Chapter 7: So we dragged our sorry asses out of bed, and washed up, Caleb got changed into some very short grey rugby league shorts and a light blue T shirt with a surf design on the back; whereas I had to get back into the suit I had worn yesterday because I hadn't bought a change of clothes. It felt weird walking down the main street of town dressed in my number ones, especially on this golden hot summer's day. Having Caleb walking with me holding my hand made it a lot more pleasant trip than it would have been otherwise. I was glad to get home to say the least and strip off the suit, and then I put it aside to get dry-cleaned whenever mum got the chance. Then walking to my room naked I got some clothes, I found some of those very short league shorts in my draws but mine were black, but I decided to put them on to match my little angel, then I pulled out a similar top to the one he was wearing and put it on, we were almost a matching couple, then I quickly collected my school gear and we walked back down the road to Caleb's house, hand in hand. The rest of the day we lay on the couch, and it was at this stage I realised the benefits to these shorts as I could easily reach under through the leg hole and fondle the little boy's package, which was made even easier with the fact that Caleb wasn't wearing any underwear. ************ I slowly started to manipulate the boys foreskin up and down, covering and uncovering his glands, I could feel his prick responding to my touch and boning up, Caleb let out a soft moan which I quickly tried to stifle by covering his mouth with my other hand, and continued to slowly jack him off, right there on the couch in the living room with his dad not far away doing something in the kitchen. As I kept the manipulation of his little penis up, he was getting harder and harder to hold because he was squirming too much, I also had to try and clamp my hand over his mouth harder in order to stop him making any sound, somehow I managed to keep him under control and managed to keep his mouth clamped shut enough. After a little while of jacking his little boyhood I felt him go tense and he lifted his butt clear off the seat, I could feel his balls contract under the light petting is was giving them by my fingers, and he tried to scream through his hand covered mouth. "Humph, Humph, ahhh, ohhhh , ahhh, jeezeus, my fucking god," he squealed, it could only just be heard as the boy experienced a tremendous orgasm, but I had covered he mouth sufficiently enough that I was pretty sure dad hadn't heard, I slowly released my grip on both the boy's quickly softening little pecker, and his mouth when I thought it was safe to do so. I then pulled the leg of his short shorts back down to cover his package, just after I had done that dad poked his head around and saw us boys snuggling, but noticed that Caleb was looking a bit flushed and breathing heavily, he was also glowing in the light and he was sweating like a pig. He saw Dan look at him and all he could do was smile and shack his head at the boy. I was a bit bemused about it as I suddenly realised that dad had worked out what I had just done, and as I looked down at Caleb I could tell why, but oh well he wasn't angry with me. As Caleb started to open his eyes again having recover sufficiently, I just whispered into the boys ear that I just wanted to say thank you for everything he had done for me yesterday, admitting to Caleb that I couldn't have got through the day without him, Caleb just turned so he was facing me, and gave me a passionate kiss on the lips before whispering thank you back. The afternoon passed us by and we hadn't moved from the couch, it was just one of those days where I couldn't be bothered doing anything and Caleb was the same, yesterday had been so long and busy for us that we were still feeling the effects from it all afternoon, dad had even asked us if we wanted a cooking lesson but realised we were too tired and decided just to cook up an easy meal for tea. That was macaroni cheese which we enjoyed but unsurprisingly was not up to dads usual high standards but I suppose even he deserves to have a lazy day every once in a while. After tea dad told us he would clean up and that Caleb should pack his school bag, then we should go to bed, which even at our age did straight away with no arguments, even though it was still really early, we were just that tired that bed sounded like the best place to be. So Caleb got all his stuff ready for school in the morning and then we stripped off and crawled into bed, we were fast asleep by the time dad came to tuck us in. Dad had to wake us up in the morning because we were still sleeping when it was past time to get up, realising we didn't have much time we rushed our shower and threw on some clothes before grabbing our school stuff and rushing downstairs and out the door, dad waited at the bottom of the stairs for us and handed us our lunch, as we blew past, telling us to have a good day at school. Thankfully the bus stop was only 100 meters down the road and we got there with a bit of time to spare. There were three other kids waiting at the stop two boys aged 5 -6, and a girl around 8. So we stood by ourselves a couple of meters from where the others were standing. It was now I noticed what Caleb was wearing, he had blue board shorts and a yellow T-shirt on, the problem was in the rush to get changed he had his shirt inside out, I told him and he quickly took off his shirt and turned it around the right way before putting it back on. Thankfully he had put white socks with a blue band round the top, and his reef skate shoes on his feet; he would have gotten in big trouble if he didn't have proper shoes on. I had put a blue and white cotton, short sleeve, button-up shirt on with blue knee length surf style shorts, with black ankle socks and globe skate shoes on my feet, neither of us had anything flash on but hey we were only going to school. I saw the bus coming down the road, well I shouldn't really use the term bus, it was a ten seated white, pretty beat up van, it was quite old somewhere from the late 80's, but it was really only a rural school, and there weren't many kids at this end to pick up, so it was ample big enough. Driving the bus was a plumpish elderly woman she was somewhere in her 50's, she had shortish grey curly hair, blue eyes and a fat round nose, she was a sweet woman, but could be really hardnosed if she had to be. The women was a teacher at the school, her name is Mrs Milner and she teaches the year 7 class meaning that she would be Caleb's teacher for the year. The bus finally pulled up and we hoped in, but as we got on Mrs Milner greeted us. "Hello Dan and you must be my new student... Caleb isn't it," she said in her usual friendly voice. "Hello Mrs Milner, and yes this is Caleb," I said confirming what she already knew. "Thank you Dan, but what are you doing getting on at this stop, I usually pick you up at the other end of town don't