DEAR DIARY By Stan Chapter One (In my last series called "One Big Happy Family" (11/24/00 in Young Friends), I introduced some of the members of a pen pal club I created for the subjects of my first series called "Matt and Mike" (3/24/00 in Young Friends). In this story, you will meet Brian and Nate, who were in OBHF, and new members Matt from England, Dave and Bruce from the US, and Jamie from Australia. Dave and Bruce will have their own story coming next called "You Can't Go Back". All other characters mentioned here are made up. In "You Can't Go Back", you will see true scenes from all of our lives, and hopefully, the message will be conveyed. You will find out we aren't always "One Big Happy Family" like I hoped we would be. You will also get to meet Ozy from England, Mathieu from Canada and Jimmy from the US, who were also in OBHF, Frikki from Iceland, and Cameron from Australia. Maybe even Christian, who is too old to be in our group, but helps us all the time. Maybe we should make him a member, anyway. Nuff talk! On with the story. Hope you enjoy it!!!) Monday, July 31, 2000 Dear Diary: I don't know what I hate most, packing or unpacking. Right now it is unpacking, because that was exactly what I was doing. I'm taking a break from unpacking right now to add this to my diary. I am in my new small bedroom in our rented small house, unpacking all my old stuff. I was having so much fun, I could hardly stop myself from laughing out loud. Or maybe screaming!!! I am an only child, 12, almost 13 years old. My parents had called me into the living room one day and told me that they were getting a divorce and Mom and I were moving closer to where she worked. I really hadn't had a clue that they might divorce. Sure, they had arguments, but it seemed like they had always had those. I just thought that all married couples argued from time to time. But, I was shocked. They explained that they just didn't love each other any more, and it had nothing to do with me. My Dad told me that we would still see each other a lot, and I could stay with him on weekends. I knew that would never happen, as we hardly ever did anything together now. So, Mom and I packed up all our stuff, Dad packed his, and we all moved to our new houses. The old one was put up for sale. My Mom promised that I could keep seeing my old friends, but I knew that wasn't likely to happen either. We were moving to the other side of town, and would be almost 40 miles from our old house. Tuesday, August 1, 2000 Dear Diary: All my stuff is finally put up. My Mom said it is the first time in years that my room is clean. Ha ha, very funny. OK, I know I keep it messy most of the time, but now isn't exactly the time I want to be kidded. I'm in a strange place, and don't know anybody. Mom keeps saying I will find some new friends soon. I sure hope so. Mark called. He was my old best friend. He couldn't talk long, though. His parents didn't want him tying up the phone for a long time. I thought that I would lose contact with all my old friends, and now this proves I was right. Thursday, August 3, 2000 Dear Diary: I have been here for four days and still have not met any new friends. There is no one my age on my block that I have found. It is totally opposite my old neighborhood, where there were lots of kids on my same block. I have started riding my bike around, since I have nothing else to do. At least I am getting used to the new area. I saw two kids about my age shooting basketball in their yard a few streets over, and I rode by several times hoping they would invite me to shoot with them, but they didn't. I know they looked up as I rode past several times, but they didn't say anything. I told Mom about it, and she said I should go up and introduce myself, but I am kind of shy until I get to know someone, and don't feel comfortable going up to someone I don't know. What if they said `No way, get the Hell out of here, kid`. I would die of embarrassment. Maybe I will find a friend tomorrow. Saturday, August 5, 2000 Dear Diary: Well, today is day six. Still no friends. What should I do, sit down in front of TV on a Saturday and watch cartoons all day? That is what Mom suggested. I am almost 13 freaking years old. I don't want to watch cartoons. I want to be with my friends out somewhere. Course, I don't have any. I really hate this place. Mom also had another great idea. Go over where I saw the kids playing basketball, go up and ring their doorbell, and ask if they could come out and play. `Come Out and Play!