We were polar opposites in appearance, my name is Jacob, and I'm a blue-eyed blond, Ian has dark brown hair with matching brown eyes. As strange as it sounds I knew in that first moment I laid eye on Ian that I loved him. It wasn't a sexual, boner inducing kind of love; after all we were only six years old. I believe now that it was love in its purest form; my heart was filled with joy at the very sight of him. He was in my thoughts as I fell asleep and first in my thoughts the moment I woke. My family lived in an upper middleclass neighborhood, I never knew where Ian lived until the day I followed him home when we were in the seventh grade. Ian had stayed over night on many occasions from the first grade on; he often went to the movies and swimming with dad and me. But never in six years has he asked to visit his home, so one day I decided to follow him just so I'd know where he lived, at least that's what I told myself. I followed about a half block behind him until he came to a house with tall shrubs that nearly hid the house from view. Ian turned onto the sidewalk that led to the house; I crept up to where I could peek down the walk leading to the house. There was a tall man standing on the porch leaning again a post, I figured he must be Ian's dad. I noticed Ian walked slowly towards the porch with his head down, he stammered what I think was, "Hi dad," as he started up the steps. That was when I saw something that changed my life forever. The man swung his arm hitting Ian across the side of his face knocking him down the steps onto his back. I stood unable to move, my throat went dry, I couldn't have spoken even if I had found the words. The man reached down grabbing Ian by the front of his shirt; he opened the door and literally threw Ian into the house. When I regained some semblance of where I was and what had just taken place I started to shake with horror for what had happened to the boy who was my best friend, next came rage, something I had never experienced before, my face was soaked in tears as I turned and walked back to my own home. As I approached the porch where my dad was sitting with a big smile waiting for me, I saw the smile fade as he stood and wrapped me in his arms as I begin to sob uncontrollably. He never said a word, he just held me and finally started to whisper over and over, "Jacob, I love you more than life itself." I knew he did, there had never been a doubt. When I stopped crying I sat beside him on the porch swing and related what happened to Ian. In the twelve years dad and I have been together I have never seen him cry, and when I looked up into his face a tear ran slowly down his cheek. Dad was a single father and raised me by himself when mother died following child birth. I can't remember him ever so much as speaking an unkind word to me; it had never entered my mind that a father might hit his child. Dad looked me in the eye and said, "Jacob let's see if we can find out what's going on in Ian's home, maybe there's a way we can help fix it if we can find out what the problem is." For the first time since coming home I felt a glimmer hope, "Do you really think we can dad?" "Jacob all we can do is check things out, now if I may make a suggestion; it may be to your advantage if you don't tell Ian what you saw. He's going to be embarrassed and upset knowing that you followed him home and his feelings will be hurt. Now, what if I go by Ian's tomorrow morning and knock on their door, I'll ask his dad if Ian can come with us to our cabin in the Poconos for the weekend." For the first time I saw some of the sadness leave my son's eyes as he leaned over and gave me a kiss on the cheek. "Thanks dad, you are the best, and I promise I won't say anything to Ian about what I saw." Our nosey neighbor Ms. Beagle-face, or I should say, Ms. Alyson waved with a suspicious glint in her eyes having seen Jacob kiss me. All I need is to have that nosey-wino-bitch start spreading rumors. I know she thinks Jacob and I are too familiar with each other. Little does she know just how innocent Jacob is about people with corrupt, dirty minds like hers? I suppose it does look odd, even if Jacob is just a kid in the seventh grade he's nearly six feet tall and is already needing to shave two or three times a week. I'm also aware from hearing giggles coming from Jacob's room that he and Ian have figured out their penises are for more than just pissing in the toilet making bubbles, which Jacob thought was really neat when he was little. Jacob told me where Ian lived and Friday morning after the kids were in school I drove to Ian's house. I