Matthew exclaimed with a devilish grin and a wink to Mikey, then closed his eyes and stepped through the wall with the 2-way mirror. Emerging in the interview room and opening his eyes as his fangs descended and his face distorted into a dark visage of the man he was, Matthew spoke, "What Alex means is, WE won't allow you to leave this room... ALIVE!" "YOU!" Jordan screamed in shock as Matthew came through the wall, the words the creature spoke reverberating through his mind. Alex stood. Turning to leave the interview room without looking directly at Matthew's face, he said, "He can't be allowed to harm anyone else." Alex then opened the door and stepped into the corridor. 'Don't worry my love, he's never going to hurt anyone ever again,' Matthew projected to Alex soothingly. Alex closed the door behind him, leaning against it and slowly sliding down to the floor, where he held his legs to his chest and started sobbing. --- "So what's your plan?" Bill asked, sitting with Jack and Tyson in James's office after looking over the file naming all the councillors who had committed crimes against the Shadow Council and humanity. "I want to walk into their council chamber and tell... no, DEMAND that they dissolve their council and that the murderous councillors agree to be taken to Uluru prison!" James exclaimed. "And when they refuse?" Tyson asked. "Then we drag them there!" Bill replied coldly. "What about the innocent ones?" Jack asked quietly, staring down at the desk; then looking up continued, "I mean, I know I'm not exactly innocent in their eyes but they can't all be guilty, can they?" "That's a good point. What about the innocent councillors that don't know what the older ones have been up to?" Bill asked. "I have an idea for them, and maybe work. But first we need to deal with the rogues!" James stated. "Agreed!" The two other men replied in unison. "I do want to include the boys in this too, and honestly I think we might need Alex's mental talents," James said. "How do you mean?" Bill asked, slightly concerned for his son. "Well he's the only vampire I've met that could so easily read a vampires or were- thylacines mind, especially considering that he had risen only a few hours before; and what he did for Jack... well that speaks for itself," James explained. "Alright, well what do you want us to do?" Bill asked. "Right now, just listen," James replied and then explained his plan to confront the thylacine council. --- Now alone in the interview room with Jordan, Matthew seated himself in the chair Alex had vacated, not taking his unblinking eyes off of Jordan for a second. Jordan cowered as far from Matthew as he could, scared half to death of the creature from his past. "You can't be here!" Jordan squeaked out. "But I am," Matthew replied flatly. "Bbbbbbut they said you couldn't exist!" Jordan exclaimed. "Let me guess... you told the officers that arrested you that I was a vampire and they thought you were crazy?" Matthew asked, to which Jordan nodded. "Then the corrections officers made you go see a shrink... maybe even put you through some kind of treatment for it?" Matthew queried. "E... E...CT," Jordan replied shakily. "Electroconvulsive therapy? Nice! I bet that hurt," Matthew said with a sadistic grin. "Bbbbut they said you were just a man, that you hit me and I blacked out," Jordan forced out. "Well I can assure you, I never laid a hand on you back then; and to be honest, those particular officers are some good friends of mine... They know what I am," Matthew said, motioning for Jordan to sit in the seat opposite him. "NO! YOU'RE NOT REAL! YOU CAN'T HURT ME!" Jordan yelled, closing his eyes tightly and covering his ears with his hands. "I am VERY real Jordan. Now please SIT IN THE DAMN CHAIR AND BE QUIET!" Matthew commanded. Jordan stood, stepped around the chair and sat down in it, staying as quiet as a mouse. "Now it's my turn to tell you something... There was only one reason I let you live 12 years ago: I wanted Alex to be able to get answers from you. Alex was too young back then to understand that some people are just... evil," Matthew said. Jordan just blinked, unable to speak. "I think you have now convinced Alex that there truly are evil people in the world. The funny thing is that the true monsters out there aren't the creatures like me: they're the people like YOU!" Matthew exclaimed bitterly. Jordan's face paled as his eyes widened. "Oh, I'm sorry! How stupid of me. you can talk, though there isn't anything you could say that would change my mind... but maybe if you beg I might do it quickly," Matthew smirked. "YOU can't kill me! We're in a prison! As soon as you left this room