The following story is about a boy and his family owning a low diver sub in the Florida coast.

Chapter 6 Batten down the hatches.

After we had enjoyed our time at the nudist resort we returned home and relaxed enjoying home life again. My brother Sonny ran to his room and clicked on his Facebook page and found a lot of friend requests.

The crew had to take off as soon as we had the two subs in the sheds. "Right, first off we have to pack all the tables and remove the chairs and store them in the shed and then remove the ticket booth and pop it into the shed." Dad yells.

We all start removing anything that would fly off and as we packed the ticket booth a gust of wind started to blow over us. `Looks like we are going to get some wind here?" Conner said as he grabbed the buckets and ropes we used to clean the subs and placed them into a large container.

"Yep, we are south of Orlando but you just don't know what the winds will do here." I replied. "Yeah James, it's like when you eat beans, you are full of wind." My brother Sonny giggled. I slapped his arm and sent him on his way. Dad and the crew are now lifting the subs out of the sea and we have cradles at the ready as we had train rails to push the subs into the large sheds we had built when we needed to store the subs.

Conner and Trip helped my mom with all the outdoor furniture that we had placed in the garden area where visitors waited to get on board our subs. After what felt like hours we had finished storing all the gear, had removed the ticket booth and placed all the gear that was around the pens into storage.

"That's it guys, we have done our best to store anything that would fly off in the winds and now we have to return home and get the window shutters closed and locked." Dad told us.

Our friends then returned home and began to sort out their own areas. As we all were close to the beach we had to make sure no water could get into the house. Dad had ordered a lot of sand bags and we began to place them around the house. Dad placed a thick cover over the pool and strapped it down. We had lockable shutters over the windows so we all made sure they are all closed and locked in place.

Anything that was able to be picked up is placed in the basement of the house. "That's it boys, we can't do anymore but wait for the hurricane to come to us." Dad announced.

"Ok dad." We replied and went to our rooms where we sat and waited for the winds to blow over us. Mom had made sure we have plenty of food in the pantry and that we had extra batteries and other hurricane stuff at the ready.

Our house is well built and has been made almost hurricane proof. "Oh wow, the winds are getting louder now." Sonny gasped as he sat with me in my room. The rain started to fall and did it make a noise on the roof.

The winds picked up as the hurricane began to move towards our town. The news is running non-stop reports about the hurricane and they told us where to go if in case we had to find a shelter to stay in.

"Now boys, stay in your rooms until we feel it's safe." Mom said as she had made us some snacks and brought a soda each for us to drink. The power went off and Dad turned on the outdoor generator that is connected to our power grid.

Trees began to sway as the winds picked up. A few trash cans began to roll down the roads as the owners forgot to bring them in. The suburb is now in darkness as the power grid is turned off as a lot of power cables are knocked down.

"It's getting closer." Sonny said as we felt the house shudder. "We will be fine Sonny, dad made sure the house is well protected and that we can survive a heavy storm." I replied. It is now half way through the hurricane and news is getting around that a lot of Dolphin cove has now some damage.

We held on during the night and sat in the lounge room as the walls shook but stayed in place. The brick building is well built and the roof is secured firmly so we would be safe here. Not so for Conner and his family.

We heard their home lost its roof after the hurricane blew past us. Being so close to the beach has its problems and that was they are so close to the sea and that their roof was not as good as ours.

So as the storm slowly went away we all got out and checked the house outside seeing some of the neighbor's fences and roofs on the ground. Large bits of trash now littered the roads.

"Holy cow, it's like we got hit bad here." Sonny gasped seeing some of the power lines on the road. Police and rescue workers began to door knock seeing if anyone needed any help.

As we stood outside Conner and Trip arrived with their parents as their home lost its roof and they are staying with us for a week or so. They had stayed in their basement and when the hurricane was weaker they walked out of the house and found their roof almost half a mile down the beach.

"OH wow, it's a bloody mess around here." Conner moaned as he held his suitcase. "Oh Conner come in and go to my room, Trip, you are staying with Sonny in his room." I said as my parents sorted out Conner's parents.

