Chapter 1 In the high class Eighth Arrondissement of Paris, Elysee, in two wondrous villas that seemed to reach the sky, there lived two friends. Two boys in their early teens, the first Johnathan, a cheeky pretty strawberry blonde thirteen year old who was always on the look-out for adventure, and the second being fourteen year old Andrew, a more serious-looking brunette boy with a healthy amoutn of freckles, who at times was cheeky but not like that of his friend, but who found himself always having to look out for his friend, always undoing the trouble Johnathan caused between the two households, and to the local townspeople. They've had many adventures together over the years, proving the innocence of many supposed criminals and proving the guilt of those who really did commit the crime always seemed to be their most popular cases. Because of this the townspeople who lived near them never did hold a grudge for long, knowing that they could be their salvation at any moment. And even when they got annoyed at Johnathan for his pranks, Andrew was always the one to calm those subjected to the pranks and make them forgive Johnathan, and to know it was only in good fun. Little did they know that their biggest adventure was only in the making. The days that follow will change their lives forever, in more ways than one. It would test their skills and limits and more importantly their friendship, on many different levels. On the outskirts of where they lived, on the countryside there was a magnificent villa. One that stood on a hill opposite a river, overlooking the entire countryside. The estate on which the villa stood was vast, but not well-kept. The owner Marquise De Tromperie hadn't been heard from in years, everyone knew she hadn't died because if she had, everyone would have attended her funeral. She was known for her kindness to those around her and always helping those less fortunate, but for the past five years no one had heard from her. Right to the point that most but not all had forgotten who she was, and even more importantly forgot that she owned the villa overlooking the countryside. But those who did remember her, remembered her because of the rumours that were made and spread. One of the more prominent rumours that were spread was that the Marquise had gone insane. That due to her old age of thirty, she thought her life was soon to be nothing left, that the reaper was at her door. The knocking that she heard at night while she laid in bed was what was said to have driven her insane. Then there was the matter of her vanity; while she was kind and didn't mind looking at those around her who didn't have the `gift' of beauty as she often called it, she couldn't deal with herself getting old and becoming ugly, she did everything in her power to stay young and fair, some even say she made a pact with the devil himself so she would become immortal and keep her stunning, youthful looks. Of course these were only rumours that the townspeople made up... or were they? Of course no-one knew the truth except for the Marquise herself. And then there were those who believed she had made the deal and turned herself into the queen of darkness, but those people were just crazy, old fools that no sane person would take note of. The nobility were too concerned with their owns lives to take any real interest in the Marquise, that is except for Johnathan and Andrew who had heard the tale of the `Corrupt Marquise' from Andrew's grandfather. He was the oldest man in the Arrondissement they lived in, and wasn't taken too seriously by anyone except for the two boys. Andrew's father and mother always told them never to listen to him, that he was just living the stories he fantasised about in his heard. They often got angry with him because of the influence he would have on the boys, telling tales of winged horses that came from heaven, a three headed dog that guarded the gates of hell, and among other things the story of how he'd met the legendary dragon master Sly. The boys always listened intently when they were with him, performing together the stories he told them later on, when it was just them alone. Though on the day that they asked him about the villa in the countryside, the story he told them only made them want to explore. He told them all about the Marquise De Tromperie, about her kindness, her beauty, all the things that drew the public to her he told them. But then he told them about her secrets that only those who she was close to knew, secrets that attracted them to searching the villa's grounds. "She was a lady who to the public appeared harmless, well mannered, and kind. But within the walls of the villa there the beast stirred, she was cruel and harsh, ordering her servants around as if they were dogs. Playing games with several men, seducing them, persuading them to believe they loved her. Capturing their hearts and abusing them, throwing them away to the earth when she was done with them, when they had fulfilled her needs. Within the households we knew her real personality and became infatuated with how she held her mask up to the world. She was never pleased with the many leisure activities that the nobility indulged in, no she was bored easily; only one game kept her attention and that was when she was playing with people's minds. She enjoyed being outwardly neutral to those around her, while possessing the quality of being the one who ignites the fire and only needs to watch and wait till it extinguishes. She was an evil woman, but when with her, her qualities let you forget who you're with, in particular among her skills was the `way with words' she had." explained the grandfather. Little did the two boys know just how true the words he spoke were, and that he had a firsthand experience from which to draw them from. Story by GTR01R
