Previously…

Adam

I reach for the phone to switch it off and that’s all it takes. Suddenly everything slows down and although there’s nothing I can do I see every detail. The car heading straight for me frantically thumps his horn. I try to swerve to the left but it’s too late. The oncoming car hits me with full force sending the car spinning. I scream with gut clenching fear as the car keeps spinning. Finally the car comes to a stop and I can hear my father calling my name, but I’m too shocked to reply. I give myself a quick onceover to make sure I am ok and as I reach for the door handle I see a black van coming straight for me. I scream as everything goes black.

Sean

I look to the left and the most gut wrenching nauseous sight meets me. Adam’s car has been in the wreck. The car looks like a total write off and I’m struggling to see him anywhere. Panic rips through me as I pull over my car and jump out rushing to see if he’s ok.

Just as I make it near enough to him someone comes and pushes me away from the car. I look up to begin shouting at them when I realise the black van speeding towards Adam. I hear him scream and my body tenses as I scream no. Before I can blink or tear myself away from the scene the van smashes into the car sending it rolling down a hill.

Tears stream down my face as I run towards the shattered and broken remains of his car.

A Change Of Hearts

Chapter 3

BREAKING NEWS!

On Melton Road today there has been a pile up with at least six cars involved. Eye witness’s state that the first car was being driven by a young boy crashed head on into another car sending him spiralling across the road to a stop damaging most of the front of the car. Eyewitnesses then say a black van trying to swerve out of the way of the pile up lost control and crashed into the side of the car and sent it barrelling down the hill. The driver of the first car is on his way to Leicester General Hospital now.

Sean

ADAM! ADAAAM! I run in the direction of where his car is screaming a silent prayer that he’ll be ok. I run down the hill spotting parts of his car thanking god that he didn’t have his roof down on the car. I hear shouts from everywhere and people rushing down behind me trying to help. The car is upright at the bottom of the hill but a complete mangled mess; I rush to his side of the car trying to see any sign that he is alive.

My stomach lurches at the sight of all the bloody around. At first I resign myself to the fact he’s dead falling to the ground and dry heaving but then I hear it. The sweetest pained voice calling out quietly for help. I chance a look inside the car again and search for the eyes I love so much to see. He stares at me wide eyed confused, but too in pain to ask questions. I spot his hand and grasp it letting him know I’m here.

“Somebody get some help! Please has anyone called an ambulance?” I shout trying to hold back the tears again.

People shout they have and they are on the way. Out of the corner of eye I see paramedics rushing towards us.

“Has he been moved?” one of them shouts at me. Unable to speak I just shake my head He asks me to back away from the car which I reluctantly do. As I let go of his hand Adam’s eyes open wide and search mine for a reason why. My heart breaks and I watch as they skilfully remove him from his car. Once free they move quickly back up the hill and into the ambulance, screaming numbers and orders at each other. One in I move to get into the back of the ambulance.

“Are you his next of kin?” a paramedic barks at me quickly.

“No I’m his teacher. Please let me go with him. He looks so scared” I plead with him. He gives me a look of pity or maybe a look of knowing and nods for me to get into the back of the ambulance. I grasp onto Adam’s hand again and he looks at me and squeezes back before he closes his eyes. After around ten seconds machines in the ambulance start flashing and beeping. My breath hitches as I watch him slip away.

Daniel (Adam’s Dad)

That disobedient little fuck! I swear since he told us about him he thinks that gives him a license to talk to us however he wants. Well not really us, He talks to my wife Marissa like the sun shines from her but me he regards with coolness and distrust. Ok I get it I reacted badly to him being gay but I never thought for one second that I would have a gay son! I don’t have a problem with them really I just didn’t want one in my family.

I sit in the living room seething after the argument I just had with him. I really don’t know how to deal with him these days. I try not to treat him any different from his brother, I try to include him in the things we do but he never seems interested or grateful. I just wanted to take both my boys fishing really do some bonding. But no he has to mince in here and turn it right down without even thinking about it. He should be into some sort of sport it’s the way boys are meant to be for crying out loud. They shouldn’t be mincing around singing and dancing. They should be strong and fight for themselves and their family. They should reproduce and create a family to carry on the line.

A couple minutes later Adam comes down stairs and storms out of the house. At first I think he’s going to the outdoor den, Then I hear his car starting up! How dare he!?! I am absolutely taken over by an all-consuming anger and before I can decide against it I am dialling his mobile number. He cannot behave the way he just did and then go driving around in the car that I bought him. Finally on the sixth try he answers.

