He really wanted to try and see him before that, but didn't think Mr. Danielson would approve. "I don't need that kind of hassle," he thought, as he anxiously stared out the window. Looking at his watch, Travis decided that five minutes before 7:00 was close enough and he hurried down to his boat. "What's the rush?" his Dad called out as Travis hurried passed, letting the screen door slam behind him. Travis didn't have time to explain. He jumped in the boat and was on his way. Nearing the resort's dock, he slowed the boat to an idle, and saw Josh was just walking down from the house. "He's smiling," Travis said to himself, "that's got to be good, right?" All night he'd worried that he had made a big mistake when he asked Josh to be his boyfriend. "There couldn't be any denying that kind of relationship," he thought, "straight guys didn't have boyfriends!" "Damn, you're here early!" Josh laughed as he walked onto the dock. "Yeah," Travis answered nervously. "I really need to talk to you!" Josh grinned, "Sure." Travis glanced toward the far end of the pier where Drew was bailing rain water out of one of the rental boats. Drew looked at Travis and Josh and shook his head. Josh, thinking quickly, said, loud enough for Drew to hear, "Oh yeah, we have a saw you can borrow! It's up here." Travis tied up his boat and followed Josh toward the shed. "What's so important?" Josh whispered, as they got a few yards from the shore. "I'll tell you when we're inside!" As Josh turned the light on, Travis closed the shed door. "Josh, about yesterday, I couldn't help myself!" Josh got a puzzled look on his face. "What are you talking about?" "About us being boyfriends," Travis said softly, "I should never have asked you that!" "You don't want to be my boyfriend?" he said with a confused look. "No, no! I do. But, I thought you wouldn't want to be boyfriends! You know, you still liking girls and all?" "That's what this is about?" "Please , don't get mad at me!" Travis said, his voice cracking, near to tears. Josh tried to hold back a giggle, but couldn't. "You butthead!" he laughed, reaching for Travis and pulling him close. "You mean everything to me," he whispered as he hugged him, "no girl could ever come close." Travis pulled back so he could look into Josh's eyes. "Do you really mean that?" he asked softly. "Totally," Josh smiled. Travis snuggled up and moved toward Josh until their lips touched. The kiss was tender and loving. Travis sighed, "I practically drove myself nuts last night," he whispered. Josh grinned, "What about your nuts?" Travis gave him a disapproving look, and then grinned. They held each other for a couple of minutes as Travis settled himself down. Then Josh stood back. "I have to tell you about the dream I had last night," Josh laughed. He talked about a space station, being weightless, strapping themselves in, and everything they had done, sucking, fucking, the works. He also told him how he woke up wet and sticky. Travis laughed. "So, have you ever thought about us doing stuff like that?" Josh asked shyly. "What? Being weightless and floating around a space station?" he teased. Josh punched him hard in the arm. "Ow, I hate when you do that!" Travis whined as he rubbed his shoulder. "I was talking about us doing other stuff!" Josh scolded. "Well, you're already in every one of my jerk off fantasies!" Travis giggled, "So if you think about it that way, we've already pretty much done everything there is to do." Travis grinned. "Do you want to try some of that stuff for real?" Josh blushed. "What? Fucking?" Travis giggled again. "Yeah," Josh laughed. "I would with you," Travis said softly, looking deep into Josh's eyes. Josh smiled, "Yeah, me too." It was quiet for a moment. "So, let's do it!" Travis said with a twinkle in his eye. "Are you serious?" Josh grinned. "Totally!" "Okay, but if we do, we have to do it right! Condoms and all that stuff they talked about in school!" Josh blushed, "You know, safe sex?" "Yeah, like mom told me when I was little, `make sure you wear your raincoat,'" Travis joked. They stood in the shed grinning at one another, trying not to laugh. "I have to get back to work!" Josh finally said. They kissed one last time. As Josh headed out the door, Travis made a playful grab for his rear end. Josh turned, "Hey," he giggled, "hands off! You're the one that's going to get it in the ass!" Travis rolled his eyes and grinned. * * * * When Josh and Travis walked back onto the dock, Drew gave them a quick look. "I see you forgot the saw!" he said dryly as the guys froze. Josh looked at Travis. "We're friends, okay?" Travis said firmly, "We just needed to talk for a couple of minutes." "Didn't your mother teach you not to talk with your mouth full? Drew taunted. "What's that supposed to mean?" Travis shot back. "Well, you're the cocksucker, you tell me!" Drew answered. Travis shot Drew a fiery look. Travis tensed, ready to pound Drew, but Josh stepped in front of him, and, using both hands, pushed him back off the dock. "No, you're not doing this!" Josh warned, putting his whole weight into keeping Travis from jumping Drew. Travis was fuming, staring at Drew and trying to push Josh away at the same time. He finally gave a shove and Josh tumbled off to the side. Travis made for Drew. A moment later, Travis heard Josh's pained cry. He turned to look, and saw Josh rolling on the ground, holding his arm. Something was wrong! Terribly wrong! "Aaaaaahh!" Josh yelled, clearly in pain. "Oh God," Travis whispered, and ran to him. "I hit the rock!" Josh cried, tears streaming down his face, glancing in the direction of a large bolder. Through the confusion, Travis saw that Drew had a surprised look on his face. "Stay with him!" he yelled at Drew. To Josh he said, "I'll get your mom!" and took off running. * * * * Two hours later, Josh looked down at the fiberglass cast which covered his left arm from just above the wrist to near his shoulder. "I'm so, so sorry," Trav said through his tears. Josh couldn't forget his mom's words when she had