Choppers were now flying over the houses seeing what damage is done. News crews were also doing a report on Dolphin Cove and we watched the news on the TV seeing some homes totally destroyed.

The TV crew flew over our sheds and we spotted that no damage is done except for the pens. Some owners didn't bother to remove their boats so they were dumped onto the pens.

"Looks like the city has to come out and repair the pens." Dad said as we looked where we hooked the subs to the pens. "It's not that bad where we dock the subs, but some of the pens are well you could say stuffed." My mom announced.

"You can see where the sand has been removed though." Sonny quoted. "It will recover Sonny, we are safe and the subs are undamaged but we have to look after Conner's family until their home is fixed up." Dad said.

The news ended with reports of power being down for a few days and dad made sure we had plenty of gas to keep the generator going. Our guests are now settled in as all the hotels are fully booked or damaged so we welcomed our friends to our house.

"Conner, come and help the guys sort out the pool." His mom said as we began to pull the pool cover off the pool and began to clean out the leaves and trash that got caught under the cover.

"Get your gear off and start pulling the leaves out." I said as I dumped my shorts onto the deck chair and waited for the others to undress. Dad and mom plus Conner's parents began to sort out the wet clothes that Conner's parents had brought with them as their bedrooms were water damaged so their clothes needed washing again.

"This is not that bad, the sand didn't get into the pool and it looks like it's only leaves and twigs in the water." Trip said as he scratched his left nut sack. Mitchel from next door arrived and asked if we needed any help. His house is not damaged but he has no power.

"Mitchel go get your dad to bring any food that needs cooling as we have room in our freezers." My mom told Mitchel. He took off and headed to his house and returned with two large plastic bags with meat in it. A name tag is on the top of the bag. "Dad said that's all the meat we have." Mitchel said as he then helped around the front and back gardens.

The sounds of chainsaws could be heard as work crews began to remove downed trees. Some roads were closed due to downed trees. Our street had some trash on the roads so most of the dwellers came out to help remove the trash and place it in a pile ready for pick up.

We finished our chores and relaxed as we sat under the shade of a tree and sipped on our sodas. "That was a messy job." Sonny gasped as he checked his can of soda.

"Boys, you did an awesome job there." Dad said as he told us that a B.B.Q dinner would be set up in a few hours. "Come and play with me in my room Trip." Sonny said as he grabbed Trip by the arm and took off to my brother's bed room.

"So is your house banged up?" Mitchel asked Conner. "It's missing the roof, it tore off when the hurricane flew past us." Conner replied. "Oh wow, that will take time to get fixed." Mitchel announced.

"Dad called the insurance company and they said a crew would come and check the house and see what they have to do and then start repairing the roof." Conner told Mitchel.

"Oh that is looking good.' Trip announced seeing my dad and his dad cooking a lot of meat. Mitchel and his dad arrived as they had no way of cooking and the power is still off. Luck is a factor here in Dolphin Cove. Most of the dwellers have some sort of power but Mitchel's dad didn't think about getting a generator for emergences so he would get one when the mall opened up tomorrow.

"Smells good, what are you cooking dad?" Sonny asked as he and Trip stood by the large B.B.Q plate. "Steaks and chops and some bell peppers." Dad replied. "That sounds good to me." Trip grins as the younger boys head off and join us eating some snacks.

"So what have you two been up to as you were missing for a while?" Conner asked his brother. "Nothing much, just playing some games and checking the internet." Trip said as he fiddled with his skinless sausage.

Dad opens the shed doors and checks the two subs seeing no damage to the subs or the shed. A shed by the water's edge is a right off. The roof is torn off and their boat is under the water.

"Right, looks like we survived the hurricane here but a few of the boats are damaged or sunk so we will start to put the subs back into the pens tomorrow as we have to find if the crew can come here tomorrow." Dad said as he looks around seeing that all of our gear is still safe and dry in the sub shed. We returned to the mall where we had to see if any food has been brought in as a panic buying before the storm made everyone go into a panic buying in the shops and now we needed more food as we have more mouths to feed.

