"Why did I agree to going to student council with you?" I asked as Charlotte and I stalked down the hallway.

"Honestly, today, I'm not sure." Charlotte said with very tired tone.

We made our way through the crowded halls with a bit of trepidation. Our plan to separate the undead squad didn't go as planned. Apparently, while I was escaping the vampires in the basement, Finn and Eva grew closer. It also slipped, via Lucas, that we were trying to separate them.

To say that Eva was pissed was a gross understatement. To our horror, she had distanced herself further from us. Part of me had become maddened by her distance but another part of me was relieved. A part of me wanted to let her go and say `she's not my problem'.

Charlotte took a different approach. A less tactful one.

"There's no way either of us is getting to her."

"Maybe." I said as we came upon Micah, "Or we could use better weapons."

"What's she doing here?" Charlotte asked.

"Down girl," I said looking to Micah, "She's going to help show Eva the truth."

"And, exactly what is the truth?" Charlotte asked.

"Those vampires are dangerous." Micah said with a dire expression on her face, "And once they get what they came for, we're all dead."

Chapter 9: Don't Look Back

"A spell?" Porter asked with a cautious expression, "If we could just do a spell, don't you think I'd have suggested it?"

"Maybe you don't know enough spells." Micah sniped.

I watched the two. Neither seemed fully trusting of the other. I could see why. We knew little about Micah, other than she helped me against the vampires in the basement. She seemed more than willing to help rid the town of vampires, though.

From the moment I informed Porter of our plan to unearth the truth, he was dead set against letting her do anything to help us. Micah seemed little more than indifferent.

"You want answers, right?" Micah asked. Porter looked between us and she began again, "Well, I have the spell and you have to do is recite the words and you pass out for a while and come back to a new world."

"That description doesn't help the trust part." I said slowly.

"So, one of us says the spell and goes under...what stops you from doing something horrible while we're asleep?" Porter asked.

"Hey, I can't figure everything out."

"I'll do it." Charlotte volunteered.

"What? No!" Porter snapped, "You're not the slightest bit supernatural. Who knows what can happen?"

"Nobody said we had to cast the spell on a supernatural being." Micah said casually as she began laying a salt circle. When she was done I could see that she had built a pentagram. Micah finished and looked back at us, "The spell isn't biased."

"Let me guess, `it just wants blood'?" I asked

"Not exactly." Porter said looking between us, "If done right, the gain is knowledge. If done wrong, the loss is...sanity."

"Excuse me?" Charlotte asked, "Be very specific."

"It's philosophy, blondie." Micah crossed the pentagram, "The ultimate gift is knowledge. But the man who knows everything, who understands everything, would supposedly be a madman. If you know everything, how truly screwed up the world is..."

"So, the backfire to this spell is ultimate knowledge?" I asked.

"Or what lies beyond." Porter answered, "It's worse than death and if anyone's going to do it, I will."

"No, I'll do it." Charlotte said nervously.

I shook my head, "Porter's right. There's too much risk."

"Yes, well, if I go crazy, I don't have magical powers. I can't blow up lamps." Charlotte argued.

I looked to Porter, who shrugged at me. Charlotte was dead set on doing this and she had a pretty good point. As I was about to refute her claims, my phone went off. I fished out my cell phone and read the name `Eva' on the screen. I quickly excused myself from them and answered the phone.

"Hello? Eva?" I asked into the phone.

"No exactly cupcake." Nora's voice said through the phone.

"Nora?" I asked as my eyes found the others, "Why do you have Eva's phone?"

"I don't think that's the question you want to ask."

"Do not hurt her." I said angrily.

"I won't. All you have to do is meet me, alone."

"Are we going to pretend that you're not going to try and kill me?" I asked.

"Scout's honor. Just killed one yesterday. My ancestral home. I'll leave a light on for you." Nora purred into the phone.

I ended the call and turned to them.

"You're not going." Porter was adamant.

Charlotte was right behind him, "He's right. We don't know anything about Nora." Her voice was full of concern.

"I don't think she wants to hurt me. If she wanted to do that, she would have."

"She has Eva?" Charlotte asked.

I nodded.

Charlotte looked to Porter, "He has to go. Nora may not want to kill Perry but I doubt she'll spare Eva." She said with a frown.

"I don't like this." Porter said, seemingly half-way in thought.

"Well, while you think about it, I'll be half way there." I said walking towards the door. Porter called out to me and I turned to him, "She's my friend! This mess, for whatever it's worth, has to do with the fact that we're witches. This is on me."

Porter stared at me, "Be careful." He nodded.

I nodded to him before leaving the house. I felt this overwhelming sense of dread in my gut. I could almost feel the bad things happening. I tried to deny the truth, that from the moment the vampires showed up, it was too late for us.

-

As I arrived at Nora, Lucas and Finn's estate, I was greeted by a sign on a rock pillar that read "Christianson Estate" and more than a few yards from the sign was the house in all its beauty. The house was old but charming. It had withstood time just fine.

The house was built out of grey bricks and stood around two stories tall. Ivy grew around the side of the house and lead to the well-manicured lawn. Though the estate was a sprawling ordeal, it looked manageable. Lucas' jaguar was parked out front, beside Finn's grey Denali.

I parked my car beside the Denali and stared up at the house. It was exactly what I expected their house to be on the outside: Large and imposing. I moved away from my car and up to the porch, taking note of the gigantic stone columns. I rapped on the door and waited for an answer. When no one answered, I rang the doorbell.

I was about to knock again when the door opened up and Lucas' dark glare landed on me. Finn and Eva stood further back. My eyes flickered between them.

"What do you want?" Lucas asked.

I was silent, trying to put together the situation. Eva was standing in front of me, not in the clutches of Nora. I could hear Luca's voice and then Finn and Eva's. They seemed to be further and further away. I took a step back and clutched onto the stone column. Lucas moved over and grabbed my arm, holding me up.

Nora used my loyalty and kindness against me. She led me here so that I wouldn't be at the witch house for the spell.

"Are you okay?" Eva's voice came to me with utter clarity.

"No." I croaked. I turned and ran to my car, immediately taking off down the road towards the Witch house.

o

As I entered the Witch house, I could feel the magic in the air. I bypassed the foyer but stopped in the living room, where the pentagram had been drawn. Three bodies lay in the pentagram, surrounded by a mass of blood. My heart sank as I stumbled over to my brother's body. I took his head in my hands as I sobbed uncontrollably.

My grandmother's face flashed across my face as I looked down at him. I could hear footsteps behind me but didn't turn to meet them. Lucas' voice caught my ears, as well as Eva's screams. I looked around again, taking note that Micah's neck had been snapped and that Charlotte's body was moving, breathing. Eva's figure moved to her and took her head into her hands.

"She's alive." Eva panted.
