MARTIN ROBERTS INVESTIGATES THE GREYMOUNT COLLEGE MURDERS Chapter 11 The information that a decision had been taken to reconstruct the events leading up to the murder of Paul Ferris had spread around the College community like wildfire. "I still don't see why we can't take part in the reconstruction, Bobby", Peter Fowler complained to his new sexual partner when he heard the news. "Like I've told you, Peter, that sexy Sergeant Rickwood says that they are afraid we might be traumatised all over again and in any case we might remember more if we look on from the outside rather than take part." "Well, I suppose that's right but I really do want to help." "I know you do and so do I but I think if that's what the Police want, we should abide by their decision. Now are we going to the score box or not?" Peter nodded enthusiastically at Bobby's last suggestion and the two boys separated and went by different routes to their intended destination. There were quite a few other students out and about enjoying the late afternoon sunshine, but they each arrived safely and got quickly inside the score box and locked the door. The two teenagers were aware that they would have to be quiet but peter was more than ready to start once they were hidden from view. The younger boy reached for his friend's trousers and slowly unzipped them and was delighted to discover that Bobby was wearing no underwear. Peter's hand immediately came into contact with the growing tumescence of Bobby's shaft and he eagerly fished it out into full view. The horny youngster began to use his tongue and lips to ease back the older teen's foreskin, leaving Bobby free to remove his own shirt. Peter swallowed the now sensitive and exposed head between his lips and pulled Bobby's trousers down to his ankles, thus giving himself full control over his friend's cock, balls and arse cheeks. Peter was beginning to realise that he took more pleasure from sucking other people's dicks than he did in having his own played with, but Bobby insisted that the younger teen remove his clothes as well. Peter did so as quickly as he could and then resumed his oral attention to Bobby's now rampant dick. The younger teen also used his hands to explore Bobby's balls and trace the line towards his puckered arse hole. The older boy widened his legs to allow his horny partner better access and gasped with delight as the first finger made contact with and then passed through his arse hole. Peter had never tried this before but had read about it somewhere and either through luck or good judgement made immediate contact with Bobby's prostate. The older teenager's dick bucked and throbbed in Peter's mouth as he sucked up and down the shaft and his fingers teased the prostate gland. Bobby was reduced to merely groaning and pushing his hands onto his partner's bobbing head as he thrust up to meet the downward motion of the sucking lips and tongue. Unable to control himself for very long due to the intensity of the feelings that Peter was generating in him, Bobby allowed his orgasm overtake him and he began to fire a stream of hot spunk straight into the randy younger teen's greedy mouth. Peter looked up with smiling eyes as he drank down every drop of the older teen's ball juice and refused to let go of the dick he was sucking until it had softened and become too sensitive to remain in such intimate contact. For several moments Bobby leaned against the thin wall of the score box recovering his composure and Peter stood in front of him gently wanking his cock, exposing and covering the sensitive head with his foreskin with rhythmical strokes. When he was sufficiently recovered, Bobby stopped Peter and knelt down in front of his young friend and took the pre-cum-covered head of the younger teen's dick between his lips and began to lick the piss slit. With a gasp of sheer delight, Peter unleashed his own pent up orgasm and Bobby also swallowed every last drop before allowing the cock to slip out of the grip of his lips. Peter noticed that Bobby's cock was beginning to show signs of renewed vigour and he would have liked to have had a second round of sexual activity but Bobby stopped him and whispered, "Not tonight Bobby. Too many people about and we need to get back for supper, But I'll tell you this, for your age and experience you are a great little sucker. Thanks for giving me so much pleasure!!" Peter smiled and whispered in reply, "Your cock is so beautiful to suck I'd be happy to do it anytime you want and thanks for sucking mine, I don't expect that treatment in return every time!!" Bobby grinned back and the two boys quickly tidied themselves up and then the older teen tentatively opened the door of the score box. As he did so, Andy Stephens and his girlfriend, Anna Young, were passing along the path right by the score box and clearly saw Bobby. Andy looked across at the student and said, "What the hell are you doing in the score box, not smoking I hope?" "No, of course not, sir." "So who's that in there with you?" "Me, sir", said Peter Fowler appearing in the door with a large score book in his hand, "I was showing Bobby some records he was interested in. I used to do the same for Paul when he was captain. It's for the game on Saturday against Halton Manor, sir." "Records? What records?" Andy asked incredulously. "We always looked up the players from