"Hopefully we won't need this, but better safe than sorry," he commented as slipped on the head unit of the radio I had laid on the hood, and walked toward the slick hillside. "Ready when you are," I said as I slipped my radio over my head and I turned my collar up to keep out some of the wind and sleet. "Feed me the rope, nice and slow," I heard over my earphone. I started feeding the rope through the hook slowly as I felt him work his way down the hill. "OK, I'm at the car," I heard finally. I let about another five feet of slack out in the rope, so he would have enough room to move around, and tied it off. "Anybody in there?" I asked him over the radio. "Looks like two people, I'm going to try to get into the car and see if they are hurt," he said. "The door is jammed closed, feed me some more rope, I'm going around to the passenger's side." I untied the rope, and slowly let it out, as I felt him moving around the car. When he quit pulling, I again let out about five extra feet to give him maneuvering room, and tied it off. "What do you need in the way of gear?" I asked, preparing to get blankets, and other gear that he might need to get the people up the hill. "Bring me 3 harnesses, I don't think they are injured, just cold and scared," he said through the radio. I could hear him talking to the people in the car, but couldn't make out their responses. "Go ahead and call it in on the cellular, accident, no injuries, victims being brought back up the hill, and see what they want us to do." "OK, city or sheriff's department?" I asked, not sure if we were still in the city limits or not. "Sheriff's department, we are about a half mile out of the city limits," I heard in response. "I'll call it in, then be down with the gear," I said, not looking forward to going down that slick hill, even with a rope attached. As I picked up the cellular phone in the Land Cruiser to call the sheriff's department, Mr. Jenkins, asked if anyone was hurt. "No, everyone's OK, just scared and cold. We are gonna bring them back up the hill, and see what the sheriff's department wants to do about the car. "This is Randy Hampton," I said as the dispatcher answered the phone at the sheriff's department. "I'm with my dad, on hwy. 324, about one half-mile south of town, we have a car off the road, and down the hill. No injuries, two passengers, which we are preparing to bring up the hill. What do you want us to do about the vehicle?" I listened to her instructions, and told her we would call in the other information, as soon as we had the victims safe and secure. "Nancy said lock it and tag it, and she will get someone out here as soon as she can to do an accident report," I told dad over the radio. "OK, bring an orange tag from the glove compartment, and harnesses for three plus yourself, and come on down here, and we will get these kids our of here, and into the Land Cruiser where they can warm up." "OK, Mr. Jenkins, I need a little bit of help here. I need you to make sure that my rope doesn't get tangled as I go down the hill. I will let the rope out myself, but just need you to make sure it doesn't get tangled up." I instructed him as I got the harness on and threaded the rope through my repelling gear. I grabbed a back-pack, dropped three more harnesses in it, and threaded my rope through the other hook on the front of the Land Cruiser. "OK, but be careful Randy. I hope you know what you are doing," she said worriedly. "I do, I've done this before, just never in weather quite this cold," I said as I handed him a radio. "Put this on, and I will tell you if I have a problem, but everything will be fine, and we will be back at our house in less than an hour. I'm on my way, brining an orange tag, and 3 harnesses," I said into my radio microphone. I quickly pulled off my warm gloves, and reached in my coat pocket for my repelling gloves, not as warm, but with much better traction for handling the rope. I let my rope out as I eased down the hill. Finally when I was even with the back of the car, I stopped and peeled the paper off of the orange sticker, and stuck it on the back window of the car. I worked my way around to the passenger's side of the vehicle where dad was and tied my rope off so I wouldn't slide any further down the hill if I slipped and fell. "OK, the harnesses are in the backpack, you get yours on, and I'll help them into theirs. As soon as he had his harness on, I attached him to my rope, and he started untying the rope from around his waist, and hooked it to my harness, since I would be staying down here, and be the last to come up. I opened the door to the car, and saw two teenage boys. "OK, my name is Randy, and we are gonna get you out of here and somewhere warm and dry. But first I need you to get out, one at a time, so we can get you into a harness so make sure you don't slide any further down the hill." I could feel dad unclipping the two extra ropes I had brought down, and clipping them to his harness. "What are your names?" I asked. "I'm Trent," said the older one, "and this is my brother Blake." "OK, Blake, lets get you ready first, since you are on this side. Get out of the car carefully, it is slick out here," I said as he started to ease out. "OK, just hold on to the door while I get this harness on you." By the time I had the harness on Blake, dad was already at the