“What!?!” he snaps towards the phone. Oh this child is a world of trouble.

“You better get back here now your grounded!”   I roar down the phone, wishing at that moment I could just reach in and backhand him.

“What for may I ask you?” Why this cocky fucking pansy boy!

“Because I said so home now” My voice now is dangerously quiet. A voice my boys know not to fuck with.

Expecting him to carry on arguing I try my best to calm my temper down when I hear the blood curdling scream. I jump up and instantly start calling his name. What I hear next chills me to the bone. The sickening sound of metal twisting and crunching  and glass breaking and before I register it I am on the floor gasping for air and screaming out my child’s name between sobs.

Silence follows and I keep calling his name praying for him to answer me. I hear his moans and then another blood curdling scream followed by more twisting metal and broken glass. I run for my mobile phone and call my wife who works at the hospital.

“Marissa Mason” She answers coolly.

“Marissa! I think.. I think.. Adam’s been in a car accident..” I stammer between sobs looking for my car keys.

“What? No..” She gasps.

“I’m going to try to find him I’ll call you if I’m wrong”.  I snap and hang up the phone.

I rush out the front door jump in the car begin speeding in the direction Adam left. I have left the house for a total of four and half minutes when I come across the crash site. My stomach lurches at the amount of damage around. I watch an ambulance speed away and I hope it isn’t my son inside of it. I get out of my car and start frantically searching for him and asking people if they have seen him using a family picture in my wallet as a point of reference. I look down a hill and spot the mangled remains of his car. A moment later a woman comes to me and tells me she recognises the picture and my son is on the way to the hospital. Quickly thanking her I quickly run back to my car and head to the hospital with a gut wrenching feeling. This is my entire fault.

Marissa (Adam’s Mum)

2 Minutes after the call from my husband the call from the ambulance is put in to tell us we have three victims coming into the hospital from a car pile-up as my sons name is called the hospital staff turn to look at me sympathetically. Feeling a wave of sickess rush over me I run to the bathroom and heave my lunch into the toilet bowl, crying at the same time. I have to work hard to make sure I don’t have a panic attack. Resuming my resolve I rush back into the emergency room just as the victims are coming in. I spot my baby and run over to him.

“What have we got?” I bark at the paramedic trying hard not to cry.

“He has multiple cuts to various parts of his body and glass in some of those cuts. We have bone protrusion in his left arm and swelling in both legs. He has cuts to the left side of his head and possible a skull fracture. Massive blood loss as well as possible internal bleeding” He reels off to me with professional speed and sympathy in his eyes.

“Ok let’s stabilise the blood loss and get him a blood transfusion. He’s AB negative so get that going now. I want his vitals checked and then I want him in XRAY and I want a CT scan taken. Let’s move now” I order the staff in an authoritive way.

Just I begin checking his vitals my manager calls me out of his room.

“What do you want Mark?” I seethe at him dangerously inpatient.

“You can’t work on him Marissa, you know you can’t. Hospital policy. You go and deal with the rest of the patients and I will personally look after your son. I will do my best for him I promise” He replies with conviction and a softening in his eyes.

I nod blankly and carry on with the rest of the patients angry that there is nothing I can do for my son. Once they have been stabilised my husband rushes in with my other son Christian. They both have red rimmed eyes and Christian is still crying. Even before Adam was out of my womb he and Christian were best friends and almost inseparable. Only as they have gotten older they have drifted apart, but only because they like different things, and have different friends. But what is sweet is they still make time for each other, even when things are really busy.

I hug my family fiercely but notice something in my husband’s eyes. He has never been ever to hide something from me. I decide to leave it for later though. A couple of minutes later I hear cold blue and watch as they wheel him out of the room running towards emergency surgery. I run after them leaving my family behind desperate to find out what’s going on with Adam.

“Mark what the hell is happening?” I shout running after my precious boy.

“He has a collapsed lung and what looks like a tear in the right ventricle of his heart. There is also massive internal bleeding to his liver and kidney, and his spleen needs to be removed. We have to operate now or we will lose him. We have already had to resuscitate him twice. I’ll keep you updated” He barks and then runs through the doors.

I stare after them at a loss for words. I turn around to search for my family and find them staring after him, Christian struggles to hold himself together. I grab their hands and walk towards the family waiting room for the inevitably long wait we have ahead of us.

