I am trying to catch up. I am really tired, but I will try. All I can do. If I don't finish, I will completely catch up tomorrow. Yesterday, I thought all about everything that had happened to me over the last two days. I knew I had enjoyed everything that had happened, but it just confused me, you know? I had a long time to think, just walking slowly home, but it really didn't help. I was as confused as ever when I got home. I went to my room and tried to do my homework, but I just couldn't get my mind to focus for very long. I kept thinking about Matt. Also about Brian and Nate. They really seemed to love each other. I was sooooo confused!!! When I was in my old school and someone didn't like another kid, they called him gay or queer and made fun of him. They never did that to the real athletic kids. It was always someone that wasn't good at sports, or didn't fit in. I was always in the "IN" group, and though I didn't think I was one of the ones who tormented the others, I knew in my heart I certainly hadn't tried to stop it, either. I had laughed along with everyone else. And now I was one of "THEM". Not the ones that made fun of everyone else. I was one of the gay guys that everyone would make fun of. I was horrified!!!! I ate dinner as quick as I could, and then excused myself. My Mom let me go without any questions. I think she could tell I had a lot on my mind. I finished as much homework as I could, and put the books away. I just couldn't concentrate. All I could think about was Matt. And then the phone rang. I couldn't answer it. I just couldn't. I sat at my desk, hoping! Pleading! Let it be Matt!!! Let it be Matt!!! "Jamie, you have a phone call," my Mom said from downstairs. "OK, got it, Mom," I yelled as I picked up the receiver. "Hello?" "Jamie, it's Matt. I am really sorry how I acted today. Will you forgive me?" "Sure. It's not a big deal," I answered, as my heart finally started beating again. "Brian and Nate talked to me. They made me see that I had really rushed you. I am sorry. Will you come over and walk to school with me tomorrow?" "Sure. I would like that," I answered, my pulse rate getting back to normal. Finally, I had a smile start to creep onto my face. "Great. I would like that, too. I really want to be your boyfriend. If you need a couple of days to decide, who cares?" My heart fell to my stomach. "Matt, I don't know about the boyfriend thing." "WHAT???? YOU WON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT??? AFTER I HAVE POURED OUT MY HEART TO YOU??? WELL, FUCK YOU THEN!!!" All I heard was the phone go dead in my hands. All I could do is stare straight ahead, wondering what had just happened. I was totally confused. I decided to go to bed early. My Mom asked me what was going on the next morning. I hadn't been in bed at 9 o'clock since I was 9. The next morning, this morning actually. I ate breakfast quickly and decided to walk over to Matt's house and at lease see if he was still mad. Brian met me at the door and whispered, "He has calmed down now. I think everything will be fine." I wasn't sure about that, but I followed him into the kitchen. Matt was sitting at the table eating a bowl of cereal. "Hi Matt," he said, like nothing had happened the previous day. "Hi." I didn't know what else to say, so I didn't say anything. Matt finished his cereal about the time Bruce came downstairs with his books, and we headed over to Nate and Dave's house. No one was saying very much, and I could feel the tension in the air. I didn't want to start anything, so I just kept quiet. Nate and Dave ran out of their house when we got to their driveway, and no one was quiet any more. Nate even gave me a big smile, which made me remember yesterday, and I blushed again. Everyone laughed when they noticed, which seemed to clear the air once and for all. Looks like all of them knew what had happened and even Matt seemed in a better mood. Isn't there anything that all five of them don't all know? We got to school and we all split up. Matt and I headed for our home room. Neither of us talked much as we walked. I could tell he was still mad at me. But, what could I do? We sat down as roll was being called. We had come close to being late. Just as we had settled into our seats, the announcement over the intercom startled us both. "Jamie Williams and Matt Price, please come to the principal's office. Jamie Williams and Matt Price, come to the principal's office. ‘Oh shit!' I thought to myself. `He must have found out about the fight yesterday.' Matt and I just looked at each other, grabbed our books, and headed for his office. When we got out in the hall, Matt said, "I don't know why I have to go, too. I didn't