Chapter 19 - The Surprise of a Lifetime

Saturday morning, March 24, 1990.  It was a beautiful day out and on top of

"No Arren, it's not a good idea," Dad said.  "It's very possible that there
are some diseases that can make you very sick.  You should take precautions,
especially with your health."

"Do you think that we should see a doctor, just to see if we are okay?"  I
asked.

"It might be a good idea if you do, but I don't know about Isaac," Dad said.
"We can take you to see a doctor, son, and get you tested for that type of
thing, but Isaac's Mom or Dad will have to take him to see his own doctor."

"I don't want my Mom or my Dad to find out that I'm gay," Isaac signed.  "I
heard my Dad say once, that he hates people that are gay.  If I tell them
that Arren and I are seeing each other, he'll blow his top."  I translated
what he signed for Dad.

"It's not up to me to tell them that you are gay, Isaac," Dad said.  "That's
something that you'll have to tell them yourself.  All I'm saying is that if
you and Arren want to be together, you'll need to use the condoms.  I don't
want either of you getting sick, because you did something out of the heat
of love."

"Maybe we can ask our doctor, if he can help us," Mom said.  "He has his
practice in the next town up."

"Do you think that he'll test Isaac too, without telling his parents?"  I
asked.

"I don't know Arren," Mom said.  "We can ask him and if he'll help us.  If
he will, then we can get Isaac tested too."

All I could do was give Mom and Dad a big hug.  Isaac hugged them too and
then he gave them both a big kiss, because he was so happy.  Mom and Dad
were happy to help, but how much they could help would remain to be seen.

After breakfast, Dad called our family doctor, and informed him of our
discussion.  Doctor Anderson just does family practice and things like that.
Mom and Dad, even Grandpa and Grandma go and see Doctor Anderson when
they need to.  He told us to come down to his office by ten this morning and
he'll take care of everything, no questions asked.  I was glad that Dad
didn't call Doctor Webster.  I really didn't want him to know too much about
me, especially when I just thought about what Tony and I did with Ben.  This
also meant that Isaac and I would have to get dressed.  Isaac didn't want
to, but we did.  Isaac also didn't want to wear his leg braces, so I was
just going to have to hold on to him.  I knew that he hated it when I held
him, but I'm sure he'll get over it.  He looked at me, smiled and then just

Dad took both Isaac and I to see Doctor Anderson at the time that he said to
meet him.  Since this was Saturday, his office was closed, but he was
waiting for us and let us in.  Dad talked to the doctor for awhile, before
we went into the examination room.  Dad told him everything that he needed
to know about us.  Doctor Anderson told us, that there wasn't going to be
any record of what he was going to do.  He told us that he would call us
with the results in about three or four days.  Then Doctor Anderson took
some blood from both Isaac and me.  He didn't put our names on the vials, he
just wrote a number on them.

We were in the doctor's office for about an hour the whole time we were
there.  Dad and Doctor Anderson were still talking, as I was helping Isaac
out to the car.  Dad came out about five minutes later and then we headed
for home.  Isaac and I sat in the front with Dad and Isaac just hugged Dad,
to thank him for helping him and me.  I gave Dad a very special hug when we
got home.  Mom asked if everything went okay and we told her that we would

Before long, Karen was getting ready to leave.  She gave all of us hugs and

carried him up the stairs.  We did what we needed to do in the bathroom and

Mom and Dad both said happy birthday to me with big smiles on their faces

still very nice.  It's a 1986 Corvette and we want you and Isaac to be able

Mom and Dad so tight, that I thought I'd squeeze the air out of them.  Then

also wanted to hug Ellen, but she would be here in a few minutes with the

hugged everyone again.

Now, because I didn't have my drivers license yet.  Dad told me that I could
take a little trip down the road a few miles.  I just had to hug him again,
so I did.  Then I just hugged everyone else and then got back in the car.  I
started the engine, told Isaac to buckle up and then adjusted the mirrors so
I could use them.  Then I drove slowly down the driveway.  Isaac was so
happy, that he signed, "I love you Arren".  I told him that I loved him more
and he just smiled.  We got on the State Highway and we headed south.  I
drove for about two miles, before we came to the little restaurant that we
had breakfast in.  I turned around and headed for home again.  This was so
cool and I had MY Isaac with me to share it with.

