“Wonder what could have done that?” Hank asked.

Well, that started a discussion between the guys trying to guess what spooked these people. Turk, being Turk wanted to know the facts and decided the only way to learn them was to talk with one of the guys doing the running. So while the group was taking their guesses, Turk just stood up, walked way around the scouting area, walked up to the fast moving crowd. The guy he scooped up over his shoulder had to be one of the biggest in the crowd. “Okay, okay. A few months ago word came down that strange shit was happening all up north and east. Whole cities were going silent it seemed. Then a few people managed to make it to our city and told us about all the places of learning being destroyed including the libraries, women being taken away and young kids as well. We figured it was some foreign country come to mop up the mess we were all in and I don't think anybody took it all too seriously. The upper brass felt we were one of the strongest armies around and had pretty damn good weapons to handle any army that dared to come our way.

Same as you noticed, suddenly there were floods of people coming our way and none of them wanted to stay, just get some food and medical attention and off they ran. Nobody paid much attention at first, but it got worse week by week. Then they came.”

“Who came?” Turk asked.

“The invaders. Things from up there,” the man said pointing upward.

“We're being invaded by Canadians?” Steve asked.

“No, they're all gone already. Up there,” the man said pointing upward again.

“Wait, you talking about space aliens?” I asked.

“Yeah, space aliens,” the man said with some fear. “It was only one ship. Then they came down with their enforcers and heavy armor things, like big ass robots or something. The leaders I guess or commanders had one of them speak to us as they stood facing the city with their weird ass weapons pointed at us. He told us we were now a conquered race and no longer dominant on the planet. They came to take it over and we were only good for doing things they chose not to do. We were given hours to leave the city. If we didn't, we would be destroyed along with the city. We were to head southwest. We were told we had no choice. What was left of our race was being directed to locations predetermined to be best for containment until we were needed. The General began to protest and say things about our rights and stuff. Before he finished, the leader looked at one of his enforcers and pointed his finger at the General. After a bright flash, a pile of ashes was all that was left of the General. Nobody needed any more explanation after that for sure. Everyone just turned and began to run and get what they could and leave. A bunch of us soldiers were going around to make sure people were leaving when the aliens started to demolish the city starting at the University. Their ship fired some beams of bright light and the buildings began to explode and then nothing was standing. Their enforcers began shooting at other buildings and the same thing happened. Please, just let me go now, I have to join the others.”

Take out all the high tech, reduce every country to medieval times just about and then pop on down and mop it all up. They wear a helmet like an astronaut. The leaders are tall and skinny and their suite is like a bluish color. They have smaller weapons strapped on and different things on them. “My guess is the aliens will want revenge and will double up on patrolling the area after this. I feel for those guys if they get caught for sure,” Hank said.

Sure enough, 2 days later, we noticed more alien patrols going by and also alien craft flying overhead. That kept up for 2 more days and then it all stopped. Hank figured they either found the guys or realized they were looking in the wrong area. In either case, it was good news for us since it lessened the odds of us being captured.

After a few weeks, the flow of refugees stopped. No one was moving through at all and there were no longer any alien patrols either. Steve decided we should scout out towards the city to see if we could find out what was happening. It took some convincing but the others agreed. He and Hank headed out towards the city. We knew they would be gone at least 5 days if not more.

On the 7^th day, they came back to camp. Both of them were shaken.

“It was unreal what we saw,” Steve said. “Nothing was left, I mean nothing. No people, no buildings, just ashes all around.”

“They leveled the place completely,” Hank said taking a drink of our home made whiskey.

“Nothing at all?” Turk asked.

“Nothing at all. All ash nothing else,” Steve said taking a drink and shaking his head.

“Well, as sad as that is, at least the aliens aren't anywhere close by now,” Turk said.

“Who knows? Maybe they moved on to another city or something,” Steve said.

“Well, as for us, we should be thankful we didn't run into them and are safe,” Turk said. “Terrible what they did but we're okay.”

“Yeah, we are so far, but who knows for how long?” Hank said sadly. “Things are never going to be the same, that's for sure. Its a new world we are in and we don't own it anymore.”

That statement seemed to hit all of us hard since it was the truth. It was all going to be new from here on out and none of us knew what to expect.