they would arrest you!" Jordan declared. Matthew laughed before saying, "I'm sure any evidence that you ever resided here has already been taken care of, and as for me... do you really think I couldn't just walk out of here? Hell, I could drag you out of here by your tongue and none of the guards would even know you were there!" Jordan thought a few moments: he couldn't run, he couldn't hide, he couldn't even scream for help. Maybe begging was his only option. "I... I don't want to die, please, please... I'll do anything you ask," Jordan pleaded. "Tell you what: if you can convince me not to kill you, I'll let you leave this room," Matthew said, almost smiling. Jordan scoured his mind for something, anything, he could use to help him come up with a convincing lie. "I... I promise I'll never harm anyone again, you have my word. I'll stay away from kids, and all that. I'll even go to therapy," Jordan said, putting on a performance that any Hollywood actor would be proud of, or so he thought. --- "But that all hinges on Victoria helping us; are you certain she will?" Bill asked, having just heard James's plan. "Of course I am. She may be a ruthless bitch, but Victoria's never been devious or a cold-hearted killer. She wants what's best for her kind; if she had known what her fellow councillors have been up to, I'm sure she would have come seeking help long ago," James replied, leaning back into his chair behind his desk. "And you think she will listen with me here? I mean, you have proof right there saying that I'm one of the killers you want to send to prison. What if she decides she wants me to go there too?" Jack asked concerned. "Lets worry about that when she's here. I'm sure that once she realizes that you aren't the man you were she will be fine. Just remember: you, too, have a pretty major part in this plan," James smirked. "Yeah, bait for the wolves, so to speak," Jack replied uneasily. James laughed a little before saying, "Maybe, but she doesn't even know you're here yet. I assume all she does know is that your van is at my warehouse. So we have an edge. YOU my friend are our surprise!" --- Alex sat on the floor in the corridor with his back against the interview room door, sobbing uncontrollably as he held his knees and gently rocked back and forth. "Alex, come with me. I'll take you somewhere we can sit and wait for Matthew," Mikey said, kneeling down in front of Alex. "Nnnno, I'll wait here," Alex sobbed. "Alex, I know you realise what Matthew is going to do, otherwise you wouldn't be crying. But trust me, however he is going to do it, it WILL be messy, and I know he wouldn't want you to see or hear it. So, please come with me?" Mikey asked softly. Alex nodded and allowed Mikey to lead him down the corridor away from the interview room; as they passed the 2-way window Alex glanced in at Matthew and Jordan both sitting, Jordan looked terrified but hopeful. 'Don't let that monster live,' Alex projected to Matthew as he was led off. 'Don't worry love, it's under control. You just go with Mikey, I'll be outshortly,' Matthew replied. Mikey led Alex around a few corners to a waiting area; he sat in a chair and motioned for Alex to sit beside him. "I talked to Matthew a little before. He's right, you know? You needed to come here and see that man. He was the only one that could tell you why he did what he did," Mikey said. "I know! That's not why I'm upset," Alex whispered. "Then why?" Mikey asked perplexed. Alex wiped his face with his shirt then said, "Because he's right! There are evil people in the world. I used to think that there was always something good in people, some redeeming quality; but Jordan proves to me that there isn't always, that some people are beyond help." "It's sad, but places like this prison wouldn't be needed if everyone was good, and the same goes for our kind and the rest of the shadow community. If they all could coexist peacefully there wouldn't be a need for secrecy, or a need for trained operatives like Matthew," Mikey said. "I understand that, but it doesn't mean people shouldn't be given a second chance," Alex said. "That's true, and there are a lot of people in this prison that are here because they made a mistake, or committed a crime out of passion. Those people accept they were in error and are here paying for their crimes," Mikey said. "What about the rest?" Alex asked. "The rest are here simply because they were caught, like Jordan. If it wasn't for Matthew's involvement, Jordan would have likely gotten away with what he did to you, and you wouldn't be here now," Mikey replied. "A soul that has conceived one wickedness can nurse no good thereafter," Alex