiled and looked into the camera and said, "I'm feeling fine thanks. But I'd like to clear up a couple of things. First of all, there were NO sharks in the ocean today, and the rip-tide really wasn't a very dangerous one. When I was a life guard on the same beach last summer, I encountered worse. And as for tonight's ball, there's no controversy going on." "Isn't it true though that the school's administration isn't happy with who you brought to the ball as your date?" Marc asked. "My date this evening is my partner, Andy MacDoogle. Andy, step over here a minute." I said. "I've spoken with our principal, and there are no problems." Andy nervously stepped over to me and stood next to me facing the camera, smiling shyly. "So you don't expect any problems then tonight?" Marc pressed. "No, we don't. I don't expect everyone will be happy that I've brought a man as my date, but the students and faculty of our school are more mature than to let something like this cause a problem." I said. "Well, that's good news!" Marc said. "I hope you both have a wonderful time tonight!" "Thanks Marc, we intend to!" I said. Marc signed off then. Seconds later, the spotlights and camera shut off. "Thanks guys! Have fun!" Marc said. "Thanks! We will!" I said. Marc and his crew walked off then in search of another story. "Wonder if this one makes the BBC?" Andy said, snickering. "Can you imagine George's face if it does?" I said, chuckling, as I remembered how George had gotten so hysterical, laughing with disbelief, a few months earlier at the Bell & Crown when I tried to tell him that Andy and I were partners. "Hey Wilder!" a guy's voice hissed from behind us. It sounded like Lee Tracy, a homophobic jerk I'd never liked. I turned around and searched the faces behind me. I saw that it was indeed Lee. "Not all of us are as mature as you think!" he said. The people around us all stopped talking. I grinned and said "Think about what you just said about yourself Tracy!" Several people started to snicker then, as Andy and I turned and walked to the door and went inside. * * * As soon as we stepped inside, we were surrounded by the rest of the guys and their dates. They couldn't believe Craig and I had come, and that we'd brought Andy and Jeremy with us. They were ecstatic though. "This is great! The whole gang's together!" Legs exclaimed. "Guys! I got us a table for 10 over there," Steve said, pointing to a table off to the side, where Cindy and Pete's date were sitting talking. "Perfect! Let's go sit down," Mitch said. As we were making our way through the crowd, Doug, suddenly appeared next to us. "Dougie! How's it going?" I said. "Great so far!" Doug replied, smiling. "Oh!" I said. "Crap, I was going to ask you to sit with us, but the guys just got us a table, and all the seats are taken already. Maybe we can get some seats at the table next to us too." "Don't bother. I'm already sitting with Tyler. We're sitting with Jenny and her boyfriend, and some of Jenny's friends. Thanks for the thought though." Doug said. "You and Tyler?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. Tyler Schlenker was another openly gay student. "No! We're not dating. We're just friends and uh..." Doug hesitated and turned a little red in the face. Then he grinned sheepishly at me and finished what he was going to say, "fuck-buddies! But don't tell anyone I said that!" I snickered and said, "Well, good for you guys!" Doug grinned again. Then he said, "We had planned ahead to meet at the ball and to sit together. Um... I think maybe Franco and I might go out though!" "GET OUT!" I said. "Really?" Doug blushed a little again, but grinned and nodded. "That's so cool! He seemed like a nice guy. I hope it works out for you." I said. "Thanks," Doug said shyly. I wondered then if maybe I couldn't help Doug and Franco along a bit. I told Doug about my plans for Craig & Jeremy and me & Andy to go to the beach after the ball. I asked him if maybe he'd like to join us and bring Franco. He grinned and said he'd give Franco a call and get back to me. I went and joined our group then, and he went to call Franco. * * * The tables were nicely set, and each place there was a souvenir glass mug with our school name, the year, and our senior ball theme - "Precious & Few" - etched on it. As I was sitting down next to Andy, Dennis Campbell and his girlfriend, Chloe