"Unbelievable", was all I could muster as a comment, we were sat on the sea wall looking up towards our newest home. Behind the wrought iron decorative railings separating it from the promenade walkway stood a property which was truly magnificent. Central to the plot was the main building, from this elevation there were four levels. The top floor had our private four bedroom suite with separate nursery suite and Nannies accommodation. The next floor down housed the great room, kitchen and entrance foyer, entered into via a sweeping circular driveway from the main road on the other side of the property. That floor enjoyed an entire wall of glass looking out to sea which folded back in sections giving a completely open aspect to a large patio. One level below the great room were five large bedrooms, all opening out onto another furnished balcony running the full width of the building and leading down to the lower level. The lowest level housed an office, garaging which was accessible via a ramp at the left of the building, plus laundry, freezer room and various storage rooms plus the pool pump room. The lower level also opened out to beautiful gardens with a swimming pool, jacuzzi and seating areas shaded against the sun by trellises and parasols. Lenny had incorporated an elevator to ease the access between our apartment on the top floor and the working rooms on the bottom floor, and to allow people and goods to be transported between floors On each side of the main building there was a semi circle of four individual bungalows sloping down toward the promenade, each had a lounge, master suite and small kitchen on the ground floor and two further en suite bedrooms on the first floor. The ground floor lounge and master suite both opened out onto a private patio with comfortable furniture. We had expected there to be quite a bit of work still to do but in fact only a few snag fixes needed attention and the building was almost ready to be signed off as complete. I whispered to Lenny, "How much did you promise as a timely finish bonus?". Lenny looked guilty, "100,000.00 Euros, sorry PJ, I wanted to see it finished before Christmas". I knew she was uneasy because I'd guessed about the finishing bonus but instead of being annoyed I was impressed she'd had the forethought to include that clause, "Lenny I'm annoyed". She looked completely crushed, "I'm not annoyed because of the amount you promised as a finishing bonus Lenny, I'm annoyed because you're doing it again, you're apologising for spending our money, however you could redeem yourself by giving them a little extra if they complete your dream in time for us to spend Christmas here". I was smiling and she realised I was teasing. "You've sussed my motives PJ, would you mind if we spent Christmas and New Year here ?". I drew her into a hug, "All I want is you and the brood, where we are is irrelevant, but I have to admit it is a lovely setting so let's forget about business, it's been a hard year, gather our family, all of them, and let's enjoy the holidays". I had to laugh as we toured the main house, they didn't think I saw when Lenny and Rosa exchange a thumbs up. Rosa had her work cut out over the next few days recruiting a permanent staff for the property but she already had that mostly in hand following our recommendation to speak to the family who owned and ran the cafe/restaurant we favoured on the promenade. We'd already found out that two of the sisters from the family had branched out and opened their own cafe/restaurant which had not been as successful as had been hoped for and it would probably have to close leaving two families without any income. Of the two families, one was a couple with one child a daughter, the other family had suffered a tragedy just over 2 years ago when the husband had been killed in a motorcycle accident leaving his widow to bring up two children, a boy of six and a girl of five. Rosa arranged to interview both families with us present, (something we deemed necessary because we needed to know everyone could get on together from both their and our point of view). The first to be interviewed was the family of three, Ana, her daughter Analee and son Anton. All three impressed us, Ana was a first class cook, something her larger family had already confirmed, she was prepared to work hard and told us she had qualified in general maintenance since her husbands untimely death to be able to keep up with general maintenance issues, she was prepared to work for a reduced wage because she didn't have a husband but promised she would take up all of the duties he would have been expected to carry out. All in we were tempted to just offer her the job there and then but in fairness we had promised the other family an interview so we thanked them for putting up with all of our questions and promised a decision the following day before I left for New York. The second family were like a copy of the first except there were two adults and one child, Cesar, Allis and their daughter Alma were equally as enthusiastic in wanting the job and their enthusiasm was infectious, one thing in particular surprised us and endeared them to us, they asked that if it was a straight choice between the two families that we choose the first family, reasoning that it would be easier for them to secure another post than it would for the first family because of the loss of the father. Again we thanked them and promised a decision the following day. That afternoon we sat around discussing the pros and cons of both families and as had happened with the nannies we couldn't decide between them. Finally it was Rosa who came up with the solution, the cook from our traveling household party had tendered her notice, she was sorry but she didn't find constantly being away from home as appealing as she thought she would. Rosa suggested that the second family be appointed as household staff for the Lanzarotte house and we offer the first family a position of Cook in our traveling household staff, the children could join all the others in being schooled by Phil, giving Phil a class of six. The following morning we'd arranged to meet the adults to discuss our proposals. Lenny and I sat back and allowed Rosa to take the lead, "Thank you all for bearing with us while we deliberated, we've made a decision. Cesar and Allis we want to offer you the household position here taking care of our house". It was almost heartbreaking to watch Ana hug her sister in congratulations whilst her heart was broken knowing she had lost out. Ana stood up to leave, thanking us for the opportunity to at least apply and get the experience of being interviewed. Rosa cut in, "Ana we have a proposal for you as well, we have a vacancy on our traveling staff for a first class cook, it means you could be called on to cater for up to thirty but you would have the rest of the traveling household staff and the resident staff to assist you, think you could cope with that ?". Ana was overjoyed but suddenly looked worried, Rosa picked up on her expression, "It's okay Ana, Analee and Anton are included and shortly we should have in place a tutor so their schooling will be taken care of as well whilst we're traveling, our home base is Torremolinas but most of the year we circulate around Europe, now if you're ok I'll hand you over to Mr and Mrs Thorn to elaborate and then I'll discuss your salary and accommodation, meanwhile I'm going to chat with your sister and brother in law. Rosa left taking Cesar and Allis to a separate table to discuss what the housekeeping job entailed. Lenny started the conversation to put Ana at ease, "Ana we wanted to be a part of the interview process because you will have access to our family and we needed to know that we all could get along, well we're reassured that's not a problem so we'd really like to welcome you onboard. Ana was visibly grateful, "Thank you Mr and Mrs Thorn I promise to do my best and my children will be no bother at all". I jumped in, "Ana first off it's Lenny and PJ unless we're in an official situation, we'll leave you to make the judgement call on that, but as far as your children