"What do you mean you've been trying to get a hold of me. Did you even think of paging me?" I was pissed! I reached down to look at my pager only to find that the battery was dead. I slapped my forehead and thought to myself…IDIOT!

"What do you mean…I've been paging you since 4pm! Not only that, but do you know how embarrassing it is to have to explain why you ran out of the house when you saw her there!"

"What the hell is she doing there? Did you need a shoulder to cry on?" I said sarcastically.

"John!" She glanced over to where her sister who was sitting at the table hoping that she wasn't listening. She was talking to Con and Ryan and moved into the living room to get out of ears reach.

" I can't believe you Paula!"

"John, shut up for a second! My sister is here to stay with the boys so we can fly to Iowa. You ran out of the house before I could even explain why she's here! Now get over here and pick me up!"

"Oh…OK, I'm on my way!" I said sheepishly.

"Hi Aunt Margaret!"

"Hi Conrad! How's my favorite nephew?"

"Great! Ryan and I are going cross country skiing!"

"Hey, that sounds like fun! Guess what?"

"What?"

"How would you like to have your Aunt Margaret and cousin Jonathan stay with you for a few days?"

Trying not to sound disappointed. "Hey, that would be great!" Damn, so much for having time alone with Ryan! I never really liked Jonathan. He's an only child who thinks he's way too cool for me.

"Before you leave, I think your mom needs to tell you something. So what have you been up to lately?"

Paula

I went back into the kitchen to see Margaret still talking to the boys.

They turned to look at me as I entered the kitchen. "Con, I'm afraid that I have some bad news. Your Grandpa Devon is ill and is in the hospital. Your father and I are flying to Sioux City. While we're gone Margaret and Jonathan will be staying with you until we return. I want you both to be on your best behavior. OK?"

"Yes mom! What's wrong with him?"

"I don't know I can't get in touch with your Grandma. She only said that he's on his way to the hospital in an ambulance. I'll let you know as soon as I find out what's wrong. OK?"

"OK mom."

Paula had just finished packing when she heard John walk in.

"Hi Margaret, how are you?"

John

I looked over to see Paula standing in the foyer with her hands on her hips…not looking very pleased with me.

"Hi honey!" I said in my best suck-up husbandly voice.

She rolled her eyes at me and said. "John, I have our luggage packed and I've made the arrangements to charter a Mooney Bravo. They said it will be gassed up and ready to go. Go take a quick shower and get into something more comfortable. I'll be flying us there so you can sleep on the way."

"Sounds like you've got everything planned." I said feeling puny and with half a smile I ran to take a shower but not before Paule gave me a big slap on my bum as I ran by her.

"OUCH!"

"Get your butt in gear! We have a plane to catch!" Paula said in stern voice.

Paula was quiet and we didn't talk much on the way to Austin Straubel Airport. We both did the preflight check. We obtained clearance from the tower and we were on our way cruising at 8,000 feet. It was a cold clear night. There was no moon and so the stars were brilliant. I looked out the window and slowly drifted off to sleep. Paula and I both love to fly and it's something we truly enjoyed doing together.

"Wake up sleepy head. We're on final approach."

"Roger tower, we are cleared to land." Paula said as she lowered the landing gear.

"We're here already?"

"Yes, you've been out like a light! Make yourself useful and lower the flaps to 30 degrees. We have a 15-knot crosswind. This landing is going to be a bit of a challenge."

"Yes sir! I mean mam!" Smiling at her as she glanced over at me and shook her head.

"Jeez, that landing was a little rough!" I said with a whine as we bounced a couple of times down the runway.

"Yeah well…if you can do better…"

We taxied to the hanger shut the bird down. Paula drove us to the hospital as I gave her directions. Paula was still giving me the quiet treatment. I have to admit I was a wee bit afraid of her, so I didn't say much either. She just kept driving and concentrated on the road.

We entered the hospital and asked the receptionist for Dr. Devon's room number.

The receptionist replied. "I'm sorry sir, but there is no Dr. Devon here."

Trying not to panic. "Not here! I wonder if he's at the other hospital?"

Noticing my panic stricken face she asked. "May I ask who you are sir?"

"Yes. I'm his son!"

"Oh, I'm sorry, he's in room 301. We have been told not to let people know that he's in the hospital. Your father is very well known here."

"Oh, oh thank you!" I said and sighed in relief.

We arrived on the third floor and started walking to room 301. At the end of the hall I could see mom standing alone. As usual she was reading a book.

"Find something interesting to read?" I said.

She looked up and ran over to me. "Johnny! I’m so glad you're here!" She gave me a big hug and began to weep.

"How's dad?"