I?" she said, but there was something in her voice that sort of suggested she was expecting something different of me today, she had been my bus driver since I started going to school, so we knew each other pretty well. "Yeah normally I do, but when mum isn't in town I sleep at Caleb's house now," I was only really confirming what she had suspected, but I still hadn't cottoned on to what she knew, well not yet anyway. "Well I suspect I will be picking you up a lot from here then, its good seeing you again, and it's good to meet you Caleb, but could I ask you boys to stay around after we get to school, as there is something I want to talk to you about" and with that she turned around, and put the van in gear, so we knew we didn't have any say I the matter, and the conversation was over. Caleb and I took the backseat, me knowing there no kids older than us who get picked up on this bus so the backseat was free for us, and the little boys took the front, with the girl deciding to sit on her own in the middle, with everyone on board one of the little boys in front slammed the door closed and we headed off. There were only two other stops the bus made, the first one is at the other end of town, which is usually the one I catch the bus from, only one kid got on there a boy around 7. The next stop was about halfway to school where two kids get on a girl about 7, and a boy about 12 his name was Chris, the boy was one of my friends so came and sat with us in the back. He was a scruffy looking kid, had no pride in his appearance, his curly golden blonde was about neck height, and didn't look like it had ever seen a comb, he had brown eyes a skinny long nose, and was wearing a dirty white shirt under blue overalls which didn't look like they had been washed since they left the store, but he was a nice person, and the sort of friend who would do anything for you. I introduced him to Caleb and they seemed to hit it off pretty well, damn when I first met Caleb he didn't trust anyone, how times have changed, after what felt like an eternity we finally made it to school. Mrs Milner is a really cautious driver, so even though she picked us up at 7:30 it took till 8:45 to get here, whereas with anyone else the trip would only have taken 45 minutes to an hour max. We pulled into the school gate and the other kids disembarked and made their way to their respective area's to either play or just hang out. Chris jumped out then turned round and asked if we were coming, I told him that Mrs Milner wanted to see us and we would catch up later, so off he went. "Well boys, the first thing I want to say is welcome to another school year, but the reason I wanted you to stay behind is to firstly, congratulate you Dan on that great exhibition you had yesterday, I never realised you were such a great artist," She said in warm friendly manner. "Thank you Miss, I didn't even know I was that good myself till earlier in the week," I said glowing in pride that she had thought my art was good. "I have also noticed, especially after hearing your speech that you look a lot happier, and I know that you are the main reason for that Caleb, so I thank you, and I have to say that you two make a great couple," she said all this with such a straight face that I hadn't picked up on what she had said straight away, and Caleb hadn't either, he was just smiling from ear to ear from the compliment, but he had realised first because all of a sudden he blush a very bright red, that's when I clicked. "Shit, Opps.. Uh sorry Miss, I hadn't even thought about the prospect of someone from school being there, and Caleb had helped me through a tough time that day, and it... was all... I could do... at the time... to repay him," I was stuttering really badly by the end from the embarrassment of a teacher knowing, but also the fear of whether one of the kids at school had also been there. "I will forget about your little swear, and don't fret too much, as once I had noticed how close you two were I did pay more attention to who was in the crowd, and other than me, and the principal there was no one else from school who was there, I have talked to the principal and he won't say anything, although he wants to congratulate you in the school assembly, but we both want to warn you to be careful about how you display your affection while at school, because it would upset the two of us if anything happened to either of you, because you are both such special kids," she was good, as this all came from the depth of her heart, and neither of us felt anymore embarrassment, we were almost happy that she knew, I had said that she was a kind hearted lady, and this just proves what I meant. "Thank you Miss, and don't worry we will keep our feelings under control, if it hadn't have been for the emotional aspect of yesterday, well you probably wouldn't have noticed because we normally keep our feelings under control in public," I said as I slipped out the van knowing that the bell was about to go, so she wouldn't have anything else to say. "Yes Miss thank you for being so kind, I look forward to you teaching me this year, and I know it will be the best year of school I have ever had," Caleb said sincerely in that sweet angelic voice that just makes your heart melt, and I could see that Mrs Milner had fallen under the boy's spell too. "OK boys you better go, and Caleb don't be late to class or else," she said in a stern teachers voice, but the huge smile on her face said that he would probably get away with being late, for today at least. Sure enough as soon as we exited the van the bell rung, so we had to run to get to the assembly on time this was in the school hall inside the old two storey block. The school hall is small in comparison to most school halls, but there was only about 280 kids that attend, and about 210 of the children that go here are years 1 – 7, and most of the rest are between years 7 – 10, as after that most head to the city for their final and most important years of high school, as the school really isn't catered for them due to the small role, and those that do continue their education here only do so because they are going to take over the family farm, or something similar so really don't have anything much to gain from going to the city for the last years of school. The assembly was really only a formal welcome to all the new students and a welcome back to all the old ones, but there was a special ceremony honouring my art, and also paying special attention to how my exhibit was going, and the principal told all students that if they got the chance they should go a see it because it might inspire them into the world of art. At the end of the assembly they formally welcomed Caleb, as it's not often we get a student from another school start here especially one who is already about halfway through school, and then we were released to go to class. School was really slack as it usually is on the first day back; most of the time was spent getting