are concerned leave them to be children, they'll have plenty of aunts and uncles to spoil them in our family and with our three plus Rosa and Leo's one and Casey's two they'll have plenty of cohorts or partners in crime to allow them to be mischievous children". Rosa finished up discussing the employment packages and it was agreed Cesar, Allis and Alma would take up residence within the next week, they were even more surprised when Lenny explained that the individual bungalows looked identical from the garden but the first one on each side had been built out at the rear with private decks on both floors to allow a family some private space so whichever one they chose was okay. Ana, Analee and Anton would be ready to leave in five days when Lenny moved on to London, becoming part of our traveling staff. The next morning Casey and I said our farewells and left for the airport at Arrecife where Ben and his crew were waiting for us. Once aboard we were airborne within minutes and on our way to New York. The flight was smooth and we both took the opportunity to complete plenty of work on the flight. Ben took us gently down into Teterboro and Pip had our transport waiting. We headed directly to the apartment. I was surprised by Josh's progress it was amazing, he was walking, short distances, but walking non the less and he looked great, he had colour where he had been a pasty white from his time in a hospital bed. Josh's sense of humour had returned as well, "The colour is a bye product of spending so much time on your rooftop, I'm becoming the bat in your belfry PJ". We sat and talked for some time between Josh's bouts of physio, I wanted to check something with him because if I went ahead with my plans it could leave Josh in either a very happy or very uncomfortable position eventually. "Josh I'm here to appoint the CEO for North America and I need to run my plans by you. I realise whoever I appoint will eventually be working for you when you are well enough to resume work, the last thing I want is to cause you problems down the line, so, do you want me to tell you who I have in mind ?". Josh had been looking at me, studying my actions, he could see how nervous I was. "No, there's no need, you would only be this nervous about one person, I know who you have in mind and I agree, it's who I would have wanted to appoint if he didn't think it would smack of favouritism, it's a relief really because if you do it then you save me a lot of grief, he can't refuse you the way he would me, but tell me why PJ". He paused to I think get the right words. "Don't get me wrong I'm not questioning your decision, I just want to compare, maybe reassure myself I wasn't blinkered". I smiled, "Josh, there was a time when we were so close we each knew what the other was thinking almost every second of the day and although we're not that close anymore, we still have a connection, we still think alike, neither of us needs to validate our decisions, you were always right, Bryan is the right choice, I'm going to be talking to him tonight, do you want to be in on that conversation?". Josh was quiet for a few moments then he looked up," I don't think it's a case of me wanting to be there, I think you need me to be there, and you'll need Billy there as well because he'll turn you down, he'll resign, tell you he's going back to Fielding Presidential, he'll do everything possible to block you so as to not put me in what he believes will be a compromising situation, I think it's going to take all of us to convince him he's the one for the job". He paused again, deep in thought. I was a fool PJ, but I'm capable of learning, I lost it all once, I've been very, very lucky, I have another chance and by god I'm not letting go this time and eventually you're going to stand by my side when I pledge myself to this man forever, but for now let's just get him to agree to be the CEO for North America". I'd talked at length with Billy that afternoon, he agreed with me it was a fantastic opportunity for Bryan though he was a little surprised when I told him just how good Bryan was, he joked at one stage that maybe he should scupper my plans and get Bryan back to Fielding but I knew he was joking. We planned the evening like a military operation, dinner was deliberately low key just the three of us, Josh, Bryan and I. Billy had entered via the service lift and service entrance and the staff sneaked him into my office. As soon as dinner was over Josh's aides helped him into his wheelchair and took him off for his physio and eventually to bed, (actually they took him into my office where Billy was already waiting). I waited the agreed thirty minutes then asked Bryan to join me in the office, I said I wanted to discuss business if he didn't mind, I picked up the bottle of Chardonnay we'd been enjoying and took it into the office. I purposely sat in my chair behind the desk with Bryan facing me, ignoring the fireside seating behind him. I could see Bryan was a little nervous, not sure if I was going to chastise him. "Don't look so nervous Bryan it's nothing bad in fact I'm hoping you think it's a good thing. I came back to New York specifically to deal with the new management structure we're putting in place". I deliberately paused to let that sink in. "Josh knows what I have planned and he's fully in agreement". I paused again and topped up our glasses. "Over the years we've run Woodruff with just the board members as senior managers and God only knows how we've managed it but we have. However, and this is the problem, as the company's gotten bigger it's become more difficult to keep up with events and Josh's accident really showed us the folly of not having a stronger management team in place, it's left me stretched to the limit and more". Bryan nodded in agreement. "I've already appointed a CEO for Europe, I'm not sure if you've heard anything but I've appointed Ramon to the position, he will appoint a CEO to manage each Country or area in Europe and now I need to do the same here. I plan on there being one CEO for North America who for the time being will report to me but eventually will report to Josh when he's fit enough to return to work. I want that CEO to divide North America into four or five areas, that will be his choice, and to appoint a CEO for each of those areas, so what are your thoughts ?". Bryan looked a little puzzled, "PJ I appreciate you trusting me with this information, I'll be candid because I know you prefer to cut to the chase, I think you have your work cut out if you're intending to try promoting from within". He paused as if unsure whether to voice the next part but he eventually went on. "Josh isn't here and I hope he won't mind if I share something with you for the sake of the company, though I suspect he's already briefed you on what I'm about to say. Before his accident we debated at length the strengths and weaknesses within the various General Management Teams across North America and I know he was intending to have a general weed out of the weaker elements and there are quite a number. He paused again as if debating had he said too much but I could see him decide he could go on. "I could only name five candidates for you where I would stake my reputation and the most prominent would be David Parnell, along with Abbey and the two guys in Boston who recommended David to you plus someone I don't think you've met. His name is Will Redman, I've known him since college, we roomed together, he used to work at The Presideo Towers Hotel but he was fired because he chewed out the daughter of an executive for repeatedly deserting her post to have sex with guests, he's currently heading up our guest relations here in New York and he's someone we don't want to lose ". What Bryan had told me was no surprise, he was right Josh had laid all of this out for me recently and apologised for the burden I'd inherited because of his accident, I was nodding agreement before continuing. "You're nearly right Bryan, Josh has shared most of that information with me and I know how concerned he is with the standard of our North American General Managers, the only point