A very sobby Victor helped me out to the curb. He carried my single bag. "Where's Mom? Isn't she going to kiss me good-by?" "Some members of the church came by and took your mother to the church. I guess they are going to pray for her. She's cried all day and wanted to see you. But they wouldn't let her. She told me to say she loves you." "Where am I going?" "I don't know, JJ. I'm sorry brother, but Dad won't tell anyone anything about this. He keeps saying it's the only way to save the family. Please, bro. Let me come with you." "We've been through that Victor. You're staying here. You love your dad. In spite of everything you love him and he loves you. Mom is fond of you too and after a while she'll love you. You can't come with me." The driver was impatient. "Come on, son. Your bus leaves in half an hour and we have to drive all the way downtown. My instructions are to make sure you aren't late." "JJ, your bus ticket and some money are in this envelope. Dad wouldn't let me look inside." "Victor, I think your dad is a piece of shit because of the way he's treated you all your life. And now this. You tell him for me that if he ever hurts you this way or hurts my Mom, that This Spawn of Satan will come down on him so hard, he'll pray for God to take him to heaven right then. I mean it, Victor. If I thought my staying here or if I took you or Mom with me would make any difference, there's no way I'd be making this trip alone. I won't allow him or his church to hurt you any more. Is that clear?" "Yeah, JJ. I'll tell him." "Give me a hug and I'm off to my new whatever." "Come on, boy. It's time to go." Vic gave me my bag and I shut the door of the cab. "What happened to you, son? Big family trouble?" "Yeah, I'd say that." "Well, just sit back and enjoy the ride. The only bus that leaves at the time I'm dropping you goes to Amarillo. After that I don't know what you're doing." "Thanks for the information." "Why are you sitting up so straight? Lean back. This taxi is clean." "I have a sore back. It feels better to sit straight." "OK, have it your way." I opened the envelope to get money for the driver. There was $100 inside. 'That is the extent of my fortune,' I thought. I tried to sleep on the bus. But my back and legs hurt too much for that. No one paid any attention to me. I'd had lots of practice making myself invisible. As I was leaving the bus in Amarillo, the driver said to me, "See that man over there? The one dressed in the Marine uniform. He's here to take you to the school. I've met him before. He's an instructor at the West Texas Marine Institute. It's a good school for boys. Most of them have been in trouble, either with their families or the law. I guess your problem is family. Usually a sheriff accompanies the other boys. Good luck, kid." The Marine walked up to me. "JJ Robinson?" I nodded. "Come with me." So much for a civil greeting. The trip by Jeep took a little over an hour. When we finally pulled in front of the Institute, it was well past 1:00 in the morning. "You'll be in this room just for tonight. We're well used to boys showing up here at all hours of the day and night. Tomorrow, we'll get you squared away. Sleep well." The marine shut the door and I was once more left alone. I flopped on the bed (Later I'd learn to call it a bunk.) and tried to get comfortable enough to sleep. My back was beyond sore. My legs ached. The only position I could find that was half way comfortable was lying on my stomach. Finally, fatigue overcame the pain and I went to sleep. I was awakened by a knock on the door. The sun was shining through the small window of the very small room. I was still lying on my stomach. The door opened, without my answering the knock, allowing a guy a few years older than I to walk in. I wasn't able to get up from the bed. "JJ Robinson. I'm Cpl. Forest. For right now, until we get you settled in, you may call me Felix. Your name is JJ? What do the initials stand for?" "James Joseph," I whisper. A whisper is all I could manage. The Corporal continued, paying no attention to my voice or my posture. "Around here, you're going to be called Private, Robinson or Private Robinson. If you make any friends, they can call you anything you like. I'm going to get you processed today. So grab your shit and let's get moving." "But I . . ." "Come on private. We have things to do. But first chow." "I can't make my arms work," I managed to get out. "Private, what's wrong with you? Are you hurt?" He took me by my shoulder to help get me out of the bed. "AWWWWWW. Please don't touch me there." It's not until then that the corporal paid attention to the blood stains on my shirt and shorts. "JJ, you are hurt. Let me see." He lifted my shirt from my shorts. But it was stuck under the waistband of my shorts. He gave the shirt a jerk exposing my back from about my shoulders down. "My God. What happened to your back? Come on I've got to get you to sick bay." "I don't think I can stand up. I'm too stiff." "I'll get the doc over here right away. I'll be back in a minute." He left me lying on the