last year and checked how they were out. Last year's scorer wrote details of each dismissal. It helped us plan for the game." "OK, but you better both get back to your dorms it's almost time for supper and Bobby, get them started if I'm not there at the start of the meal." "Will do, sir. Come on Peter I'll go back to Marston House with you and then on to my own dorm. See you later, sir." Much relieved the two boys walked hurriedly back towards the dormitories and Bobby said when they were out of earshot of the teacher and his girlfriend, "Wow, thanks for that!! Bloody quick thinking. I think we got away with it but it sows how careful we must be in future." Peter acknowledged the thanks from his older friend and indicated that he agreed that they needed to take more care in future. Meanwhile, Martin had arrived home much earlier than expected, an event that caused great joy to Harry and Simon but rather more a cause of apprehension for Tom who quickly realised that his partner's day had not gone as well as might have been hoped. To everyone's surprise, Martin agreed that he would honour his earlier promise and take the young boys swimming and so, after only a few brief moments alone with Tom, the four of them made the short journey to the nearby Leisure Centre. Harry and Simon were quickly changed and ready and waited rather impatiently for Tom and Martin to join them. Once they were all together they made their way to the swimming area. There were three pools, one for diving, which Martin wished to avoid at all costs; a second for regular swimming which was acceptable and a third, beginners', pool which was much more to the Superintendent's taste. The two young boys scurried to the beginners' pool and jumped in and Martin followed them more gingerly. The water was very warm and not too deep and Martin could easily sit on the floor of the pool and relax without any danger of being swamped. Tom had watched for a few moments and then said he would do a `quick couple of lengths' of the main pool and then rejoin them and Martin had smiled his acceptance. Simon and Harry enjoyed the fun of splashing around in the water and trying to catch Martin unawares by creeping up behind him or swimming up close and splashing him. In retaliation Martin would attempt to catch one of the boys and throw them over his shoulder into the water causing a great deal of hilarity for all concerned. The fun and games in the beginners' pool was a source of both enjoyment and relaxation for Martin but after a while he asked the youngsters to give him a short break and Harry and Simon although disappointed did as they were asked. However the boys did not remain obedient for long and managed to creep up on Martin almost unseen and with one boy grabbing one leg and the other the second they pulled the older man under the water. Martin struggled to free himself from the grip of the two small boys and break the surface to breathe but found it very difficult. Tom was coming back and came to his partner's rescue by forcing the young boys to release their grip and thus allow Martin to get his head above the water line. Coughing and spluttering, Martin regained the surface and Tom told the two boys very firmly that what they had done was potentially very dangerous and they had to learn when to stop and let go. The two young boys looked truly sorry and hugged Martin to show that they had intended no harm and that their game had got out of hand. Martin hugged them back and said that he knew that they had not intended to harm him but it just showed how dangerous water could be. Tom suggested that they all move to the main pool and have a brief swim there before going to get changed. Martin agreed and Tom led the two boys in the direction of the main pool with Martin, still slightly shaken by his recent experience following on slowly behind. The rest of the visit to the Leisure Centre went without a hitch. After about ten minutes in the main pool the younger boys found that it was too crowded and wanted to either return to the smaller beginners' pool or go and get changed. Tom decided that the time was right to get ready to go back home and so they all four made their way back to the showers and changing rooms. When they were all dressed, Martin suggested that they go to the local fast food restaurant and had something to eat and drink. This was a suggestion that was greeted with enthusiasm by the two younger boys. The party lingered a short while eating their food before returning to their home where Martin and Tom told Harry and Simon that it was now getting late and that they should start getting ready for bed. When the boys were safely in bed, Martin turned to Tom and said, "I learnt something this evening, Tom. Just how easy it is and how little strength is needed to pull someone under the water and keep them there." Tom agreed and added, "Does that mean you have to re-think the case? I assume that as you were home early, it isn't over yet." Martin told Tom about the events of the day and his decision to stage a reconstruction the following day and them added, "As for your first question, I suppose it does. I'm pretty certain the killer was an adult but what harry and Simon showed me today was that it could have been one of the students who could have killed Paul Ferris. If Paul had been lying relaxed in the bath it would