Enjoy -- Tanner and Robert Chapter Three Deja vous (Robert) He (Kirk) also was mumbling some obscenities that one doesn't normally repeat in polite company ending with, "Eat me big time!" "In your wildest dreams, buddy. In your wildest dreams," I retorted. Chapter Three Robert Tanner waited patiently in the kitchen for Kirk and me as we did our morning oblations. That took only a few minutes. While I was brushing my teeth Kirk came in the bathroom and approached the urinal, unzipped his pants, took out his seven inches of man tool that he's nicknamed the "Big K", and began to take a leak. (My dad and I both have wall-mounted urinals in our bathrooms at mom's insistence. She claims we don't know how to aim properly at "little" targets like a normal toilet.) Seeing each other totally naked is nothing new for us since we were practically raised together -- like brothers. We took baths and showers together when we were little kids and still skinny dip in the pool when our parents aren't at home. The fact that I'm gay doesn't bother Kirk when it comes to our being naked together. We just don't take showers together anymore. That's just as well because I would probably spring a full-fledged woody right there in the shower in front of him. I wouldn't want to embarrass him or me, for that matter. "What do you think, dude?" he questioned as he stood there peeing. "You two sure look alike. That's not by accident, is it? I really do believe that you two are half-brothers. Kinda exciting to contemplate, isn't it? Damn, the implications are staggering." "Yea, and scary too," I responded. "Exciting at the same time, though -- a real mixed bag of emotions if the truth be told. Imagine the courage it took for him to want to connect up with a totally strange family or unfamiliar family, that is. (pause) I'm ready to go if you are. Got 'Big K' reeled back in ok? Need any help?" "Pervert, you know you couldn't handle something this big," Kirk retorted. "You're so accustomed to little things." "You've been peeking again, haven't you?," I immediately shot back. "Don't flatter yourself, needle dick," came his response as we walked out of the bathroom and headed for the kitchen. Tanner stood up as we entered. "Let's take my 'stang. The weather's nice outside so the top will definitely have to come down," I suggested. "It'll be a little crowded; but, hey, we're family. Right this way to the garage, Tanner." Turning to Kirk, I couldn't resist saying, "Keep your hands to yourself once we get in the car this time, buddy. Remember, we're got company with us. Wouldn't want my new brother to get the wrong impression about the neighborhood asshole." "Up yours, pencil dick," Kirk responded. "If I remember correctly, you were the one arrested for driving this car with the top down wearing only a raincoat." Kirk turned to Tanner and continued the banter, "Tanner, the sun was even shining at the time. The only reason he's not under the jail is because his mom's a big-time judge. She got him off! You sure you want to lay claim to this family member? There's still time to change your mind." Tanner laughed. "I may have to rethink my strategy now that you've pointed out that my brother may be a real pervert, a flasher! Imagine that! I hope it's not in the family gene pool." Kirk continued at my expense. "No, his gene's came from the shallow end of the gene pool. Yours are obviously from the deep end." "Ouch! that really hurt, especially coming from my bestest buddy. I may have to reevaluate that relationship myself," I retorted. The three of us continued laughing as we got in my car, Kirk in the passenger seat and Tanner in the back seat. I pushed the remote control button to open the garage door. Just at that moment Tanner remembered that he had parked his car in the driveway and realized that it was blocking our way out. "Opps, let me move my wheels. Sorry about that," he commented. Kirk "Dude, take at look at his so-called wheels, a red Porsche convertible," I exclaimed to Robert. "What bank did you hit?" Robert couldn't believe his eyes. "Damn, that's some set of wheels, as you call it." As he moved the car Tanner quipped, "No bank, just my parent's bank account." He hopped back in the 'stang. Tanner "When you two are finished ogling over my car, let's hit the road. I want to be here when your folks return from their shopping," Tanner responded with a grin and continued. "Hey, I've had the car over a year and I must confess, I ogle over it almost every morning myself. It was a present from my parents when I graduated from high school last year – as valedictorian of my senior class -- and received a full academic scholarship to Stanford, in Pre-med. I don't want you to think I'm bragging -- my parents did not spoil me -- I studied and worked hard for my scholarship." I began to unload my story, "My home is in La Jolla, California. Nine months ago my mom was diagnosed with terminal bladder cancer. She took a leave-of absence from her law firm that she had worked for since receiving her law degree. My mom was a fighter. She believed resigning would have been a sign of defeat. Robert interrupted, "Your mom's an attorney? So's mine. Wow!" I continued, "Dad decided also to take a leave-of- absence from his medical practice to care for mom -- he's an obstetrician. In fact, that's how they met. She was pregnant with me, and my Dad has just opened his Ob/Gyn clinic. She was one