He did not want to come on too strong to the freshmen because everyone, including the boy, would think that we would be gay. Devin knew from experience, but not first hand, that in high school, being a homosexual is a prescription for disaster. He had to devise a plan to become friends with the boy first, then progress from there. He would come onto the boy when nobody else would be around. Hopefully when the time did come, the boy would be cherishing Devin and accepting Devin's love for him and the boy would love Devin in return. Devin was still in the group with the beautiful young boy. He moved closer to the boy and said in a normal teenage boy greeting, "Hey, what's happening?" The boy responded, "Oh, nothing much. It's my first day here in this high school. It seems like a dump to me." While the boy was talking, Devin was looking at the boy attentively; all of the features he saw in the boy in his dream from the night before were the same. The long, dark hair, the fair skin with the freckles, the beautiful boyish face, the small frame. The boy had to be no more than one hundred pounds because the clothes that he wore were conspicuously falling right off of him. Devin thought that he could fit two of himselves in the boy's pants; they were that baggy. Devin also thought of being in the boy's pants while the boy was in them. Devin chuckled, "Yeah, well it's our dump. I remembered think that when I entered this room this time last year." Devin then paused and hesitated to say what he was waiting to ask, "Hey kid, what's your name? I don't know it yet." The boy responded without a bit of hesitation, "My name is Coleman Fleming." "That's a cool first name, Coleman. If you don't know me yet, I'm Devin Kelly." Devin thought to himself that he had to respond, because he wanted to become friends with Coleman. Instead, he was thinking to himself, "Coleman, what a beautiful name for my boy." Coleman interrupted Devin's daydream, "Devin, let's talk over by the corner." Devin was back in reality when he said, "OK, Coleman." When the boys were relaxing in the corner of the room, Coleman asked, "Devin, what instrument do you play?" "Well, last year I played bass drum. I remember that, and it was horrible, at least for me." Devin paused for a second, but Coleman wanted to know more so he continued, "I remember that it was very heavy and awkward, especially since I was a little freshmen back then. Even though I grew a bit, I know I have enough talent to move up." "That's great Devin, I don't know what instrument I am going to play." "Coleman, you might follow my tracks, but if you practice enough, you might move up. Who knows?" Devin gave Coleman a smile and a pat on the back. He wanted to be friends with Coleman in a quick amount of time. Then something came up that helped Devin's want. "Devin," Coleman said, "I think we are getting to know each other well already." Devin asked, "Coleman, do you want me to hang around with you? I'm sure you want an upperclassmen friend." Coleman said, "Sure Devin," Then he paused, and then got the idea, "Do you want me to be your friend? I'm cool with that because I don't have any new friends yet and you seem pretty cool yourself." Devin said, "Sweet. I have a new friend." Coleman gestured a hi-five, and Devin hi-fived Coleman for their new friendship. The good times that Coleman and Devin were having came to an abrupt end; the band director called everyone to his attention and said that the group was going outside for marching and maneuvering. This was the most dreadful thing to undergo for the upperclassmen. Devin did not try to think about the "M and M's" in such a horrible way. He said, "Coleman, since you know me the most, I can tell you how to do M and M's" "k." Coleman said. Devin took his water jug, his sunglasses, his baseball cap, and his sunscreen. Then he went outside with Coleman. While going outside, he acknowledged that Coleman did not bring anything outside with him. Devin felt guilty because Coleman was very fair-skinned and it was bright and hot outside. Devin said, "Coleman, if you want to, you can drink out of my jug and put on sunscreen. I don't want you to die out there. Now I have to look out for you." Coleman looked at Devin while going outside and said, "Thanks Devin, you're the greatest owner I've ever had." "I'm the only one you had fool!" Then Devin placed his arm over Coleman's shoulders. Right before they were heading outside, Devin took out his sunscreen and gestured to Coleman that he would apply the sunscreen on him. Coleman complied and he moved his fair skinned arms out so Devin could apply the sunscreen. Devin squirted a large amount of sunscreen from the bottle onto his left hand, but took a smaller amount of sunscreen by using his right hand. He coated