Wiping the tears from her cheeks she pulled away and said. "It took them forever to decide if he was having a heart attack. They said something about him having a left bundle block and that there wasn't a clear picture of what was causing his pain. But he kept having so much pain that they decided to finally take him to the cath lab. I haven't heard anything for almost an hour. I'm getting worried."

"Start from the beginning. Tell me what happened at home."

"Well we just finished eating some ice cream when he started to complain of chest pain and nausea. The pain must have been pretty bad because he told me to call an ambulance. You know how hard headed he can be about seeing a doctor."

"Yeah, doctors make the worst patients." I said chuckling.

"Oh, I'm sorry…Hi Paula! It's so good to see you again! You look so lovely dear." As she gave her a hug."

"Hi Jill! How are you holding up?"

"I'm so worried! He was in so much pain and I haven't heard anything."

"Mom try to relax. Let's go to the cafeteria and get some coffee."

"OK dear."

We told the nurse where were going wait and after getting our coffee we sat down. I looked at mom and it was then that I realized that she was getting old and frail looking. But her eyes still had fire in them. "Mom, I'm sure dad will be fine."

"I hope so, I know he's got a good doctor. You might remember him. His name is Miky?"

My jaw dropped open when she said that. "I thought he was practicing in Boston?"

"He did for about 10 years and then moved back to Sioux City 5 or 6 years ago. That boy still hasn't married yet. I can't believe some nice girl hasn't snatched him by now. He's such a good-looking young man!

"Well mom, he's not young anymore. He's 41."

"Well when you get to be my age, 41 IS young!" Looking at me with a concerned look on her face she went on to say. "Johnny, he's always asking about you and your family. You two were so close. You were like brothers."

I could feel Paula gazing at me and I imagined my face was beginning to flush and get red hot.

Clearing her voice. "I'm going to go get us some more coffee." Paula got up and walked away.

"Johnny, Paula looks great, but she looks a little preoccupied or miffed about something?"

"Mom, I sort of made her angry on the way here, it has nothing to do with coming here. In fact it was because of her diligence that we were able to get here so quickly."

"Well, I'm sure you two will sort things out, you make such a lovely couple?"

"You, know mom…I'm not the easiest person to get along with!"

"Yes, you are a lot like your father. He can be difficult, but for the most part he's a wonderful man and I'd be lost without him. No one is perfect. We're all human. To err is human."

"Isn't that a name of a book?" I said smiling.

"You should visit us more often Johnny. We miss you and your family! Miky misses you too!"

"Mom…you know that you and dad are always welcome to visit. I'm so darn busy with work that I can hardly keep up. I feel like my life is racing before me and before I know it…it'll be over!" I looked down at the coffee that was getting cold.

"Johnny, you have a lot of living to do…"

"Hey…who do we have here!" A familiar voice said behind me. Mom's eyes lit up as she looked over my shoulder. I turned to see who it was.

"Johnny!"

It was Michael wearing green scrubs and a surgical cap looking very doctorly and of course…GREAT! I got up from my chair and held out my hand to shake his. He grabbed my hand and proceeded to pull me in for a hug.

"You don't think you're getting away with just a hand shake!" He said laughing and looking at me with his brilliant blue eyes.

To say the least, I was a little overwhelmed and as we hugged I could see Paula over Michael's shoulder walking towards us with coffee. She stopped momentarily but mom said. "Paula, come meet Miky! Miky this is Johnny's wife, Paula."

"Yes, I believe we've met once when I was visiting Johnny at the University of Iowa."

"Oh, yes I remember you! Care for a cup of coffee?" Paula asked.

"Thanks, I need a little pick-me-up." As he took the cup from her.

Mom looked at Michael. "Miky, how's John Sr.?"

"He's going to be fine. His hearts in good shape! It's probably cholelithiasis." Michael said with a smile on his face.

"Gall stones, mom." As I turned to her.

"We'll do an ultrasound of his gallbladder later today or tomorrow." Michael said as he took a sip of his coffee.

"What a relief!" As she smiled at Miky. "I knew you could help my John!"

"Well I haven't done much to help him yet, but we are getting closer to figuring out what is ailing him. I'm going to refer him to a good friend of mine who is an internist. She'll take good care John Sr."

"Someone we should know about?" Mom said with a smile on her face.

"No Jill, just a very good friend."

"OK Miky." Smiling slyly and giving him a wink.

"So Johnny, when can we get together for drink. We have a lot to catch up on?"

I looked at him and then at Paula and said. "Miky, I have to get back as soon as possible. My practice is huge and I'm drowning in work. Paula has a pharmacy to take care of and a neighbor boy is staying with us while his parents…."

"And you have to get home." Michael said looking disappointed.

"I understand. Well, maybe another time." He said. Just then his pager went off. He looked at it and sounding very sad said. "I have to start my next case."