of his first patients." Robert again interrupted, "A doctor in the family too? This just can't be a simple coincidence. Must be 'Karma'; (pause) sorry, I won't butt in again." I hesitated a moment, took a deep breath, wiped my slightly tearing eyes with my sleeve and continued, Guys, this is hard reliving the past 9 months. My life has really been turned upside", I lamented. "When mom finally realized that her cancer was truly terminal, she called me one night at my apartment at Stanford and asked me to come home for the weekend. She and dad had something very important to speak with me about. Naturally, the first thing I thought was that she was nearing the point of death. Luckily, that wasn't true. By the way, my mom's name was Nan, Nan McGarity. "As far back as I can remember I had known that dad -- his name is Russell, Russell Kingston -- was not really my biological dad. He's from right here in Virginia, by the way. Still has lots of relatives in Richmond and Charlottesville. My parents had always been up front about that. When I came home that weekend, mom told me the whole story for the first time. "A little over 20 years ago when she was in college, she met and fell in love with a man named Robert Worthington -- your dad, Robert. She told me that he had recently broken up with his longtime college girlfriend. And, mom, too, has just gone through a painful breakup. They were both emotionally vulnerable at the time, mom said, and both on the rebound -- as the expression goes. "Anyway, they started dating, becoming emotionally involved very quickly. Their somewhat torrid affair -- to hear her tell it --lasted less than six months. At the end they mutually agreed to go their separate ways, parting on a friendly basis. However, Mom soon discovered that she was pregnant. She dropped out of college, moved back to her home in California, and met dad at the clinic. "Dad said that it was love at first sight. They were married two months before I was born. So, he's the only dad I've ever known. She never told your dad about being pregnant. In fact, he never saw her again after they broke up." "That really does make us half brothers!" exclaimed Robert with tears of joy and love appearing in his eyes as he comprehended the implications of what I just said. I continued, "Mom put up a good fight, but the cancer finally spread everywhere near the end. However, on Monday after the weekend I with them, Dad and mom were on their way home from the cancer clinic – May 1st, it was. I can't believe it's been 6 months." My voice broke a bit and after a short pause, I regained my composure and began again, "A car being driven by a drunk driver crossed over the median and collided head on with my parent's car. They were both instantly killed as was the driver of the other vehicle." The quiet in the car was deafening!. I realized after a few moments that Robert and Kirk had each reached out and were touching me. Tears filled the eyes of us all. Robert spoke first, "My God! I am so sorry." Kirk echoed Robert's words also but continued softly, "It took some real balls to come out here by yourself to confront -- oops, poor choice of words -- to meet your real dad after all the shit you've been through recently." "Guys, you know, it's been six months since my parents' death. I thought I was pretty much through the grieving process, but last night at the hotel, when I thought about finally meeting my dad at last -- that it really was going to happen -- all the pain surfaced again. I realized that I hadn't really dealt with it, that it's just been lying there under the surface, gnawing at me. I literally came apart last night." "Anyone in the room next to mine probably wondered just what was happening. I'm sure the wales of anguish and crying permeated the walls and hall. Images of mom and dad at my birthday party when I turned six; their sitting in the stands at the high school football games -- so proud of their son, the star athlete in their eyes; the graduation party at my house -- it all came back to me, and I grieved like I've never done before." "I suddenly felt so alone last night, so all alone. Both mom and dad -- gone. The one saving grace that helped me thought last night was knowing that I was lucky enough to still have a father out there -- and with a family. I just prayed that he would be interested in me -- in establishing a relationship with me." "God! He doesn't know that I exist," I sobbed. Then continuing, "I finally fell asleep emotionally exhausted sometime after three." Coming to grips with my raw emotions, I continued, "Robert, I have a younger brother, Kyle. He's sixteen, your age. I guess technically he's my half-brother since Russell is, or was, his dad. We're really very close though. In fact, it was all my uncle and I could do to keep him from coming out here with me. Granted, it would have been nice to have someone to talk with on this long trip; however, he had already made a summer commitment to attend the Governor's school of the Performing Arts in San Francisco. He's a very gifted organist -- very advanced for his age, we're told. "One of the last wishes my mom had was for me to find my father - - my biological father, that is. Even after all these years she maintained a special place in her heart for him –- I guess because of me. My dad had no objections to her desire that I search for him. Dad and I were very secure in our