Coleman's face, neck, and lower arms with the sunscreen. Devin rubbed in the sunscreen until it could not be visible. Devin also applied sunscreen on himself; he was still fair-skinned. Then the two boys went outside in the blinding sun. The humid, warm, late summer air struck them immediately when the door opened up; it was unusually warm for the late part of August. Devin and Coleman did want to be outside in this kind of weather, especially for band. Unfortunately, they had to be outside and it showed. They had no enthusiasm. Coleman complained, "Devin, it's so hot out here!" Devin responded, "I can't help it Coleman, this is probably the warmest that I have been outside for band," Devin responded, "but you are the one who wanted to wear those baggy green khaki pants." "I know that's foolish! I should just wear shorts for the rest of the week." "Yeah." Because of the heat and Coleman's clothes, Devin kept offering the poor froshie water throughout the morning session. The session seemed to drag on because of the walking and marching in the hot sun. Devin kept an eye out on Coleman during the period. When Devin could not stand to march another step, the session stopped for lunch. Coleman and Devin felt refreshed. "I'm glad that's over," Devin said. Coleman replied, "Me too, I couldn't move anymore." Devin asked, "It's lunch time do you want to eat anywhere in particular?" "I don't care, anywhere is good." "Ok, I will show a place." "K." Coleman and Devin walked down the street with a few of Coleman's freshmen friends to the sub shop down the road. While they were walking, out of the middle of nowhere, Coleman grabbed Devin really hard out of the congregation. Coleman must have put in all of his strength because Devin weighed about twenty-five pounds more than Coleman. Coleman looked excited and whispered to Devin's ear, "Devin it took me a while, but I remembered seeing you in band and in the halls back in my sixth and seventh grade years." Coleman gestured Devin to go away from the group even further and they continued to let the group go ahead even further. When the boys were alone enough Coleman whispered again, but this time he said, "What I also remembered was that you looked very cute. I had a big time crush on you, I dreamed of you and me doing it." When the statement ended, Devin had a fabergassed look on his face; his mouth looked like it would fall to the ground. Coleman's reaction to Devin's was nervousness and even a hint of fear because he thought that Devin, like many boys in America claim to be, to be anti-gay and beat him up for saying that he had a crush on him. Devin's expression changed slowly from appalled to delighted, it looked like as if he had a great idea to show to the world. Devin assuaged Coleman's fear, "Coleman, you look concerned, probably because you thought I would hate you, but I don't," Devin sighed then continued his speech softly so no one else could hear, "It took a lot of guts to say what you just said. As a matter of fact, I have a crush on you as well. As soon as I saw you this morning, I fell in love. I just did not want to show it yet because I didn't want to scare you." Coleman changed his feeling from fear to happiness. He found out that he was not the only boy in the world who had the same feelings that he did. Devin had an idea, "How about this Coleman, I own you right now. I was owned last year by one of my upperclassmen friends. Basically I look out for you but you have to follow me, it would be more fun than you would think." Coleman responded, "Devin, that's great, now we are like good friends already." "Yes we are Coleman, as a matter of fact," Devin whispered, "we're boyfriends." Coleman became astonished because Devin said to him that they had a love relationship. But since he was now owned, Coleman said, "Whatever you say Devin, you're my boyfriend now." Devin became excited by the thought that he now had a boyfriend to fill the void that Rachel left. Coleman looked around the area to check who was around. Since this was a little town, no people were on the streets, even during midday. Coleman saw nobody and kissed Devin on the cheek for what it seemed like a very long time for Devin. Because of Coleman's kiss, Devin's void was completely gone and Coleman would be the person who Devin was going to love for a long time to come. Devin then looked right at Coleman and kissed him on the lips for an instant and withdrew back. The feelings they had for one another were so strong. However, it was not the right time to show affection for one another because this was all taking place in the middle of board daylight. Then Coleman said, "Come on Devin, we need to catch up and eat." Devin said, "OK, let's go!" Devin and Coleman ran off to catch up to the freshmen.