to know your teacher or teachers, and the teachers telling us a brief description of what we were going to learn this year. During the first break I got the chance to introduce Caleb to the rest of my friends, that didn't take long as I only hung around with three, four now Caleb has joined the group, I'm not saying that I'm unpopular, because being a small school everybody knows everybody else, and we all tend to get along, but most of the kids are into doing the sort of stuff that I'm not allowed to do to my condition, so I hang round with, well essentially the geeks. They aren't geeks though, as Chris is really into wake boarding, and fishing, while the other two get into BMX racing, and mountain biking, it's that they just don't like things like rugby, or soccer which all the other kids want to play, so we just hang around. The two of my friends that get into the cycling, are aged 14, and 12. The 14 year old is Tim, he is about 5 ft. 1, and really big and muscular, almost intimidating with his stature, his face is big and round, with a black mop on top that was his hair, he had a large nose that make his brown eyes seem small in proportion, and has a smile that well looks menacing, but inside he is just a big softy, he literally wouldn't hurt a fly as he's not into violence, and is a nature lover too. The other boy Luke as I said is 12, stands about 4 ft. 7, is medium build but also very muscular like Tim, he is also starting to show the early signs of having entered puberty, he was defiantly more into that stage than I was, as his legs were starting to get hairs on them. He had very short blonde hair, an average sized nose which set off the deep blue eyes beautifully. He was the aggressive one of the group, and was getting into trouble a bit, but if he liked you, then you would never have any problems, he is a very loyal person, not judgemental either which made telling him things not so intimidating. The rest of school went real quick and before I realised I was back on the bus heading home, with Caleb buzzing beside me, he had just had the best day of school in his life, well that is what he told me, Chris was also sitting with us in the backseat of the van again. "Damn I didn't notice this morning but Caleb your real cute, oops I hope you don't take that the wrong way," Chris had whispered so the rest in the van didn't hear him, Caleb just smiled but also gave him a flirty look, that made me a little jealous, except I knew that he really didn't mean anything by it, he was just teasing his new friend. "Thanks for such a nice comment, but sorry I'm already taken," Caleb joked but had a serious tone in his voice at the same time, which made me almost crack up in laughter, but thankfully I kept myself under control as otherwise all the kids on the bus would be looking at us. "Chris I suppose there is something I... I mean we should tell you, I know my secret will be safe with you because I have kept your secret but its time it all came out, Chris is gay Caleb, but you probably had already guessed that, and Chris... ummm... well me and Caleb are... well... sort of... what's the word... I suppose, `together' will do," I was stammering in front of him, but for the life of me I don't know why. "Ahhh, you're so lucky to have such a cute friendly young man... but when did you know you were... well gay" for some reason even though he was already whispering so quietly that it was almost impossible to hear him, he whispered the word gay even softer, to the extent that I only knew what he had said because I could read his lips. So I told him our storey, with the help of Caleb, and all through the storey I could see that Chris was getting jealous, but in a good way, he was happy for us, he just wished he could find that special person for himself, after a while I thought it best to change the subject just in case someone decided to eavesdrop. "So Chris are you going to compete in archery again this year?" I asked hoping he was. "Nah why would I want to play such a pussy sport," he joked, then added. "Of course you moron I want to kick butt again this year," he stated this as he got up as the van had stopped at his stop, and neither one of us had realised how quick time had gone, so we quickly said our goodbyes and were off again. Well I suppose I should explain a bit more about the reason our school is so big on archery. It all started when I started school, as there were no sports that were recommended by the doctor's that I could participate in at school, and because I can't get involved in contact sports I was sort of an outcast at lunch and break. So during the next regular visit to the doctor I asked him for a list of recommended sports that I could do, he gave me the list and I wrote off some of them due to lack of facilities at school such as swimming, as school doesn't have a swimming pool, and I wrote some off, because at 5, I wasn't interested in them like running, and all that I was left with was archery. I was excited about it, well when I found out what it was anyway, and what sort of 5 year old boy wouldn't be interested in shooting an arrow from a bow, I mean even in NZ we still play cowboys and Indians at that age. So I thought I would see if school would start an archery team, of course they declined the idea as it was coming from a 5 year old. But being so distraught about it I whinged to mum and dad, and that somehow worked, as they put a lot of pressure on the school citing they had a responsibility to cater for students with a disability, and the fact archery wouldn't cost a lot to start up helped seal the deal. Archery took off unbelievably well, probably helped by a small roll meaning we couldn't really field any other sports team, but also the idea that us boys could be like real Indians seemed so cool. Through the years the sport has continued to grow in our school, and we host the biggest archery tournament in the whole South Island which actually brings in a lot of money for the school. We have schools from all over the country send teams to compete here during our tournament, and because of Chris we have the number one ranking at the moment, as Chris is by far the best archer in school and for the last two years has been national champ, as for me I'm alright, I have placed as high as third, which happened to be in nationals when they were held here, but generally I'm middle of the road. I enjoy it though, because when I'm not surfing I get bored out of my mind, so archery helps fill the time and keeps me occupied, not to mention it stops mum worrying about me doing stupid things again. We made it back to our town in what seemed like double quick time, I told Caleb we should get off at the first stop so we could check the surf, so as we reached the first stop we got our selves ready to get off. Once the van stopped we got up and said goodbye to Mrs Milner, and just got a knowing smile in return, and hopped off, closed the door behind us and walked off towards the