said. "Good line. Sophocles, right?" Mikey asked. "Yes. My interpretation of it is that once a person has committed a truly evil act, that there's no reprieve from that," Alex answered. "That's not always the case," Mikey said. "Yes I know that, but that man in there told me that as soon as he was out he was going to look for some innocent kid to start over with. I can't let that happen!" Alex exclaimed. "So why didn't you do something to him while you were in there? There wouldn't be anything to worry about. The consul asked me to remove all records of Jordan from the prison system. Officially, he was never here or even arrested, and I'm sure James has also got operatives doing the same with birth records and such. Basically, Jordan Wright no longer exists," Mikey explained. "Really? I didn't know James could do something like that. But no, I couldn't kill someone no matter how bad or evil they were," Alex replied. "Trust me, there's a lot James can do that he doesn't tell anyone. And as to killing someone, believe me, there will be a time when you'll have to. I can tell you from experience that it's never easy, and you won't like it. But you want to know something?" Mikey asked. "What?" Alex replied. "If someone one as innocent as you liked the idea of killing, I'd be worried," Mikey said, smiling warmly resting a hand on Alex's shoulder. --- James watched on the screen in his office as Victoria turned onto the dirt road leading to his property. Letting out a sigh he thought to himself, 'No rest for the weary.' To those assembled in his office, he said, "Here she comes. I'm going to meet her at the door. Bill, Tyson, get to Tommy and Calvin and tell them what's going on: you'll find them in the training room." "What about me?" Jack asked. "I want you to keep out of sight until I call for you. Victoria can't know you're here until I've had a chance to explain," James replied. "Okay, I'll just go sit in my room..." Jack started but was cut off by James. "No, Jack, why don't you help Marie in the kitchen? I'm sure she'd like the company... Actually, that would be a great way to reveal your presence here to her. When I'm ready, I'll call for a couple of cups of tea or coffee. The last thing that Victoria would expect is for you to be the one to bring them in!" James said smirking. "Why would she? To her, I'm a ruthless killer, not a waiter!" Jack laughed his first genuine laugh in a long time. Smiling, James said, "Alright guys, let's get ready for our guest!" He ushered everyone out of his office. As each went off take care of their assigned task, James went to the massive front door and headed outside to wait. --- "Okay, I'm releasing my control over you," Matthew said, letting his fangs retract and his face return to normal. "Tttthank you! I promise I'll never even think of doing anything like what brought me here ever again," Jordan grovelled as he stood and started making his way to the door to leave the room. As he cautiously walked past a seated Matthew a smile broke out on Jordan's face. Reaching out to turn the handle, Matthew called out, "Wait!" Jordan stopped, and turned to face him. "I've seen into your mind. I KNOW you have no intention of keeping your promise. You are a monster," Matthew said, and in an instant he was standing within arms reach of Jordan, his fangs out and his face again twisted into its demonic form. Jordan stared into the glowing eyes of Matthew's demonic face as he felt a slight discomfort in his chest; looking down, he was surprised to see Matthew's hand imbedded up to the wrist. Matthew quickly pulled his bloodied hand out of Jordan's chest, holding the shocked man's heart as it beat its last few beats. "Now you really are a heartless monster," Matthew smirked as Jordan stumbled back slightly. Jordan turned around and reached for the door handle, gasping he opened the door and took a step forward, falling dead on the floor in the corridor. --- Mikey and Alex sat talking for a few minutes until Alex tensed, then relaxed and sighed, "It's finished." "How do you know?" Mikey asked. Alex turned back to Mikey and relaxed a little more before he spoke, "I've been in contact with Matthew the whole time." "Mentally?" Mikey asked, surprised. "Yes," Alex replied simply. "But Matthew said you were newly risen! When did you rise?" Mikey asked. "With all that's happened it seems like a long time, but it was only yesterday afternoon," Alex replied. "BUT...but that's not possible!" Mikey exclaimed. "Alex is special," Matthew said, stepping around the corner. "Alright, I guess you don't want to get into it. Well what about the mess?" Mikey asked. "What mess?" Matthew replied as he sat