top of the hill, and looping the other two ropes through the hooks on the front of the Land Cruiser. "I'm ready up here, whenever you are," I heard through my radio. "OK, Blake, let's get you tied in, and up the hill," I said as I tied one of the loose ropes to his harness. "You ready?" I asked, hoping that he was because I was getting cold and wet. "I-I'm ready," he stammered "OK, you just hold on to the rope, and walk and let him pull you up the hill, it's not that far, and you will be nice and warm, in no time," I said, hoping he would be able to make it up the hill without falling. "OK, first one is ready," I said into my microphone. "I'm gonna start pulling him up," I heard over my radio, as I saw the slack being taken out of the rope attached to Blake's harness. "OK, Blake, just remember, let him do the pulling, and you just walk up the hill," I repeated, hoping he would hear me over the sleet and wind. As Blake started walking up the hill, I went back to the car, to get Trent into his harness. "OK, lets get you out of there, and ready to go up the hill," I said, motioning for him to get out of the car. "Lock the door on that side, and we will lock the door on this side when you get out, and don't forget to bring the keys." "I got the keys in my pocket, and the door is already locked," he said, sliding across the seat toward the passenger door. "OK, let's get you ready, because Blake is almost at the top," I said, looking up the hill at Blake, who was about 80% of the way to the top. "Get him into the Land Cruiser before he freezes," I heard dad say over the radio. "Blake is at the top, and dad is ready to start pulling you up, you ready?" I asked Trent. "Yeah, I guess," he replied as I fastened the rope to his harness. "We're ready down here, whenever you are," I said into my microphone, knowing dad was ready to start pulling him up the hill. "OK, he's gonna pull you up the hill, just let him do the pulling, and you just walk up the hill," I said to Trent. As I watched Trent go slowly up the hill, I was shivering, not only from the cold, but because I realized that these two were very lucky, they could have ended up hurt, or worse. Fortunately, all they ended up with was a slightly wrecked car, which could be repaired in a very short time. As I saw Trent disappear over the top of the hill, I knew that it was time for me to head back up too, so I got ready, and soon enough, I heard dad on my radio, telling me he was pulling me up. Chapter 5 With everybody in the Land Cruiser, it was a bit crowded, but we put Russ in the front with dad and his dad, and I rode in the back with Trent and Blake, making sure that they were OK, and just cold. I could hear dad talking to the sheriff's department again on the cellular phone, relaying information about the boys, and telling them that we were taking them to our house, and would call their parents, to inform them, and to make arrangements to get the boys home safely. As I hear him tell Nancy goodnight, he asks Trent how to get in touch with their parents. "We live in Buchanan, sir, the phone number is 555-7253. Our parents are Eric and Becky Lassiter, he replied to dad's questioning. "OK, I'm gonna call your parents, and let them know you are safe, and that they can come get you as soon as the roads clear, until then, you are welcome to stay with us." "Mrs. Lassiter, this is Chuck Hampton, you sons Trent and Blake were in a minor traffic accident. They are fine, but their car is off the road, and it will be several days before anyone will be able to get it out.... I spoke with the sheriff's department, and they assured me that they would keep an eye on the car, as soon as they could get anyone out here to check it, but the boys are with me now.... I would bring them home now, but there is a tree across the road, and I can't get through to Puryear.... When I spoke with the sheriff's department, I told them that the boys were welcome to stay at my house until the weather clears, and the roads are open.... No, it's no trouble, I have plenty of room, and have heat and food enough to last until spring if necessary. Would you like to talk to the boys?... OK, here's Trent." "Yes, mom, we are fine, just a little cold. I know we should have been home hours ago, but we went to take Scott, Blake's friend home, because he missed the bus. Mr. Hampton is being very nice, and we will be good, don't worry, mom. We'll see you as soon as the roads clear. I'll talk to you later. I love you too... here's Blake." As Blake talked briefly to his mother, and handed the phone back to dad, I could see the dread in their faces, not knowing what the next few days would bring. "Relax, we've got plenty of room, and you won't have to worry about anything. Just get warm, and have fun," I said, trying to put them at ease with what I knew was an uncomfortable situation. As we pulled into the driveway, I could see their spirits starting to lift, as they finally started to get warm, after being in the cold for several hours. As dad opened the garage door, and pulled in, and closed the door behind us, I could see the relief on their faces. It wasn't going to be too bad, at least they would be together, as would Russ and I. Dad, Russ and I stripped off our wet coats, and hung them in the garage to dry, along with the boots, and led everyone into the house. It