beach, we decided not to drop our stuff off at my house just in case the surf wasn't any good, because then we could at least walk along the beach back to Caleb's. It was a glorious late summers afternoon, the sun was still high in the sky bathing everything with its warm bright light, the sky was cloudless and there wasn't even the slightest breath of wind, the temperature was at about 28 C (82 F), and once we got to the top of the dunes, the surf was... flat. Bugger it I thought as I could really have done with a good surf, but oh well life isn't too bad when I considered that at least I could walk along the beach holding the hand of the very special boy next to me. Who was as gutted about the surf, but he had come to the same realisation that I had. So once again we casually strolled along the beach hand in hand, and just feeling magical, everything at this point of time was forgotten, all the stresses of the past few days just melted away, nothing in the world really mattered except for the boy beside me, I was in heaven, and I could tell he was there too. At about halfway along the beach we decided to remove our shoes and socks, so we could wade in the water, which given the heat of the day was even more magical as the cool water lapped at our feet and of course we were still holding hands, once we had reached the mole we had a decision to make, to continue to Caleb's or just turn around and walk back along the beach, due to the fact we were starting to get hungry we headed for Caleb's. When we finally made it back to Caleb's dad was waiting for us outside, and was about to ask how school was, but had seen that his son was in seventh heaven so knew his day must have gone well. So instead he just smiled and said welcome home, and I'm glad you had a good day. We had a pretty normal school evening, dinner at six, which dad had cooked up a chicken casserole for us, along with some rice which was scrumptious, as always his meals were to die for. Then we relaxed on the couch, of course me and Caleb were snuggled together, and watched some TV before it was time for bed, we weren't quite as tired tonight so stayed up a little later, we were also still awake when dad came into tuck us naked boys in, I think he had finally got used to us sleeping naked because he no longer gave us a furrowed look when he saw us without PJ's on, but then again what could he do, he knew if he made us wear them we would only take them off again once he left, and at the end of the day it was Caleb's smile that won through, as he was just so glad to see his son so happy, naked or not. The next couple of days went pretty much the same, except there had been a north east wind start up, so even though we got off at the stop closest to my house we never had any intention to surf. Caleb had been enjoying school more and more, with each day he really did seem to grow in confidence, and he really was a kid who genuinely loved school, I know it sounds weird but there are some kids who like the place, but I was starting to wonder as to how much better academically he would have been if he hadn't have suffered so much last year, but was also starting to wonder as to whether that was only the tip of the iceberg, and he was still hiding a lot to do with his school years, because he was really flourishing at my school but he seemed to be a lot behind everyone else. He was catching up and very quickly, but that only added to my concerns. I was sure Caleb was hiding something from me, but as much as I tried to find out more, he told me nothing, he was adamant that my concerns were nothing to worry about, and that he just used to be really lazy at school. I wasn't sure if I believed him, not because I don't trust him, its more that he worries about everyone else's problems, and thinks his aren't important, so I thought I would leave it for a while, and try again when I thought the time was right. Anyway it was now Thursday, and I was getting desperate for a surf, archery hadn't started up yet, no surprises there as this was still the first week of school, so surfing was my only option to play a sport still, and keep my mind sane, so as we got off the bus I noticed the wind had changed to a cooler southerly, my mind started racing knowing I was going to get a surf in today, Caleb had also noticed the wind change, and the surf starved boy took off down the road in a blink of the eye. This time we stopped at my place to get suited up, and grabbed our boards, because we had decided not go back to my place after our surf we would just carry the boards and everything to Caleb's, so we packed our clothes into our school bags, and took them with us. We climbed the dunes only because it's the easiest way to find the best peak, as it has been lately it was the peak just on the other side of the rocky outcrop. The swell was a nice 2 – 2 ½ ft. with the occasional bigger set, the wind was blowing hard enough that the waves were tubing, which got me buzzing even more as it has been a long time since I got a tube, I was also wondering if I could get Caleb into the magic of the green room, as there is no better experience in surfing than being completely surrounded by water in the tube. The weather was starting to cloud over from the north, but as long as the wind didn't change we didn't care, it was still warm enough at 22 C (71 F) and we were so surf deprived, so there was nothing going to stop us. We ran down the dunes and along the beach to just on the other side of the rocks, dropped our bags well past the high tide line, to ensure they didn't get wet, then set off towards the nice inviting surf, stopping only to put our leg ropes on, as we made our way out the back. We were having a great time in the surf and within half an hour I had already scored three tube rides, Caleb had tried to get into a couple but didn't succeed, but proved how good his surfing had improved by managing to still hold the wave and make a nice ride out of them. After catching my forth tube for the session and I paddled back out the back, my mood was out of this world, I was still in a daze from the ride. Caleb started paddling for a wave, snapping me back into reality as I watched the boy go for it, he made the wave stood up, and pulled straight into a tube, he stayed inside the tube for quite a while before the wave slowed and he emerged grinning, and pumping his fists from the thrill of the ride. I was yelling at him my support, thrilled at seeing him get his first tube, like so many things the first time is always the most unforgettable. I saw Caleb turn to face me with the largest grin I had ever seen on his face. But the grin was very short lived, then it turned to a look of absolute horror, I quickly turned to see what he was looking at, when my expression turned the same as his. A huge set had appeared out of nowhere, and I had no place to go as I stared up at the 10 ft. monster of a wave and I instantly knew I was in deep shit. Turns out the cyclone I had