Everyone had managed to fall asleep, though. Rather late, but they slept. Bill and Marie cried each other to sleep. And Tommy fell asleep thinking about how Alex had saved him. Marcos even slept, not that he really needed to. When he woke up it was early morning, and the sun was just rising. He quietly walked outside with his cell phone and made a call. "Cal, I need to ask a favour, but I can't ask on the phone. Can you meet me somewhere close by?" Marcos asked. "Sure, Marc. Where?" Calvin asked. "Come to my house in an hour," Marcos directed him. "Alright, Marc, I'll be there," Calvin replied. "Thanks, Cal." --- Tommy woke a little while later to find Marcos gone. He found a note addressed to him that read: 'Tommy, I have gone to meet a friend. I won't be long but I want you to be alert. When I come back you will know. See you soon, love Marky.' Tommy looked around, and, sure enough, Marcos's clothes were all gone but his bag and his few things were still by Alex's bed. 'Good, Marky will be back,' he thought. Then he went and took a quick shower to wake up a little. He dried himself off and put on a pair of trunks, and then went to make some breakfast. Bill and Marie came into the kitchen following the smell of good food cooking. They both looked like they had just woken up. Tommy put two fresh cups of coffee on the table for them. They both grunted and grabbed the cups off the table. "Better?" Tommy asked. "Yeah, thanks, Tommy," Bill said. "Yes, dear, much better. Thank you," Marie said. "Where's Marcos this morning?" Bill asked. "He left a note saying he was going to meet a friend then he would be back. So I'm not sure where he is," Tommy said. "Alright. Well I just hope he knows what he's doing," Bill replied. --- Marcos again walked to his former home under a cloaking spell. When he arrived there, he found a forensics team going through the ashes. He had a quick look over their findings. Just as he thought, they found one victim in what used to be the bedroom. And it appeared the fire started in the bedroom; they would report it as an accidental fire. He was glad that they didn't report the broken latch on the front door. 'They probably put that down to the firemen that came to the house,' he thought. The fire was so intense that it gutted the house and the roof had collapsed. So very little evidence remained to prove what had actually happened. It was then he noticed someone across the street hiding in the shade of a large tree. 'Calvin, you stick out like a sore thumb!' Marcos thought with a chuckle. 'Marc, where are you?' Calvin responded. "Right here." Marcos said as he walked up behind Calvin. "Damn Marc! Don't do that! What did you want to talk to me about?" Calvin asked. "Did the consul tell you about our discussion last night?" Marcos asked. "No, he returned from talking to you and went straight into a closed meeting," Calvin explained. "Well, I didn't want to say anything to him last night, but the vampire that was sent last night was a council assassin or at least made to look like one," Marcos explained. "Do you have any proof to back that up?" Calvin asked. "I have his sword... It should be proof of something." Marcos then handed him the sword. Calvin's eyes were wide when he saw the sword. "What do you want me to do, Marc?" "I need you to find out what's going on, and I need you to do it without the consul knowing. He knows something but isn't telling me," Marcos said. "Alright Marc, for you I will do this," Calvin promised. "Thanks Cal. Also, can you find the location of the were-thylacines leader for me?" Marcos asked. "You know they're protected, if you plan to," Calvin started to warn but Marcos cut him off. "I know, Cal! I won't harm him, I promise," Marcos said. "Alright Marc. I'll contact you when I find something," Calvin said. "Thank you my friend," Marcos said and Calvin left. Marcos crossed the street back to the remains of his house; he went around to the backyard and looked under the back porch. He retrieved a black bag then left to return to his new home. --- Tommy, Bill and Marie had finished their breakfast. Bill and Marie had taken the day off work; it was Friday so they now had a long weekend. Tommy had gone and sat with Alex. He couldn't think of anything else to do; he felt responsible for what happened to his brother. "You're not responsible for this Tommy," Marcos said, making his presence known. "I know Marky, but I can't