relationship, and in no way did he feel threatened by my mom's wish. "My uncle Jason, dad's younger brother who is single, has been living with us since the accident and has been so supportive in all kinds of ways. He's also an attorney and is handling all of the legal matters that Kyle and I are facing. In fact, he's become Kyle's temporary guardian. I don't need one since I'm 19. "When we decided to begin the search for my biological father, Uncle Jason hired a top-notch detective agency that has an excellent reputation for finding "lost relatives" with complete discretion. Within a week they had located your family. They even were able to compare your dad's DNA – taken from a glass in the hospital cafeteria -- with mine. We wanted to be 100 percent sure about our relationship before I attempted to contact you. That's how I knew your name." Turning to Kirk, "Your family showed up in the report also, Kirk. I knew who you were even before our being introduced. The company did a thorough background check, to say the least. They earned their high fee." I continued, "I left home last week and have been on the road for 8 days, stopping overnight in Richmond to visit with my dad's parents. They know and approve of my family quest. To tell the truth, I think they're almost as excited about my finding you as I am. They know how I've looked forward to this day for a long time." Robert I had just turned into the shopping center parking lot, found a spot near the entrance and shut off the car when Tanner finished this part of his story. We all sat there a moment in absolute silence. It was evident from the look on our faces that our emotions were just below the surface and, with the slightest nudge, would burst forth in ways teenage boys were not accustomed to displaying – especially in front of each other. However, I threw caution to the wind, turned a bit in the car seat, placed my hand on Tanner's knee and with a shaky voice said, "Welcome to the family, my brother!" That was all it took. Anyone walking by my car at that moment would have been puzzled why three teenage hunks were sitting there bawling their eyes out. After a bit of time we regained control of our emotions, entered the mall, completed our shopping tasks and finished our errands by picking up Kirk's little sister at her friend's house. Kirk introduced Tanner to Katy as a friend of the family -- for the moment. This was neither the time nor the place for Katy to know the real story behind Tanner's sudden appearance in our lives. We returned to my house and found that my parents had beaten us home. Tanner's face took on a look of apprehension as he turned to face me. He began, "I know this is the moment I've been anticipating for a long time, but, I must admit, I nervous as hell. Any idea how your dad is going to react to finding out he has a "bastard" son? And what about your mom?" My temper quickly rose to the top. I blurted out stronger than I meant, "Don't you ever refer to yourself as the "bastard" son again! In the first place that term has no meaning in our society -- maybe it did in the medieval period, but not now. If you want to label yourself -- and I'm not sure why you would -- maybe you might consider yourself the "prodigal" son returning home. In my way of thinking, you're my prodigal brother." I walked up to Tanner as my outburst cooled and gave him a big hug; he returned it with vigor! Walking up the front steps, I turned to Tanner and Kirkand said, "Tanner, I think it best that Kirk and I go in and get mom and dad to come to the library where we usually sit and have family meetings. You wait in the foyer until I come and get you. Is that ok with you? It won't be long." Tanner almost whispered his reply, "Sure, that's fine with me. Let's just get this over with -- don't know how much longer I can stand this waiting." My parents were in the kitchen munching on some snacks. As we entered mom spoke, "Hey, my sweet hunks. Been breaking the girls' hearts at the mall again? (If only they knew.) I blushed slightly and responded, "MOM!" Kirk was enjoying my discomfort and picked up on mom's comment, "Your hunk here had all the females of the opposite sex that worked at the sporting goods store drooling, or maybe they just did that naturally. That why you wanted to go in there so badly, brother?" I rejoined, "Up yours, Kirk. Opps! Sorry, mom. She and dad just grinned at my continued red face and tactfully ignored my comment to Kirk. I gathered my wits about me and, with a more solemn tone, said to my parents, "Can we go into the library for a few minutes? I have something we need to talk about. And, it's ok if Kirk comes along. He already knows." The jovial mood in the kitchen changed to one of a serious nature as we entered the library. There was a look of concern on my parents' faces so I immediately commented, "Nothing's wrong. No one is sick, hurt or injured; but, our lives, as we know them, are about to change. Please sit down." I nervously began, "Mom, Dad, I met someone today that I want you to meet. Believe me, you're going to find him interesting, to say the least!" I walked to the foyer door and opened it. Tanner walked in and approached the sofa where my parents were sitting. He extended his hand to shake with dad. "Hello, my name's David Kingston, sir. But most people call me Tanner. I think you knew my mother back in college. Her name was Nan, Nam McGarity.