The car handled great and it had a very nice interior too.  It was blue and
I know that Isaac likes blue.  I like it too, but it was even better with

drove.  I saw where I had to turn and headed down our little road to the
house.  Gordon and Dad were outside waiting for us.  Mom was in the house

Dad asked me how the car drove and I told him it was great, and then hugged
both him and Gordon again.  Then I helped Isaac out of the car.  Dad told me
that he would take me down tomorrow, so I could take my driving test.  I
didn't say anything I just hugged him.  I wanted to Isaac to come as well
and Dad said that he could.  Gordon was happy that I was able to drive now,
because he told me that Isaac told him, that he hates the bus that he takes.
He said that I could drive him to school if I wanted to.  I told him, if I
pass my driving test tomorrow, I would drive him everyday.  Gordon just
smiled at me and I liked the way he did.  He has a very nice smile.

Isaac and Gordon, with Dad, were showing me all the neat things that the car
had.  I just held onto Isaac while everyone talked about the car.  Isaac
could see that I was very happy and gave me a little hug.  Mom and Ellen
came out after a few minutes to look at the car also, but women really don't
care about things like guys do.  Do they?  Mom was telling me to be VERY
careful when I was driving.  I told her that I would do my very best and I
told all of them, that I was going to be extra careful with Isaac in the
car.  Everyone just smiled and I could see that Isaac was even happier then
me.  I still wanted to kiss him, but well you know.

After about thirty minutes, we went into the house and we were talking about
this and that.  All of us had a very nice time.  I even got a special phone
call from Ronald.  Mom and Dad told him about the car, before I even knew
about it myself.  He was very happy for his little brother and said that he
is looking forward to riding in it.  I told him that I would like to come
down and pick him up and bring him home now.  He told me the he'll be
graduating in 1991.  I couldn't wait, only one more year and I'll have my
big brother home with us.  I told Isaac all about MY big brother and he
seemed to want to meet him.  I know that Ronald wants to meet the boy that I
love too.  Mom and Dad told him all about us and what has been going on with

Isaac's Mom and Dad stayed for dinner and then we had some cake.  Grandpa
and Grandma came over too.  I was very happy that everyone that I love is
here with me.  The only thing that I would have really liked is if my
Grandma made the cake.  The cake that Ellen got wasn't all that good.  It
was okay, for a store bought cake, but I love my Grandmas' better.

Gordon and Ellen said that it would be okay, for Isaac to stay the night.
Tomorrow morning Dad would take us down and I could take my driving test.
Dad told me, that he made the appointment about a week ago.  It is on a
school day, but we would only miss third and forth periods.  Dad said that
this was the only time that we'd be able to do it, this soon.  I just hugged

them.  But he was very happy for me today, because I was going to take my
driving test.  Dad said that he would go with us and then take the car and
gas it up.  He would do a few things around town, until it was time to come

I drove us to school and then Dad took the car and drove off.  A few other
kids were looking at us and just had to ask me about the car.  The car is
still very nice, even though it's four years old.  Dad told me later that it

First and second period went by pretty fast today and then Isaac and I went
to meet Dad.  He was waiting for us and then he told me to drive us to the
DMV.  We didn't have to wait to long before the woman who was going to give
me my test, came out.  She wanted to give me the test by myself and this
meant that Dad and Isaac had to stay behind.  Isaac was a little
disappointed, but he just signed, "Good luck Arren, I love you", and then
waited with Dad.

The instructor and I got in the car.  She just sat there and look at me.  I
asked her to put on her seatbelt and then she wrote something down in a
book.  She then smiled at me and said that I was the first person to tell
her to put on the seatbelt in a long time.  I guess I just made a few
points.  I adjusted the mirrors and then she told me where to drive.  I put
the car in drive and off we went.  The test took about thirty minutes for me
to complete.  She had me do hill side parking and things like that.  I think
I did okay, but she told me a few things that would help me to become a
better driver.