heard mentioned in the news had dropped down from the tropics, and skirted the north east coast before clearing the East Cape, which exposed it and the fury of it swell to the entire eastern sea board. Only due to the fact that northern NZ had unusually warm water temperatures did the cyclone not dissipate once it got within about 100 nautical miles of Cape Reinga, instead it continued as a category three, almost four, cyclone all the way down the north eastern coast of NZ, only once it had moved sufficiently off the East Cape did the cyclone finally dissipate to a depression, but the damage had already been done. The cyclone had sent unusually big swells along the eastern sea board, but what was worst was the swell didn't give any warning what so ever, it just suddenly jumped in size, catching out lots of swimmers and surfers in its wake, but surprisingly nobody had died, well that anyone knows about yet anyway. Caleb had thoroughly enjoyed his tube ride, he couldn't believe how unbelievable the experience was, but having pulled out and claimed the tube by celebrating, he turned to see his mate, and see his reaction, but the first sight he saw was not one that he wanted to see, just behind where Dan was waiting, a wave larger than anything he had ever seen in real life was towering above his friend. He knew Dan was in big trouble, but thought it best to stay where he was, just encase he had to rescue Dan from drowning, but also on standby in the event something worse happened and he had to get to shore. I had an expression of complete disbelief, but also sheer terror as I could only sit and watch as the gigantic wave came crashing down only meters from where I was, I knew the sheer power and turbulence the wave will create will be hard enough to survive, but my biggest worry was getting pulled along with the wave and ending up on the rocks, I was just hoping like hell that I would get out of this in one piece. All I had time to do was swear that if I survived I would pay more attention to the news, especially the weather, and then tried to fill my lungs with as much air as I could before the rampaging white-water enveloped me, and I was left to the mercy of the gods. Caleb also took in a deep breath of air as he watched helplessly as his friend got swallowed up by the angry white-water, he saw Dan get tossed around like he was in a washing machine before he was dragged under. Caleb had his skinny fingers crossed as he looked around trying to see if Dan had come up yet, when he finally saw him he exhaled the breath that he had been holding for so long, then turned and sprinted back to the beach. Caleb knew that Dan wasn't going to drown, well not immediately anyway, but he knew from where he had come back up that he was in bigger trouble. Struggling to control his emotions he headed towards where they had left there school bags, once he reached them, he open up his one and rifled through it till he found what he was looking for it was his cell phone. He pulled it out and shakily rung 1-1-1 as adrenalin started to course through the boy's veins. "Hello 1-1-1 emergency, which service do you want fire..." the emergency operator said on the other end of the phone, but Caleb knew this was potentially going to be a life or death situation so interrupted her abruptly. "Ambulance, and hurry this is an extreme emergency," he said bluntly and added the last part to show he wasn't kidding around, he looked back out at the water and his worst fears were realised, as he saw Dan get hit by another wall of white-water, and slammed into the rocks. "Ambulance services how can I help?" the operator asked snapping Caleb back to the task at hand. "I need the air rescue chopper sent out immediately, I know you can track this call so I'm not going to waste time in giving you directions, the situation is critical as we have a 13 year old boy with Haemophilia who has just been slammed against some rocks, he was surfing when a huge wave came in and caught him off guard, sorry but this is all I can tell you for the moment, because I still have to get back out there and save him, if you need anything I should be back at my phone in 5 – 10 minutes so you can call back then, but send the chopper now, and I've got to go," he then hung up the phone, looked out towards the rocks to where he had last seen Dan, and seen that he was still at least conscious as he was desperately trying to climb onto the rocks in search of safer ground. He was struggling though as he was still attached to his board by the leg rope, and it was threatening to pull him back down, but the boy reached down to his ankles, struggled for a bit before he succeeded in undoing the leg rope and letting it go. Caleb could tell something was very wrong though, as he saw Dan's board get caught by the next wave and slammed into some other rocks smashing the board in three, what he had noticed was that after releasing himself from the board Dan made no further attempt to get out of harm's way, this prompted Caleb to quickly make one last call before he tried to save him. "Hello Caleb what do you want," his dad asked Caleb in his friendly tone, after having seen his son's name come up on the caller display on his cell. "Dad, its Dan he's... in big... trouble... you ... need to get down... here straight... away... and... bring something... to help... try and stop... the bleeding," after hearing his dad's voice Caleb could no longer control his emotions and just started crying, but got his message through, he only hoped his dad understood him, then hung up the phone not waiting for a reply. He then took a deep breath to regain his composure, drop the cell on top of his bag, picked up his board again and sprinted back towards the water. Caleb paddled his board as quickly as he could, struggling every time a wall of white-water came through because he hadn't mastered the art of duck diving, but picked it up pretty quick, as it's amazing what you can learn quickly in an emergency situation. Caleb was a strong swimmer but having the surfboard under him allowed him to paddle quicker, he skirted the rocks leaving quite a bit of distance between him and them, then he had to wait till just the right moment before he made his move, because if he miss timed it, then he could end up on the rocks as well, then he would be no good to anyone. Finally he saw what he was waiting for, after the next wave was a big lull in the swell, so he caught the wave sending him hurtling towards the rocks, but Caleb was in full control, so when he decided he was close enough he bailed over the back of the wave and watched it smash into the rocks only a couple of meters in front of him. He then quickly paddled right in to the rocks as close to Dan's immobile body as he could get, he didn't waste any time checking over the boy, but did notice a lot of blood cascading down the rocks, like a red waterfall, into the water swirling around at the base, he reached as high as he could up the boy's