A car honked furiously as it drove murdurously passed Jaden's dad's car. Jaden and his father were on their way to a camping ground somewhere near Cleveland National Forest. The Lord knows how Jaden's father had come across it and Jaden was not happy. At the tender age of 16, he was being dragged on a long drive from San Diego to some backwoods camping gound. All in all, Jaden was not a happy camper. Their car was chucked full of camping gear and Jaden was currently listening to Evanescence on his iPod. He had quite a few of their songs and it provided the perfect lyrics for his sad and depressed state. Bring me to Life was currently one that was trying to lift his spirits. It wasn't working. Jared and his father were the only two family survivors of their once happy family. His mother and sister were killed in a car accident a year ago. The pain was still consuming them and Jaden's father though it would be good for the two of them to get out, hence the camping trip.Jaden wondered how long he was supposed to endure the isolation from civilization. He was afraid to ask ashis father was currently in one of his mourning funks and he didn't want his father to give him an answer he didn't want. Jaden resolved to remain quite throughout the remainder of the drive. They arrived about two hours before sunset. His father was back to his normal springy and enthusiastic self, which only made Jaden more depressed. Dalen, Jaden's father, noticed Jaden's sourfacial expression and smilled to himself. He needed to turn that frown upside down. "Oh buck up son! This will be fun, I promise you and it will only be for three days." Jaden forced out a smile, which came out as a sneer. "Come on, let's quickly find a spot for and get settled in," Dalen added. They finished setting up as the sun set behind the distant horizon. They had found a site near the small lake and it was enclosed with thick trees and bushes, giving it a cosy feel. Jaden stood at the edge of the lake, peering at his reflection in the clear mirror-like water. His skin was plae white and his hair was a honey gold colour that curled long and wildly on his head. His eyes were a brilliant emerald green that somehow changed colour according to his mood, going from deep green to lighter shade when he was angry, almost as if it were flashing. He stood at five feet and nine inches tall and was slender with toned musculature. He was the splitting image of his father. Many times they were mistaken for brothers. which suited them just fine. He sighed as the sun finally dropped below his vision and walked back to his father, who was conjuring up some type ofsustenance for them on a small fire. "I miss them so much," Jaden said softly, feeling that familliar knob in his throat indicating that tears were near. "I know my son, I do too. Have a seat, food's nearly done." Jaden had come to the conclusion that camping wouldn't be such a bad idea and it would help him and his father bond. They ate dinner in silence, and then turned in for the night. they huddled together in the small tent, sharing a matress and blankets. Dalen was spooning Jaden, which was normal them. Jaden would often crawl into his father's bed at night when he was feeling scared or depressed, and being close to his father helped him alot. Jaden felt safe in his arms. "I love you dad", he whispered, tears running down the side of his face. Dalen pulled Jaden more tightly into his embrace. "My baby, I love you too." Dalen's eyes were equally filled with tears and the two of the fell asleep that way. It was still pitch black outside when Jaden and his father were startled awake by a loud growling sound. It sounded deathly close to their camp site. "What was that?" Jaden asked, fear creeping its way through his body. RRROOAARR! Dalen and Jaden jumped at the sound. It was coming from directly out front of the tent. The two guys were shaking badly and tears had spilled over Jaden's face. He was terrified.. HE felt his father rummage around for something and soon saw a flash of metal. His father had taken out a pocket knife and was moving toward the back of the tent. He lifted the knife and made a long slit in the tent's back. He motioned for jaden to climb through and he soon followed. Dalen had to keep Jaden safe. The growling could still be heard as they left the tent and crept quietly into the forest. They were a few yards into the forest when a twig snapped under Jaden's bare foot, making a noise that sounded as loud as a gun shot. RRROOAARR! It was louder this time and the could hear something advancing on them. Their hearts were beating tattoos in their chests and sweat was forming on their foreheads. "RUN!" Dalen screamed. They surged foreward through the forest, their feet rapidly pounding on the ground, crushing plants and twigs underneath. They could hear something huffing as it ran to catch up to them. "Jaden we have to split up!" Dalen said. "NO!" I won't leave you." This three day camping trip was turnong into a nightmare, and Jaden hoped it really was one. His hope was crushed when he heard the roar again. "We have to, We won't outrun it. I'll distract it so that you can get away." "No, no, no!" "Yes Jaden! Please, you have to go. I'll be fine, it's you that's most important to me and I have to protect you. Get to the main centre and call for help." Dalen was nearly sobbing. "I love you, Dad!" "I love you too. Now Go!" Jaden nodded resolutely and surged foreward faster, turning slightly to the right, in the direction he thought the main centre would be. The forest was pitch black at night, and he could hear his dad screaming "This way!" trying to ditract the creature. He choked back a sob and continued to run foreward. A few seconds later he heard a bone chilling scream and knew his world was finally empty. That was his father screaming! "DAAAAD!" Jaden screamed. He tripped over a tree root, fell and saw and knew only darkness... The same could be said for Dalen, was was lying on his back in a deep and dark crevice. Author's note: That's it for chapter 1.