When we got back to the DMV, she said that I did VERY well.  I got my driver
license.  I was very happy.  So was Dad and especially Isaac.  We went
inside and they took my picture and a thumbprint.  They gave me a temporary
license until they mailed me my original one.  This was just so great and I
could see that Isaac was even happier.

I drove us back to school and again Dad told me that he would be here to
pick us up.  I told Isaac that I would drive him home everyday for now on
and I told him to be looking for me, to pick him up in the morning.  He just
gave me the biggest smile that he could.  Oh man, do I love him, more now
then ever.  I'm sure he was very happy that he didn't have to take the bus.
I was happy that I didn't have to as well.  I was going to be very careful,
with MY Isaac in the car.  He is just so dear to me and I do not want
anything to happen to him, or for that matter, me too.  I really don't want
to end up in the hospital again.  I really don't think that Mom or Dad could
handle that.  If Isaac or me were killed, I just don't think Mom and Dad
could live with that.  I was just going to be very careful when I drove.

At the end of the day, Dad was here waiting for us.  Dad said that he wanted
to sit in the back, so that Isaac could sit up front with me.  I can't
believe how much I love Dad, he is always thinking of me first.  One of
these days I'll think of a way to repay him for being such a great father.
I would also do something for Mom and Isaac's parents too.  Grandpa and
Grandma, will be included as well, I love them very much too.

When we got to Isaac's house, I gave him a little hug and helped out of the
car.  Dad just waited for me until I made sure he was in the house okay.
Ellen was home and helped him when he got inside.  Gordon was out for a
little while and wouldn't be home for a few more hours.  I told Ellen that I
would be here to pick up Isaac tomorrow morning, so that he didn't have to
take the bus.  She was happy that Isaac was happy, but she went on to tell
me to be very careful with him in the car.  I promised her that I would be
very careful with him.  Isaac just smiled at us.  I think she suspects that
we might more then just very good friends, but she didn't say anything.  I
gave MY Isaac a little hug goodbye and then went outside, got in the car and
then drove home.

When Dad and I got home.  Mom was busy in the kitchen making a very special
dinner for me.  She was very proud that I passed my driving test.  Even
Grandpa and Grandma came over to congratulate me.  I just gave them all big
hugs to thank them.  Dad and Grandpa were telling me to be extra careful in
that kind of car.  They told me that the police look for any reason to pull
over a young kid driving a car like that.  I told them that I was going to
be super careful, especially with MY Isaac in the car.

After dinner, Dad and I went outside to wash and wax the car.  It was still
in very good condition, with just a few little scratches near the bottom,
where a little rock might have hit it over time.  Dad told me that the
license and insurance was paid up for the first year.  He then told me that
his name was also on the registration until I was eighteen years old.  Then
he would sign it over to Isaac and me.  He told me that Gordon was going to
put his name on it too, but said that it would be okay for it to be in Dad's
name.  When we finished up, Dad and I just looked at our work.  That car
looked very nice and I could hardly wait to go and get MY Isaac in the
morning.

The next morning I woke a little earlier so that I could get Isaac before
school started.  I know that he lives about twenty miles away and I would
have to leave right after breakfast was over.  Mom and Dad again told me to
be very careful while I drove over to Isaac's house.  I made them a promise,
that I would do my very best to be careful.  They knew that I would try to
be very careful.  I gave them both BIG hugs and then headed for the car.
Dad came out; just to make sure that I did everything right.  I know that he
loves me very much, but... I put on my seatbelt and started it up.  Dad
watched me as I drove slowly down the driveway.  I really think that he is
proud of me, but I also think that he still wants his little baby boy back
in his arms.