bed, feeling much more pain than I had the night before. My body had become stiff during the night. I couldn't move my arms or my neck. Though I thought I could move my feet. In a few minutes the corporal was back, accompanied by an older man dressed in white. "This is Doc Russell. He'll take good care of you, JJ. He was a Navy corpsman." The doctor knelt beside my bed placing his medical bag on the floor beside him. "Now lets see what kind of problem we have here, young man." He began to slowly peel my shirt away from my back. It stuck in several places, but a light tug pulled it free. "You are a bit of a mess there, son. I need to get you into the sick bay so I can do a thorough check up on you. But what happened to your back?" "I'd rather not say. I had a problem at home." "You had more than just a problem. I'll want to know what happened, but for now just relax. We'll get a litter in here and get you to sick bay." . . . "Corporal get three of your troopers and give me a hand here, NOW." "Aye, Aye, sir." It took just a few minutes for the corporal to get a work crew to carry me to sick bay. They carefully lifted me from the bed and onto a litter without causing too much additional pain, then they carried me across to the sick bay. "I'm going to give you a shot for the pain so I can clean up these wounds. When you wake up, we'll talk." The doc gave me a shot in the butt causing me to pass out almost immediately. When I woke I saw through the window by my bed that it was night. I was lying on my stomach completely naked. There was a cloth covering my back but it didn't feel like a sheet. It was cool and moist making my back tingle, but at least it didn't hurt. I stirred, trying to get off the bunk. "Lie back down and don't move. I'll get the doc," a disconnected voice said. I could not see the person who was speaking. The doctor was by my bed almost immediately. "How are you feeling, young man?" "Sort of lost." "Are you in pain?" "Not as long as I don't move very much." "Then lie still. Does it hurt for you to talk?" "No, sir. But I don't really feel much like talking, right now." "Whether you feel like it or not, you have to talk to me. I need to know what happened. I don't remember many times I've seen a boy's back and legs so injured outside of an auto accident or battle injury. I have to know what happened." I began to sob, not being able to speak. "Then I'm going to ask you some direct questions. You must answer me. Is that understood?" "Yes sir," I sobbed. 'Man shake out of it,' I thought. Whoever this guy is, he's here to help me. Sobbing and crying at this point isn't going to help one damned bit.' "Good. Were you beaten?" "Yes, sir." The man's voice was gentle, caring, probing. 'I haven't heard a man speak in such comforting tones in a long time, except for Mr. Castle,' I thought. "Before you left home?" "Yes, sir." "Did your father do this to you?" I began to sob again. "No sir, it was my step dad." "Your step father beat the bloody hell out of you and then put you on a bus to come to us. Is that it?" "Yes sir." "You need to talk about this son. Tell me what happened. When? Why did your step dad do this to you?" "It was Friday night. Barry got mad at Victor and me. Victor is my stepbrother, Barry burst into our room. He had a belt or something like that, but it looked thicker and wider than most belts. He started cursing me and hitting me with the belt. I tried to protect myself and he kicked me in the ribs. The next thing I knew, my clothes were packed and I was on the bus to here." "I knew something like that had to have happened. The story is not unfamiliar around here. Didn't you tell anyone before you got on the bus?" "No sir." "Why not. Why didn't you tell someone?" "I had no one to tell." "I see. So you got on a bus and ended up here." "Yes sir." "Well that's not the worst story I've ever heard, but it comes pretty close. You're in good hands now, son. We'll take good care of you and we won't send you home." "Where am I, sir?" "You're in a boarding school called West Texas Marine Institute. We're in the Texas panhandle. Do you know where that is?" "Yes, sir. I'm from Oklahoma." "Yes, that I know. I've looked at your admission records." "What day is it?" "Sunday. It's rare that we accept boys at this time of year or without more background checks but you sound like a special case." "When can I get up? I really need to pee." "Whenever you feel like it. You were hurt pretty bad and you're going to feel some weakness along with stiffness and being sore for a while. If you want to try to get up now to make a head call, we'll help you." It wasn't until that point that I realized the man and I weren't alone. A Black boy who looked to be a couple of years younger than I was walked around the bed and helped me roll onto my side. Together they lifted me to my feet and held on while I gained my balance. It hurt like hell to be standing and to have them touching me, and I was dizzy, but I was standing and thought I could walk. I took a couple of tentative steps. But I was still pretty