` Yeah, that would work. Go up to someone's door who I have never met and ask if they can COME OUT AND FUCKING PLAY!!! That way, they could know that not only am I a total loser, but I am also the king of the geeks!!! THAT would be a great way of establishing my reputation in a new place!!! That would be like going to school in a pair of really frilly girl's panties the first day we had to dress out for PE. GREAT way to establish your rep. And a guy's rep was very important, especially when you were almost 13. I sure didn't want to start out my life at the new school with everyone picking on me and beating me up. Well, I really don't have to worry about being beaten up in school. At least I do have that going for me. I did ride my bike over where I saw the two boys playing basketball again. They were out there again, shooting. Did I go up an introduce myself? NO WAY!!! I am a wimp, when it comes to meeting people!!! I rode by maybe four or five times, just watching them have fun, and wishing I was with them. I kept telling myself to ride up and talk to them, but did I??? NO FUCKING WAY!!!! I am sooooooo stupid, sometimes!!!! The first good thing did happen today, though. FINALLY!!! I have been taking karate since I was seven. I made first degree black belt in April. We found another really good karate studio today, and I talked to the owner. Now that we have lost Dad's income, Mom had already told me that we couldn't afford many lessons any more, so I worked out a deal where I would help out beginning students in exchange for my fees. The owner was very happy with the deal, and so was I. At least I now have something to do with my spare time. And, it is close enough I can get there on my bike. I might just start spending all my time there! Monday, August 7, 2000 Dear Diary: Today was my first day working out at the karate studio, and I actually met a couple of boys I will go to school with. We might end up being friends, even though they do live a long way away. At least I will know someone when I start 8th grade next week. Last year of middle school before high school next year. At least I know someone here. YEA!!! Wednesday, August 9, 2000 Dear Diary: We went school clothes shopping today. Big fucking deal!!! I couldn't get anything I really wanted. Mom said it all cost too much, and we really had to watch our money now. She wouldn't even let me get boxer shorts this time, as I knew everyone on the planet my age was wearing them instead of briefs. She saw that two pair of boxers cost as much as a special seven pack of briefs, and it was Fruit of the Loom time for me again. Fuck it!!! It really wasn't worth arguing over. Who really cares about what kind of underwear you wear, anyway? No one was going to be paying attention while I changed clothes. At least she did let me get a pair of Nike's I really wanted. If I have to choose between designer shoes and designer underwear, shoes will win every time. Sunday, August 13, 2000 Dear Diary: Sorry I haven't written for a few days. I have been really busy at the karate studio. I am trying to get in more free work before school starts. Then, I can't spend as much time there as I can now, and all I may be able to do is go for my class where I train. The owner has been very understanding, and I can help out more during weekends. I still haven't met anyone that lives near me, and THAT SUCKS!!!! We have been here nearly two weeks now. I really need to find some friends around here near my own age. First day of school is tomorrow. This is the first time in my life I am looking forward to going back to school. Monday, August 14, 2000 Dear Diary: I don't know where to start. This has been the most incredible day of my life. I don't know if I can tell the story. I think it went like this. I got my schedule. I went to all my classes. NO ONE talked me to me all day. In ANY of my classes. I was so disappointed. I sat by myself at lunch. It was no different than anything that had happened to me over the last two weeks, other than at karate. And I didn't see either of the two guys I had met there all day. I was extremely depressed. After school was over, I was confused over a homework assignment in my math class, which was the last period, so I stayed behind to talk to my teacher. GREAT!!! Homework first day!!! Everything in my life was just wonderful right now!!! Before I walked home, I decided to go to the bathroom first. I walked in, and stopped dead in my tracks. One boy who looked near six feet tall had a smaller boy held in front of him with his hand over his mouth so he wouldn't scream. Another boy about six foot tall was trying to get his shorts off his feet. They had already taken off his shirt, so all he had on was socks, shoes, and briefs. The boy had a huge look of fear in his eyes, as our eyes met for a second. "What the fuck are you doing to him?" I yelled. "What business is of yours? We are stripping him and then we are going to throw him out in the hall and see how fast he can run home without any clothes on. You want us to give you the same treatment? You better get the Hell out of here if you know