not have taken much strength to pull him under the water and keep him there. And another thing is that if it wasn't astudent it could have been a woman. I think part of tomorrow's exercise will have to concentrate on where Lizzie Scott-Brown was during these events, don't you?" Tom wanted to say something else but decided against it and instead suggested that they have a drink and go to bed. Martin readily agreed to this but also indicated that he was not in the mood for anything more than cuddling and companionship. Tom was slightly disappointed by this but knew that his partner was greatly troubled by the lack of progress in solving the case and would need his wits about him the next day if he was going to make a breakthrough. Although he really wanted to sleep, it took Martin a very long time to get his mind to stop turning over thoughts and ideas. Tom, as usual, had fallen asleep almost immediately and Martin spent some time watching his partner as his body moved rhythmically in time with his regular breathing. When he finally dropped off Martin slept fitfully until the early hours and seemed only just to have got into a relaxing sleep when he was startled by the arrival of Simon and Harry on their usual morning invasion. Tom took over the care of the boys to allow Martin some time to come round and then get washed and dressed. Martin's lover also took the time to explain to Simon and Harry that Martin would have to leave early that day as he had a lot of work to do in connection with the case he was investigating. The youngsters understood and promised not to make a nuisance of themselves by attempting to get in the shower with him as they often did. Led by Harry, Simon went off back to their room where they lay in bed quietly until Tom appeared and asked if they wanted to help make the breakfast. The two boys accepted the suggestion eagerly and were soon making themselves useful in the kitchen. When Martin arrived dressed for the day everything was in place and he thanked Tom and the boys for being so good and making such a good meal. Martin ate hurriedly and then kissed the boys and Tom before leaving to start his busy day. Martin had begun the day by telephoning Mark and Mike and asking them to meet him to discuss various aspects of the reconstruction which he had decided would begin after lunch. This would give time for the necessary preparations to be made and for the three senior investigators to decide at what point they wished the reconstruction to begin. Meeting in the incident room, Martin asked Mike and Mark for their views. Martin began the discussion by asking Mike a question, "Mike, you were on the field for the game so can you say when you think the reconstruction of events should start?' "Well, sir, my initial reaction was that it should start from the dismissal of Paul Ferris, but I wondered about that. What if the killer was already in the pavilion before he was dismissed?" "Good point, Mike. Do you mean you think the killer pre-meditated this killing and was determined to do it at that game or was it merely an opportunistic murder? Mark, what's your take on this?" "I think Mike has a point and I'd like to go back a bit. Is there something that might have been a distraction that could have enabled someone to slip into the pavilion unnoticed?" Mike Rickwood looked up again and added another point, "We were distracted on the field when that student arrived in the wheelchair. There was a lot of cheering and clapping. If we momentarily lost concentration on the game, might not the spectators? If so, it would have allowed someone to slip into the pavilion unnoticed." Martin looked pleased with what he's heard and summed up the discussion, "I think we'll go from the point just before the arrival of the student in the wheelchair. Also, before we start I'd like you to try to find out how many people knew of Paul Ferris' habit of always showering or bathing after a long innings." "I think I can answer that now, sir", Mike responded almost immediately, "I'd say every member of the team and if they knew most of the college would know also. He'd been in the first team for several seasons and had scored several big innings so I'd say it was pretty common knowledge." "OK, Mike. Let me ask you this, would he have done the same thing if the innings had been shorter or he's not scored many runs?" "Probably, sir. Most batsmen find the padding makes them sweat a lot, so I'd hazard a guess that he would have done." Mark took the opportunity to join in this aspect of the discussion, "What I'd like to know is this. Cricket is a funny game, a batsman can be out at any time, so if you believe it was a pre-meditated murder, presumably the killer would have had to be in the pavilion right from the start. I don't see any evidence to support that theory at all from what we know. Yes, I think the killer wanted Paul Ferris killed because he saw something connected to the murder of Lawrence Miller but I also think that the killing in the pavilion was opportunistic." Mike conceded the point and added, "I thought he was going to bat through to the end of the innings quite frankly and so, I suspect, did most of the spectators. So the only opportunity for a killing would have been during the tea interval. He certainly would have wanted a soak after such a long innings." Martin nodded and said, "I