Conner and his family drove to their home seeing a huge blue tarp over their house and checked inside seeing their furniture all wet. They returned to our house with some extra food they brought out of their home.

"So boys, it looks like we have bread and milk and some other food but it looks like we have to wait another day before the shelves are restocked." Mom announced as we walked to the car and put the food into the trunk and returned home.

Large yellow trucks are now milling around the streets picking up the trash and they had to use front end loaders to remove the damaged trees.

"Right boys, go and relax as we sort out what we are having for dinner." Mom told us. Conner and his family are in the kitchen putting the cans of food they saved and helped mom put away the food they bought at the mall.

I was so happy to dive on the new wrecks as we found old cannons, a few anchors and a old navy ship that was covered up in sand and crap and now half of the navy ship from ww2 is now on show for the first time. Dad got the rights to dive on them as we didn't disturb the wrecks with our subs.

ON the weekend we had over 100 visitors waiting to dive on the newest wrecks as news quickly hit the news that we have the rights to dive there. I was in the newest sub with Gary and Sonny and Dexter are in the older sub. We made sure that water and snacks are ready for the guests and that the sub is cleaned after every trip.

Nikko will be needed tomorrow as we are having 50 Japanese visitors visiting us and as Nikko can speak better Japanese than what the captain could he was asked to attend the dive on Sunday. He would be paid $20 per trip.

"Wake up boys, time to hit the subs, we have paying guests waiting for us." Dad yelled as he knocked on our bedroom doors. Conner and Trip are on the booths taking the tickets and serving snacks while the visitors waited for their dive.

Mom had breakfast ready and in a flash we ate our meals and then headed to the sub pens. The sub crew is there waiting for us to come aboard. "Good morning everyone." Dad said as Conner and Trip organized the guests handing out their tickets to their subs. No 1 sub has a blue ticket and No 2 sub has a red ticket.

Bottled water is handed out to the guests as the sub makes your skin dry to the air we use in the sub. So bottled water is handed out. The ticket prices cover the cost of the bottled water.

Dad and his crew are now getting ready to slip out of the pen. Me and Gary are going with my dad and Sonny and Dexter are going into the other sub.

It is about one and a half hours trip under the water. Dad added an extra half an hour due to the new wrecks that were now exposed so we had to have extra time to visit the area. "Boys, close the hatch." Dad said as I went to the hatch door and sealed it ready to dive.

The sub would be on the surface for 10 minutes so we could move faster to the dive site. Then as we got closer to the wrecks we would then dive and show the guests the view under the water. Dolphins would come and swim around the subs and would try to see who is inside the subs.

"Oh look daddy, there is a dolphin looking at us." A small boy said as he jumped around on his seat seeing the dolphin circling around our sub. The sounds of cameras soon filled the sub as guests began to take photos of the fish and dolphins swimming around the subs.

He thanked my dad for allowing him to see where is brother is still buried as the ship sank so quickly that only a few crew members survived the storm.

Then we moved to the old wooden ships that now only have their cannons left and a few cannon balls. You could see the ballast stones that littered the bottom of the ocean and then the old cannons. We returned back to the pens and everyone is happy with their dive. A few of the guests handed over donations to save the dolphins as that is why the name of the town is called Dolphin Cove, due to the dolphins making their home there.

IT was one hell of a day and tomorrow will be harder as we have two large groups of Japanese visitors and Nikko will be busy telling the guests what they would see when we dived on the wrecks. Conner and Trip will be on no 2 sub as it was there turn to help out.

"Oh man, I am so tired." Gary moaned as he wiped the last seat before we locked up the subs. I was looking forward to dinner and then a dip in the pool. "It was a great day Gary' I did see you received a few tips today?" I said as all tips we received are kept by the receiver.

"Yeah, one dad said I looked after his son when he was about to throw up and I made him relax and got him to drink some cool water, that fixed the kid up and the dad gave me a $10 tip." Gary grinned.

"Well I am pooped so we will see you at school on Monday." I replied as we dropped Gary and Dexter off at their home and then drove to our house.