what is good for you," the main guy said. Now, in the last two weeks, I had my parents file for divorce, lost all my old friends, had ABSOLUTELY no new friends, and it looked like I might never have any friends. I had been feeling really sorry for myself, and something just snapped. "You aren't going to do that to him, and I am not leaving," I said, taking my backpack off my back and laying it on the floor. He left the boy's shorts at his ankles, and walked towards me. "I have never seen you before. You must not know about me. Either get the fuck out of here or I am going to kick your ass all over this bathroom. If I do, we might have two naked boys running around the halls." "Look, I don't want to fight you if I don't have to. I feel obligated to tell you that I am a black belt in karate. I have been here two fucking weeks, and I don't have any friends. I don't know anybody! I am in a really pissed off mood, so you and your buddy better just let him go and get out of here, or I don't know what I will do," I said, as I got ready for his charge. And charge it was. He was lots bigger than my 5'4" and 125 pounds, and he ran towards me. I was ready, and kicked him right in the chest, causing him to fall backwards. I thought that it might be all over, but he got up and pulled out a knife and opened it. "I am going to kill you for that," he said, as he started walking closer. "Andy, don't," the other boy yelled, who was holding the smaller boy. "He isn't going to get away with that," Andy screamed, as he lunged at me. I pivoted, and blocked his lunge with the knife. I threw him up against the bathroom wall, and landed an elbow to the back of his head, knocking him down. Let's see. He has a knife. I don't have anything. He attacked me with the knife. I have witnesses. He is a first class ass hole. I didn't hesitate. He started to get up, and I kicked him right in the face. He went down and started screaming. The knife went skidding across the floor. When he didn't move, I got a paper towel out of the dispenser and used it to pick up the knife and put it in the waste container. I had seen `Con Air`. My fingerprints weren't going to be on it. "Let him go. NOW!!" I screamed. My blood pressure was pounding in my ears. This wasn't over. There were two of them. He let the other boy go, and slowly circled towards me. He looked scared, but wasn't going to give up. I looked at the smaller boy. "Get dressed as fast as you can. Now, you," I said addressing the other thug. "You have two choices. You can strip naked and run for it, or you and I are going at it. What is it going to be?" "I......I.....can't do that!!! What if someone sees me?" he asked loudly. "Isn't that what you wanted him to do? Isn't that fair? That is your choice. Give me your best move, or start stripping," I answered. His eyes blazed, and he charged me. This guy was nothing. He was clearly a follower, not a leader. I had no trouble at all pivoting and throwing him to the side, straight into all the wash basins. His head hit one, and he went down in a heap. Fight over!!!! The other kid pulled up his shorts, fastened them, and then ran over to me. "Thanks a lot. I will pay you back, I swear," he said as he threw his arms around me and hugged me tight. That caught me totally off guard, and it was a few seconds before I recovered and returned his hug. That is the way they found us. Someone outside the bathroom had heard all the noise, and the principal and security guard came bursting into the bathroom to find me holding a slightly shorter boy without a shirt on, hugging, in a school bathroom. Needless to say, we were both pretty embarrassed. "What is going on here?" the principal shouted. "I came in and these two were stripping him naked and were going to throw him out in the hall and leave him. I stopped them. This one," I said, pointing to the boy who was writhing in pain near the door, "pulled a knife on me. It is in the trash container. I didn't touch it, except with paper towels." "You saw `Con Air` too, huh?" the security guard asked. I just smiled. "Yeah. He can tell you the rest," I said, as I let the other boy go and he stood up between them. Ok, I will make a long story short, OK? The police were called. Should have been!!! They got the knife, and took both boys to jail who were attacking the boy who was getting stripped. We both ended up in the principal's office, and neither of us had done anything WRONG!!! "We're not in trouble, are we?" I asked. The principal just smiled. "No, you aren't in trouble. Actually, I am proud of you for what you did. I just want you to understand that we normally don't allow fighting in this school. If you had been in a fight for any other reason, you would be suspended for 5 days. Do you understand?" "Yes sir," I said weakly. "You are new here, aren't you? I