you slipped up on is one other name who is a front runner for the CEO position". He was looking puzzled as if trying to think who he'd missed so I carried on. There is one clear front runner, someone who doesn't even see what a gem he is, doesn't realise that every day he leads by example, nurtures, encourages, teases out the very best from everyone, that's you Bryan, I want you to take the position". To say he was shocked would be an understatement, he reminded me so much of Ramon, he had no idea of how good he was, he was mumbling, "No, no, that's, no you can't, I couldn't, David is the obvious choice, it would be a problem, it would hurt Josh, I'm sorry PJ, I know you've done so much for me but I can't do this, I won't risk hurting Josh, if you insist I'll have to leave". By this time there were tears in his eyes so I thought it time to bring in the cavalry. I directed my voice and gaze toward the seating area behind Bryan. "Ok guys, I admit you were right, both of you, so I guess you'd best come on out and help me convince this wonderfully modest man that when I want something I usually get it and when I choose, I only choose the best". From the wingback armchairs behind Bryan appeared Josh helped to his feet by Billy Fielding. Bryan looked shocked, "You bastards, you were in on this, I should have known, but it makes no difference I can't accept, you should understand why Josh, it would cause so many problems, people would say I was only promoted because of our relationship, I won't allow anything to hurt you or us, you're too precious to me, I'd rather walk away, Billy you said I should have been working for Fielding Presidential well it's looking like I'm available". Billy was smiling, "Remember you owe me 100 Dollars PJ, now Bryan, forget it, Fielding Presidential is right out of jobs, so I'd take the one on offer if I were you. Bryan now looked defeated and slumped down in his chair. Billy sighed, I could see he wanted to get this just right to make Bryan understand what he meant. "Seriously Bryan if you're going to cite nepotism as a reason for running you should include everyone in this room". I watched as Bryan looked quizzically at Billy, at least he was interested enough to listen. "This is not meant to be an insult to anyone so I'll start with myself. I inherited the CEO post at Fielding because my parents were killed in a plane crash, okay I would probably have been headed there anyway but not for a long time to come, I didn't have to prove myself to get the job but I've had to prove myself every day since if for no other reason than to honour my parents and the loyalty most of my staff showed me". Billy paused, his face said it all, he was thinking of the parents he'd loved so dearly and lost so dramatically. Then there's my partner in crime since age five, PJ, like me he inherited his position because his mother and grandmother died, he took up the mantle despite the backstabbing bastards and an arsehole for a father who never showed him one ounce of love and caused more trouble than he ever resolved, but every day he earns the respect of everyone around him". He paused again. Then there's Josh, he inherited his shares in the company from PJs grandmother because he was PJs partner, he got his position on the board the same way but just like PJ and I, Josh gives 200 percent every day and earns the respect he deserves so he more than anyone else here knows what you're talking about but I'm guessing he's confident you can prove any doubting Henry's wrong. I would love dearly for you to be working with me at Fielding but not this way, you're a Fielding, we don't cut and run we stand up and fight for recognition, I will make you a promise, hand on heart, one day we will work together, just not yet". Bryan looked a little crestfallen when Josh chipped in. "Bryan, I love you, I really hope you're certain of that, and it's not going to change whatever the outcome today. I would have promoted you a long time ago, but for your refusals. I gave in to your pleas that you wanted to make your mark on your own, well I let you do what you wanted and this is the result, it's what you alone achieved, you got to be noticed as a front runner, a leader, someone who can instil the urge to go that extra mile in others because you'll do it alongside them". Josh paused. "Bryan it could be Woodruff, Fielding, or any other company you'd chosen to work for because you don't know how to do anything other than give your all and that's the key Bryan, it's why PJ wants you". Josh paused again while Bryan took in all he'd heard, then went on. "What you're doing is an insult to PJ, you're his choice because he sees a capable man who he has faith in, he doesn't offer nepotism posts, he never has and never will, despite what anyone thought at the time when I inherited my shares, I'm where I am because I do a bloody good job and no other reason, I don't have to ask PJ to confirm that, nor would I have it any other way. I agree with his choice and I know we can work together when I'm ready to come back now stop being so fucking stubborn and accept the fucking job so we can get to the celebration part I've got a special fucking pass from my jailers tonight and you're wasting time ". Bryan seemed overwhelmed, he looked from Josh to Billy then finally to me, "What they said, I trust you to answer me honestly, are they telling the truth?". I smiled, I knew I had him now, "Every single word is true including that you cost me 100 Dollars when Billy bet your exact response, oh and, David Parnell was my second choice after you but I'm guessing by now he also has something to tell you because Ramon snapped him up as CEO Spain and Canaries, so that leaves you with Abbey, the two guys from Boston and Will Redman, seems you already have four of your five possibles you just need to find one more, now can we go celebrate ?". "Yes and thank you PJ, I'm sorry I've been so difficult, I'll do my best I promise". Another problem solved. Billy had been texting whilst we talked and Bryan's phone started beeping wildly to signal multiple incoming texts, as he looked at it he smiled, but there were tears in his eyes, he had congratulatory texts from Julia, Lenny, Leo, Ramon, David Parnell, Abbey and a whole host of others including Gramps who'd just put 'Welcome aboard Bryan, remember we only take the best'. We went out to celebrate at The Fielding Presidential New York, Julia and Casey joined us and we took a prime table, Gramps sent a bottle of champagne to be presented to 'Bryan Fielding CEO North American Operations Woodruff Group'. By tradition when the most expensive champagne was uncorked the Maitre d announced Bryan's full title and the whole restaurant rose to applaud him. The night was not long because Bryan in true form was concerned that Josh might be overdoing it, but it was a good night with pleasant company, and for me a wonderful relief that I had my man onboard. The following few days were taken up with outlining the job requirements for Bryan who caught on quickly. I told him to contact my Woodruff PA when he and Josh were ready to move into their apartment and have his home office setup charged back to Woodruff. Bryan seemed a little confused, "Sorry PJ I figured you would want me traveling all over the country, but I thought you'd want me to base myself out of the Woodruff Corporate Office". I realised I'd completely forgotten to share this part of my plan. "I apologise Bryan that's my fault I should have explained earlier. Myself, Gramps and eventually Josh will be based at Woodruff Corporate, though in my case I'll rarely be there, I'll operate out of my office in Torremolinas, but my idea is that the CEOs don't need the stifling environment that sometimes prevails at our Corporate Headquarters. I want all CEOs from your level down to have no one looking over their shoulder and to be free to set their own working hours and diaries, free to experiment with differing working practices so how you monitor your staff and spend your budget is entirely down to you". I paused because it was essential that Bryan understood what was on the line here. "I