"John, it was great seeing you again! Give me a call some time. I'd like to catch up on what you've been up to for the past 16 years. You never seem to get home. Don't be such a stranger! We all miss you!" With a pleading tone in his voice.

I couldn't look at him. I felt a little choked up, but I was able to fight it off and force a smile. "It was great seeing you again Michael! I'll give ya call some time."

He gave me another hug and turned to Paula and said. "Keep him out of trouble!"

She smiled and said in a cool, patronizing sort of way. "You know keeping JOHNNY out of trouble is nearly impossible." I looked at her surprised because she's never called me Johnny before.

"Yeah I remember!" As he smiled and walked off.

Fighting the urge to bolt, I turned around to see what mom was doing and noticed a tear in her eye. She sighed, then smiled at me and said. "Well…that was good news!" But I couldn't tell if that was a look of joy, sadness or maybe…both?

Con

It was a beautiful day for cross-country skiing. Jonathan would be coming later this morning so we thought we get out early. The sun was shining through the trees and reflected brightly off of the freshly fallen snow. There was no wind and the silence was broken only by a symphony of birds singing at the top of their lungs.

"Damnit!"

"What's the matter?" I said watching Ryan struggle with his ski bindings.

"I've got ice on my bindings!" Whining. I could see the frustration in his face and that his nose was running. God even that's cute! I wanted to go up and wipe his nose for him. What the heck am I thinking! Damn, the next thing I'll want to do is wipe his butt for him! NOT!

I skied up next to him. "Give me one of your skis. Here, have a Kleenex. You need one."

"What? Oh!" As he took it from me.

"I could just kick your ass for not cleaning the snow off of your skis!"

"Yeah, and who's army!"

"Here's your ski. Now get your butt moving. Last one to the ravine is a cock sucker!" As I took off without him.

In no time at all he was right behind me. Ryan is a better skier than I am, so I needed a head start. We were head to head for a while as I was trying my hardest to keep up. But he pulled out in front and I gradually fell further and further behind. I watched him go down suicide hill. Suicide hill is a hill that is very steep and narrow with trees on either side. I watched him maneuver down the hill without any difficulty. It was my turn and I headed down at break neck speed. Just as I got the bottom of the hill, clumsy me fell and somehow avoided all of the trees landing in some thickets. I decided to play like I had gotten hurt so that Ryan would turn back. That way he wouldn't get so far ahead of me. Sure enough, Ryan came back, but I didn't expect him to respond the way he did.

"Con, Con, Con!"

I didn't answer and kept my eyes closed. He grabbed my jacket and started shaking me. It wasn't until I heard him get panicky that I started to giggle and opened my eyes only to see the panic in his eyes with tears streaming down his cheeks. I immediately quit my giggling and started feeling like shit. He turned away from me sitting in the snow not saying anything.

"Ryan I'm sorry! That was a dirty joke I played on ya! I’m sorry buddy!" After I struggled a bit to get out the thickets, I knelt next to him placing my hand on his shoulder. "I'm really sorry for doing that!"

He turned his head to me and said. "You really scared me! People get hurt on this hill every year!"

"I'm sorry buddy! I didn't mean to upset you!"

"Well, we'll see who gets the last laugh!' As he jumped to his feet and put his skis back on. I scrambled for my skis and we were off. I finally made my way around the last corner to the ravine. Holy shit! Ryan was standing by the ravine with his ski vest off with his back to me. I could see the steam rising off of his naked skin. As I got closer I notice that he had his ski pants pulled down over his hips and his cheeks and crack were partially visible. He had his dick whipped out and was taking a leak.

"Hey, I'm ready for ya Con! I thought you'd never get here man!" He yelled as he turned to face me and shook his dick at me.

I continued to approach him with a sly grin on my face looking at his one eyed monster and licking my lips. I looked at his face and noticed that his big grin was slowly fading. I peered into his blue eyes and then looked back down at his cock and I could see it getting bigger.

I peered back into his eyes and said. "I think he likes me."

There was a faint yelling behind us. Someone was heading our way but I continued to focus on Ryan and smiled at him as he quickly pulled his ski pants up and adjusted his package. I kept staring at his face with a knowing grin on my face until I heard Aunt Margaret say. "There you boys are!" I turned to see Aunt Margaret and her spoiled rotten son, Jonathan.

"I forgot how hard this trail is." Margaret said as they made there way closer to our location along the ravine.

I turned back to Ryan and looked down at his crotch to see that he was still a bit aroused. He saw me looking and adjusted himself in a self-conscious way. I smiled at him evilly and said. "That's not the only thing that's hard around here." As I winked at Ryan. Ryan's eyes got big as he wrinkled his forehead and whispered. "Shut the fuck up!"

"Yeah it's definitely hard!" I yelled, looking at Ryan and then turning to see Margaret and Jonathan slowly making their way to our location.