don't even know your name," he said. "Yes sir, we just moved here. My name is Jamie Williams," I answered. "I'm Matt Price," the smaller boy said, offering me his hand. "Hi, Matt," I said as I smiled at him and shook his hand. "You two didn't know each other at all, yet you stuck up for him?" the principal asked. "Yes sir. I've been here two weeks and don't really know anybody yet. No one talked to me all day today. I saw what they were doing, and just let my anger get the best of me. I'm sorry, I'll try for it not to happen again," I answered. "You do that," the principal said, smiling. "You boys can go now." Matt and I both got out of there as fast as we could. "Jamie, did you really mean it that you don't know ANYONE else here?" Matt asked. "Yeah. It kind of sucks, you know?" I answered. "Well, you know me now. I want us to be friends, so you can't get rid of me now, even if you wanted to. Tomorrow, I will introduce you to all my friends. I think we are in most classes together. Can I see your schedule?" he asked. "Sure," I said, handing it to him. "Wow, we are in all of our classes together. We have the exact same schedule. You must be pretty smart," he said. I blushed slightly. I didn't want to brag, after finally finding a new friend. "Well, I am in all the advanced classes. But, you are, too." "I know. I am pretty smart, I guess. As small as I am, I had better be smart or I wouldn't have much going for me." "You're not that small." "Well, I didn't have a chance with those two that got me in the bathroom. Either one of them could have stripped me by himself. It was really easy, with both of them going after me at the same time." "Two against one in any case isn't fair, and you know it." "I know. I was just really embarrassed by it, you know? At least you stopped them before they took off all my clothes and threw me out in the hall. I really didn't have a clue what I was going to do. I thought maybe I would go and hide in a classroom until they left, but I didn't want to take the chance that they would take my clothes with them. I didn't want to run for an exit, because who knows who could have been outside right after school. It could have been a bunch of girls or a woman teacher. I really thought that I didn't have a chance to get away from them, and if you hadn't come up when you did, I would have been out in the hall within 30 more seconds. I really owe you a lot, you know that?" I blushed again. I have to get over being this shy. "If you want to pay me back, just be my friend, OK? I really need one right now." "THAT is NOT a problem!! Like I said, you can't get rid of me now, even if you wanted to. Where do you live, anyway," Matt asked, as we walked outside. I told him and he said, "That is only three blocks from my house. Come over to my house, OK? I want to introduce you to my two brothers. We are all really close, and I know they will want to be your friends, too. You will have three new friends after today, and tomorrow you will have lots more. You just wait. Just leave it to me." "Don't tell anybody about what happened, OK?" "No WAY!!! You are a hero. I am going to tell EVERYBODY!!! Telling them will make you so many friends, you won't feel like you do any more. You are going to be really popular. Those two guys have been giving lots of smaller kids grief for a long time. Everyone is going to be so glad they are gone from our school. You just wait. Leave it to me, OK?" he asked. I looked at him, blushing a-DAMN-gain, and saw he was beaming. "OK." "Come on. It isn't far to my house. I think you are going to really like my two brothers. They are both very cool. Brian is 14, almost 15, and Bruce has just turned 11. We may all adopt you. I think it is time we all had a new brother. You know, you look like a kid who was riding his bike past our house over and over. Was that you?" "You were outside playing basketball with your brother?" I asked, my eyes getting wide. "Yeah, Bruce. He is almost as big as I am. Both he and Brian are big for their age. So, it was you!! I thought so. Why didn't you just ride over and talk to us? We could have already been friends by now." Wow!!! How strange is this? Mom was actually right, for once. If I had gone over and asked if they could `Come Out and Play`, today might have been totally different. Matt and I probably would have been together after class, and the two hoods might not have jumped Matt if we had entered the bathroom together. Life can be really strange sometimes. Anyway, I am getting really sleepy. I am going to have to finish telling about today later on. To be continued. Like it? Hate it? Comments are appreciated and always answered. How long do you want the story to go? It isn't going to be 66 chapters like One Big Happy Family, that I can promise. Comments can be sent to fsw99@mindspring.com.