It took me about twenty five minutes to get to Isaac's house.  He saw me
coming and came out to see me.  Gordon and Ellen came out too.  I parked as
close to the front door as I could, so that MY Isaac didn't have to walk to
far.  Gordon and Ellen were very happy that I was going to pick him up and
take him to school every day.  I told them that I was more then happy to do
this for him.  Gordon was very happy that I passed my driving test, and then
gave me some money for gas.  I told him that I had a full tank, but he
wouldn't take the money back.  He told me that we'll need more gas someday
and when we do need it, we'll have the money.  I just gave him a hug and
thank him.  I really think he likes more now.  Isaac gave his Mom and Dad a
hug too and then I helped Isaac into the car.  I made sure that he was
comfortable and then he put his seatbelt on.  Gordon told me to drive
careful and then we made our way out of the driveway.  Isaac was very happy
and signed that he loved me very much.  I told him that I love him more.  He
just smiled at me, while I drove us to school.

The students that drive their own cars park in a little different place then
the teachers.  I found a little place to park by the Tennis Courts.  I shut
off the engine and then Isaac undid his seatbelt.  I undid mine too and then
took the key out, so I could lock it up.  I got out so I could help Isaac
out of the car.  I made very sure that it was locked up and then Isaac and I
started for our first period class.

We were here a lot earlier than we normally were, so we just took our time
walking slowly and enjoying the warm spring morning.  We were walking by
some tall plants that were between the Tennis Courts and the Girls Gym, when
Isaac and I came across something that stopped us in our tracks.  We were
not talking; we were just signing to each other.  We were being very quiet
and the next thing that happened was something that I know really didn't
want to be caught.  We were then watching two girls kissing each other,
thinking that they were safely hidden from view.  When one of the girls saw
us, it looked like she wanted to die, right then and there.  Then the other
girl saw us and then they knew that they were caught.

Isaac and I just smiled at them and continued walking to our first period
class.  The girls came out of the bushes and just looked at us.  We both
smiled again and continued walking.  I don't think that they knew that we
were gay too, but we really didn't care.  We were very happy for them and we
wish them all the best.  We didn't tell them that though, we just thought
about it.  They just watched us as we walked away, with looks on their faces
that were very cute.  After we were out of their sight, Isaac and I both
started to laugh.  I don't think those girls knew how lucky they were to be
caught by us and not by someone who would make a really big deal about it.
I told Isaac in signs that we should be even more careful, with how we act.
He just nodded his head, yes, and then we continued to class.

After Isaac and I had lunch, we were going to sit outside, until the bell
would ring.  We sat on a bench by the library, all by ourselves, when those
two same girls came up to us.  These girls are also in their freshman year
of High School.  They are very pretty girls and I can see why they love each
other.  If I were not a homosexual myself, I would love to have a girlfriend
like them.  I was wondering if Isaac was thinking the same thing that I was.
I'll have to ask him about it a little later.  I think first, these girls
wanted to talk to us.  I was wondering what was on their minds.  Like I
really had to ask.

"Excuse us," said the first girl.  "Can we talk to you guys for a few
minutes?"

"Sure," I said with a smile.  I looked at Isaac; he had even a bigger smile.
I wanted to just kiss him, but I held back and try to act serious.  "Please
sit."  They both smiled, and sat next to us.  I was in the middle and I kept
Isaac on my right, so he would have me close.

"We just wanted to know if you said anything to anyone about what you saw?"
Asked the first girl.

"No, why should we care if you two love each other?"  I asked.

"You mean you didn't say anything to anyone?"  Asked the second girl.

"Nope," I said.  "It's none of our business what you two do."

"Thank you," said the first girl.

"If you don't mind me asking," I said.  "Could you tell us your names?  You
don't have to, if you don't want to."

"No, that's okay, I'm Sandra Bishop," Sandra said.

"And I'm Paula Nelson," Paula said.

"We're glad to meet you," I said.  "I'm Arren Porter, and this is Isaac
Eagleton.  Isaac would tell you his name, but he can't talk."

"Oh yeah," Sandra said.  "I heard about you, Isaac.  I heard about all of
those baskets that you made awhile back."  Isaac just smiled.  "Your pretty
cute, did you know that?"

Isaac just blushed, and turned his head away from her.  It was very cute
when he did that.  He held onto me and I held onto him.  I signed to Isaac,
if he wanted me to tell the girls that we were gay too.  He just smiled and
signed, if I wanted to, it was okay with him.  I didn't like lying to people
and then I decided to tell them that we were gay too.

