Chapter one Head west young man It was late spring and the late May sun felt warm on their faces as Seth MacDaniels and his sons Jacob, sixteen and Caleb, fifteen, inspected their team of oxen and the wagon. They were heading west from their hometown of Denton Texas and hopefully end in El Monte California. A warm westerly breeze kicked up the dust from dirt that the wagon sat on. Seth made a final glance at the ruins of what was a loved filled house. It was now a burned out remnant, the result of a Comanche raid that not only destroyed his house but took the life of his wife Rebecca. He walked over to the grave of his wife and knelt beside the simple cross that bared the name of his wife upon it. He couldn't understand how his God could allow his wife to die, but he also knew not to question his maker's ways. "I may be leaving you sweetheart, but I know that you are with our Lord," he hung his head and said a silent prayer before realizing that someone was standing beside him. He looked up. "Pa, are you alright?" Jacob asked as he stood beside his dad looking at the cross. "I was just saying goodbye to your ma," he replied getting up. "Everything is ready to go. I double checked the riggings and wagon twice pa." "Then let's go son, we're burning daylight," he said as he got up and wrapped his arm around his eldest son, walking back to the wagon. Caleb was already in the wagon waiting anxiously to get started on his adventure west. Seth and Jacob climbed up into wagon and Seth took the reins from Caleb. "Get up there," Seth yelled and the oxen moved forward, pulling the loaded wagon. *** Once they joined the others in town, Seth was taken by the number of wagons waiting to leave. There were over a hundred and fifty of them, each loaded and ready to move. He took his place behind the last wagon, as another four fell in behind him. "Well it looks like half the township is going west Seth," Frank Thurman said to Seth as he walked over to him. "Have you given your name yet to the wagon master?" "I was just about to report in Frank," he told him as Frank's boys, Monroe 19, Stephen 17 and Alex 13, joined their pa. "You boys wait here, we'll be but a minute," Frank told them and walked off with Seth. "It looks like everyone we know is leaving Denton," Monroe said as Jacob climbed down from the wagon. "Do you blame them, with the Indian raids why stay here," Jacob solemnly said as he remembered the one that took his mother from him. They spoke for the better part of twenty minutes before Seth and Frank returned. "We leave shortly boys," Frank told his sons and all bid their goodbyes to Seth and the boys. Seth climbed up into his seat and with Jacob on side of him and Caleb on the other; they waited for the wagon train to leave. They sat there and watched as the first began to move and within ten minutes it was their turn. Slowly the wagons moved along, pulled by a team of eight oxen. "We're really going pa... finally going," Caleb yelled whipping his hat around in the air. "Don't be so anxious to be going to where you don't know the perils that await you boy," Seth scolded. "I'm sorry pa, but this is exciting," Caleb said apologetically. They moved along at a steady pace, a desert route headed west, not as a single thread, but as a complex of trails with converging and diverging branches. Fed by roadways that originated in Missouri, Tennessee, eastern and central Texas, Santa Fe, northern Mexico and other wellsprings of emigration and commerce, the desert route evolved constantly over time, reflecting the growth in settlements and the increase in travel across the Southwest. It would become known as part of the Ox Bow Trail, which originated in Missouri and Tennessee and ended in San Francisco. Segments from southwestern New Mexico to the Pacific coast would become known as Cooke's Wagon Trail. The segment paralleling the Gila River would sometimes be called the Gila Trail. The entire length – from the Pecos to the Pacific – would be known by drovers as the Texas-California Cattle Trail. *** Just after dark, the wagons stopped for the night. Forming several circles formed by the wagons, they set up camp and prepared the evening meal before heading off to bed. "I want you boys asleep as soon as we finish up with vittles and clean up," Seth said as he dished out a stew of beans and dried beef. "Sure pa," Jacob said, smiling at his pa and shooting a fleeting glance at his brother. "But couldn't we walk around a bit pa? I promised Alex that I would see him after we ate." Caleb begged. "We'll be on the trail be daybreak so it's off to bed boy," Seth demanded sharply, and it was always Caleb that challenged his authority. "Just do what you're told Cal," Jacob whispered to his brother. They finished their meal and clean up before heading off to the wagon to bed. They spread their night rolls out under the wagon and climbed into them for the night. Caleb lay there waiting for the camp to calm down for the night. "Pssst... pssst," Caleb heard coming from the bushes. He looked over at Jacob who was snoring lightly before creeping out of his bedroll and scurrying off into the night. Once out of the light of the camp, Caleb found Alex waiting for him. He rushed into his waiting arms and they kissed... passionately. "I didn't think that you were going to meet me Cal," Alex said as they walked off hand in hand. "Pa told us to go to bed once we finished eating and did our chores," he said and turned to face his young lover, drawing him close to him in a tight embrace. "Well you are here now and we'd better hurry before we are missed," Alex told him. "But where are we going," Caleb asked. "Over here, I brought a blanket," he said taking him by the hand and leading him to where he had hidden the blanket. Within a dense thicket of wild bushes lay a blanket waiting for the two young lovers. They quickly shucked their clothes before Alex held out his waiting arms to Caleb. Caleb climbed on top of his lover and their lips met in love's sweet kiss. Caleb opened his mouth to Alex whose tongue searched his mouth. "Did you bring anything to use Alex?" he asked sitting up between the boy's spread legs. "I have some lard that I took from ma," and he reached over to retrieve