body, and pulled him back into the water, then he gathered him and lay him on the surfboard, before hopping back on himself and paddling as quick as he could away from the rocks. His timing was impeccable, as soon as he was a safe distance from the rocks the next wall of white-water hit them, Caleb had turned his board to face the beach, and used the wave to carry them back to shore. Once back on shore he quickly undid his leg rope, then grabbed Dan under his arms and pulled him a safe distance from the water leaving his board behind. Now he finally started to look the boy over, and it wasn't a pretty sight, there were three big tears in his wetsuit, and an open gash underneath each tear, one was on his right arm, another was on his right leg, but the most serious was the one in his abdomen. His head had a couple of little scratches, which just looked bad because of the amount of blood pouring from them, but Caleb knew not to waste time with them. He quickly ran and got thier bags plus his cell in case the ambulance person called back, he rummaged through the bags looking for something to help stem the blood flow, but couldn't find anything, he decided the only thing that was of use that they had, was his wetsuit, so he stripped it off as quick as he could, and tied it tightly around Dan's abdomen, it seemed to work as there was a hell of a lot less blood coming out of the wound now. Caleb noticed that his dad had just arrived, Caleb was very thankful that he had actually found them as he neglected to tell him what they were doing, or where they were. He was carrying some towels. Seeing where the boys were he quickly sprinted to reach them, once he arrived he didn't say anything to his now naked son he just passed the towels to Caleb trusting that the boy knew exactly what he needed to do. Caleb grabbed the towels, and quickly tied one around Dan's right arm, and another around his right leg, then went back over all his makeshift bandages to make sure they were all tight. Caleb's cell rang while he was applying the bandages, so his dad answered it, it was the lady from the ambulance dispatch centre, wanting to know what the latest information was, Caleb's dad just told her what he could see, but handed the phone to Caleb once he saw that the boy had finished. Caleb filled her in on the extent of the injuries, gave her a better report on their location, also informed her what he had done to try to stop all the blood, the lady was clearly impressed with what the little boy had done, she thought that he must have done so first aid training or something similar, because he had done all that could be hoped for given the circumstances. She also told him the chopper should get there within the next 5 – 10 minutes and he should make sure there was a clear area nearby in which it could land. Five minutes later the loud thud of a helicopters rotor blades could be heard approaching from the south, when they landed they saw a little bit of a strange scene, a heavily bandaged body on the sand, with a naked boy holding the patients hand while talking to him, with an older man, presumable one of the kids dad's behind the naked boy hugging him. A Bell 412 helicopter landed on the firm sand, it was painted red with the logo of the bank that sponsors it on the side, it was a large helicopter measuring 17.1 meters long and weighing 2040kg. Its rotors were powered by two 671KW turbocharged Pratt and Whitney engines, and could travel at an impressive 259km/h as its top speed. Factory standard it could hold up to 13 passengers and two pilots, but all but two of the seats in the carriage had been removed, and replaced by a full life support system, plus other medical equipment that may be needed in an emergency situation. Once the chopper had settled firmly on the hard sand, the paramedics sprinted over to the group carrying a stretcher, they quickly rolled the boy on the stretcher, and carried him back to the chopper as quickly as they could, once back on the chopper the first thing they did has hook him up to a blood pack, then went about putting on all the other monitors on so they could monitor the condition of the patient. While all this was happening Caleb tried to slip onto the helicopter, but one of the paramedics noticed him and said that as much as they would love to take him after all that he had done for them, they couldn't as they needed to be able to have easy access to the patient at all times during the flight back to the hospital. Well this did not go down very well with Caleb, as his emotions hit boing point, and he just lost it, he started crying uncontrollably, and fighting with the paramedics trying to get on board so he could be with his mate, he became so wild and uncontrollable that his dad struggled to be able to restrain him, in the end he ended up pinning the naked boy to the ground, and started to try and explain to him what was going to happen, and why it was better for Dan that he does not go in the helicopter. Finally, it was the mention of Dan that made him pay attention, and eventually see the point, now calmed down enough to let him up dad backed off him. He then helped the boy to his feet, and they moved a safe distance from the helicopter, and watched it take off, the turn around and plough its way back to the hospital at full tilt. Caleb was still balling his eyes out but waved as the helicopter took off, and saw some of the people inside wave back, which made him a little happier, but not much. Caleb just stood there numbly as the last of the adrenalin seeped out of his system; he was a total emotional wreck, oblivious to everything that was happening by now, even the small crowd that had gathered to see what was happening. He forgot all about being naked, and he had also stopped crying as he didn't even have the energy to still do that. He just couldn't understand how something that had started as clean harmless fun, had turned into such tragedy, he couldn't comprehend any of it. He was starting to shiver uncontrollably, not because he was cold, because he was going into shock from the tragic events that had just unfolded, his legs were staring to buckle, and if his dad hadn't have noticed how bad his son had got, and picked him up, he would have collapsed on the sand. Caleb's dad started to carry his naked son back to his car in a hurry, while trying to dodge the questions from the concerned onlookers, saying that he really needed to get his son home and changed, so they could go to the hospital, and that all the information that they were going to need would surely be in the paper tomorrow. So Caleb's dad carried his son to the car, struggled but somehow managed to get the door open to the back seat without putting Caleb down. He put him in the backseat and then lay him down gently knowing his son wasn't in a good enough shape to keep him sitting, he thanked a couple of the bystanders which had bought up the boy's school bags and given them to Caleb's dad, he got in