Brandon and Alex Chapter Thirty Three Things had been tense at Bobby's house during his father's trial, and he spent most of the weekends at Michael's house as a result. His parents were back on their normal work schedules - sort of - during the trial. Naturally his father had to spend the majority of the day in court, seated behind the defendant's table, but afterwards would go to the office to keep up with what was going on. They were usually home by around eight in the evening, but then it was life as usual. Well, it was in the sense that they got totally trashed on martinis, the difference was that they were doing it at home now instead of going out. This didn't make things any easier for Bobby. In fact it was worse for him having to watch them getting blotto rather than just dealing with their drunken behavior when they came home. It did convince him of one thing though - that he wasn't going to follow in their footsteps. He wouldn't drink at the high school keg parties that he and Michael went to on the weekends. Michael, seeing how much drinking bothered Bobby also abstained from alcohol. He also recalled all too well the trouble having too much to drink had caused him with Paolo. Getting wasted at one of these parties was what had gotten that entire mess started. He certainly didn't want anything like that to happen again. Both boys got an involuntary lesson from Bobby's father about drinking and driving as well. Okay, maybe that particular lesson had good and bad sides. The important thing both boys absorbed was the kind of trouble drinking and driving can get you into. That was the one they remembered. The other lesson that neither Bobby or Michael absorbed was about evading a charge because you have enough money to get a good enough legal team - a typical problem in the legal system in the United States. Now that the trial was over, Bobby's parents stuck to their new alcoholic schedule pretty well, returning home from their offices in the evenings around eight and drinking themselves stupid before going to bed between eleven and midnight. They would repeat this every weekday. They still went out on the weekends, but now they were at least smart enough to hire a limousine to drive them when they went out. One nice thing was that Bobby and Michael once again had Bobby's house to themselves in the afternoons when school was out for the day. Sometimes Billy would come over and join them from his new home across and slightly down the street. Since the junior high school where Billy went let out an hour earlier than their high school, Billy would normally be waiting for them on Bobby's front steps when they arrived. Bobby had recently given him a key to the door so he could join them if they were at the pool and didn't hear the doorbell, much like he had with Steven and Carson, but Billy still waited as he seemed to think that was polite. Sometimes on the days when Billy wasn't waiting for them when they got to Bobby's house in the afternoon Bobby and Michael would still swim in the nude, a feeling they loved. It was on one of the afternoons when Billy wasn't waiting for them that they were doing just that. They had stripped in Bobby's room and come down to the pool naked, carrying their towels, just as they had done on the day Bobby's father had been arrested. But Billy hadn't shared with them that he was seeing a therapist a couple times a week after school as a result of his experiences in the juvenile detention facility and the ensuing trial. On this particular day that's where he had been, and it was why he wasn't waiting for them on Bobby's front steps when they arrived. When Rosemary Hill drove Billy home after his appointment he was in pretty good spirits, which was unusual after one of these sessions. He was finally coming to grips with the abuse he had suffered and had begun to understand that it hadn't been his fault. His spirits were also high because Stan and Rosemary Hill had filed papers to adopt him. So when he saw Michael's car in the driveway at Bobby's he thought change into his swimsuit and join them at the pool - after all, spring was in the air now, and it was warm enough to use outdoor swimming pools once more. He was quite sure that's where they would be. Billy tried ringing the doorbell first, and when he got no answer, he figured his friends were at the pool, so he got the key Bobby had given him from his shorts pocket and opened the door. He knew the rule at the Connor house and left his shoes in the entry hall next to Bobby's and Michael's and headed through the living room on his way to the pool. The sliding glass door that led from the living room to the pool deck made so little noise that you could barely hear it if you were the one opening it. As he walked out through the sliding glass door and closed it behind himself he saw that Bobby was swimming laps and Michael was sitting on the concrete steps that led up and out of the pool with his back toward the house. Neither of his new friends had noticed that he was there yet as he stripped off his t-shirt and shorts, dropping them on one of the pool chairs as he walked over to join Michael on the steps, dressed in his favorite blue and white checked Speedo swimsuit. There was a dawning realization in both boys as Billy entered the water up to his waist and sat down next to Michael. On Michael's part it was that Billy had just showed up, while he and Bobby were in the pool together naked. On Billy's part it was that Michael was sitting on the steps in the nude. Then Billy took a closer look at Bobby. That's when he saw, or took note of, the fact that Bobby was doing his exercise laps naked as well. Of course, Billy had seen the two boys without their clothes before, in the changing rooms and showers or in Bobby's bedroom when they had been swimming before (and even his own bedroom when they swam in the pool at his new home), but this was the first time he actually saw them swimming in the buff. Michael was startled when