Caleb

Epilogue

He stood in the darkened room naked except for a pair of night shorts gazing out of the window into the orange-lit streets below. His mind wandered back to times past when Benji at sixteen had left school. How devastated he'd been the thought of going to school without Benji was frightening, but he prevailed. Then Benji's coming to live with them after telling his parents of his feelings, which had been no surprise to either of them and he left with their blessing. The day Benji walked into the house with his suitcase and belongings was one of the happiest days of his life. Now he was frightened again how could he do it? His thoughts were brought to an abrupt end, as a pair of arms encircled him and drew him back, a head was lowered and teeth gently nibbled his ear. He lifted his hand and stroked the face turned his head slightly and whispered, "Benji."

"Why so sad Caleb."

"Not sad Benji, frightened."

"What's to be frightened about?"

"University Benji I don't want to go, I want to stay here with you."

"We'll talk about it later Cal come to bed."

Drawing the curtains and switching on the light and taking Caleb by the hand he led him to the bed. They lay side by side arms entwined gazing at each other Benji stretched his arm to put the light out, "Leave it on for a bit longer Benji I want to talk a bit."

"Okay Cal what you want to talk about."

"Having to go away Benji. I know it's not for another ten months but time goes so quickly when you dread the approach of a certain date. You know how I feel about being away from you I don't think I can go through with it. Benji, are you listening? Benji."

"Caleb, look into my eyes?"

Caleb was startled but did as he was asked he gazed into those sky blue eyes then he was falling. He woke startled he was on a grassy plain not a tree in sight, not a cloud in the sky. He whimpered then sensed someone approaching. He turned, and his heart jumped there was Benji, arms outstretched running towards him. His fear left him, he ran as fast as he could towards Benji they meet and their bodies merge into one. Gently they swirl like a benign whirlwind, then from the very heart of their union a burst of light brighter than any sun, shooting into the very heavens.

"Caleb, where are we?"

"Haven't the faintest Benji, but it's really nice here."

"Cal, I'm inside you."

"No Benji were inside each other, were one."

"Never knew how much you meant Benji, when you said you loved me heaps. Heaps is not the word Benji, mountainous more like it."

"Cal, now I know why you need me near you so much of the time. I can feel you in every part of me your love for me is I can't begin to explain it, it's beautiful Caleb."

"Benji, do you think we can stay here forever?"

"No Cal we have to go back your mum is calling."

"No Benji let's stay here."

"Cal, my parents have each other and my brother, your mother has only you we have to go back for her sake."

You're right Benji but can't we stay for just a little longer."

"Come Caleb we can't delay."

"Caleb, Benji, wake up I'm not going to tell you again."

"Okay mum we'll be out in a bit."

"Benji."

"Uh huh."

"What happened?"

"I'm not sure."

"When you told me to look into your eyes it just sort of happened from there."

"I didn't tell you to look into my eyes Cal."

"You did."

"Can't remember that. Do you think we died Cal."

"Don't think so Benji. We couldn't have been dead for nine hours then come back to life again."

"Nine hours, bullshit! We were only up their for a few seconds."

"Benji, we went to bed at 11pm it's 8am now that to my reckoning is nine hours."

"What was that all about Cal."

"Not sure Benji, but I think we were given a glimpse of what will happen in the Afterlife"

"You really believe that Caleb."

"Yep, and it's made me feel a whole lot better about going to University knowing how much you love me. You don't realise how strong you are Benji and I mean mentally not physically. You brought me back when I wanted to stay and now when the time comes I think I can handle being away from you. All I have to do is think about this night and I know you'll never be far away."

"Do you really think I'm going to let you go off on your own. I can get a job in the same town and with your grant and my salary I'm sure we'll be able to afford our own flat. Like I said I'm sticking close to you like glue and nothing is going to get between us."

"Benji."

"What."

"Can I get you into my ungetoutable hold."

"Thought you'd never ask."

The End.