think as I said earlier we should assume for the moment that this was an opportunist strike or at best pre-meditated only once it was clear that Paul was going to bat for a long time. Let's go with the original proposal and start with the arrival of the student in the wheelchair. Mark, will you make the arrangements for additional police to be present and Mike, organise some `extras' for the cricket field. I'll break the good news to Alex Scott-Brown." The three investigating officers split up and went off to complete their preparatory tasks so that the reconstruction could begin as scheduled immediately after lunch. The reconstruction went really much better than anyone might have expected. Martin had arranged for a number of video cameras to be positioned in such a way that a record of the events taken from different viewpoints would be available for viewing after the event. It had begun with Anna Young pushing an empty wheelchair towards the pavilion that was populated by a number of policemen and watched by a number of people standing in various positions on the cricket field. Martin and Mark and a surprisingly large crowd of students watched as the events unfolded and Martin acted as master of ceremonies. The other principal participants took up their places as they had been on the day that Paul Ferris had been killed. When David Graham appeared as if by magic to play his part in the reconstruction, there was a slight but quite audible gasp of surprise from a number of participants and spectators. The Superintendent did not press anyone to say anything and emphasised that it would be possible for people to feedback at any time during or after the process had been completed. After each major development, Martin paused to see whether anyone of the participants or the observers had any comments on what they had seen. As the events developed, the person playing the part of Paul Ferris was seen to disappear from the cricket field into the pavilion. Martin wanted to pay particular attention to the actions of the main principals at this crucial moment. Something did not seem to accord with the Superintendent's memory of the description of what happened at this point that had been given by a number of participants. Martin made a note of this with the intention of raising it with the people concerned after the reconstruction had ended. The final act of the event was the point at which the body of Paul was found in the pavilion and people began hurrying to the scene from all directions. Once the last scene was completed, Martin spoke to all the participants, "Thank you, everyone. If anyone of the participants or those students who have been watching has any immediate comments on what they've seen, please let one of the members of my team or myself have them. You may want to think about it and in a while a video of the reconstruction will be available for you to look at. I may want to see a couple of you briefly so please make yourself available. Once again, thanks for participating and observing." Alex Scott-Brown spoke immediately after the Superintendent, "I'd also like to say on behalf of the College that we have been happy to help you, Superintendent, for all your efforts. We are desperately keen to see the identity of the killer revealed and hope very much that our participation in today's event will help in making that wish a reality." Martin smiled back at the College Principal and after he had thanked him for his support asked him rather more quietly if they could have a quick word. Slightly surprised that he was required to explain some matter to the Superintendent, Alex agreed. Martin explained that according to one account of events he had left Andy Stephens for several moments just after Paul Ferris had returned to the pavilion, but in the reconstruction he had not done so. "I'm sorry, Superintendent, you're quite right. I left him to speak to David Graham. I'm afraid I just plain forgot. I think I said to David that I thought that we stood a good chance this year or something like that. I have to say that Mr Stephens was exactly where I left him and then we walked over to the tea tent a few minutes later." "Thank you, Mr Scott-Brown. I know how easy it is to forget things in the heat of the moment. That's fine." Chief Inspector Mark Jamieson had also been taking notes on the events but most of his points were relatively minor but they would be worth raising at the meeting he and Martin would have as soon as the immediate tidying up had been completed. Sergeant Mike Rickwood had not really noticed much as he had concentrated on the view from the cricket field, which was rather distant from the pavilion. However, as he was walking towards the group of other principals, a rather excited group of students came rushing past. Among the group were Bobby Marsh and Peter Fowler and they and the others were discussing what they had observed. As he went by, Mike clearly heard Peter say to his friend Bobby, "I'm looking forward to seeing the video tomorrow. I'm sure there was something wrong today but I can't quite put my finger on what it was." Bobby put his fingers to his lips and hissed back, "Don't say too much or say it too loudly. We don't know who might be listening." Peter took these words of advice to heart but he was unaware, as was almost every other person present, that his