Billy entered the water next to him. He started to make a move with his hands to cover himself, but stopped when he saw it was Billy. He smiled at the younger boy as he sat down next to him on the middle step. "Hey kiddo, how ya doin'?" Michael asked him. "Pretty good," Billy answered, smiling back at Michael. "Am I in time to get in a couple of laps?" he asked, seeming to completely ignore their nudity. Michael was surprised that Billy hadn't seemed to notice that he and Bobby were naked. Then he realized that couldn't be it. Billy wasn't intellectually slow, nor was he unobservant. He had simply chosen not to say anything about it. Michael nodded to him and said, "Yeah, go ahead. Bobby still has a few laps to go before he's done. Now, Michael could have gone and gotten swimsuits for Bobby and himself, but he decided against it. It would certainly draw attention to the fact of their nakedness, and he had a thought that Billy might be ready for it in any case. At the very least it would probably make Billy believe that they had some reason to be ashamed of what they were doing, and they certainly weren't that. - - - Bobby realized that there was someone swimming next to him in the pool as Billy joined him, but he thought it was Michael coming back into the water. He did two more lengths of the pool before stopping and coming to rest against the edge of the pool in the shallow end, standing in the water and resting his head on his arms atop the pool deck. As he turned his head and looked toward the house he saw... Michael. He was still sitting on the steps where he had last seen him, with a big grin on his face. So who was in the pool swimming with him? That was the only thought going through Bobby's head. Then Billy's head popped up next to him. Billy's smile was wide and mischievous as he looked at Bobby. "Hi!" he said as he threw his elbows up on the edge of the pool and put his chin in his hands. "So why are you guys swimming naked?" he asked bluntly, but in a cheerful, impish voice. The way Billy had popped up next to Bobby, the look on Bobby's face and then Billy's question and the way he asked it was too much for Michael, who had been trying to keep a straight face. He couldn't help but to burst out laughing. His laughter was infectious, and a moment later all three boys were laughing with gusto. Once they had all calmed back down, Billy asked once again, "Seriously, why are you guys swimming naked?" Bobby looked to Michael as if for guidance. Michael just shrugged, so Bobby just went with the truth, some of it anyway. "Well, it just feels a lot better to swim this way sometimes," he said. "Then why haven't we ever done it before?" Billy asked pointedly. 'Damn,' Bobby thought, 'this kid can ask some tough questions.' Michael helped him out on that one though, say "We just didn't think it would really be quite right, Billy. We haven't really known you that long, and we didn't know how you'd react, you know; if it might make you uncomfortable or something." Billy looked back and forth between them and then asked "Is it because you guys are lovers?" That tough question of Billy's was answered at first only by a moment of stunned silence. * * * It was about ten o'clock Saturday morning and Brandon and Alex were putting their plan to get Kyle and Joey together into action. They had let Joey in on what they intended to do. They had to because he was in fact an integral part of the plan. The three boys were out in Joey's front yard, tossing a football back and forth between them. They were spread out in a triangular formation across the front yard with Brandon and Alex at the corners of the yard nearest the street and Joey in the middle of the yard close to the house. Brandon was in the best position to see when Kyle started down Joey's street toward them. Kyle was a creature of habit and always used the same route when he rode by, so the three friends knew exactly what to expect when he showed up on his way down the street. True to the schedule Brandon and Alex had counted on when they formed their plan, they didn't have long to wait. It was almost ten thirty when Brandon spotted Kyle turning onto the street where Joey's house was located. He gave the prearranged signal to Alex and Joey to let them know the 'target' was in sight. This signal changed the sequence of the passing of the football so that it was only going back and forth between Brandon and Alex for a few moments until Kyle was almost to them. At just the right moment, Brandon gave Alex a nod and the ball went to Joey. Then from Joey it went toward Brandon. The ball was intentionally over-thrown, well above Brandon and instead of landing just in front of Kyle as the plan called for, it hit him squarely in the side of the head, causing Kyle to lose control of where he was going and plow the front tire of the bicycle into the curb on the far side of the street and flip over the bike's handlebars onto the grass, the wind knocked out of him. Kyle was slow to start getting up, and the three boys were all genuinely concerned that he might have been hurt from the spill he had taken when he tumbled over the front of the bicycle. As a result their apologies and panic came over as quite genuine, which they were. When they reached him, Kyle was just starting to move, trying to push himself up onto his elbows as he lay on his back in the grass. Even though he was the farthest away; Joey sprinted toward Kyle and reached him just a fraction of a second before Brandon and Alex did. "Oh my God dude! I'm SO sorry... Are you hurt? Are you okay? PLEASE tell me you're okay! I really didn't mean to hit you with the ball!" Everything just gushed out of Joey without him even taking a breath as he knelt beside Kyle, placing a hand on his chest. It took Kyle a moment to respond, during which time Joey managed to babble a few more incomprehensible sentences. "Yeah, I'm okay. What did you hit me with anyway?" Kyle asked, still sort of dazed. "It was a ... It was a