made it to where he sat crying on the ground. "Growing up with three brothers, I've seen enough broken bones to know a fracture when I see it." She had said, and then she and Trav had helped him to the car. The twenty miles to the hospital had seemed like two hundred to Josh. As his mom finished the paperwork, Josh sat on the exam table. "Dad's going to want to know what happened," Josh said to Trav. "It was all my fault!" Trav said quietly. "We can't tell him what it was really about!" "No, I'll tell him I slipped and knocked you over." Josh nodded, but then another thought occurred to him. "What about Drew? He's probably already told Dad." "Shit!" Trav said softly, "We're fucked!" It was quiet on the ride home, both boys unsure of what awaited them. * * * * Josh's Dad walked up from the dock as Mrs. Danielson pulled the car up to the house. The boys got out slowly, giving each other a worried look. "Broken, huh?" Josh's Dad said as he reached the car. "Yeah," Josh said softly, "I'll be like this for six weeks," he said raising his arm and showing off the cast. "Drew told me what happened," His Dad said, looking at Trav, "he said you told Drew to be careful because of the wet grass, and he didn't listen. So, when he slipped, he knocked Josh over." Josh and Trav looked at one another in surprise. "Ah, yeah," Josh stammered, "but it really wasn't Drew's fault." His Dad nodded. "Well, accidents happen!" Looking at Travis, "I think it would be a good idea if you headed home." Trav nodded, "Yes, Sir!" Josh spent the rest of the day inside. The pain pills the doctor had given him made him a bit sleepy. * * * * The next day Josh looked for Drew. He had to find out why he had lied to his Dad. Not that he minded, but he needed to know why. He finally spotted him by the burn barrel, slowly feeding trash into the fire. "Hey," Josh said softly as he walked up. "How's your arm?" "Still hurts, but its better than yesterday." Drew fed in some more paper. "Why did you tell my Dad that story?" Josh asked. Drew was quiet for a moment. "It was partly my fault." "Partly?" "Okay, it was mainly my fault," Drew admitted. Neither boy spoke for a minute. "Why are you always so mean to me?" Josh finally whispered. Drew looked down, "I guess I learned it from my Dad," he said sadly. "Huh?" "It's tough living at my house," Drew mumbled. "Dad's drunk most of the time, and he's yelling all the time." Drew paused. "You get your ass whupped, but at least you know your Dad cares, and wants you to grow up right. Mine just thinks I'm in the way." Drew stared into the barrel. "Look, I'm sorry, okay?" Josh waited until Drew turned to him again, and then looked into his eyes, "Okay!" They stood for a few minutes more watching the fire. Then Josh decided it was time to leave. As he turned, Drew gave him a strange look. "Josh?" Drew called out. "Yeah?" Josh turned back to face him. "I really like you!" "What?" Josh replied, more confused than ever. "Since the fourth grade. That one day when we went to the science museum, remember?" Josh nodded uncertainly. "The teacher paired us up and made us "buddies" for the day. Josh nodded again, vaguely recalling the trip. "We joked around and you held my hand on the bus? That's when I knew I wanted you to like me." Josh was stunned. "Josh, I'm like you, I like boys too!" * * * * Trav stopped over that night, and Josh told him about Drew. Josh could see Trav was just as surprised at hearing the news as he had been, shaking his head in disbelief. As they lay on the floor in Josh's room, Trav snuggled close. "He was jealous!" Trav said softly. "He was probably trying to get you to notice him, and then I came along." Josh groaned, "The dumb fuck, why didn't he just say something instead of trying to make me feel bad?" "Some guys don't know how to talk about what they feel I guess." "So they just act like jerks?" "Yeah," Trav laughed, I've met more than a few of those. "It's sad, who knows, you might have even had him for a boyfriend!" Trav teased. Josh was tempted to punch him again, but laughed instead. The guys were quiet for a bit. "There is one thing though," Josh said with a devilish grin, "Drew's got a car!" "Yeah, when it runs!" Trav laughed. "But think about it, maybe he'd drive us all around." Trav nodded, "Not a bad idea. You think he'd do it?" "With the right motivation," Josh snickered, "we might have to find him a boyfriend!" "Is your whole school gay?" Trav laughed. "No!" but then Josh thought a second; "well I don't know!" he laughed. Trav was in a playful mood. He rolled Josh over onto his back. He stared into his eyes, and then leaned down for a kiss. Josh blushed, and tenderly opened his mouth wider. They kissed softly for a few minutes, with Trav gently running his fingers through Josh's hair. After a bit longer they stopped and stared at one another. "Will you help me with my telescope?" Josh whispered, still looking deeply into Trav's eyes. "I'd love to look at the stars tonight." "Sure," Trav said softly. "You need help with anything else?" he giggled raising his eyebrows. Josh laughed, "No, I use my other hand for that!" * * * Josh was back at work the next day and did reasonably well, all things considered. Trav apparently felt guilty about being the one that pushed Josh causing his accident, and he showed up offering to share some of his chores. "I have an idea," Trav whispered as the two worked stocking canned goods on the shelves in the resort's store. "About what?" "About how we can get the stuff we need." "What stuff?" Josh asked, puzzled. "You know, like they say in school, "stay safe?" Josh snickered. "Do you always think with your dick!" Trav smiled, "Only about 90% of the time, the other 10% I'm eating, sleeping, or taking a shit!" Josh giggled. "So what's the plan?" "I can't tell you, I want it to be a surprise, but you'll know when it happens." Josh rolled his eyes, "The things I have to put up with!" he thought to himself and grinned. * * * * Thank you to everyone that has written and offered suggestions or comments.