help but feel I am. He died saving me." Tommy said tears welling up. Marcos sat next to Tommy and hugged him. "It will all be ok, Tommy," Marcos soothed. "I hope so Marky," Tommy said giving Marcos a half smile. "Where did you go this morning?" he asked. "I had to go back to what was left of my house and pick up something, and I met a friend there. I asked him to help me find out what's going on," Marcos explained. "Do you think he will be able to help?" Tommy asked. "I hope so Tommy. He has almost as many contacts as the consul. If Calvin can't help us then no one can," Marcos said. "Okay. If you say he can help, I trust you. What's in the bag?" Tommy asked. "Just a few things I didn't have time to get last night," Marcos said then opened his bag and removed a Japanese Katana and a few knives and daggers of varying sizes. Tommy watched him take a wooden box out of the bag too. "What's that?" he asked. "It's a pistol I had custom made a few years ago. I saw one like it in a TV show and thought it might be useful," Marcos answered opening the box to show Tommy the weapon. "It's a custom Jackal .454; I had to have custom rounds made for it too," Marcos said as he handed Tommy the unloaded gun. "Wow! This thing's heavy," Tommy said a little shocked. "It's more like a small cannon! What would you use it on?" he asked. "Vampires, were-wolves and were-thylacines and other creatures. It can take the head off a vampire pretty easily. Recoil's a bit of a pain though," Marcos smirked. "Oh," Tommy said carefully placing the weapon back in the box. "It's ok Tommy, its not loaded. Even if it were I wouldn't let you use it, it's a very powerful gun. Any normal human wouldn't be able to handle it. You might with all your training, but I still couldn't let anyone else use it," Marcos said, then put everything back in the bag and put it under Alex's bed. He muttered something Tommy couldn't quite hear and the bag disappeared. "Where did the bag go?" Tommy asked. "It's still there, just hidden," Marcos told him. "Marky, I tried to research vampires and thylacines but other than movie vampires or humans who like to drink blood and the extinct thylacines there's very little information. I'm curious about you and also them. If I am going to be able to protect our family, I need to know more," Tommy said. "Well, first, forget just about everything you have heard in the movies or books! Most of it is fiction, and some is meant to mislead and was publicised by the council. Vampires can go out in daylight and aren't nearly as easy to kill as Bram Stoker would have you believe. There are certain toxins that can be painful and silver is extremely irritating, especially if it penetrates the skin. But the best known method for disposing of a vampire is fire, and dismemberment usually works too," Marcos explained leaving out some details. "Okay, and what about the were-thylacines?" Tommy asked. "They are a different story! Powerful, vicious and extremely dangerous is how I would describe them. Decapitation I've found is the most efficient way to kill one of them, but it's also messy. But only try anything on one of them if they are paralysed or you catch them unaware. They are very fast moving, not quite as fast as a vampire but faster than any human, you included Tommy," Marcos said. "Oh right.... Well, is there any more training you can give me?" Tommy asked. "There's weapons training and maybe some more hand to hand combat training. I will start your training soon. I would prefer to wait but I don't think we have the time," Marcos told him. "Okay Marky, thank you," Tommy said. The rest of that day passed with Marcos staying by Alex's side. Tommy went outside and trained by himself. Marie was trying to occupy her self and not think about Alex. Bill was trying the same but wasn't as successful. He would check in on Alex and Marcos every hour, just to reassure himself that Alex was still there. Bill hadn't gone so much as a day without seeing his son, not since Alex was a small boy. To Bill it was like Alex was in a coma. Bill walked into the bedroom and sat on the edge of the bed. "Sorry if I disturbed you Marcos. I just wanted to sit here with him," Bill said. "Quite alright Bill, I'm going to help train Tommy a little more, and I would like it if someone stayed here with Alex," Marcos said getting off the bed. He then spoke "Incantus Reverso!" and took the black bag out from under the bed. "What's that Marcos?" Bill asked. "Just a few tools I thought might be needed. I'm going to train Tommy how to use a few of them," Marcos said then started walking out of the room. "Alright, be careful," Bill said as Marcos left. 