was very warm, and dry, which after the ordeal we had all been through, was all any of us wanted. "When is the last time any of you ate?" dad asked. You've got to be hungry." "We had lunch at school, Mr. Hampton, but nothing since then," Trent said softly. "Well, let's get some food into you boys, then," dad replied heartily. "Everyone like burgers?" dad said, reaching into the refrigerator, pulling out a large package of ground chuck. "That would be great, Mr. Hampton," Blake said. "OK, burgers it is, and before I start cooking, one thing boys. My name is Chuck, not Mr. Hampton. Mr. Hampton is my father," dad said jokingly, trying to set the boys more at ease, as he opened the package of meat, and started patting out burgers. "What can I do to help?" Mr. Jenkins said. "Not a thing, I've got it all going... just have to wait for the grill to get warm now," dad replied. I offered everyone drinks, told them that we probably had whatever they wanted. "Coke if you don't mind, Randy," Trent said. "Me too," Blake replied. "Two cokes, and I know you want Coke, Russ, what about you Mr. Jenkins?" I asked. "Nothing for me right now, thank you, Randy." she replied. "OK, everybody just relax, and get warm, dinner will be ready in just a few minutes," I said, heading into the kitchen to get everyone's drinks. "Hey dad, where are we gonna put everyone... I know we have plenty of room, but where do you want to put them. I think Russ will be fine in my room, with me, and Trent and Blake may want to stay together, or they may want separate rooms. If they want to stay together, we can put them downstairs with me and Russ, but if they want separate rooms, we will have to put them upstairs, with you, and we can put Mr. Jenkins in the room next to yours." "Sound good to me, see if the boys want to stay together, or want separate rooms, and show everybody to their rooms, and get Russ' and Billy's luggage inside. And since Trent and Blake, don't have any extra clothes, see if you can find something that will fit them, either in my closet or in the spare room, Blake may be able to wear some of your stuff, if you don't mind." "You know I don't mind. I'll get everyone settled in while you get dinner ready. It's almost 1 AM now. I'm sure some of these folks are getting tired," I said, heading out to the living room with everyone's drinks. "OK, first order of business is to get Trent and Blake some dry, warm clothes. Let's head down to my room guys, and find you something to wear," I said, motioning for them to follow me. "Russ, why don't you bring in yours and your father's stuff, and you then come on down stairs, and we'll all slip into something drier and warmer." When we got downstairs to my room, started looking for things that would fit Trent and Blake. "OK, what size shirt and pants do you guys wear?" I asked, guessing they to be able to wear my shirts, but figuring that both would need pants bigger than I had, unless I just gave them some sweats for tonight. "I wear 33 waist, and 32 length, and anything in a shirt, as long as it is dry," Trent said, starting to remove his wet shirt and socks. "I wear a 29 waist, and 31 length, and pretty much the same in shirts as Trent," Blake said, also removing his wet socks, and stripping out of his shirt. "These guys are great looking, and I hope they want to stay together, if so, I'll put them in the room down here that shares a bath with mine," I thought as I watched them taking off their clothes. "Tell you what, for right now, let's get you in some sweats, I've got some that will fit both of you, and we can find clothes that actually fit you after we get some food in you, OK?" "Sounds good to me," Blake said, still cold even though we had been inside for at least 15 minutes. "OK," I replied, walking toward my closet to get a couple of sets of sweats for them. "Here you go," I said, handing each of them a pair of my sweats. "If you are shy about changing, you can go in the bathroom to change, but it's a little warmer in here," I commented as Russ walked in and closed the door behind him. He dropped his bag on the bed, and started to unzip it, then remembered his teddy bear, and decided to wait until Trent and Blake had left before he started going through his stuff, to find some warm clothes. "Here, Russ, you can put your things over here for right now," I said, leading him to a place that he could dig in his bag without the other boys being able to see the teddy bear on top. "Thanks, Randy," he whispered, loud enough for me to hear, but soft enough the Trent and Blake wouldn't hear. "No problem, I thought you might not want them to see everything in there," I said, smiling at him. As I walked back toward Trent and Blake, I noticed them looking at each other, as they started removing their soaked pants. They hesitated to remove their underwear, so I said, "If you will give me your underwear, I will get all of your clothes in the washer, and you will have fresh clean clothes to wear tomorrow." "OK," Trent said, stripping his underwear off to reveal what looked like an 8" uncut dick. Blake turned away from me, and toward Trent, and dropped his underwear, and quickly pulled the sweat pants up before turning to hand me his underwear. When we all had dry clothes on, we went back upstairs to the living room, and they all sat down. I continued into the