Lawrence, walked by the table. Dennis stopped in front of me. "What's going on Wildman?" Dennis asked, looking confused. "Campbell Soup Boy! How's it going? And what're ya talkin' about?" I said. "You brought Andy to the ball? I mean, I thought you two were just friends," he said. "Well, we are friends, but we're also partners," I said. "Partners?" Dennis asked, still looking confused. "He's my boyfriend," I said. "But... I mean... You were with Lynn before... She even got pregnant. I don't get it," Dennis said. I smiled and said. "Yeah Den, I was with Lynn, and it was great. But she's gone. And I'm with Andy now." Dennis stood in front of me looking confused yet. "Come on Dennis!" Chloe said, sounding a little embarrassed. "Leave them alone." Dennis let Chloe lead him off then. "Still glad about bringing me to your ball?" Andy asked. "Sure! Denny's OK. He's just a little confused," I said. * * * We all went up and got drinks and hors d'oeuvres then. As none of us were 21 yet, the bar was only serving sodas and juices. Andy and I started a run on Bloody Mary mix, as everyone saw our Virgin Marys and thought they looked good. "I'm surprised you're not drinking 'Pink Ladies'!" Ken Griffith giggled, when we walked by him, as he waited in the drink line. "They have alcohol in them, so they're not being served tonight," Paul Spencer said, snickering. "If they were serving alcohol," Andy piped up, "we'd be drinking pints and shots of whisky, and we'd out-drink all of you!" I snickered, as we kept on going, back to the table. "Good one!" I said to Andy, as we sat down. He smiled back at me. We all enjoyed our hors d'oeuvres and drinks, while the band started playing. After we'd finished our snacks, everyone but Craig & Jeremy, and Andy & I got up and danced. After a few minutes, a fast dance came on, and I noticed that Doug and Tyler were both dancing, but they were dancing with a group of friends. Boner noticed too, and looked at us. He motioned us to join them. "Care to dance?" I asked Andy. He surveyed the dance floor a moment, then said, "Are you sure?" I nodded and grinned at him. He smiled then, and got up. Craig quickly pulled on Jeremy's sleeve, and the two of them joined us. We moved onto the dance floor and mixed in with our group of friends. We all enjoyed dancing together. We got a few strange looks, but nothing more derogatory. Doug saw us and danced over to us a moment and whispered to me, "I talked with him, and we'll meet you later!" "Cool!" I said, grinning. I told him when and where to meet us, and he said they would. Then he danced back over to Tyler and the others he'd been dancing with. "What was that all about?" Andy asked. "You'll see later," I said grinning. * * * After the song ended, an announcement was made that dinner was being served, and we could all go up to the buffet. The band quieted and played soft dinner music then, as we all went and got in line. Dinner was wonderful. They had a carving station with Steamship Round and Ham. There was a fish dish, a chicken dish, and a vegetarian lasagna. Additionally there were various vegetable and potato dishes, and salads and rolls. It was all you could eat, and by the time we'd finished, we were all pretty well stuffed. Dessert was served to us at our tables. Everyone received their own individual tiny flourless chocolate cake, which had hot fudge sauce drizzled over it, and a gob of whipped cream on top. It was decadent! * * * The band began playing dance music again, once the dinner dishes were cleared away. After a couple numbers, the band slowed down and played our theme song "Precious & Few". Almost everyone got up and began slow dancing. I stood up and looked down at Andy and smiled. "May I have this dance?" I asked. Andy's eyes got big. "Are you serious?" he asked. "Yes. This is what the Senior Ball is all about. C'mon," I said. Craig and Jeremy watched incredulously, as Andy took my hand and got up. I led Andy out onto the dance floor and put my arms around him, clasping my hands behind the small of his back. He put his arms up and over my shoulders and clasped his hands behind my neck. We began dancing then. Several people gawked at us at first, and there was a little muttering, and a few snickers, but eventually, that died down, and everyone ignored us. Craig and Jeremy joined us and slow-danced as well. Things were going along pretty