was a tad nervous about meeting a man that could or would harm his own child. I rang the bell and after waiting for several minutes a guy opened the door about half way and asked what I wanted. What I hadn't expected was to find this extraordinarily handsome man standing there wearing only a pair of hip hugger jeans. The smell of liquor was overwhelming to say the least, other than that and the bloodshot eyes; I'd have to say he was one of the most handsome men I possibly ever laid eyes on. I introduced myself and reached out to shake his hand which he took as he looked me from head to foot and back again pausing about midsection. He blushed a little before asking me to come inside; he said his name was Graham. The house was neat but lacked a feel of hominess. I explained that I was Jacob's dad, Matthew. He offered me a seat on the sofa and gave me that once over look again, there was an obvious interest in my crotch from the way his eyes lingered there. He had dark brown hair like his son's and his chest was built like that of a Greek god. There was a combination of anger and deep sadness in his heavily lashed eyes. Graham snapped me out of my daze by asking what I wanted. I explained that Jacob and I were heading for mountains for a weekend before cold weather hit and I thought maybe Ian might want to go with us. If he could it would be great for Jacob. Graham looked pissed off as he said, "Yeah, its Jacob this, Jacob that, man that's all I hear when Ian gets home is Jacob, Jacob, and more Jacob." Undaunted, I chuckled and replied, "Yes, I get the same from Jacob; I guess that's the way it is when you have a best friend." "Yeah, well you have a wife to share it with; I'm raising Ian alone since my old lady split with her HE-MAN boyfriend." *Okay, there's at least part of the reason for Grahams anger.* * * "Actually Graham, I've raised Jacob on my own since the day he was born. My wife died minutes after giving birth to Jacob." Graham looked shaken, some of the anger faded, but the sadness remained. "I'm sorry Matthew, as you can see I'm good at putting my foot in my mouth." "Hey, life throws all kinds of crap at us, but it hits everyone sooner or later, so I guess we have shower the muck off and move on with our lives. What do you think about Ian going with us this weekend? If you haven't anything going on you're welcome to join us, there's plenty of room. *What are you thinking Matthew, have you lost your mind, you don't know anything about this man other then he beats his son."* * * Graham looked stunned and for several seconds was speechless. "Are you sure about that, we don't know each other at all, and actually I don't think Ian would enjoy himself much if I was there." *And pray tell, why wouldn't Ian want his dad with him unless he scared shitless of his old man?* * * Something kept gnawing at me to push this farther. "Well we could make this a relaxing weekend with just the four of us. The kids will be off playing at the lake most of the time anyway. It'll do them good to see their dads enjoying themselves, do you like to fish?" "Are you kidding, I love to fish, I haven't done it since before I married Ian's mother, she hated anything to do with hunting or fishing so I gave it up." For the first time I saw a spark of happiness in Graham's eyes. "Let's do it then Jacob and I will be here around eight A.M. if that's not too early. It's about a two hour drive to the cabin; if you like fishing you're going to love this lake. From the back porch you can actually see trout jumping after bugs during the early morning hours. I have plenty of fishing equipment there so we'll have everything we'll need for a fun weekend. Jacob and I will be loaded with groceries; there'll be plenty to eat, I hope you like hamburgers." "Matthew, what can Ian and I bring?" "Bathing suits, a change of clothing, and a healthy appetite, we'll see you at eight tomorrow. Now I'm excited, I'll actually have an adult to talk to." With that I got up and started for the door. "Matthew." I turned back and looked at Graham. He walked up to me and said, "Thanks, you're a special guy, I can see why Ian likes to stay at your house so much." He then pulled me into a bear hug to beat all bear hugs. It seems perfectly natural to put my arms around him and hug him back. We broke the hug and I smiled as I said, "See you guys in the morning," and I left for home. When Jacob came home I was bursting with excitement. He ran up the steps and leaped into my arms wrapping his legs around my waist. I nearly fell over laughing, nothing like a kid weighing in almost 160 pound hitting you head