'Alex, I hope you can hear this. I love you son It hurts so much that you aren't here now talking and cheering us all up like you always did. I just hope you will be the same young man you were before,' Bill thought. 'Daddy!' Alex cried in the void. He couldn't keep track of time there and to him it felt like days. Only Marcos' constant singing had made it bearable. 'I miss you all so much!' he thought. 'Two more days, son. Then we get you back; Marcos said three days then you would wake up,' Bill thought, then kissed his son's forehead and was quiet. He thought for a moment, then remembered one of Alex's favourite songs and mentally started singing it. 'Aww dad! Christina Aguilera's Beautiful! I love you dad,' Alex thought as he cried. --- Out in the back yard, Marcos was showing Tommy how to use some of the blades that he had brought with him from his house. "Okay, Tommy, attack me!" Marcos said firmly. Marcos handed Tommy the katana after first showing him how to hold the sword. Tommy was hesitant. "But I could hurt," Tommy started to whine. Marcos cut him off. "That's the idea Tommy! If you hesitate, someone could get killed." Marcos then rushed Tommy with a hunting knife in each hand. Tommy was forced to defend himself. He was easily able to block Marcos' attacks, though he guessed correctly that Marcos wasn't trying very hard. "Marky, how do you expect me to learn if you go easy on me?" he said, starting to get frustrated. They had been at it for over an hour already. "Alright!" Marcos moved quicker then Tommy could see and was suddenly at Tommy's back with a knife at his throat and one ready to gut him. "If I were here to kill you, Tommy," Marcos moved away from Tommy, "you wouldn't know until you were bleeding to death," Marcos said. "Marky, don't go easy on me! I don't care if you rough me up a bit! I can handle it," Tommy told Marcos. "Alright Thomas. I won't go easy. But you need to attack me so I can gauge just how I need to train you," Marcos said. "And at this point you couldn't possibly hurt me Tommy. Now attack me!" Marcos demanded. "Okay Marcos. You'd better be ready!" Tommy then charged Marcos katana ready to strike. Marcos didn't move an inch until the last possible moment; he was holding his hunting knives with the tip's pointing towards his elbows. Marcos brought his right arm up and blocked Tommy's move then moved his left arm around to Tommy's throat leaving a small cut. "OWW! That hurt Marky," Tommy wailed. "You said you didn't care if you got roughed up a bit! It's just a scratch, you're okay," Marcos said with a laugh. Tommy launched into another attack this time sweeping the blade from right to left. Marcos blocked with his left arm and stopped the blade but he didn't see the punch coming from his right and Tommy's fist connected with Marcos' jaw. If Marcos were human, he would have been knocked cold. "Nice move Tommy," Marcos said rubbing his jaw. It was sore but was already healing. "SHIT! I put a lot into that punch. I think my hand's broken," Tommy said, holding his hand. "Let me take a look," Marcos said. Then he had a good look at Tommy's hand and decided that nothing was broken just sprained. "It's fine, nothing broken. Didn't I tell you not to hit a vampire in the face?" Marcos said grinning. "NO! You didn't tell me not to hit you in the face!" Tommy said angrily. "Oops," Marcos said with a chuckle. "I think that will be all for today. Let's go inside. You should put some ice on that hand," he said, walking inside. "OOPS! What do you mean oops?" Tommy huffed as he followed Marcos inside. --- That night Marie made dinner for the family, and Marcos even joined them. He didn't eat much but he did enjoy the meal. After dinner they all tried to relax for a few minutes, but Marcos' cell rang. "Excuse me a minute," He said. Marcos quickly walked out into the backyard to take the call. "Cal, what do you have? Really! No, don't say anymore. I want you to come here; I might need your help. See you soon Cal." Marcos ended the call and stood there a moment, "Shit!" he exclaimed softly. "Marcos what's happened?" Bill asked as he walked up behind Marcos and placed a hand on his shoulder. "It appears that the man who