can't stress enough how much of a risk I'm taking with this approach Bryan , I won't lie, both Gramps and Josh are skeptical they have expressed a belief that I'm being naive, that we will see CEOs taking advantage, I on the other hand have faith, I believe I've chosen wisely, I believe my choices will repay me with loyalty, that's your queue to say, Yes Boss". When I finished I was smiling so was Bryan, "Yes Boss, only that's not a queued answer, it's a very truthful promise". That nights dinner was a very small number, myself, Casey, Josh and Bryan. I surprised the guys after dinner by inviting them into the office where I opened up a teleconference link to Torremolinas, the link opened with Lenny smiling, "Hello my lover, it's time you came home, I miss you. Josh I need an update on your progress, I need to know if you can fly because if you can you and Bryan are spending Christmas at our new home in Lanzarotte. Casey that means you're free at Christmas if you and Phil have plans because Leo will be with us, but we'd love it if you Phil and the kids could join us too, talk it over with Phil on the flight back here and hurry that husband of mine, he tends to dawdle if I'm not there to smack the back of his head. Oh I forgot I've got Ramon here with a request". Ramon moved in front of the camera, "Hi guys, PJ I need to ask a favour, I need David Parnell relocated back here and I wondered about you bringing him back with you, it seems he and Bryan have been busy, they've already found replacement General Managers so both are surplus and free to take up their new roles". I assured Ramon we would bring David back with us, and told Lenny I was pretty much finished, I'd already spoken to Ben he would be flying in tomorrow and we would leave early the day after tomorrow getting us home early the following morning. The following day I called Pip and asked her to check what David would be transporting, I also asked her to do me a personal favour and check that Ramon hadn't overlooked accommodation for David, surprisingly she didn't object which in itself was unusual as it wasn't personal business it was corporate and technically not in her remit but then again where Ramon was concerned she never seemed to object. Interesting!!!. Casey, popped into the office in a mild panic to tell me Phil and the kids were delayed he was midway into an apology when I stopped him I was more interested in what went wrong. "Zach had a bad fall from his bike and right now they can't be sure if his ankle is just badly sprained or broken, the results should be in soon but Phil's been waiting about six hours for the results". Casey explained they hadn't been able to afford anything but a basic Medicare package so they weren't prioritised. I chastised Casey because he had a full family medical cover package as part of his salary with me and he cursed his stupidity. I was dialling as I asked Casey which hospital Phil was at and once I had the details and the call answered I asked to be connected to Charles Hepworth, there was a short wait before I heard, "PJ old pal what a pleasant surprise, Celia was only talking about you yesterday, but I digress, if you're calling me you must have a need so tell me what I can help you with?". "It's good to speak to you Charley and I do also have an urgent need to catch up with you both in the next day or so, but can we talk later at home on that ?, you're right I have a particularly important problem, my right hand man on security forgot he had top notch Medicare and his son is languishing in emergency waiting on the results of a possible broken ankle could you speed things up for me, I gave him the details of the hospital?". "Hold for me PJ lets get a fire lit under the medics at this hospital first then we'll talk". The line went to the usual hold music so I put it on speaker whilst we waited. I told Casey to call Phil and tell him he'd be called and dealt with in the next few minutes and as soon as we knew more we'd amend our plans, meanwhile I'd put the call on speaker and an operator came on the line, "Mr Thorn, this is the White House, Director Hepworth apologises for keeping you holding but he's dealing with the matter right now and promises he'll call you back in a few minutes to save you holding". I thanked her and cut the call. Casey had heard the operator and his eyes were bugging, he was talking to Phil and agreeing to something, he handed his phone to me, "Mr Thorn this is Phil, I don't know what you did but I have an FBI Agent here who tells me I'm White House priority so thanks, he's got a badly sprained ankle, I'm so relieved, and I'm sorry we were a nuisance". "Phil you weren't a nuisance and It's PJ, I'm just glad I could help now are you going to be okay to travel tomorrow because I thought we could let young Zac rest overnight and we'll divert to pick you up tomorrow if you're okay with that ?". Phil agreed and I told him I'd have Pip call him with the details of times in the morning. Casey started to apologise again but I waved him off, "Casey I'm a father I understand but get Phil clued in on all of your benefits and here's the worst part, you get to call Pip and explain the detour we need Ben to make, I left Casey trying to get a word into the conversation with Pip as he was ripped a new asshole by one formidable lady. The following morning Josh and Bryan confirmed they would join us for Christmas but Josh was fretting about traveling out. I told them that was taken care of they'd travel out on Gramps plane with Gramps, Edward and Esther. We left at 10am and Ben met us at the Teterboro FBO offices, within a few minutes we were seated and waiting for clearance and pretty soon we were airborne and headed for Jacksonville to pickup Phil, Zac and Lisa. The flight down to Jacksonville was about two hours and soon enough we were landing. Phil and the children were brought out to the plane in an SUV and Casey shepherded them aboard, they looked nervous so I approached them and offered my hand to Phil, "PJ Thorn, I'm really pleased to meet you at last, now I believe we have Zach and Lisa, but which is which, I wonder ". I saw Phil look at Casey who shrugged as if to say, 'watch and learn'. The kids laughed and Zach stepped forward, " I'm Zachary Mr Thorn but I prefer Zach, thank you for getting me out of that hospital yesterday sir, it was really boring and Pops was getting stressed, this is my sister Lisa but she's a little shy". Zac had broken the ice and we chatted whilst we got them seated and belted in ready for take off. Soon enough we were climbing out of Jacksonville and heading for Torremolinas. Ben took both of them up to the cockpit and when he brought them back they chatted non stop about what they'd seen, I hooked them up with games consoles and played a poor first game with them, from that point on we heard nothing from them except laughter and giggles. Ben, Casey, Phil and I got to chat plenty, Phil was an interesting guy who chatted easily, I asked if he and Casey had considered coming out to Lanzarotte for Christmas and his reply surprised me. "I'd like to wait and see how the kids react to this visit before we decide but Casey and I would love to be there if it turns out okay. He seemed to be about to say something but held back then he pushed on. "PJ can I ask you something ?". I nodded yes. "When you greeted the kids were you putting on a front or was it spontaneous ?, I ask because neither of them takes to strangers, ever, without exception, they normally withdraw but not with you they seemed to sense a safety which encouraged them to open up, you probably have no idea what that means to us, we've been praying for this sort of breakthrough for months now, it's a bit of a shock when it happens". I could see he was wanting to analyse their reaction but at the same time he was just pleased to see them happy, not nervous, frightened or apprehensive, just kids being kids. "I don't have to pretend when I'm around kids, any kids, I love them all, they have a quality of mischievous innocence that brings out the kid in me so I just go along with it, I can't wait for my own brood to get to