unsteady. The boy grasped me gently, but tightly around my waist and held me close to him. I took a few more steps with his assistance and slowly we made it to the toilet. The boy held onto me as I aimed at the bowl and finally relieved my bladder. He led me back to my bed and helped me get situated comfortably-at least as comfortable as possible. I couldn't lie on my back so both the boy and the doc helped me roll onto my stomach. "I'm putting this towel over your back. It's wet and may feel cold for a minute or two but the ointment I've soaked it in will ease the pain and help heal your wounds. In the morning we'll get you out of bed for a while and make you walk. Walking will help with your recovery. You ought to be able to get around on your own in a day or two." The sun streaming through my window forced me awake. 'Sheeeit, I forgot to pull the drapes again.' I began to crawl out of bed until the pain in my back reminded me I wasn't at home. I was able to raise my head enough to survey where I was. Then reality began to dawn. "Good Morning, Sunshine. How are you feeling?" It was the boy from the evening before. "Man, are you my guard or something? You seem to be here all the time?" "No, but you're my only patient right now so I don't have to be anyplace else. Besides it's rather pleasant watching you sleep," he said with a chuckle. He stood from the chair and started walking toward me. The crotch of his trousers displayed what looked to be a double roll of half- dollars laid end to end. There was a definite wet spot at the end of the second roll. 'Do you like to see me sleep or are you just enchanted with my butt?' I thought. "Are you ready to get up and make a head call?" "Head call?" "Yeah, you know-go to the toilet." "Oh, yeah. I definitely need to take a piss." "OK. Let me help you get up. You're likely to still feel a little dizzy. Sleeping in one position-especially on your stomach will do that to most guys. By the way I'm called Raphe. You know? Like the painter. My real name is Raphael, but that sounds too queer. So the guys just call me Raphe. OK, up we come." While delivering this rapid-fire monologue, Raphe took me by the shoulders, helped me turn over and then to stand. "What are you Raphe, some kind of nurse?" "No, I want to join the Navy after I graduate next year and become a corpsman--just like Doc. He's a great guy, you know, and is as helpful as any man I've ever known. I'm a cadet here, just like everyone else, but this is my job. We all have some kind of job outside of classes and shit. Maybe you could join Doc and me here. Sometimes we really could use a third hand. Especially when the meat in the galley has spoiled." 'Does this guy go on like this all the time? Not only does he talk a lot, he talks really fast-especially for a Texan.' Raphe walked me to the toilet-I mean the head. It was easier to walk that day than the day before and I really didn't feel the need of someone holding my waist, but that didn't seem to matter to Raphe. He held me close, but not as tightly as before. "You're going to have to sit up and walk today as much as possible. Doc is a big believer in not letting anyone lie on the bunk too much. Makes them crabby, he says." I completed my business in the head and we headed back into the room. It wasn't a long walk. The head was attached to a room with four beds. One wall faced the outside of the building; there was a large window looking out into a large courtyard like space. Another wall was all glass overlooking a broad corridor with a desk or workstation in the center, surrounded by what appeared to be three other rooms identical to the one I was in. I didn't see anyone in any of the other rooms. 'I guess I'm not only Raphe's only patient, I must be the only patient in the sick bay.' "Yeup, we're all alone," Raphe commented as if he were reading my thoughts. "The spring session of the school is just about over and no one wants to be sick right now. We're beginning final exam week. Some of the cadets will be going home in a week, but most of us will stay for the summer camp. I guess that's what you're here for, right? By the way, what class will you be in?" "Uh, I don't know. Back home I was just finishing the eighth grade so I guess I'll be a freshman." "You're big for a freshman. How tall are you?" "I'm 5'7"." "God, I'm three years older than you are and I'm only 5'6". I keep hoping I just haven't had my growth spurt." Raphe guided me to an overstuffed chair and sat me down. I got my first good look at him. He's had plenty of chances to scope me out, walking me to and from the head and, as he admitted, watching me sleep. Raphe was, as he said, a little shorter than I was and a good deal thinner. The way his uniform tee shirt and white trousers hung on him, it was pretty obvious there was no fat anywhere on his thin frame. His hair was black, kinky, and cut almost to his scalp on top. The sides of his head were shaved. There was a dark line running down his cheeks, like a 5:00 shadow, but I had a feeling he didn't have to shave every day yet. His skin