words had been overheard and the young student's life was now in danger. Certainly Mike Rickwood had no idea of the significance of what he had overheard as he made his way towards the group of main participants, which was slowly breaking up and walking back to their various destinations. David Graham had disappeared from the scene and back into Police custody almost as quickly as he had appeared at the beginning of the reconstruction. The students had also largely returned to their dormitories and were preparing for their evening meal. Martin indicated that he wanted Mark and Mike to follow him to the incident room for a discussion. Once they were gathered in their base, the Superintendent began the proceedings by asking the other two if they had any initial comments. Both the other officers said that they had nothing pressing that they wanted to raise but would prefer to leave their comments until they could have the benefit of seeing the videos. Martin agreed that this would be a good idea but he wanted to share a couple of points with his junior colleagues before the end of the day. Martin shared the insight he had gained from his experience the previous night at the Leisure Centre with his young children. Mark saw the point immediately and Mike was soon aware of the significance of what had been said and then added a comment of his own, "I suppose that puts Lizzie Scott-Brown back in the frame." Martin acknowledged the point and added, "Yes, Mike, it does but it could also put Anna Young there too. However she only has a motive if she knew about Andy Stephens affair with Lizzie, but I can't see why she would kill Lawrence Miller. There's no motive and no evidence that she was anywhere near the pavilion when Paul Ferris was killed. However, it's a line worth following up." Martin went to the telephone and dialled a number. When the phone was answered, the Superintendent said, "Hello, Mr Stephens, could you spare us a moment or two. We have a small matter we would like to clear up and wondered if you could help us straight away." "Of .. course .. Superintendent", Andy Stephens replied rather nervously, "I'll come across to you straight away." Five minutes later Andy Stephens was at the door of the incident room looking rather anxious. Martin spoke to him reassuringly. "Thank you for coming so promptly, Mr Stephens. I know we asked you this question before but is there any chance that anyone else might know about your affair with Mrs Scott-Brown? Anna Young, for example?" Andy Stephens bristled for a moment and then in a clear and confident voice responded, "No Superintendent. I'm sure she didn't know about it. She would have finished with me if she had. We were very careful, Lizzie and I, I more than she was, I suspect. I can think of no way that she could have found out." "Thank you, Mr Stephens, that's fine but if you think of anything else or the name of anyone else who might have found out, please let us know. As a precaution I'm going to ask for the security in the dormitories to be on highest alert tonight. Please let me know if anyone, and I mean anyone, from outside the dormitory staff tries to enter the dormitory." Andy Stephens acknowledged this request and then, looking rather more relieved than when he had arrived, the Assistant House Master went back to his dormitory in College House. Martin next telephoned the House Master of Marston House, Raymond Collinson and made the same request. Raymond responded with an acknowledgement and then asked the Superintendent, "When you say `anyone from outside the dormitory', does that include the medical staff?" "Yes, Mr Collinson, it does. Why do you ask?" "Well, Superintendent, Anna Young arrived a few moments ago to see young Johnny Price. She said she ought to check on him as he might have got himself over-excited and stressed at the reconstruction this afternoon." "OK, Mr Collinson, please go up and check on Johnny and find Anna. We'll come right over." "What is it, sir?" Mike Rickwood asked anxiously as they ran out of the building and across towards Marston Hall. "Anna Young is in the dormitory, apparently she is visiting Johnny Price." "Oh my god, sir, Peter Fowler is in that dorm too!" Mike said as he increased his pace. Mark joined in the race to get to Marston House and, once they had arrived, Martin and the other two officers raced to the floor where both Johnny and Peter had their rooms. Standing by the door of Johnny Price's room was Raymond Collinson who shouted as they approached, "Neither Anna nor Johnny is here!! The room is completely empty!" "Try the door to Peter Fowler's room opposite, Mr Collinson", shouted Martin. It was obvious that the door was locked or jammed because it did not open as it should have done. However, with a lot of brute force the four men managed to break the door down. They were just in time. A terrified Peter Fowler lay on the bed with Anna Young towering over him and holding him still with one arm as she guided a hypodermic syringe towards one of his veins. Mike Rickwood launched himself across the room just at the right moment and caught the young Assistant Matron a blow that knocked her off balance. The hypodermic flew out of the nurse's hand and onto the floor fortunately out of her immediate reach. While Mark dived across the room in an attempt to recover the hypodermic, Raymond