the playful stage I just know we are going to have so much fun together". Casey spoke up laughing, "I told you, he's like the Pied Piper, wait till you see the reaction from Raul and Reya, according to them his farts don't smell and he walks on water". I broached the subject of Phil increasing his class size to include Reya, Raul, Analee and Anton and Phil's face lit up like a beacon. "PJ, I'm qualified in psychology which has come in handy of late, but I love teaching and the more the merrier has always been my belief, kids react better in a group, they feel safer, it also helps to build a sense of comradeship, to protect and be protected all at the same time, so yes, if we're staying, and it's looking more positive every minute, I would love to have all of them learning with me". What Phil had just said registered immediately, and I smiled. Phil was curious, "Did I say something funny ?". "Not funny but something which stirred a happy memory, Billy and I had a home room teacher our first year at school who said almost the same thing. On the first morning we were all so nervous, no scrub that, we were frightened, terrified even. He told us we all had lots in common and we could all be part of a big family while we learnt along with him. I'd never had close friends but he had us push all the desks and chairs to the back of the room, he sat us on the floor in a big circle, then he just linked us together with things that we had in common but didn't realise, Billy and I lived in the same street and our families both had hotels but we'd never met before that morning, several boys and girls whose parents worked at the same office, factory or store, several boys who loved soccer or baseball or swimming, several who liked music or art, and so on. By the time we got to first break I had friends and I had one very special friend who would be my lifelong pal, Billy Fielding. That first year of school started off as so frightening but ended up being the most wonderful of my entire school life". Along with those happy memories I remembered some sad ones as well and it must have shown on my face because Phil urged me to go on. "Apart from when my mother and grandmother died the saddest memories I have are learning that Mr Trent had terminal cancer and seeing him slip away, I was 19, just started college, Billy and I visited him every week until one day we got to his house and he was gone, he'd died in his sleep a few hours before, I felt such loss not just for me but for all mankind, to this day I still believe the world became a poorer place that day". What Phil said next shocked the shit out of me. "He would have been so proud to see you and Billy carry his coffin, to have heard you read the eulogy, telling the world what it had lost, how proud you were to have been able to learn with him. He was my uncle, Richard Trent, he inspired me to become a teacher, I was on my gap year traveling when I got the call telling me he died, I remember I went on a 2 day bender, I didn't want to think about it, I refused to acknowledge it, like you I knew the world had lost something precious. I made it home just in time to see you carry him to meet his maker and tell the world what a wonderful man he was. I never knew until now who you were". I was amazed by the coincidence that we would meet up like this, but I believe in fate and I was sure this was meant to be. Our conversation had been so interesting with Phil telling me how he studied psychology and teaching, how he and Casey met and he'd resisted Casey for over six months before finally agreeing to a date which was a disaster they didn't hit it off they argued and walked away from each other but thankfully Casey pursued him all the more vigorously and the rest is history. By now we were on final approach into Malaga and Ben gave us the belt up speech before he went up to the cockpit to supervise our landing. Ben had already told us that our flight crew today were Jimmy Rand acting as first officer and Robbie Horton taking second seat to gain hours on record. Our approach was perfect and the landing as soft as we'd ever experienced with Ben so we would have had no idea that Ben had not been at the controls had he not already told us. As was Bens tradition the two pilots donned their jackets and bade us farewell at the plane door, they would be leaving the plane here for ten days whilst it underwent it's required maintenance overhaul and I wanted this to be particularly stringent with the exterior paint touch up meticulously supervised because I had been negotiating for a new plane and our current one would be up for sale if I succeeded. It was only a matter of thirty minutes before we arrived back at our home in Torremolinas and Phil was overawed at the apartment, totally the opposite of the kids who took it all in their stride and were more interested in seeing their rooms and discovering that Casey had rigged up a games console in each. The week went fantastically with the youngsters bonding like none of us could have expected. Raul seemed to have a natural affinity for Zach and Lisa, they were damaged goods in his eyes just the same way he viewed himself and the three formed a bond that would last forever. Because Raul bonded with Zach and Lisa, so did Reya, it was a given that if Raul was happy then Reya was happy and vice versa. At the end of the week I asked Casey and Phil to meet with Lenny and me, it was an easy laid back meeting on the roof. I wanted to know their decision about moving Phil and the kids to our base in Torremolinas and Lenny wanted to know if they would be joining us for Christmas in Lanzarotte. Lenny and I were nervous because so much hung on Phil agreeing to relocate and take on the role of teacher to our ever increasing brood. We were seated on sofa's in the shade up on the roof terrace and despite having already enjoyed sandwiches and drinks, no one had tackled the big question until Casey said, "Come on PJ you must be itching to know what Phil has decided'. I agreed with him, "I am, but then again I'm almost afraid to broach the subject because if the answer were to be negative then I could see so many people missing out, and then there's the part of me that doesn't want to put any pressure on Phil, it needs to be a decision he makes because he feels it's the right one not because we want it". Lenny made everyone laugh, "Jesus PJ you really do spout some crap at times, I don't care how Phil makes his decision just so long as it's before the kids are old enough to graduate, now Phil, stop with the teasing what's your decision?". Phil was grinning, " You two crack me up you really do, it's like watching Laurel and Hardy at times". "Okay I've made my decision and it's all good, I actually came to a decision on the way out here thanks to you PJ but I was prepared to reconsider if I saw any bad signs, well there's been nothing to alter my original decision so all I will say is, you should have been careful what you wished for because you just got your wish exactly as you wanted". It only took a few seconds to register and then Lenny and I were on our feet doing the Whoop whoop dance and bumping hips. Casey and Phil were rolling around on the couch laughing when Casey said, " I told you Phil they're crazy, you'll be taking the kids as students and these two as patients in therapy". I asked If they had made any decision on accommodation and when they explained, I resolved to slaughter Pip really slowly while roasting her even more slowly on a barbecue, she had known about Phil's decision for days, she'd arranged a low cost loan from my personal funds to allow them to purchase the remaining apartment in our building and not thought to tell me anything. (In reality I would probably kiss her and thank her with an obscenely expensive present for making sure they stayed with us). Lenny was even more pleased to find out they would be spending Christmas with us as well. I'd already told Lenny that I'd passed on her invitation to Charles and Celia Hepworth and Celia would be calling her personally once they'd checked their schedules. Later that evening Celia called Lenny and admitted