on Alex's opposite side and took his hand before continuing, "It's as you told Alex: Jordan Wright no longer exists." "How did you know that?" Mikey asked. "Alex informed me," Matthew smiled then said, "Mikey, you don't need to worry about any mess. I've taken care of all that." "You didn't go anywhere. How did you do that?" Mikey asked. "Full of questions, aren't we? I'll just say that some ancient tribal magic helped and leave it at that," Matthew replied, smirking. "Matthew, can we go home now? I don't like being here. It was hard enough to restrain myself from going into Jordan's mind and that prisoner when we arrived... I just want to go home," Alex said, standing to go. "Yes, my love, we can go, if that's alright with Mikey here?" Matthew asked. "Of course. As you said, Jordan no longer exists, so really you were never here. Don't worry about the man at the sign-in desk. He's one of ours," Mikey replied. "A vampire or a council operative?" Matthew asked, confused. Mikey laughed a little then replied, "Neither. A few years ago, he heard something he shouldn't have about a plot to kill someone on the outside. The people involved found out and threatened to kill his family if he told anyone: apparently they were going after some government official, someone high up there. But that's human politics, so I don't really follow it." "Yeah, I think I know more about human politics than I really want to right now. Anyway, what happened?" Matthew asked with a laugh. "Well, he didn't know who to go to: he asked a few of the guards here if they knew of any people who would help him. Eventually he got to me... so I called in a few favours. Suffice to say his family was never harmed, the assassination never happened, and ever since he has been grateful," Mikey explained. "So he's a friend, that's good... Does he know what you are?" Matthew asked, concerned. "No, I never told him, and he never asked," Mikey replied. "Good. Well, I think it's time we took our leave of this place," Matthew said, turning toward the corridor to leave, Alex at his side. Mikey followed behind them as they passed the interview room. He was shocked; the room was spotless. It looked as if no one had been in there at all. When they reached the visitors entrance, Mikey stopped Matthew and Alex. Taking a card from his pocket he said, "Matthew, here... contact me sometime. I'll see what I can do about getting all your old mates back together." "Thanks, Mikey," Matthew smiled and took the card. "Anytime, mate! You take care," Mikey said, leaning in and hugging Matthew and Alex. 'Thank you Mikey,' Alex projected as he and Matthew walked out the doors, making Mikey turn back towards them smiling. --- "...hopefully they don't resist, and choose to follow 'Jackson' to Uluru prison," Bill finished relaying James's plan to Tommy and Calvin as they stood in the training room. "Otherwise it could get really bloody!" Tyson added. "Why's that?" Tommy asked. "You remember how Jack was before Alex helped him? Well imagine 5 or 6 of him, all enraged and ready to kill," Tyson said. "How long's this going to take? Obviously we can't just walk in there today and demand they go to prison," Calvin said. "I'm not sure. James is going to talk with Victoria when she gets here. Then I think we'll need to prepare. It might be a week or two," Tyson said. "That's reasonable, I think. We'll need to tell Matthew and Alex so we can all be prepared. I KNOW the thylacines won't do what we say. This is going to be tricky, and if we're not careful they might come looking for us like Jackson did," Calvin said shakily, unsure of what might happen. --- "Are you alright love?" Matthew asked Alex as they walked to the car. "No, but I will be. Thank you for bringing me here to do this," Alex replied. "I promised I would help you, and I am; I'm always going to be here for you, Alex," Matthew said lovingly. "Thank you, now can we please go? If I'm here much longer, I might actually harm some of these prisoners!" Alex exclaimed. "I hope that was a joke," Matthew said as they reached the car. "It was... mostly," Alex mumbled as he got in the passenger seat. "Okay, let's go home. I'm sure a few folks are worried about us," Matthew said, getting in and starting the engine. "Yeah... mum," Alex laughed as they pulled out of the visitor's car park and headed home. ******************************** Thanks for reading Angel in black chapter 17, be sure to stop by my site where you will find a blog with some interesting insight into the chapters and also the story closet where I also post my work. thanks again, Mikey. http://mikeysmusings.weebly.com/index.html http://Mikey.thestorycloset.org
