Chapter 2 "That damned man, he is going to be the death of me, giving those two boys ideas. How could he do this to me after all I did for him, after the life I made for him?" wondered the Marquise. And there she sat on an ivory chair, staring out through the window looking out onto the countryside. Thinking over her past mistakes, her past life, how she had had it all. Everything she'd wanted had been at her fingertips: wealth, power, a new man to bed every night. Then somehow, it all just disappeared. She had lost everything, the servants, the wealth, the beauty, the lovers; no one could understand how or why it had happened. All everyone knew was that it happened; that is everyone except the Marquise and Ingenieux her faithful friend. They knew the truth, a truth that the Marquise despised, a truth she'd tried to forget about, all until she heard of the bumbling old man telling his grandson and friend his stories. "Madame, are you in?" called Ingenieux. Still she didn't answer, contemplating the thoughts that filled her mind. His words fell on deaf ears. "Oh, there you are Madame, I was wondering what had happened to you." Still no answer, complete silence apart from the noise the gentle gust brought in through the window. He clicked his fingers to get her attention; she finally came out of her daydream. "You're thinking about it again, aren't you?" "I'm getting worried my love, he gets impatient quickly and I don't know how long I can hold him. His strength knows no bounds." replied the Marquise. "I know, but what can we do? Perhaps we should go and seek out the old man for advice." suggested Ingenieux. "Perhaps you are right. We'd better start heading out then, prepare the horses." As soon as the Marquise stepped out onto the pavement outside her Palace, the clouds darkened and the sky became grey. The wind picked up speed as her horses rode out. There was no doubt that the weather changed due to her presence, although she didn't mind as she enjoyed this weather which was more suited to her usual demeanour. They soon arrived at their destination, another Villa which wasn't as grand as her own Palace, but wasn't shabby either. "Could I please speak with Monsieur De Vieux?" "Who's asking?" replied the door guard. "Tell him an old friend has come to pay him a visit." The guard went in to go relay the message and when he got back, he took the Marquise and Ingenieux to Vieux. When they entered, Vieux was facing the fireplace in the room, but he knew exactly who had come. "So what brings you here, Tromperie? I thought you vowed never to see me again. Or is that creature of yours becoming too strong for you? I warned you, didn't I. I precisely remember telling you that creating him was the worst thing you ever did. It's only a matter of time before he breaks through your restraints." "I'm fully aware of my mistakes Vieux, there is no need to remind me. Now you know the true intent of my visit, so tell me what I came for." "There is no way to control him, you have to let him break free and run his course. You tried to play God, and look what it has done to you. No deed goes without consequence; you wanted to create an Angel, now you've made a demon. It serves you right, Tromperie, you're a vile lady who deserves nothing more then what you receive. But for the right of the creature, I will help you." "If that is how you feel Vieux, I can easily fix it. I just thought you might have had a more humane solution. But as I have no other choice, I might as well dispose of him. Just remember Vieux, I may be vile, I may be cruel, but I have no soul. I lost that a long time ago." "Do as you wish Tromperie, just remember that just because you don't have a soul doesn't mean that you don't fall prey to human nature. You are still human, and still subject to the laws of men." "We'll have to see then if your judgement is correct." With that, the Marquise and Ingenieux rode off into the night, ready to commit any vile act that was necessary to achieve their ends.