"I think Isaac is very cute too," I said, and then gave him a little hug.

"Are you two a couple as well?"  Asked Paula.

"Yes," I said.  "Isaac and I are gay and we are in love."

"I think that is so cute," Sandra said, smiling big.  "We have been intimate
with each other for about a year and a half now.  How long have you two been
together?"

"We met on the first day of school," I told them.  "We have been getting
closer every day since."

We continued talking for awhile, before Sandra wanted to talk to Paula in
private.  They excused themselves and walked off a little ways and started
talking about something.  I'm sure it was about us, but we didn't know what
they were talking about.  Isaac was getting a little worried that something
was going to happen.  I told him that I would do what I could to keep him
safe.  He just gave me a little smile and then held my hand a little
tighter.  Then the girls came back and sat down, so they could tell us what
they talked about.

"We talked, and we would like to ask you two a favor," Sandra said.

"What kind of favor?"  I asked.  I looked at Isaac and I could see that he
was more worried now.

"We are, as you may have guessed, are gay too," Sandra said.  "We are not
looking for boyfriends and there are a lot of boys in this school that want
us to be their girlfriends.  We don't want others to think that we are gay,
so we would like to know if you two would be our boyfriends.  We are sure
that you don't people to think that you two are gay as well."

"No, not really," I said.  "We don't need any hassles in our lives, but I
don't know about this."

"Look," Sandra said.  "You don't have to do anything that will make you guys
feel uncomfortable.  We just want others to think that we got boyfriends, so
that the other boys in this school will stop hitting on us.  We know that
after awhile, there will be talk about us and we really don't want that."

"We don't either," I said.  "But I'm not the only one in this relationship.
I would need to talk to Isaac."

"Do you want us to step away?"  Paula asked.

"Can you two read sign language?"  I asked.  They looked at each other, and
then both said, no, shaking their heads at the same time.  "Then you two
don't need to leave.  I talk to Isaac in signs."

"Okay," Sandra said.

I started to sign to Isaac about what we just heard.  I asked him if he
wanted to do something like this.  Isaac told me that he doesn't want to
kiss them, he only wants me.  I told him that I only love him and that this
would make sure that others who might think we were gay wouldn't pick on us.
Isaac had a look on his face, which looked like he was considering this.
Then he asked me if we would have to go on things like Dates.  That was a
good question and I told him that we should ask more questions before we
agreed to any of this.

"Isaac and I talked a little," I said to the girls.  "He wants to know if we
would have to go out with you two?"

"We just want to have boyfriends in school only, nothing more," Sandra said.

"Yeah," Paula added.  "We are not looking for boys to have sex with.  We
don't need boys for that."  Then she smiled at Sandra, really big.

Sandra started to giggle a little.  "She's right.  We do have each other,
just like you two have each other.  We just want to get all of the other
boys out of our lives, so that we can be together."

"Do we have to hang around each other ALL the time when we are in school?"
I asked.

"No," Paula said.  "We just thought, that we just have lunch and go to some
of the school rallies together.  You know things like that?"

Isaac was tapping me on the shoulder; he wanted to tell me something.  He
told me, as long as we can be together as much as we like.  Then, it would
be okay for the girls to do what they wanted to do.  They really were not
looking for a long-term commitment, so he said this might work out okay for
all of us.  I knew that I loved him, but he really does surprise me from
time to time.  He then just gave me a great big smile.  I just gave him a
little hug and signed that I loved him.

"Okay," I said.  "We'll do it.  We'll be your unofficial boyfriends."  Then
Isaac and I smiled at them.

"Thank you guys," Sandra said.  "This will really help us out, and we'll not
bother you about little things."

"Okay," I said.

We talked for the rest of lunch, getting to know each other better.  We
found out, that the girls only live about five blocks away from the school,
so they don't take the bus.  They have also known each other for about ten
years too, so they were not only lovers, but the best of friends too.  Each
girl lives three houses away from each other as well.  Not only that, but
they were right on the way to Isaac's house.  Isaac and I talked a little
more about this and we both agreed to take them home, when we could.  We
thought this would really tell everyone that we were no longer available.
We told our new girlfriends this too and they thought this would workout
just fine.  We also told them, that we could drive them home too, if they
wanted.  They were happy and excepted our offer.  We told them that our car
was over by the Tennis Courts, and we'll be there after school.  They said
that we were two of the nicest boys that they have ever met and thanked the
two of us.