she'd blown off a White House function and two house parties and was so grateful to Lenny because hopefully she could have a Christmas she'd enjoy with people she loved (Celia was Lenny's paternal Aunt, sister to Lenny's father Edward) she was looking forward to a catch up with Lenny's mom and dad. She did however have a problem, their grandson Billy was supposed to be staying with them for the holidays but if we couldn't accommodate him it wasn't a problem they would catch us sometime in the New Year. Lenny quickly put her Aunt at ease and agreed Billy would be welcome and in good company. We'd already arranged for Mr and Mrs Albright (Rosemary and Albert) to come over from London for a break because they'd weathered all of the remodelling work with never a grumble, they would be arriving the day before Christmas but only on Mrs Albright's terms, she and Albert would help out Ceasar and Allis wherever needed. So far our Christmas party comprised:, Myself and Lenny with our brood of three plus three Nannies. Billy, Julia and the newest member of the Fielding family William Paul James Fielding (Will). Leo, Rosa and Reya. Ramon, Raul and Philipe. Casey, Phil, Zach and Lisa. Gramps. Edward and Esther. Charles, Celia Hepworth and Billy. Albert and Rosemary Albright. Pip. Josh and Bryan with 2 of Josh's physio staff. David Parnell and Doug. Plus two surprise guests that Lenny knew about but no one else did ?? (Don't ask, if I couldn't find out, why should you, wait and see) Ana, her daughter Analee and son Anton. Ceaser, Allis and Alma We had arranged to fly out to Lanzarotte on the 20th December with most of the party arriving later on the 23rd. As soon as we arrived Ana took up her position in the kitchen producing lengthy lists of produce she wanted delivered within the next 48 hours. Ceasar and Allis had excelled in the decorations of the house and gardens, as the sun faded Christmas lights twinkled all around us. On our first evening Ana along with the traveling staff and the limited household staff provided by Allis produced a dinner worthy of the finest European Restaurants but she was stuck in the kitchen all night and Analee and Anton ate in the kitchen to be near their mother. Following dinner I could tell that something was bugging Lenny and although I wanted to know what it was I was savvy enough to wait until she decided to open up rather than provoke an explosion. We'd been seated on the terrace outside the Great Room when Ana joined us looking decidedly tired and Lenny finally broke her silence, "PJ would you get Ana a drink please, make it a very large glass of chilled Rose". Ana and Rosa went to get up but Lenny's tone said it all, "Sit down ladies, PJ will get Ana's drink, meanwhile we are going to get something sorted". Lenny waited for me to return with Ana's drink and asked one of the nannies to take Analee and Anton down to Ana's bungalow and get them settled for bed whilst we chatted. Analee and Anton kissed everyone goodnight and left with the nanny. Lenny waited until they were out of earshot before she spoke, I knew her well enough to let her vent, "Ana the dinner you served tonight was quite possibly better than I have enjoyed in some of the finest restaurants around the world and I want to thank you so much, but, and I want you to listen to all I have to say now". Ana looked worried and nervous. Lenny went on, "When you were recruited as Chef/Cook in our traveling party it was made clear that you are responsible for catering for the dietary needs of our family party and any guests we have, but, and I want you to pay particular attention to the next thing I say because PJ and I hold this part as immensely important, it is not, and I repeat, not, your job or duty to flog yourself to death producing the goods. You, Analee and Anton are part of this family and as such we want and expect you to join the rest of the family where possible, so going forward I'm asking that you let the kitchen staff do a much greater portion of the work and ease up a little, okay?". Ana nodded, "I'm sorry Lenny, I guess I still can't believe you would give me this fantastic opportunity and I just wanted to impress you both". Lenny put her arm around Ana as her sister Allis and the rest of the family looked on, "You don't need to do anything other than be yourself, we know how good you are and how hard you're prepared to work but you have staff at your disposal for a reason, use them, we don't want you worn out, we want you to enjoy your work and enjoy a family life as well okay?, and whilst we're on the subject of help don't be surprised to find all of us girls in the kitchen on Christmas Morning helping out because there will be no kitchen staff they all get the day off so we are self sufficient that day and everyone is expected to pitch in, we just need you to direct us". Ana relaxed and nodded her head in acceptance, I think she finally realised she was part of the family. The following morning it was like a dream to wake up in our master suite. Lenny had already opened the vertical blinds which disappeared into a recess in the walls on either side of the huge windows. I found the view fascinating, not only were you looking at the sea but it seemed my eyes were being drawn upward toward the sky and the ever changing wisps of cloud, I'd never experienced that before when looking out of a window and I mentioned it to Lenny. "I don't know how you managed this, not only is the view out to sea fantastic but I seem to want to look up instead of just looking forward, it's like looking at an enormous ever changing canvas". Lenny's reply puzzled me, "Well when you figure out what it is let me know". I didn't think anymore about it but each time I entered our suite I realised I couldn't help but stand and stare at the vista. The days before Christmas flew by and we were soon welcoming the rest of our guests on Christmas Eve. Philipe, Ramon and Raul had arrived early in the day on a commercial flight from Malaga accompanied by David and Doug, they had Abbey with them, she'd been visiting for a short vacation when Lenny suggested she join us for the holidays but she appeared decidedly nervous, not something I had ever witnessed before, it was so out of character. Raul predictably made a beeline for Lenny and I for hugs as soon as he was out of the car. I watched as Lenny took Abbey aside several times and they spoke privately, whatever she said appeared to calm her down. When Gramps Jet arrived later that day one of the passengers was a complete surprise to me, it was Will and he made a beeline for Abbey who wrapped him into a big hug, okay so that was the big secret she was smitten and it appeared the feelings were mutual. On Christmas Eve, Ana organised a fantastic rolling buffet of hot and cold food which was much more fun than sitting down as a big dinner party. Having a buffet meant that we could flit from group to group catching up and hearing news from everyone, the youngsters enjoyed the attention they were getting and Lenny had arranged a selection of presents hidden around the house which they had to work together to find and so each of them was occupied during the evening and of course once those presents were found and opened we hardly saw anything of them as they gathered on the lower patio playing happily together, they'd even persuaded the nannies to bring the triplets and Will down so they could crawl around and enjoy themselves. By midnight all of the children were in bed together in two connecting rooms in our suite being supervised by the nannies. At exactly midnight Lenny called for everyone's attention and I was surprised that she had organised champagne and glasses, "I need to ask you all to stick with me for a moment because someone here needs to do something which they feel is important for their future so I'm handing over to Abbey". I was more intrigued than surprised, I had no idea what was going on but a very nervous Abbey who had been sitting next to Will stood and looking around said, "I apologise for interrupting your evening but I have something to do which to be honest is frightening the crap out of me