Collinson grabbed hold of the frightened teenager and pulled him off the bed and away to safety. Martin stood quietly blocking the exit from the room so that Anna Young could not make good her escape. After a few very hectic moments order was restored and Martin strode forward and looked straight into Anna Young's angry face and said, "Anna Young, I am arresting you on suspicion for the murders of Lawrence Miller and Paul Ferris and for the attempted murder of Peter Fowler. You are not obliged to say anything but it may harm your defence if you do not mention when questioned something you later rely on in Court. Anything you say will be taken down and may be given in evidence. Do you understand?" Anna Young nodded her head in acknowledgement but remained silent. Mark watched as Mike slipped handcuffs over the young nurse's wrists and slowly led her down the stairs. As the party emerged from the corridor they could see that a small and rather excited crowd had gathered to see what all the commotion was about. Mike led the way holding Anna Young firmly as he guided her down to the ground floor. Martin and Mark followed the prisoner down the stairs and Raymond Collinson brought up the rear with his arm firmly around the shaken, but mercifully uninjured, Peter. As he reached the bottom of the stairs Martin looked around and was pleased to note the face of Johnny Price was among those that had gathered. The mystery of his disappearance would soon be solved. Martin looked at him and called out, "Tell me Johnny, where have you been?" "I've had been watching television with some of his friends, sir. I think everyone knew that! I told Sister Anna Young that I was going to do it just after I saw her earlier." The Superintendent acknowledged the reply and the additional piece of evidence that his prisoner knew in advance that Johnny would not be in his room when she came to Marston House. After absorbing this evidence, Martin raised his hands and called for quiet as he indicated that he would say something to the assembled students. "As you can see, there has been an incident in one of the dormitories just now, but I am pleased to say that it had ended with nobody being seriously hurt. You will also have noticed that we have arrested someone in connection with this incident and also we wish to talk to her about the two recent killings at the College. I have asked Mr Collinson to arrange for Peter Fowler to be sent to hospital as a precaution but I believe he is OK. I am also pleased to see Johnny Price there as we were concerned about him but he is clearly also safe and well. Finally, let me say that I am not absolutely certain yet but I believe that the murder investigation that we have been conducting over the recent past is now almost at an end." Despite all the confusion and chaos, Mark had somehow managed to arrange for a Police Car to be standing outside the entrance to Marston Hall and he and Mike bundled Anna Young into it and then sped away. Shortly afterwards an ambulance also arrived and Peter Fowler was taken to the nearby hospital to be thoroughly checked over. Raymond Collinson went with the traumatised teenager and his wife, Marianne, took charge of the dormitory. Her first act was to contact Peter's parents and asked Martin who had remained behind to see if a Police car could be provided to bring them to the hospital. The Superintendent was more than happy to arrange this. After a telephone call to set up the arrangements for Peter Fowler's parents had been made, Martin then walked over to the main College building in order to speak to the Principal. Martin gave Alex Scott-Brown a full account of recent developments. However, the Superintendent would not be drawn on the question of Anna Young's motives and merely told the Principal that on the detailed issues of the case there was still a lot of work to be done but that they might know more after they had interviewed the prisoner. Before he left Alex Scott-Brown's study, Martin assured the Principal that he would be kept fully informed of further developments as and when they arose. The Principal expressed his thanks to Martin and his hope that the matter would be settled quickly and then the College could get back to normal again. Martin remained non-committal on this point and left the Principal's house to return to the incident room. Finally, before he left the College to join Mark and Mike at the local Police Station to which they had taken Anna Young, Martin telephoned his partner, Tom, to tell him that he would not be home until very late that evening and maybe not at all. "Does that mean you've got your man then?" Tom enquired. "Woman actually, Tom, and, yes I think we have, but now we have to do the hard part and unravel the whole sorry story. I'll see you later I hope." "Well done, Marty. I love you and so do the boys. Hope to see you later." "I hope so too. Love to them and you. Bye for now." Martin walked back to his temporary office, picked up the key materials he needed and then waited for the car to take him to the local Police Station. As he got into the car, the Superintendent allowed himself a small smile of satisfaction, even though he knew there was still more work to be done before he could prove that Anna Young was indeed the killer and whether she acted alone or with the assistance of others. to be concluded