do anything." "I know. It has to be about the fight after school yesterday. I will tell him all you did was hold my books. You didn't do anything at all." Matt smiled at me for the first time since yesterday before our fight. If you could call it a fight. "Thanks." he said. "No prob. After all, it is the truth." We finally got to the principal's office, and were told to sit down until we were called. We waited for maybe five minutes, getting more and more apprehensive as the time slowly passed. "Jamie and Matt, Mr. Walker will see you now, his secretary said. We got up slowly, heads bowed, like we were about to face our own execution. We walked in and he motioned for us to sit down as he closed the door. "Mr. Williams, I thought I had made myself very clear on Monday about fighting here at school," he said. "Uh, well, yes sir, you did. I can explain everything." "I am sure you can. And after you finish, then we can call both of your parents and have them pick you both up. I think a week suspension should make both of you think twice about fighting." "What? I didn't do anything," Matt said loudly. "He's right. If you want to suspend me, you can, but Matt didn't have anything to do with it," I said quickly. "If I want to, I can suspend both of you. Now, why don't you tell me what happened." Matt and I slowly told him the whole story, starting with what happened in the lunch room, and ended when I kicked Alex in the knee. The principal kept a very stern look on his face the whole time we were explaining. I knew we were both in deep shit!!! "That's exactly what my son Tad told me. I know Matt knows him. He said he also knows you Jamie." I looked quickly to Matt, who had a surprised look on his face. "The Tad you introduced to me Monday in front of school? Yeah, he was sitting at our table when Alex came up to me to start with." "Tad is my youngest son. He was also watching the fight. He told me that you tried everything you could do to not fight Alex, but he wouldn't listen." "That's right sir, Alex even threw several punches before Jamie did anything to him. Jamie just dodged them until he didn't have a choice but to fight back. He kept saying over and over he didn't want to fight him," Matt said. Principal White smiled for the first time. "Alex has been causing trouble here for several years. I told him last year that if he got into one more fight, he would be expelled from school, and I completed the paperwork this morning. He won't be coming back here ever again. Even after he gets the cast off his leg." "Oh God, I broke his leg?" I gasped. "You cracked his knee cap. We had to call an ambulance to come and take him to the hospital. I just can't have things like this happening in my school. You understand that, don't you?" "Yes sir," we both said at the same time, as we hung our heads, awaiting our punishment. "Can you promise me that no matter what, you won't get into another fight?" "Sir, I can't promise, but I give you my word that I will do everything in my power not to get into a fight here again," I answered. Principal White just smiled a little bit again. Well, at least he was warming up a little. "I have decided not to suspend either of you. But, I did tell you on Monday that if you got into another fight, you would be suspended for a week, didn't I?" I looked up and said, "Yes sir, you did. I just couldn't do anything about it. Alex said if I didn't meet him, he would just find me somewhere else, and I couldn't take the chance of him jumping me somewhere. If he got me down, I wouldn't have had a chance." "I understand. What do you boys think about a weeks detention after school? I can't just let you go without some kind of punishment. But, I don't want to suspend you, either." I smiled for the first time. At least I wasn't going to be suspended. "That is fine with me, sir, but Matt really didn't do anything wrong. All he did was come with me and hold my books. Can't you let him go?" "Would you rather have two weeks of detention by yourself or one week together?" "I'll take the two weeks by myself. It isn't fair for Matt to have detention for something he didn't do." "No, I'll take the week of detention, too. I could have come and told Mr. White about the fight before it happened and he would have stopped it, but I didn't. I have known him a long time. Tad and I used to be best friends, and I have spent the night at their house many times. I started to do that, but I just couldn't make myself come and do it," Matt answered honestly. "That's right, Matt. I know it would have been hard to come to me and tell on one of your fellow students, but someone could have really gotten hurt and maybe killed. They found a