was light brown, what we used to call coffee with cream. Our schools in Tulsa were integrated and there were some Black students in the school, but none in any of my classes. Most students kept to their own group and rarely socialized outside of class. Besides most Black people in Tulsa lived either on the far north side or the far west side. When it was necessary for students of either color to talk to students of the other, the conversation was strained, to say the least. But Raphe's manner was very easy, comfortable even around a White kid. He made me feel that we should accept each other as equals. Raphe's face was not what I would call handsome, certainly not when compared to Victor or Tom Matthews but it was pleasant, almost goofy looking, especially when he smiled, which he did a lot. His eyes were brown and twinkled when he smiled. Raphe was obviously a happy guy. Raphe went about his job of nurse quickly and efficiently stripping the sheets off my bed. I noticed a little blood on the towel that had been covering my back, but not much. Sitting in the chair was not at all uncomfortable. My back must have been healing. "Doc will be in to check on your back and legs a little later. Do you have any pain sitting there?" "No." "That's good. He uses a lot of old Indian remedies. That cloth he had covering your back was soaked in the same foul looking concoction he coated on your back. It always seems to work at healing everything from cuts and scrapes to major bruises like you had. There's hardly any bruises on your back at all." 'I guess you'd know that. You've seen my bare back side well enough.' "However, Doc said you could have a few scars. Some of the cuts were pretty deep and you went too long without medical attention. Doc almost went crazy when he realized you'd gone over a day and half without someone checking on you. And when Doc gets like that there's no telling what he might do. I'm sure he's reported the whole story to the Commander." "Uh, Raphe, do you suppose I could have something to put on. Sitting here naked in front of you is not the most comfortable situation for me." "Sorry, JJ. I wasn't thinking. Around here the guys see each other naked so much, especially in sick bay, that I forget that a new guy might be more modest. Sure, as soon as I get your bunk changed, I'll get something for you to put on. If you're cold, I could get you a blanket right now, I guess." "I'm not cold." He finished making up the bunk. "OK, now to get something for you to wear. Do you want a gown or a pair of shorts?" "Shorts would be good." "You got em. All we have are school issue gym shorts, red with a bright yellow bulldog's head on them. But they won't show off your ass the way the gowns do. Unless you want something with sequins," he added with a laugh. 'He has a nice laugh, like he really enjoys being alive and in this place.' "The shorts will be just fine, Raphe. Thanks. No sequins." Raphe left the room and I took a better look around. I hoisted myself out of the chair much more easily than I thought I could and shuffled over to the outside window. 'Where the hell am I? West Texas Marine Institute? I've never heard of this place. I've never been to Texas before. This place looks like it's in the middle of the desert. No trees, no grass, just sand and concrete. God it's desolate. This must be what Hell looks like.' What I was seeing was a large empty area surrounded by ten or a dozen one-story buildings that look like they're made of concrete, the same color as the ground. In the center of the area there were three flagpoles surmounted by a U.S. flag, a large red one, that I think was the Marine Corps flag and one I recognized as the flag of Texas. 'It looks hot out there even if it is only a morning at the end of May.' "Here's your shorts, JJ," said Raphe as he came into the room. "I hope these will fit. They aren't new, but they're at least clean. I hope you don't mind free balling for a while, I couldn't find any clean underwear that looked like it would fit you. Besides you'll just have to take them off when Doc examines you." "Raphe, are these your shorts?" "Yeah, but don't worry about it. I washed `em just yesterday." . . . "You might want to sit down again. You're supposed to be up and walking but Doc won't like it if you overdo it." I sat back into the chair, feeling a little more comfortable wearing something. Raphe pulled up another chair across from me. "So what's your story? I know you're from Tulsa. I've never been to Tulsa, but I've heard it's a pretty city. And I know you were admitted as an emergency cadet but you have too much of a tan to be a jailbird. A lot of the guys here are under court order-had trouble with the police of some sort. They always have really pale skin-no sun I guess." "My step dad sent me here." "I'm a court case, but I wasn't in jail or anything like that. I ran away from home when I was ten and was selling my gorgeous bod on the streets in Dallas. I was beat up by a john, went to the hospital and then the court sent me here. That was five years ago. I've never had a real home before WTMI. Why'd your dad send you here?" "Man do you always talk that fast and that much? I've always heard Texans were kind of slow talking dudes and never said much." "Sorry, I guess I get carried away. But since I've been here I always have lots to say. Sgt. Flood says I don't have a clutch between my brain and my mouth. Whatever I think, I say. If I talk too much just tell me. It won't stop me from talking, but it might make you feel better if you tell me to shut up. So why did your dad send you here?" "I don't know. One day he beat the shit out of me and I was here two days later." 