sent the team to kill me before is sending another. This time there's more, a six man team. Vampires, humans and were-thylacines," Marcos spat. "Oh god! Why?" Bill asked suddenly afraid for his family. "They are coming to try to kill me and whoever else is near me at the time. Someone must have been watching when I killed that vampire and turned Alex, as they are going to be here in three days," Marcos said. He didn't think Calvin would betray him, but he wasn't so sure about James. It had been a long time. "What do we do, Marcos? I need to protect my family," Bill said a little panicked. "Calm down dad! I've taken more than that on before. And Tommy is pretty well trained too. And I have a friend coming that should be able to help us," Marcos grinned. "I trust you Marcos. Just tell me if I can do anything," Bill said, then started to walk back inside. Marcos knew Calvin wouldn't be there until morning, and he wasn't as powerful as the consul. He couldn't just open up a portal down the street and step out. So Marcos went into sit with Alex; he didn't plan on getting any sleep that night. He was going to stay on guard. Everyone else went to bed that night. All but Bill slept a little easier. Bill worried about what was to come. --- Saturday came pretty quickly; Marcos had stayed up most of the night. Bill finally dozed off in the early hours of the morning. This time Marcos got up and made breakfast for everyone, and he couldn't help but laugh when the three of them walked in looking like something from a zombie movie. He placed three cups of coffee down for them, and they snatched them up. "My friend Calvin will be arriving sometime today," He announced. "Who is Calvin?" Tommy asked. "He's an old friend.... Well he's a young old friend - he's also a vampire. He's about the same age as me and works for Consul Larson," Marcos said. "Can we trust him?" Bill asked. "I do, with my life," Marcos assured. "Marky, can you train me some more today?" Tommy asked. "Yes if someone will stay with Alex for me," He said. 'Nice song choice yesterday, Bill. One of Alex's favourites?' Marcos thought to Bill. Bill nodded to Marcos then said, "I'm going to go to the store for a few things. Do we need anything?" "Just some milk, dear, and some more coffee I think," Marie said, then they all started laughing. "Alright, milk and coffee.... Got it," Bill said getting up to go get dressed. 'Bill, make sure you get a good one,' Marcos thought to Bill as he left the room. "I guess I'm sitting with Alex today then?" Marie said. "Seems so, mum, unless you want to watch Marky slice me up?" Tommy said laughing. "No, I'll be quite alright with my sleeping son, thank you very much," she said. "Marie, you know," Marcos began but Marie cut him off. "I know, dear, but you said your self he will wake and can hear us in some way, so just let me think he's just sleeping ... please?" Marie pleaded. Both Marcos and Tommy hugged Marie. "My boys!" she cried. "No more of this! You two go train, spar or whatever it is you are going to do before I chase you out of here," she laughed. "Yes, mum!" they both said in unison. --- Marcos and Tommy trained the entire morning, only pausing so Tommy could have a drink every now and then. Marcos was amazed at how quickly Tommy was picking up what he was teaching, almost like he was born to it. In the middle of blocking an attack from Tommy, Marcos realised someone was watching them. 'Cal you better step out, or my pupil might hear you,' Marcos thought, just as Tommy suddenly spun around and looked straight at Calvin. "Come out slowly!" Tommy demanded. "Okay! I'm not here to harm anyone," Calvin said. "Who are you?" Tommy asked. "Tommy, this is my friend Calvin. Remember I said he would be coming today?" Marcos asked. "Oh ok. I... I'm sorry... I just heard a noise and reacted," Tommy apologised, dropping the sword to his side. "It's ok Tommy. If I didn't know who he was, I would have done the same," Marcos said. "I should be apologising. After everything that's happened here, I shouldn't have surprised you," Calvin said. "Don't worry about it, Cal. Tommy you want to take a rest for a little while?" Marcos asked. "Yeah, I do, Marky. Can we get back to it later?" Tommy asked. "Yeah, bud," Marcos said patting Tommy on the shoulder. Tommy sheathed the katana and put in on the table by the back door; the whole time he couldn't take his eyes off of Calvin. Marcos saw but