knife on Alex when they got him to the hospital. This could have easily gotten completely out of control." "Yes sir, you are right. I'm glad nobody but Alex was hurt," Matt answered. "You can both go back to class now. Report to the cafeteria after school for five days. And no more fights, you understand?" "Yes sir. Thank you sir," I answered. "Oh, and Jamie. One more thing." Matt and I had both gotten up and had tried to get out of his office as quickly as we could before he changed his mind. I reluctantly turned back around. "Yes sir?" "Tad has been after me to get him enroled in a karate class. Can you tell me which one you attend?" "Oh, yes sir, I can. I even have one of their cards with me. You can have it. It has my name on the back. Just tell whoever you talked to I recommended them. I help teach there, so I might can help Tad with his classes." I gave the card to Mr. White, and he thanked me for it. He was smiling when I left. This had gone lots better than I had hoped. Matt and I hurriedly left his office. We were both relieved it was finally over and we hadn't gotten suspended. "Thanks for helping. I'm sorry you had to get detention too," I said. "That's OK. Friends help each other, right?" I looked at Matt, who was smiling at me. I smiled back. "Yeah, that's right." "That was nice of you to give that card to Mr. White." "Well, it wasn't really. See, I get a commission on every person that comes to the studio that says I recommend them. I might actually make some money off of that card. That is why I always carry them with me." Both of us cracked up when I said that, and everything seemed to be over between us. We talked all the way back to our first class like we were best friends again. I guess we were. Everyone wanted to know what had happened, and we explained the best we could while changing classes. We didn't see Tad until lunch. He was already sitting at our table when we walked over with our tray of food. At least I think it was food. "Tad, thanks for your help. I really appreciate it," I said. Tad just looked up and quickly shook his head no. He didn't move his head very much, just very quickly back and forth, but I could tell by the look on his face he didn't want to talk about it right now. "No problem. What do you guys think we will have to do for gym today?" he asked, changing the subject. "I don't know, but I hope it isn't more running like yesterday," Matt answered. We changed the subject, and Matt and I finished eating quickly. Tad motioned for us to follow him outside, so we both did. We walked over to a secluded area near the fence, and Tad said, "Thanks for not saying anything in front of everybody else. I don't want it getting around that I run to my Dad with things about school, you know?" "I understand. But thanks for talking to him. I do really appreciate it. If there is ever anything I can do for you, just let me know, OK?" I asked. "You don't owe me anything, but I will keep that in mind," Tad answered. "All I did was tell Dad what really happened. You really didn't have much of a choice, because I know he would have jumped you sometime if you didn't fight him yesterday." "Yeah, that is what I thought, too. If he had gotten me on the ground, he would have beaten the shit out of me. But I do owe you. He told me Monday if I got into another fight, I would be suspended for a week, and my parents would have killed me." "OK, you owe me if that is what you want. All I want to do is be your friend. Matt and I have been friends for years. We were best friends for a long time. I really don't really know why we still aren't, but we just started hanging with other guys. But it looks like Matt has a new best friend now, right?" Tad asked. I looked at Matt and he looked at me and grinned. "Yeah, I guess so," he answered. "I thought so. You guys look like best friends. You seem to communicate with each other without speaking. Can I ask you both a personal question?" "Sure, I guess so, if Matt doesn't mind," I answered. "I want to ask Matt something first, OK?" Tad said, as he and Matt walked away a little bit. He whispered something into Matt's ear, and Matt just shook his head yes. I was puzzled as they walked back up. Tad was grinning slightly. "Look, I know this is none of my business, but if the three of us are going to be close friends, I just have to ask. How close friends are you two?" Tad asked. "Huh? What do you mean?" I asked, startled by his question. "I mean, are you two boyfriends?" Tad asked quietly. To be continued. Comments are appreciated and always answered. Comments can be sent to fsw99@mindspring.com and are forwarded to a group e-mail account so all the guys can read them too.