the driver's seat, started the engine and put the pedal to the metal, leaving a trail of dust as he sped off home. He got home in about a couple of minutes after he left the car park at the other end of town, parked the car and ran inside leaving the car idling. As quick as he could he grabbed some clothes so he could clothe his son, and ran back to the car, he put the clothes on Caleb, which was rather awkward, as there isn't a lot of room to change someone in a car, but was made worse by Caleb's near comatose body. He was really starting to worry about his son because he had never seen someone react so badly to a situation, so he thought he better call some help, and decided the best people to ring where the same people he had talked to at the emergency call centre. He, by some miracle, got the same lady he had talked to before, which made explaining the situation a lot easier, she told him his body had gone into emotional shock, which can be very dangerous, so she dispatched an ambulance, and told the father to still head in but when he saw the ambulance heading his way to signal it down and transfer the boy onto it. Just before he was about to take off towards the hospital, he thought he better check Dan's bag to see if the boy's cell phone was in there so he could get in contact with his mother. Checking the bag and finding the phone he scrolled down the contacts list till he found the boy's mums number, and rang it. It went to voice mail so he left a brief message also telling her to ring him back on his phone and left his number, then hung up set up his phone in the hands free kit, and got back in the driver's seat and took off towards the city and the hospital. They met the ambulance just outside the gates of Debra Bay Area School, Dan and Caleb's school; the paramedics quickly pulled a gurney from the ambulance and wheeled it around to the car, then expertly and gently removed the inert boy from the car and put him on the gurney. Caleb was in a real bad way at this stage, his lips had turned blue along with his fingertips, he was struggling to breath, and he was unconscious which added to their concerns, they quickly wheeled him back, and loaded him on to the ambulance and hooked him up with all the monitoring equipment, Caleb's dad then informed them that Caleb had a medical condition they should know about, he had a congenital heart disease, and this wasn't the first time he had be to hospital. His dad had known from seeing the boy, as the paramedics had pulled him from the car, that Caleb's heart was playing up again from the disease, it generally isn't life threatening, and sometimes goes away almost as quick as it starts, but in conjunction with the emotional shock his body was going through it wasn't a good sign. Caleb had the disease since birth, and the only times he has ever come close to dying from it, is when he put too much strain on it, generally from too much physical exercise, but that was only when he chose to ignore the early warning signs and continue doing what he was doing. He had been put on medication for it which in general has worked, but he has ended up going to hospital because of it a few times, they have recently changed his medication, to a supposedly better version and up until now he has not shown any signs of the heart problems, well at least while his father has been around. The ambulance quickly did a U-turn and sped off towards the hospital with its strobes flashing, and Caleb's dad followed it, he was glad the ambulance had meet them when it did, as he knew from looking at the boy, that the stress had started to make his heart play up again, he found out later that the ambulance had got there so quick, because it was dispatched from Charmers as opposed to from the city. A couple of minutes after the transfer his phone started to ring, he answered it easing off the gas a bit so he could concentrate, at least it was hands free so he could continue driving he thought. Dan's mother had returned his call from earlier and she was frantic and panicking, Caleb's dad filled her in on what he knew, from what he had seen, and from having overheard the conversation Caleb had with the lady from the emergency call centre. He also filled her in on Caleb, and could tell she was crying through worry, not only for her boy, but her son's friend, well should I say boyfriend aswell. In between sobs she said that she would meet him once he got to the hospital, and wished him the best for Caleb, he did the same and hung up, put his foot harder on the gas again, and chased the ambulance all the way to the hospital. When they finally made it to the hospital he frantically tried to find a car park, not knowing how long he was going to end up staying there he went into the long term hospital parking. He then rushed through to the accident and emergency area, and went up the receptionist and asked her where his son had been taken too from the ambulance. She directed him to the waiting area, and said she would find someone to fill him in on his condition, while he was waiting he saw Dan's mum came rushing in like a chook without a head, she saw him and ran straight up to him, and asked what he knew. He said to her he had only just arrived and the receptionist was going to find someone to fill him in, he said he didn't know about Dan and there was no point in him asking, because he wasn't related so they wouldn't tell him anything. So they both waited, he was hugging her trying to reassure her that they would be alright. Then the receptionist returned and told him someone would be out very shortly, Dan's mum then asked her, if she could find out about her son, who had been airlifted in, she said for her to go through to the operating theatre waiting rooms and that someone there would be able to fill her in, she turned to Caleb's dad and told him when he got the chance she thought he should pop over too and she would fill him in, he said he would get there as soon as he could, and with that she left in search of the operating theatres. Moments later Caleb's dad got to see the doctor who was in charge of his son, he gave him a run down about how they only just got there in time, he was stable, but still in a coma, but he thought that he should come out of it soon, but for the moment until they had checked off everything, he was sorry but wouldn't allow him to see his son, he told him to have a coffee or something and come back in an hour's time and he would be able to tell him more, and with any luck he would let him see the boy. He decided to use the time to find out about Dan, but just before he could leave the media were all over him wanting to know the story, he told them flatly that now was not a good time, and he would let them know when he was ready to release a statement to them, he was caught a bit off guard with how quickly they had found out about it, but would worry about it later as there was another important person to find out about. He found the operating