because I don't know what the outcome will be but I only have a week left of the year where by tradition I can do it and I'm hopeful it will make this the best Christmas I ever had". Turning to Bryan she smiled, "Thanks boss for having faith in me you almost made me the happiest girl on the planet but there's just one thing missing". Bryan looked puzzled until she turned towards Will and dropped to one knee, " I know we discussed this and I'm sorry I can't stick to the plan, you have to know, I can't wait, it's a leap year and I need you, Will, I love you so much, will you marry me?". The gasps around the patio were audible and then there was a collective holding of breath as everyone waited for Will to answer. He leaned down looking straight into her eyes, "Oh yes, you bet your cute little ass I will". And then they were kissing and a collective round of applause came from everyone. I hugged Lenny, "You knew about this?". Lenny smiled, "Of course I did, I helped set it up, she's been a bag of nerves all day, she was terrified he would refuse her, I've spent most of the day keeping her calm". We drank champagne and toasted the happy couple until I reminded Bryan he would probably lose Abbey as a CEO if they decided to start a family but he took it in his stride, "We'll cross that bridge if and when we get to it". We both laughed. Christmas morning when I went into the kitchen I was surprised to see just about everyone chipping in with Ana directing like the conductor of an orchestra, I was sent to lay up the table on the patio and I recruited all of the older children to help. The atmosphere once breakfast was prepared was fantastic with good natured ribbing from Ana on the lack of general kitchen experience some of our party displayed, the best example being Lenny's aunt Celia who couldn't figure out why the toaster wasn't working until Ana plugged it in for her, this had everyone including Celia in stitches. Lunch was a repeat of breakfast with everyone chipping in to help prepare, but for our evening buffet Lenny banned Ana from the kitchen, she was sent out to relax on the patio and enjoy the company of the children who were rehearsing a Christmas concert they had drummed up together and which proved to be hilarious when they performed it for us later that evening. The buffet that night was a little unusual and basic but enjoyable nonetheless and Christmas Day would be for years to come the day we all mucked in and looked after ourselves. Our family had grown tremendously and would continue to grow together in the years to come. On Boxing Day which was a Sunday we had invited the families of Ceaser, Allis and Anna, including the family of Anna's late husband to join us for family day and it was a wonderful day. Every guest brought food and with what Anna, Allis and Mrs Albright had prepared we could have fed half of the island. Lenny had asked Ceaser to arrange musicians for the afternoon and evening to play on the terrace and a group of entertainers to amuse the children. As everyone arrived at different times Ceaser, Allis or Anna would bring them first to meet Lenny and I and then introduce them around the rest of the guests. Mid afternoon Lenny spotted a group of older people sitting on the lower terrace watching the children play with the entertainers, they didn't have any drinks and looked really uncomfortable. Calling Allis and Ana over she apologised that she couldn't remember all of the people they'd introduced and pointing down to the lower terrace asked who they were. The girls explained they were Allis and Ana's parents along with Ana's late husbands parents and Ceaser's parents, they went on to say they were simple working folk and were probably a little in awe of the house and surroundings. I saw Lenny smile and I knew immediately she had a project for us. Lenny Asked Ana and Allis to put together a selection of snacks and nibbles their relatives would enjoy and also what drinks they would normally have. Once that was done Lenny pulled me aside and asked me to try to get Raul, Reya, Billy, Zach, Lisa, Analee, Anton and Alma to help her. I called the gang to one side, " I need your help guys if you think you could do it, we have a group of really nice older people who are a bit nervous about helping themselves to food and drinks because they're not used to being here, so Lenny and I want to help them relax, we thought we could serve them their first food and drinks, do you think you could help us do that?" I could see Phil watching me and shaking his head in wonder as the group collectively agreed with "Yeh, sure, 'kay, Yep", all variations on a positive response but in the language of cool kids. We took the food and drinks on a trolley along with side plates and napkins down in the elevator to the lower terrace and had the kids approach the group first, handing out plates and napkins. Lenny and I followed up with the food and drinks and Lenny broke the ice, "We are so pleased that you would come and spend your day with us and I hope you won't be offended but to save you having to go upstairs and collect what you want we thought we could bring you a selection to start you off, now Ana and Allis told us these drinks should fit perfectly so who likes red wine?". All three ladies raised their hands and accepted the drinks carried to them by the kids. "Okay so that must mean you guys are all happy with beers". Raul, Zach and Billy each carried a beer to one of the men. Without being prompted Reya, Alma, Analee and Lisa picked up platters from the trolley and offered them first to the ladies and then moved on to the gentlemen, Zack, Raul, Anton and Billy followed suit with the other platters whilst Lenny and I sat chatting amongst them, within a matter of minutes everyone was relaxed, eating, drinking and chatting away as though they'd known us all their lives. One of the gentlemen leaned over to his wife and whispered something, his wife beckoned Lenny closer and asked if the men could give a gift to the children to thank them for serving them. I could see Lenny considering her answer then heard her say, "I think if your husbands want to do that it would be very kind of them but I would ask that the value is kept low, I don't want the children's parents to think they are being spoiled". The woman smiled and related the reply to her husband who went into a huddle with the other men before removing eight ten Euro notes from his wallet. He beckoned Raul over and gave him the eight notes saying, " one each of these notes to each of you as a thank you for your kindness and a celebration of the season of goodwill, but as family tradition requires I would ask that you first check with your parents that it's alright for you to accept this gift". Raul bless him, nodded and said, "Thank you sir but there is no need to give us this, we wanted you to be happy and enjoy Uncle PJ and Aunt Lenny's house as much as we do". The man who I now knew was Alma, Anton and Analee's grandfather nodded and said, " And because you were so thoughtful we will enjoy our day so take the gift and make us old folks happy". Raul handed out a note to each of his friends and as a group they scampered of to find their parents and in Billy's case his grandmother, before they disappeared I told them all to say I'd approved the gift, they all grinned knowing I had just guaranteed they would be able to keep the gift. A few minutes later Raul came up to me and asked if I knew where his Popa was, he'd looked everywhere and couldn't find him. I told him he would be here somewhere but how about I be a stand in until he turned up and I scooped him up into my arms. If I hadn't been scooping him into a hug at that point he would have seen what I saw, a decidedly ruffled Ramon sneaking out of the third bungalow on the left and the smile on his face said it all. I searched my memory but for the life of me I couldn't remember who was in that bungalow. I made a mental note to ask Lenny. The days between Christmas and New Year were our usual leisurely days, people watching on the promenade, shopping for the girls, beers in the promenade cafe for us guys while the