on at full force. "Dad, what happened this morning, did you see Ian's dad, he wasn't mean to you was he?" "Whoa! Calm down Jacob, let's sit down and I'll tell you all about it. First I didn't find out way he hit his son yesterday, but I did see a very angry and sad man start to change before my eyes. He told me his wife left him for another man, and that's I believe is a big part of his anger. But, he needs our help Jacob, I know you're mad as hell at him, but I think I made headway into what's bothering him, we have to be patient and let him find his own way out of his inner turmoil." Jacobs face dropped a foot; I could see the disappointment in his eyes. "Hey buddy, don't sell your old man short, and you need to know I'm going to need your help, let me put it this way Graham is going to need our help if we're going to make the situation better for Ryan. Can you do that for your best friend?" "But dad, how are we going to do anything, I don't understand, how can we help?" "Well, if you'll sit still and stop talking for five minutes I'll explain it to you. I've invited Graham and Ian to come up to the cabin with us for the weekend and this time spent together is going to be important for Ian. You're going to have to be on your toes, with no show of anger or animosity toward his dad or this weekend could be ruined for everyone, especially Ian." "We're going to the cabin...in the mountains.with Ian and his dad." "Yes, and our mission Jacob, is to take Ian and his father to a positive place in their psyches that will allow healing to take place. Jacob, you are intelligent, intuitive, loving, and mature for your age. Working together as a team, we can become the catalyst that could bring about reconciliation between Ian and his dad." Jacob put his arms around my neck and kissed me, "Okay dad, got it! So we're going to the mountains with Ian and his dad to begin a healing process between the two of them. So what do we do now?" "Pack! "We pick up Graham and Ian tomorrow at eight A.M." I put my hand beneath Jacob's chin and raised his face to mine. "I have a good feeling about this Jacob; we can do something to help these two people." With that said I leaned down and kissed my son's forehead and gave him a conspiratorial look along with a wink. I went to sleep that night wondering how Ian was reacting to this news, and if Graham even told him. My last thought was that I hoped Graham didn't indulge in a few more drinks and forget all that was planned. We arrived at Ian's house about five minutes to eight, and I was feeling a bit worried not knowing whether this was going to work out or not. The front door flew open and out came Ian and his dad, both wearing big smiles. Whatever apprehension I had felt minutes before quickly vanished. If I thought Graham looked handsome yesterday, I could hardly believe how good he looked cleaned up and wearing a happy smile. Oh yeah, he was also wearing tight jeans, and a white t-shirt that showed ever inch of his chest as if it had been molded to him. * * *I felt a stirring in my groin, what was that all about?* * * Jacob jumped from the car and ran to Ian; he graciously shook hands with Graham before taking a duffle bag that Graham had been carrying. I opened up the back of our SUV and helped Jacob make room for their things. I turned and said hi to Ian and tussled his hair before reaching out to shake Graham's hand. Graham took my hand and pulled me into another surprise hug. He said, "You have no idea how Ian and I are looking forward to this weekend." The scent of toothpaste and a pleasant aftershave greeted me rather than the stink of whisky. I replied, "I doubt anymore then Jacob and I are it's been a while since we've spent much time up at the lake, and it's going to be great having you guys with us." * * *There was another unexpected reaction from the family jewels, this time visible enough to be seen through the shorts I was wearing.* The kids jumped into the backseat as Graham and I got in the front. I removed the cap I was wearing and laid it over the obvious bulge growing down the right leg of my shorts. I believe Graham noticed since he looked into my eyes and winked as a smile spread across his handsome face. He reached over and slid his hand under my cap and laid it on my thigh, I neither flinched nor pushed his hand away. *Two thoughts passed through my mind, is this why Graham's wife left him, and is this why I never showed any interest in other women after Jacob's mother died?* * * Off we went for a weekend of fun, and hopefully a renewed relationship for Ian and his dad and perhaps other possibilities.