kitchen to help dad with the last of the dinner preparations. "OK, everybody, burgers are ready, and everything is on the counter," dad yelled into the living room as I opened the buns, and set them on the counter. Everybody lined up, and helped themselves to burgers and chips, and re-filled their drinks. Dad turned the radio on, to check the latest weather report, and when they predicted continued sleet and sub-zero temperatures for the remainder of the week, everyone let out a low moan. After we had all eaten, and were thoroughly full, dad showed Billy to his room, and I asked Trent and Blake, how they wanted to sleep. "OK, guys, we have plenty of rooms, and you are welcome to either take the room downstairs, next to mine, or, if you would rather have separate rooms, we can put one of you upstairs, and one of you downstairs, or both of you upstairs. The rooms and beds are all ready, just however you would rather arrange it." "If it's OK with you, we had just as soon stay together," Trent replied. "We share a room at home, and I don't see why we should split up here." "Fine with me, do you want to sleep upstairs, with dad and Mr. Jenkins, or downstairs in the room next to mine?" I inquired. "Downstairs next to you is fine with us," Blake said, before Trent could even open his mouth. When Trent heard Blake's comment, he just smiled at his little brother. I got Trent and Blake settled in, in the room next to mine, and explained to them that the bath connected to my room, but that they were welcome to take a shower, and make themselves at home. As Russ and I left them, and headed back toward my room, I heard Trent say he was gonna take a nice hot shower. When we got back to my room, I asked Russ whether he wanted to sleep with me, or if he wanted a room of his own, upstairs, next to his fathers. "You know I had rather stay down here with you, if that's OK with you." "I was hoping that you would say that, because we still have 5 movies left to watch, even if we do have to turn the sound down a little, so Trent and Blake won't hear them," I said, giggling at him. "I have to get everybody's clothes in the washer, so Trent and Blake will have something dry to wear tomorrow, and I may as well put yours in there too, even though you have clothes now." "OK, anything I can do to help?" Russ asked. "Nope, but when I get back, if you are ready, we will go to bed," But not necessarily to sleep," I added to myself. As I was putting the clothes in the washer, I heard dad rumbling around upstairs in the computer room. I walked up to see what he was doing. "What are you doing still up?" I asked. "Just doing some figuring, we have enough fuel to run the generator 24 hours a day, for 3 weeks, and enough wood to keep us warm for at least a month, so we are OK. I hadn't checked in a while, and thought I might should make sure of everything before we got settled in too good. The gas lines are still working, so we have gas for extra heat if we need it, and for cooking, even though we could cook by fire if we needed to." "OK, I just heard you up here rumbling around, and wanted to make sure everything was OK. Trent and Blake decided to room downstairs next to me, and Russ was happy to sleep with me, so we are all set for rooms. Any idea how long this will last?" I asked. "Well, I just talked to Nancy again, and she said that they are expecting it to be bad for several days, and at least a week before they even get power back in town, possibly two weeks before they get this far out. I also talked to Tom at the street department. I will be helping them to clear the roads, once it quits sleeting, but it is supposed to be bad for the next two to three days at the least. I just called up the radar on the computer, and it looks bad." "Oh well, at least we are safe and warm here, and we've helped as many as we could. We have plenty of food, don't we?" I asked, hoping that we did, but not sure. "Oh yeah, we have a whole cow, and a whole deer in the freezer, and about 25 pounds of meat in the refrigerator, and enough fresh and canned vegetables and stuff to last the six of us for at least 4 months. So we are fine on food, I was just wanting to make sure that we were OK on gas for the generator, but it looks like we are set for everything. You get to bed, I'm going to. Did you explain about privacy and movies and so forth to Trent and Blake?" "Not yet, I thought I would let them get settled in, and go over all of that tomorrow morning. I did tell them that the bathroom they would be using also opened to my bedroom, and that if they felt more comfortable, they could lock the door on their side, but that if they needed anything, just to come on into my room, and let me know." "Good deal, and I explained to Billy about everything. He is upstairs taking a long hot shower right now, and I expect he will be in bed before long." "I think Trent is taking a shower right now too, and Blake will probably follow him. I will wait and take one in the morning, and will suggest that Russ do the same, that way there won't be any shortage of hot water. See ya in the morning," I said, heading back towards my room. ====================== This is a story that I started a little over 4 years ago, I've got several chapters already written, and will be happy to post them, if it appears that some of you are enjoying the series.