football," Joey answered, before a torrent of words gushed out... "I'm really sorry, I didn't mean to. I'm not very good at throwing it. I really didn't mean to hit you with it..." Kyle was finally able to catch his breath and sit up. "Don't worry about it dude, I think I'm alright," he said. His hand went to his chest and he found it resting on top of Joey's. It stayed there for just a moment until Kyle realized where his hand was: on Joey's on his chest. He liked the warmth of the smooth skin beneath his fingers, but slowly, reluctantly removed his hand, sort of sliding it away, rubbing his fingers across the back of Joey's hand as he did. There was an awkward moment of silence as Kyle and Joey gazed into each other's eyes. It was Alex who finally spurred things along by poking Joey in the ribs to remind him of the plan, which thanks to Joey's inadvertently hitting Kyle with the ball was now modifying itself as it went along. Joey stood, finally removing his hand from Kyle's chest as he did. He extended his hand, offering it to Kyle and said "Here, let me help you up." Kyle accepted Joey's offer, and Joey helped pull the older boy to his feet. Joey didn't let go of Kyle's hand right away though, and extended his other to rub the side of Kyle's head where the ball had hit him. A lump was already forming there. "You better come in and let me give you some ice to put on that," Joey said. "You're gonna have a pretty big goose-egg there it feels like." Kyle smiled at Joey and nodded, then allowed himself to be led inside. Brandon picked up Kyle's bike from the street and pushed it along, leaning it against the porch railing when they got to the house. Brandon and Alex took Kyle into the family room and pointed him to the sofa to sit while Joey prepared an ice pack. When Joey came into the room, he sat next to Kyle on the sofa and held the ice pack to Kyle's head. That got to be a little uncomfortable, so Joey suggested that Kyle move to his opposite side and lay his head in his lap while he held the ice pack. Kyle balked at the idea at first, but Joey explained that he felt responsible because he had thrown the ball and it was only right that he should do what he could to make Kyle feel better. Finally Kyle acquiesced and changed positions so he could lay down with his head in Joey's lap while he held the ice pack in place. The four boys made small talk, Kyle getting to know a little more about Brandon, Alex and especially Joey, and they about him. During this, Kyle told them about being the up and coming quarterback on his school's football team (which of course they already knew) and offered to give Joey a few pointers about throwing the ball so maybe he wouldn't have any more accidents like the one that had caused them to meet. As they talked, Joey started playing with Kyle's soft, brown hair with the fingers of his free hand. It was an unconscious act when he started, but when he realized what he was doing, and Kyle hadn't objected, he continued. It was still a surprise to Brandon and Alex, but even more so to Joey when Kyle turned his head so he could look up at Joey and ask, "So, do you have a boyfriend?" It shouldn't have been that big a surprise for the three friends, they knew that Kyle was interested in Joey, so he had to be gay or bi anyway, but they KNEW he was interested from the way he had been acting for the past several weeks. They were still surprised and taken aback a little by the directness of the question, to ask something like that, he must know about them, or at least suspect. But how could he? There was no way... * * * The biggest obstacle in Steven and Carson's relationship was Steven's mother. She wasn't vocal about it, but it was more in what she didn't say. Her demeanor toward Carson was not quite cold when she saw him, but it certainly wasn't friendly. Her relationship with her husband and son had also changed, and not for the better. It ate at her that her son was gay; and even more so that she had caught him and his boyfriend with her son in the receiving role. The truth was that she would have been a little more accepting of the situation if he had been in the dominant role, but not much. It didn't help the way she felt that her husband was so accepting of the situation, in her mind everyone except her seemed to be just fine with what her son and his friend had been doing. She couldn't bring herself to think of Carson as her son's boyfriend. It had preyed upon her mind so much that Janet Roberts had even started seeing a therapist about it. The therapist she chose had her own agenda though - and it was one that coincided very much with Janet's views. Steven's mother had found her therapist through an ultra-right-wing fundamentalist Christian group. Although they used the word "love" in their group's name, they did not truly love those who digressed from what they considered to be God's true path. That certainly included homosexuals. In fact, they operated a deprogramming 'boot camp' for parents to send their gay teens to in order to be 'repaired' and returned to what their narrow-minded view considered to be 'normal.' No, tolerance and understanding were not among their virtues by any means. Even though she didn't think her husband would agree at first, Janet Roberts was sure she would be able to convince him that the intervention she was planning for their son was the best thing to do. She planned to have some of the 'counselors' from the boot camp pick him up after school. She would tell her husband about it only after Steven was already safely away at the group's camp. * * * Comments and feedback are welcomed at t_macd@comcast.net (I will answer all e-mails sent to me, but please realize that my job requires me to travel a great deal, so it might take a while sometimes), flamers will be ignored by me, but will meet with an untimely and horrible demise as the result of the curse of the old gypsy woman who lives across the lake from me, and has inexplicably taken a liking to me.