girls shopped, and a day at the local water park where the kids wore themselves out completely. On our day at the water park I saw the most unusual thing I think I've ever witnessed, I called Lenny over and we stood arm in arm, fascinated, watching the kids on the water slide. Far from being creeped out or morbidly fascinated by Raul's false leg, when it was Raul's turn on the water slide one of the children would steady him whilst he unstrapped the leg, another took the leg whilst the first one helped him into position on the slide, then whoever was holding the false leg would scamper down the steps with it ready to meet up with the remaining kids at the bottom of the slide and between them they would get Raul reassembled, it was like a well orchestrated opera and to them a natural thing to do. Phil who was chatting with Ramon picked up on my fascinated expression and said, "It's called innocence PJ, to them it's nothing unusual, it's not unnatural, it's just what you do so your friend can enjoy the slide same as you, it's no different to holding someone's coat while they enjoy a ride at the fairground, if only we could protect that innocence throughout their lives". He sighed. Seeing Ramon reminded me of seeing him coming out of the bungalow and I asked Lenny if she knew who was using that bungalow but her reply surprised me, apparently it was empty so I was no nearer to finding out what Ramon had been up to, or with whom. New Years Eve we joined Ana and Allis's family at our favourite cafe on the promenade for a sing along and Karaoke before the firework celebrations on the beach at midnight. Casey was having kittens that we were so vulnerable and exposed but he agreed if we left the triplets at home under guard while the extra security he had drafted in mingled with our party. It proved to be a wonderful evening and we all tottered home, more than a little tipsy at around two in the morning. On New Years Day Billy and Julia surprised us with invitations to their wedding on February 14th Valentines Day in New York. They handed invitations to everyone including Ana, Allis and Ceaser as well as Mr and Mrs Albright, they were blown away and looked at Lenny as if wanting permission to accept but as expected she just shrugged and laughing said, "One of these days you guys are going to accept we are all family so get your acceptance replies mailed". They were planning to have the reception at SPECTRUM at the Fielding New York, just one problem, it was still under construction and not due for completion until late February. We'd delayed starting the construction until 2nd January so as not to impact the Christmas and New Years trade. Lenny looked at the invitation and immediately saw the conflict. "Oh shit PJ, I'm going to need to go back to New York as soon as possible, I think I may need to grease some wheels", she was absolutely panicked. I was laughing, and Lenny wasn't amused. "What the hell are you laughing at?". I couldn't help it, " Super cool Lenny in meltdown it's a first", and I carried on laughing. Lenny was trying to be indignant, "It won't be funny when the bride walks in wearing a bloody hard hat and work boots instead of a veil and stilettos", but even she dissolved into laughter at that thought and no one could understand what we were laughing at which caused us to laugh even more. When we'd finally got ourselves under control and I'd pulled her into a hug she said, "Thanks PJ, you manage it every time, everyone else runs when I'm about to explode, you just take it in your stride and bring me back to earth, I do love you". It was an easy reply, "Ah but I'm only able to do it because I love you too, even if you do terrify the shit out of me most days". And that was it we both dissolved into hysterics again much to the amazement of the rest of the party. Casey could be heard laughing and saying to Phil, "Don't look so surprised I told you they would end up as your patients". We agreed to travel to New York on 5th January and over lunch I told everyone our plans, they were all okay with getting back to normal with one exception. I caught a muttered "Shit", from Ramon who looked as though his world had been crushed. Lenny had caught it to, we looked at each other with a, 'do you know what that's all about?' but we each shrugged our shoulders, then I glanced at Pip who was sitting next to Ramon and she looked as dejected as Ramon, bells started ringing in my head, they'd been together almost every time I'd seen them all holiday. And more importantly, when one was missing so was the other. I nudged Lenny and nodded towards Pip, she frowned then smiled and obviously came to the same conclusion I had. Lenny leaned in and whispered, "Play along". "That doesn't work PJ, can we make it the 6th", she said and we both watched as Ramon and Pip perked up. "Sorry Lenny I've arranged meetings which are important, you can stay a few extra days but I need to go and I need Pip with me". Pip almost shouted, "Why for Christ sake it's only 1 day". Now normally her answer wouldn't have been unusual but she'd almost shouted it and everyone at the table stopped what they were doing and stared at her, including Ramon who was slowly heading for a panic attack judging by the way he was drumming his fingers on the table. I looked at Ramon and said, "I suppose I could delay if someone were to give me a good enough reason", I was staring directly at him and smiling. Ramon spoke up, "PJ sometimes you are naughty, you know as well as I do that the 5th is Pips birthday and we were planning to go out for a birthday dinner". He had worded it rather vaguely and it sounded like a big birthday dinner but I was guessing different. "And this dinner would it be for more than 2 people?". He looked at Pip who just smiled. "No", was all he said. Lenny nudged me and indicated I look below the table and I saw they were holding hands, I knew instinctively I'd taken this far enough. "Okay, looks like we're traveling back on the 6th folks". Mid afternoon Gramps sat with Lenny and I on the terrace and the conversation was to say the least strange, he was in a mood to reminisce and we laughed and laughed as he told Lenny some of the things I'd got up to with Billy and Julia as we grew up, things he'd kept hidden from my father who seemed to relish any excuse to scold me. His mood was melancholy and it made me more determined that we needed to spend more time with him, I put it down to him feeling excluded because we'd made it plain we wouldn't be moving back to the States, I told him he should come out to us more regularly, I never wanted him to feel lonely, I loved him too much to allow that but his reply confused both of us. "It's not something that matters anymore, I love you both, remember that and now I'll leave you to have some alone time". As he walked away we were left wondering what that had really been about. A little later Pip caught up with Lenny and I on the terrace where Gramps had left us, we were snuggled together on a sofa. Looking between both of us she said, "One of these days I swear I will swing for both of you", and then she laughed, "It's taken him nearly 2 months to get up the courage to ask me out on a date in public and you start messing with his head". I had to ask, "Is it serious?". She sighed, "PJ sometimes you can be so blinkered, for months now we've all but made out on the desk in front of you, yes it's serious, when we go off in different directions I'm frantic, on edge, I can't wait to see them again". I picked up that she'd just included Raul in the relationship and one look at Lenny confirmed that sealed it for us, we'd do all we could to help this relationship along. Lenny spoke then, "Okay tomorrow we'll have a birthday barbecue around 3pm so you will still be hungry for dinner, we'll arrange for an entertainer for the kids for the evening then Raul won't be too bothered about you two being missing, but I want a blow by blow account as soon as you get back". Pip stood and smiling as she walked away said, "I never said I was going to blow him, but you never know, it wouldn't be a first". Lenny and I just cracked up laughing.