'Now why did I say that? I hardly know this guy and he has me wanting to tell him my life story. Maybe its because he talks so much-makes me want to talk. He is kind of sexy, though.' "Why'd he beat you? Were you selling shit? Do you know what kind of shit I mean-you know like drugs or . . ." "No nothing like that. He thought I was a bad influence on my step brother, Victor." "Were you fucking him?" "Geez, Raphe. What makes you think I'd be fucking my step brother?" "I don't know. Just a wild guess. I told you whatever comes to my mind goes spouting out of my mouth. So if you weren't fucking him, was he fucking you?" "God, man. I thought I was hung up on sex, but you're . . ." "Yeah I know. I think about sex all the time. Lots of hot boys are here and every one of them is horny as hell. If I were still working, I'd make a fortune." Raphe laughed hard and long. "So how were you corrupting your step- brother?" "I said he thought I was a bad influence. I didn't say I was corrupting him." "OK, So what kind of bad influence were you?" 'He can ask a simple question!' "I was teaching him to jack off." "How old is he-like ten, eleven?" "Fourteen." "And he didn't know how to jack off? What kind of boy doesn't know how to jack off before he's fourteen? Hell I was jacking when I came out of the womb. Least that's what my dad used to say." Raphe laughed at his own joke. "Jacking and talking-that's the way I was from the minute I was born. Always doing one or the other or both at the same time." 'This boy loves to laugh. He's really a cool guy-someone I'd like to get to know better. But as much as he talks, how did he ever have time to "sell his bod"?' I grinned to myself at my joke. "His dad taught him that pleasure was a sin-especially sex. His dad was a real fanatic about that. He caught us in bed together and . . ." "Ha. I knew it! You were trying to fuck him!" "No we were lying beside each other. All I did was have his cock in my hand, stroking it." "But you wanted to fuck him didn't you. You horny bastard. I knew you had to be queer. Just like me, except you weren't ready to sell it yet. I knew it!" "Hey, man. Let's not jump to any conclusions. I didn't want to fuck him. I've never fucked anyone, though I've wondered what it would be like and I guess . . . I guess I am gay." "You're gay alright. My gaydar is never wrong. That's why I could sell my stuff and never get picked up by the police. I knew who was an all right guy and who wasn't. Except for the guy who beat me up. He was gay but he liked to rough up hustlers." "So don't the guys here pick on you? You know, . . . for being gay?" "Hell no. We have a lot of gay guys here. I told you a lot of boys are here on court order. Some of `em are here because they had no home and the court didn't want to send them to reform school. So they come here. Only a few of the guys are really here by choice. We're a school of queers, druggies and other assorted misfits. And the straight boys, . . . they sometimes get tired of the five sisters and want a little other kind of action. We queers provide them with their release. Besides no one picks on any one else. Harassment gets a guy all kinds of disciplinary. So don't worry about it. Just walk without a swish and you'll get along fine." I walked back to the window. The area outside looked even hotter than it did earlier. No one was out there. "Where are all the guys?" Raphe looked at his watch. "They're all in class, I guess. We have four classes every morning, then chow and then three more classes. After that there's a little free time for those guys who are doing OK in class. For the others there's a study hall until chow. Then there's a PT session, more free time or study hall and then taps-bed time. We have PT in the morning and evening when it's not so damned hot. This place during the summer is like an oven. The sun beats down on the sand and just throws the heat right back at ya. During the winter it can be really cold-lots of snow and shit." "When do you think I'll be able to get out of here?" "Not till Doc says you're ready-another couple of days. Why? Don't you like my company?" "I like your company just fine . . . But don't you need to be in class or something?" "Not as long as I have a patient. Besides most of the classes are just reviews for the final exams. I've never had any trouble with class work so I'll do fine without the reviews. My first job though is to be here with you." "Well, you two