theatre waiting room and was immediately latched onto by Dan's mum who was balling her eyes out; the news hadn't been very good for her son. He had lost a lot of blood, but thanks to Caleb's quick thinking with using his own wetsuit as a bandage he was still alive, they were trying to stitch up the wounds but of course due to his condition, that wouldn't stop him bleeding, so they were trying to give him his meds via drip, but it was going to take a while before they started to work, and the size of the wounds meant it would take a long time to clog completely. There was also the worry about infection, but they wouldn't know any more about that till later, the only good news on Dan's front was that he was still alive. They decided the only thing they could do for the moment was head to the cafeteria and have a coffee, and then head back to A&E to check up on Caleb again. Dan they knew, they wouldn't be able to see till at least tomorrow, but his mum had given Dr Miller a call, and gave him a brief rundown as to what happened, and told him that she wanted him in charge of her son again, he said he would get there as soon as he could, but said that Dan was in more than capable hands in the meantime. So they sat in quiet drinking their coffee's in the almost empty café, both weeping and just not being able to believe the events that have happened and ending up with both of them being in the hospital, and praying that both boys were going to be OK. After a while they wandered back to the A&E waiting room as it had now been over an hour since Caleb's dad had last seen the doctor, they got there and let the receptionist know who they were and she said the doctor, who had forgotten to introduce himself in the heat of the moment, would be with them as soon as he could, so they took a seat and waited. They ended up waiting there for over an hour which had made them really nervous, and they paced up and down the waiting room, till the doctor finally arrived. "Hello, I'm Dr Walker, I'm sorry I should have introduced myself earlier," he said and shook Caleb's dad's hand, and then he shook Dan's mum's hand. Dr Walker was a tall thin man, standing at about 6'3", and weighing in at 68kg. Even though he was in his late 40's he looked about ten years younger, he had a full head of curly grey hair on his long narrow face. He had a long nose, and deep-set blue eyes and his forehead was only just showing the stress wrinkles of being a doctor. As with most doctors he was clean shaven, and wore a white coat. "And you must be Dan's mum, I'll get to how I figured that out in a moment, firstly I should tell you the good news Caleb is fine, he is awake and talking, and you will be able to see him shortly, but we will need to go over to the children's ward, so if you two will kindly follow me," the doctor said as started heading away. "Oh thank god he's alright," both the adults had said in unison, at the news. "Well Caleb is a unique case," the doctor continued while they were walking towards the children's ward. "he is also a very brave boy, as if it wasn't for his actions Dan wouldn't be here, at the time of the accident Caleb was able to see what was going to happen, and as soon as he knew he was right, he had made his initial call to 1-1-1, then he rang you, after that he paddled back out and pulled Dan off the rocks, before getting him back to shore and applying basic first aid," he said, then saw both parents just hug each other, proud in the fact that Caleb had done an extraordinary job. "But that isn't what I wanted to talk to you about. You may or may not be aware but Caleb has a special attachment to Dan, and he is the first case I have ever seen of this, don't get me wrong I have read about other case's, but he is the first one for me," both parents at this stage just nodded knowingly. "His connection to Dan is so strong that what has happened to Dan almost killed Caleb, his body shut down so much from the emotional attachment that it caused his heart disease to flare up again, now although he has totally recovered I am going to recommend that I keep him in for tonight at least, for observation, I know Dan's situation, and am very worried about how Caleb is going to react when he finds out the news, the next little while until Dan's situation becomes clear, are going to be extremely tough for Caleb, and I'm worried that his body might relapse when he hears the news. I'm hoping for both boys' case that Dan recovers quickly," he said with obvious worry in his voice, which caused the parents to hug tighter, but he continued to tell them what he thought he should. "But I must warn you, of the cases I've read about if one dies, the other follow's very quickly. I don't think either boy will go down that path just yet but I have to tell you just encase," the doctor was deadly serious about what could happen even though he firmly believed that Dan would pull through, he felt it only right to warn Caleb's dad. They arrived at the children's ward and got shown to Caleb's room, and were surprised when they saw him to find him tightly restrained in his hospital cot, the doctor ran to find out why the boy had been restrained and once he found out he went back to the room to tell the parents. "It seems that Caleb was feeling well enough that he had decided to go and find Dan, but the nurses wouldn't let him, and he had given them such a fight that the only option they had was to restrain the boy to his cot," after telling them that he left the two with Caleb to catch up, he had to struggle to keep a smirk from appearing on his face, he just couldn't believe how much this boy cared for his friend, it was to the extent that he would probably do some serious damage to himself if it meant that Dan would live. "Hi Caleb, I hear your causing the nurses a lot of grief," his dad said not overly surprised, he knew he was going to have the same battle when he tried to get him home. "Dad, I want to see Dan, you have to take me, I need to see him and make sure he's alright," he said hysterically trying to move in his cot so he could get up, but the restraints held firm and he hardly moved at all. "Sorry Caleb, but not even I can see Dan yet because he is still in surgery," Dan's mum said crying just a little, not just from her grief, but for the boy's grief too. She then told Caleb all she knew, and cried almost a heavily as Caleb was at the news, the two adults gave Caleb as much of a hug as they could given his restraints, once they had sufficiently got their emotions under control, they asked Caleb to tell them the whole story, which left them staring in disbelief as it just seemed so unreal. After hearing the story Caleb's dad said that he was going to tell the media what has happened, more to get them off their backs than any other reason, and said to Dan's mum that she should go find out about Dan, then we would come back here and tell Caleb the news. ************ Comments are always welcome at (pennywise3636@gmail.com).