Sean

Since we got to the hospital I haven’t been able to see Adam. The whole situation is driving me crazy. All the way here I held his hand and tried to keep him awake singing softly too him. The paramedics looked at me like I was crazy, and I’m wondering if I’m crazy myself. I barely know this man really, all I know of him is what I’ve heard in class and what I’ve seen but I can’t seem to stop thinking about him.

As we reach the hospital they rush him through and a woman I’ve seen before rushes up to the bed looking stricken. I rack my brains trying to work out who she is when I overhear her having a conversation with her boss. SHIT she’s his mother. I cannot let her see me, this goes way above the call of duty and frankly it will look weird. I start to leave the hospital but I can’t seem to walk out of those doors. I resolve myself, against my subconscious to wait until I know he’s ok.

I slip into the hospital waiting room and listen out for any information on his recovery. Before long she comes in with who must be her husband and Adam’s older brother. I bow my head down hoping they won’t pay too much attention to me and wait for further information. What I hear next stops me in my tracks.

Daniel

I can’t believe this has happened. I’m numb with fear for my baby boy. IT feels weird thinking of him that way but that’s who he is too me. That’s why I want to protect him all the time, especially from this cruel world which mostly regards my son with disgust. I catch my wife staring at me and I know she is going to work it out eventually.

“Christian will you go and get your father and I some coffee please” she asks him quietly.

Christian gets up without a word and leaves quickly. She turns her steely gaze on to me.

“Daniel. What aren’t you telling me?” She whispers dangerously quietly.

“Marissa it doesn’t matter now. Let’s just get through this and we will talk then” I mutter trying to diffuse the situation.

“Daniel Mason I swear to god if you don’t tell me what the hell is going on I am going to lose it” She whispers getting up and walking closer to me.

“How did you know Adam was in a car crash?” She asks.

“Marissa please” I plead almost to the point of whining.

“TELL ME!” She roars an anger emanating from her body the likes I’ve never seen.

“We had an argument, before he left. I wanted him to go fishing and he didn’t want too. I said some things out of order about him not being a man. He stormed out the house and I wanted him home so I called him. We were arguing when the car hit him. He must have reached for the phone or something and didn’t see it coming. I’m so..” The story just falls from my mouth as my wife sits there looking at me in complete shock. I don’t hear Christian come in and he hears the last of my story.

Before I can put my hands up to stop him he’s on me raining down punches like he’ll never stop.

“HE COULD DIE!! You did this! You caused this! You put my little brother, your SON in hospital! All because you don’t like his sexuality!?!” He roars. I put up no fight to stop him. I want him to hit me to take it out on me. It is my fault. Finally Marissa manages to get him off me and clings to him crying with him.

After she manages to calm him down she walks up to me and slaps me leaving a resounding ringing in my ear.

“Baby I’m sorry! I didn’t know this would happen. I’m so sorry.” I weep begging for forgiveness.

“Save it baby. I want you out of this hospital and when I get home you’d better be out of my house. Do you understand me?” She says with total conviction trying to hide the pain in her eyes.

“And if he dies, I just want you to know I will never forgive you, and I hope you rot in hell”. She whispers.

I get up and gather my coat up. I look at Christian who glares at me and I watch as my family crumbles away from me. Slowly and without looking back I walk out of the waiting room and out of the hospital.

Sean

The feelings that pass through me as I listen to that pathetic man are so strong they are dizzying. First is absolute shock at the way he treated Adam for something he can’t decide and then absolute seething anger when he reveals he’s the reason Adam is in this mess in the first place. It takes everything I have not to jump up and kill that man where he stands. Luckily Christian messes him up enough for the both of us.

As he leaves the waiting room I contemplate following him out and dealing with him. But my desire to be as close to Adam as possible makes me leave him and I quickly decide I’ll bide my time. I do hope his wife follows through on chucking him out though. All of a sudden I’m tired and I feel myself dozing, giving myself a rest from the overbearing emotions of the day.

I quickly settle to sleep dreaming of nothing other than my brown eyed boy.

AUTHORS NOTE:

So a lot went on in this chapter I but I thought it best to try and put everyone’s reactions into this part before we move on. So what do you think about what happened? Were you expecting Marissa and Christian to behave the way they did? Do you think they were wrong to behave that way? How long do you think it will be before they realise who Sean is? And what do you think their reactions will be?

Please stay tuned and let me know what you think of the story so far.. Its love to hear comments from the readers may I also say a big shout out and thank you to Jeansguy48 and Mr Goater the first people to give me feedback.

If you would like to comment of send some pictures through feel free the email is achangeofheartsseries@hotmail.co.uk