the cloth with the lard inside it. Caleb grabbed a glob and rubbed it into Alex's sweet pucker before adding more to his own cock in preparation for their sex. He put his cock's head to the boy's rosebud and gave it firm push. Aided by the slippery lard, his cock fully entered Caleb. The boy stiffened his body as the invasion pained him. "Damn it Cal, you could have been easier," he whispered as he willed himself to relax. "It's the damn lard, it's so slippery that my cock just went all the way in Alex... sorry," he said and waited for Alex to relax. He bent down and kissed his lover and once he felt Alex's ass muscles relax, he began to attack the boy's ass with fervor. He lifted up on his arms and began to pound deep and hard into Alex. Soon the two had a rhythm that had them fucking like there was no tomorrow. Alex fisted his cock while Caleb aggressively fucked him. It wasn't long before the boys were at their edge. "Slow down please Cal... you have me so close," Alex moaned as he dropped his cock to let the climax ease back. "Your ass is so tight that I can't slow down... aaaah fuck I'm shooting Alex," he moaned as his cock erupted in the boy's ass. Alex began to fist his cock with furry as Caleb filled his ravaged bowels with his sperm. Soon he too was shooting his sperm all over his stomach and chest. "Do me... oh God do me," Alex moaned as his cock offered up its sweet elixir. Caleb fucked his friend hard and fast until they had surrendered all. Once spent, Caleb fell down on his lover and their mouths met in passion's kiss. "Mmmmm," Alex and Caleb moaned in unison as they rode out the tide of their passion. *** "Did you hear that Seth, that animal in not indigenous to these here parts?" Frank stated. "Comanche's or Kiowa's," Seth asked and the two walked back towards their perspective wagons. "I would venture to guess Comanche; because the Kiowa's don't usually come this far east I've been told." "In either event, I want to alert the boys and the others." Seth said hurrying his pace. "I'll let the others know to be alert and ready for any sudden attack," Frank said before running off. *** "I reckon that we should be getting back Alex. My pa will skin me alive if he catches me out and about when he ordered me to bed," Caleb said as the boys quickly got dressed. "My pa will do the same Cal... let's hurry cuz I am getting a funny feeling `bout being out here like this," he said as he pulled his suspenders up onto his shoulders. "Your stuff is running down my legs," he said and squeezed his ass cheeks together as he put his hat on. Alex rolled up the blanket after he shook it out and the boys gave a brief kiss before heading back in separate directions to their wagons. The noises of the night had Caleb spooked and the hair on the nap of his neck was standing tall. He quietly stole his way back towards the encampment and could see the fire lights in the distance. He heard a twig snap and then suddenly a hand covered his mouth as whoever it was pulled him to them. Caleb struggled briefly but his captor had to firm a grip on him. *** "Jacob wake up, where in tarnation is your brother," Seth asked a groggy Jacob. "He was right beside me pa... really he was," Jacob said as he looked over at the empty bedroll that belonged to his brother. "Maybe he needed to use the bushes... you know pa," he offered. "Damn... damn, there are Indians around. Get up and be alert son while I go looking for your brother," he said and walked off. He was just about to leave the safety of the wagons when an arrow caught him in the left arm. He screamed out in pain and ducked back behind the wagon for cover. "Indians... man your stations," he screamed as he pulled the arrow from his arm. "Pa... you've been hurt," Jacob said as he came running to assist his father. "Rip off a piece of my shirt and wrap it around my arm," he ordered as arrows flew all around them. "Keep down boy, I don't need to be burying you also," he ordered and Jacob lowered his himself to his knees. Jacob ripped the bottom of his pa's shirt off and wrapped it around his bleeding arm. Seth, once bandaged, took aim at the darkness. His mind was on Caleb and he silently prayed for the boy's protection. He focused on a shadow that seem to be moving when there was not the slightest hint of a breeze. He trained his firearm on the object and watched as a Comanche warrior appeared and crawled on his belly towards the wagon. He let out a shot and stopped the Indian dead where he lay. That brought the wild, frightening screams of more. Jacob was handing loaded firearms to his pa and Seth was firing as fast as he got the piece from Jacob. Soon he and Jacob were fighting hand to hand with their attackers. "Seth duck," a voice called out and Seth rolled to his right as a shot rang out, dropping the Indian that he was fighting to the ground. Another shot dropped to one that Jacob was fighting just as he was about to plunge his knife into the boy. "Pa... are you alright," Jacob shouted as he reloaded a rifle and quickly fired it at another Indian as he came charging at him. He too fell dead to the ground. *** After several more minutes of fierce fighting the Indians retreated. Women were running to assist those hurt while those that were alright kept watch. Catharine Thurman, Frank's wife, along with Alex and Stephen came running. "Ma'am... help my dad," Jacob called to her. Alex stood there and looked around for Caleb. When he didn't see him around he asked... "Where is Cal," he anxiously asked. "That is what I want to know," Seth said as Catherine redressed his wound. "I'm fine Catherine, I need to find my boy," he said getting up and feeling a bit wobbly. "You are in no shape to go traipsing out into the night. Not with those savages running loose," she added. "I need to find Caleb... I refuse to bury another family member," he said determined to go. "I'll grab a few men Seth and go looking for the boy," Frank said. "I need to go with you Frank," Seth said adamantly. "You have all you can do to stand never mind searching the darkness for Caleb. You wait here and we'll be back," he said just as adamant as Seth. *** Caleb lay on the ground motionless, as his captor lay still on top of him. To be continued.