mistook Tommy's glances as him being wary of Calvin. He failed to notice Calvin glancing back. "Cal, tell me what you found," Marcos said. "The last attack was organised by Jackson; he has ordered another attack," Calvin told him. "I already know that, Cal... You didn't tell anyone besides the consul about me turning Alex?" Marcos asked. "NO! I never told anyone.... OH! That's why they planned it to happen in three days.... Shit!" Calvin exclaimed. "Yeah Cal, only two people know about me turning Alex: you and the consul. And I know you wouldn't have betrayed me, Calvin." Marcos glared at Calvin, an unspoken threat lurking in the air between them. "Never Marc ... never," Calvin said, scared. "So, either someone was watching when I dispatched that assassin and saw me turn Alex or," Marcos said. "Or the consul is working against you," Calvin finished. "And I just can't believe that James would ever do that," Marcos said. Then he asked, "What else did you learn?" "The team that's coming is going to be led by Jackson himself," Calvin said. "Now that is something. At least I won't need to go looking for him, and if something happens to him, we were just defending our selves," Marcos said. "I guess Marc... What do you mean we?" Calvin asked. "You're in danger too, Cal, and we are going to need your help. Besides, if someone else is behind all this, then they probably know you have been helping me," Marcos explained. "I see. Alright, I guess I'm staying," Calvin said. He knew better than to argue with Marcos; he learned a long time ago that it was futile. "Who knows you might need my protection!" Marcos laughed as he put his arm around Calvin's shoulders. They both knew that wasn't the case, after all they had shared. After years of training together and fighting side by side, they were so evenly matched that even after twenty four straight hours of sparing they couldn't hit each other. They had been best friends after that. --- After Marcos turned his back on the Council to hunt his family's killer, Calvin had taken Marcos' place. It was hard on them both. Marcos had been the head of security and intelligence for Consul Larson, and Calvin had worked for Marcos. Marcos never treated him as such, though, and he always shared the work load out evenly between them. Lots of long nights and even longer days made them very close friends. Even after Marcos went against the Consul and everyone was saying he had gone rouge, Calvin refused to believe any of them. "You sure about this Marc?" Calvin asked. "No, Cal, I'm not sure, but this is just something I have to do. I promised myself that I would find my family's murder someday, and now I finally have the start I needed," Marcos said. Leaning in, he gently kissed Calvin on the lips. "I love you Cal," Marcos said softly then left. "I love you too Marc," Calvin whispered as he stood in shock. For years Calvin had the biggest crush on Marcos. He thought there was something more between them but when Marcos left, in that moment he thought he had lost everything. It was years before they would see each other again. Calvin did keep up with the reports about the were-thylacine deaths; someone had covered up the name of the person responsible, but he knew.... Marcos was responsible. Then the last report about the were-thylacines reached Calvin's desk. That was the one that did it. It stated clearly that Marcos tortured and killed Sirus, the brother of the were-thylacines' leader, Jackson. Even consul Larson couldn't hide that report; Jackson wanted justice for his brother's murder. And, to Jackson, that meant a fox hunt. There were reports of Marcos being sighted in the major coastal cities of Australia, but then he just disappeared. No one knew if Marcos was in hiding somewhere or if someone had caught him and killed him. Then about fifteen years later Marcos contacted Calvin with a simple letter: 'I'm fine.' It was enough for Calvin to be over the moon. He had known Marcos was still around, but that just confirmed it. Back in the present, Calvin was just happy to be with his best friend. It had been too long. ******************************** Thanks for reading Angel in black chapter 7, be sure to stop by my site where you will find a blog with some interesting insight into the chapters abd also the story closet where i also post my work. thanks again, Mikey. http://mikeysmusings.weebly.com/index.html http://thestorycloset.org/node/38