certainly seem to be getting along together," said the Doc, walking into the room. "Is my chief of nursing taking good care of you, JJ?" Raphe jerked to a standing position. I guess it was a kind of attention, but I'm not sure the guys in John Wayne's movies would have agreed. "Yes, sir he's a good nurse." "He can talk too much some times. But I hope he's filled you in a little about the Institute." "Yes, sir. He's done that." Man, talk about being filled out. Doc had all my fantasy dads beat to hell. He was tall, dark hair cut almost to the skin, with a little gray at the temples. His chest filled the tee shirt he was wearing like it was a second skin and his legs looked as if they were going to split the seams of his trousers. The bulge in his crotch wasn't bad either. 'I guess I'm feeling better. I haven't even taken a good look at him until now.' "Well, lets see how you're doing. Get out of those shorts and lie down on your bunk." . . . "Raphe you've done your usual good job of housekeeping, I see." "Thanks, Doc." "Lie on your stomach, JJ." . . . "Well these cuts are looking pretty good. You're going to have some scarring here, JJ, but I think we caught you before there will be too much. In a short time, the welts will lose their swelling. How does your back feel?" "Fine, Sir." "Just call me Doc, JJ. I'm not an officer and "sir" is reserved for your instructors and the corps officers." "Fine, Doc." "Roll over. I want to check your ribs." Surprisingly, my back didn't hurt very much-just a little sore. Doc began pressing against my abdomen, placing a hand on me then knocking against it with his other hand. "Any pain there?" "No, Doc" "Good. How about here?" he asked as he pressed lightly against my rib cage. "No." "Excellent, then I don't think anything was broken. We're going to have to do a complete physical work up on you before I can release you to the corps of cadets. Do you feel up to it now?" "Yes. I guess so." "Good. You're a fast healer, JJ. That will stand you well around here." "Raphe will draw some blood and I'll need a urine sample. By the way, have you had a bowel movement?" "No, Doc. I haven't had a lot to eat and haven't felt the need." "We'll get you some chow in a little bit. If you don't have a bowel movement by in the morning, I may have to give you a suppository. Your abdomen is a little swollen. Can you give me some urine?" "I guess so." "Raphe get a cup and help JJ to the head. Then I'm going to finish what I need to do." Doc's physical was the most complete examination I'd ever had. He did the usual stuff with blood pressure, temperature and Raphe drew a blood sample, filling three tubes. I dutifully peed in the cup. "OK JJ. Stand over here. Turn your head and cough . . . Good. Other way . . . Feels good. Peel it back as far as you can . . . You take good care of yourself there. Good and clean, no excess cheese at all. Here in the desert, it's hard to keep yourself clean, especially for an uncut boy. Pay close attention to that. You'll sweat constantly and not even realize it because of the dry climate. Now bend over the side of the bunk. Spread you cheeks. I need to check for hemorrhoids and then I'm going to check your prostate gland. Has anyone ever checked that?" "No, sir." "This may be a little uncomfortable but I'm going to stick my finger up your butt. Don't worry if it causes a reaction. Lots of boys get excited when this exam is done. Perfectly natural." I heard Raphe laugh, softly-but a definite laugh. "Shut up Raphe. I know you enjoy this exam more every time I do it." 'They banter back and forth like I always thought a father and son should. I guess working together like this creates a real bond.' Doc put on a rubber glove and squeezed lube on two fingers. He was very gentle about inserting, first one finger, then the other up my rectum. He moved his fingers around very slowly. Just as he warned I might, I responded with an erection. Raphe was most attentive to what the Doc was doing to me. He let out a deep sigh as the exam was completed. "Looks good up there. No swelling, no blood . . . Raphe it's about time for chow. Go down to the mess hall and get us three of whatever they're serving today . . . And no dilly-dallying. I'm sure JJ here is hungry. And I know I am . . . JJ I'll check back with you later this afternoon. I have a class to teach after chow. Raphe will be here with you all afternoon. So if you want or need anything, I'm sure he can help you. Otherwise, once you have that bowel movement and we know everything is in working order, you can probably start getting processed into the Institute tomorrow sometime. I'm sure you'd like to get out of this place." "Thanks Doc. I guess I have to get out into the world sometime and I guess the sooner the better." "That's the spirit; no point in dwelling on the past. You'll like it here, I think. Most of the boys do-regardless of their backgrounds or why they're here. I'll see you later." As Doc walked out the door, I realized that I felt very comfortable here. 'Doc was right, I think I'll like it here too.'