The bell rang and then we had to leave.  Sandra and Paula both gave us hugs
and headed off to their next class.  I never seen any of them in my classes
and was wondering if any of them were in any of our classes.  I always just
looked at boys and never really thought about looking at girls much.  I told
Isaac as we were heading for our next class, that I was going to see if they
were in any of our classes.  He just smiled at me, as we continued for our
next class.

When the last bell of the day rang.  Isaac and I made our way out to the
parking lot were we left the car.  The girls were not here, so I got ready
to go.  I helped Isaac in the car, before we saw the girls coming.  I had to
wave to them, so they could see where we were parked.  When they saw the
car, they couldn't believe that we were driving a car like this.  I
explained that it was a gift from our parents and we were very grateful for
it.  They were very happy that we were going to take them home, but I asked
them, if it would be okay for them to sit in the back.  I already had Isaac
in the car and had his seatbelt on.  Besides, it's not that easy for him to
get in and out of the car, with his leg braces on.  They were more then
happy to sit in the back.  I think it was so that they could be close to
each other.

After everyone was settled, I made our way out of the parking lot.  The
girls told me were to go and we were there in no time.  It is right on the
way to Isaac's house, so we didn't have to drive out of the way.  I asked
the girls if they wanted us to pick them up tomorrow and they said that they
didn't know when they would be ready.  They told us to not worry about
picking them up.  We can work that out a little later.  I thought this was
just fine and I helped them out.  Again, they gave me a hug and thanked us
both again.  Isaac just sat in the car, and smiled.  Then we watched the
girls go off to one of their homes.  I didn't know who lived in that one,
but I'm sure we'll learn more about them, as we get to know them more.

I continued to take Isaac home.  I drove slowly, so that we could be
together for as long as possible.  When we got to Isaac's house, I helped
him out and into the house.  Ellen was home and asked us how things went
today.  Isaac told her that we met two very nice girls today and that they
might be our girlfriends.  Ellen just smiled and said that she was happy for
us.  I was happy too, but I didn't like the thought that we didn't tell her
everything that really happened.  Isaac just didn't want his Mom and Dad to
think that he was gay, but I think his mother already knew that we were.

I stayed as long as I could before I had to leave myself.  I gave MY Isaac a
little hug and told him that I would be here bright and early tomorrow
morning.  He just gave me a very cute smile and signed that he loved me.
His mother didn't see him do that.  I just gave him another little hug and
whispered in his ear, that I loved him too.  He just smiled and said to
drive carefully and he'll see me tomorrow.  I wanted him to stay with me, or
want to stay with him, but I knew that I had to go.  I made my way to the
car, and then I was off.

When I got home, Mom and Dad asked me how everything went.  I told them that
the car worked okay and then I told them everything about what happened with
Sandra and Paula.  Mom was happy that we were making new friends, but she
told me to be careful so that nobody gets hurt.  She said that even though
we were just trying to help, it could go wrong, and people's feelings can
get hurt.  Dad also said that we should be careful and told me that I have a
very kind heart for trying to help them.  I know that they were just trying
to help, and I just had to hug them for it.

I was thinking about what they told me, and I was going to make extra sure
that Isaac was okay too.  He is more important to me that anything else
right now and I will not let him feel that he has to do this, just to make
me happy.  I'll talk to him tomorrow and I'll make sure he's okay.

As I was getting ready for bed later on that evening, I was just so happy
that I have the people in my life that I love very much.  I just hope that
everything goes okay for Sandra and Paula too.  I really do like them and I
really hope that we become really good friends.  We'll just have to wait and
see how things turn out.  But seeing those girls kissing today, made me
think of Stacy again.  I was wondering if Isaac ever thought about having a
girlfriend himself.  That's another thing I'll ask him about too.  Maybe we
can do more then be just friends.