smoothly, until from behind me I heard a girl say loudly, "What you're doing isn't right!" I turned and found Rosemary Lundy and Roger Cox, dancing behind us. They were both sneering at us. "What isn't right?" I asked. "Two guys being intimate together!" Roger said, confrontationally. "Gee," I said. "You didn't seem to have a problem with two guys getting intimate before Chris Coager moved away!" "What's that supposed to mean?" Roger asked. Steve and Cindy danced past just then, and over his shoulder Steve said "C'mon Rog, we all know about you and Chris, and how you used to 'be together' all the time!" "I NEVER-" Roger started to retort. Dennis and Chloe, who were dancing next to us swung around then, and before Roger could continue, Dennis cut him off. "Oh yes you did!" Dennis said. "Don't lie now Roger! Jeff and I saw Chris giving it to you up the ass in Chris's treehouse once. And Jeff used to hear you two going at it up in Chris's room all the time!" Roger froze then, and his face went red. A few people around us snickered a little. Jeff was a friend of Dennis's who lived next door to Chris. Chris, it was widely rumored, was a fuck-buddy of Roger's. Rosemary looked at Roger with disgust and said loudly, "Is that why you won't have sex with me? Are you queer too?" Roger just stood there, turning redder. When he didn't say anything, Rosemary stared incredulously at him for a minute, then stalked off the dance floor. Roger looked at me. His face was a mixture of anger and embarrassment. He looked like he had tears in his eyes too. "Maybe you should'a kept your mouth shut!" I said pointedly to him. Suddenly, he turned and walked swiftly off the dance floor in the direction of the men's room. I noticed that Mr. McElroy had seen and heard what happened. He followed Roger to the men's room. When the dance ended, we all went back to our tables. I noticed Mr. McElroy was back at the teacher's table. We didn't see Roger or Rosemary again for the rest of the evening. We heard later that they'd left early, and that rather than riding with Roger, Rosemary had called her mother to come and get her. "Still glad you brought me?" Andy asked, as we sat sipping sodas at our table. "Yup!" I said. "I feel sorry for Roger," Andy said. "Don't! He's had it coming for quite a while!" Dennis said, as he and Chloe walked up behind us. Dennis apologized then for his earlier awkwardness and said he'd acted that way because he was so surprised. "Not that that excuses poor behavior!" he added, sheepishly. Then he added that he hoped we could still be friends. I grinned and stood up and shook hands with him, telling him I thought that would be nice. Dennis grinned, then he and Chloe walked off toward the bar. "Yeah! Very happy I brought you!" I said, smiling at Andy, as I sat down again. * * * Soon we were all on the dance floor again, dancing a couple more fast dances. When they ended, we all went back to the table. Andy excused himself to go to the men's room. Boner snickered and said, "Wondered how long you were going to last. I think this is the longest I've seen you go without peeing Whizzer!" Andy flipped his middle finger at Steve as he walked away. Jeremy and I went to the bar then to get us all some more sodas. When we got back to the table with them, all the guys were gone. Only the girls were sitting there. "Where'd the guys go?" I asked. Cindy said, "The strangest thing happened. Craig suddenly said "Guys!" and motioned to the men's room and they all took off! I had no idea you all went together too!" "It's called 'social peeing'," Jeremy said, snickering. "NO! Something's up!" I said. I looked toward the men's room door and saw Mr. Simms come out and hurry toward the teacher's table. "C'mon!" I said, and jumped up and hurried toward the men's room. Jeremy jumped up and followed me, as the girls all sat staring after us. As we headed down the hallway toward the men's room, Rory Sullivan and Glenn Davis burst out the door. They stopped a moment and sneered at us, then brushed roughly past us. "Who were they?" Jeremy asked. "Only the two most homophobic, mentally deranged, assholes in the class," I said. We went into the men's room then, and found all the guys huddled around Andy, who was standing at the sink... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The next chapter in this series will be published shortly.
