This must be the place," Robbie said from the back seat. Matt pulled his and Mike's aging Ford into the driveway. The car was old, but it still got them around. Most of the time, anyway. Robbie knocked on the door, and Isaiah opened it, letting all three inside. Matt and Mike hadn't expected Isaiah to be black, but race didn't make any difference to them, so they didn't show any surprise. "Hi, Isaiah," Robbie said, shaking his hand. "This is Matt and this is Mike. They are friends I met on the internet." "Hi, Robbie. Nice to meet you, guys. Do we have room for me to take my keyboard and amplifier with us? They aren't very small, but I would like to if you have room." "One thing about our old car, the trunk is huge, so I think we can manage. If something won't fit in the trunk, we can always put it in the back seat and put Robbie in the trunk," Mike kidded. "I already owe a killing to Matt. You want to get on my list, too?" Robbie asked, grinning. "No, sorry, don't think I want to be killed today, thanks anyway. Maybe later," Mike giggled. It didn't take the four boys long to bring up Isaiah's keyboard and amp, and load them into the trunk. They were both professional quality. Isaiah had obviously spent a lot of money on them. At least Robbie could ride in the back seat with Isaiah. He would be much more comfortable than in the trunk. On the way back, it was payback time. "Matt and Mike, Isaiah is black. I didn't notice if you caught that or not," Robbie said. "Well, actually, I am part black, part Indian, part French, and part Creole from down around New Orleans. Is that a problem?" Isaiah asked, getting a little worried. "It isn't for me, and I don't think it is for either of them, but you have to understand that neither of them are very smart, and I just wanted to point it out to them before they started asking you what kind of tanning lotion you use. See, we always have to lay out in the sun to get tan. You are pretty tan all of the time," Robbie kidded. "Yeah, we ain't as smart as you city guys. We uns from the country take a while to catch on sometimes. Matt is barely smart enough to drive the car, and I always have to put the gas in it. He keeps forgetting where the hole for the gas tank is," Mike joked. "Well, as far as I am concerned, your skin color is fine with me. I wouldn't care what color you were. Well, that isn't quite true. If you were a kind of bright lime green, I don't think I would like that very much. I might have to wear sun glasses just to look at you. And, I ain't got enough money to buy me a pair," Matt said, laughing. "You guys had me going for a minute," Isaiah said, laughing along with them. "You guys are crazy, you know that?" Robbie's little joke kind of broke the ice for all of them, and an immediate friendship was formed. Their friendship would have some rough moments, but would last a long time. They were back at Stan's in no time. Robbie introduced Isaiah to him, and then they set up Isaiah's equipment in the basement. "Play something from the Boston album, Robbie, we like it a lot," Matt said. "Oh, you like Boston too? I love the first album they did. I can play some of the songs, also," Isaiah said. "No kidding?" Robbie answered. Maybe this was going to work out after all. At least they liked the same kind of music. He turned on the stereo and put on the Boston CD. Robbie took a deep breathe and launched into the opening of `More Than A Feeling` which was his favorite song. Isaiah joined in on the keyboard parts, and they actually sounded very good together for the first time they had jammed with each other. Matt and Mike clapped when they broke off after a few minutes, and Matt said "You guys are both great. You could really have a great band if you could find a couple of more people." "I know one guy that plays bass, but I don't know if he would be interested in joining us or not. I could always ask him and see," Isaiah said. "Robbie, do you know `Foreplay/Long Time`? That song is why I fell in love with this album in the first place. I just had to learn the organ solo in the `Foreplay` part of the song." "Yeah, I know it pretty good." "There he goes, being Mr. Modest again. Just play, Isaiah. Robbie can keep up with you," Mike said. Isaiah started into the introduction, and he was great. Great really didn't tell the full story, awesome was more like it. When the opening was over, Robbie exploded into the guitar part on `Long Time`. They sounded nearly as good as the recording. "Man, you guys play great together. This could be an awesome band in no time," Matt said. "If we are going to play some of the Boston songs, we will need another lead guitarist, also. They aren't easy to find as a bass player or drummer," Isaiah said. "Well, don't get discouraged. You might find someone really easily. All you have to do is ask around," Mike said. They had no idea how easy it was going to be to find another lead guitarist. I think all four of them would have been astounded to know one was about to move in next door. *************************** "We need to go faster. We have to get Uncle Keith and get back to the police station as quickly as we can. We can't let them arrest Phill after all he has done," Mark yelled to the driver. The traffic in London was as bad as always, and there really wasn't much the driver could do, but he hurried as much as possible. Alex had called his uncle from the car, and he was at the car door as soon as the limo slowed to a halt. He was inside and the limo moving within seconds. "Don't worry, guys, I will handle this. They won't do anything to Phill, I can guarantee you. If anything, he is a hero. If they are going to try to arrest him for assault after you both saw the mugger attack Phill, when all Phill was trying to do was find out who did this to Keith, I will hire the best attorney in London and we will sue the police for enough money to let Phill buy his own house when he reaches the U.S.," Keith Senior vowed. When they got to the police station, Phill had just finished giving his statement, and the police were trying to decide if they believed his version of the beating he had given to the third mugger. It had sure looked like assault to the policeman who had pulled Phill off of the guy. Keith Senior came over to make sure Phill was all right, and then stormed back to the Commander's office. He didn't bother with the surprised secretary outside his office, he walked right in on a meeting with the Commander and two of his higher ranking officers. "I am sorry to barge in here like this. I apologize, but are you gentlemen aware that my two nephews and one of the boys who stopped the beating of my son found two of the muggers in a bar, notified the police, and they are both now here, behind bars? The third mugger came out after the officers had left the scene and attacked Phill in front of several witnesses, including my nephews. Phill defended himself, and subdued the third mugger so that he could also be apprehended. Your officers are now thinking about charging Phill with assault of one of the men who mugged my son. If that happens, I promise to personally deliver a law suit by noon tomorrow for false arrest, defamation of character, and anything else the best lawyer I can find in this city can come up with. I am not making idle threats, I am making a sacred promise to Phill and also my son Keith. Money will be no object. I swore that justice would be done, and now Phill is part of that vow," he said softly. "What?" the Commander said. "If what you say is true, all of this can be handled immediately. Let me talk to my men," he said, as he walked out into the main part of the police station. He talked to his men off to the side for a few minutes, and then came over to where Phill was sitting with Keith Senior at his side. "Phill, you are free to go. No charges will be filed. I want to personally thank you and your cousins for assisting in finding all three muggers. If anything, I think it is poetic justice that the mugger got a taste of his own medicine. I think my sons would have done the same thing you did. I hope we didn't inconvenience you too much," he said, shaking Phill's trembling hand. "Thank you, Commander. You did the right thing," Keith Senior said, shaking the Commander's hand. "Come on boys, I think we have had enough of being in a police station for a while. I also think the Commander will be glad to see us go," he said as he smiled at the Commander on his way out the door. He was right. The Commander breathed a big sigh of relief. He hoped he never saw any of them again. This had almost led to more trouble than one gay bashing was worth. As far as he was concerned, gays got what they deserved, and he had more important things than that to worry about. "Where to, sir?" the driver said as they all got into the limo. "Take us to the hospital. I want Keith to know that the muggers have been apprehended. If anything will help him get better, this bit of news will." "Yes, sir," he answered, shutting the door. "It is after visiting hours. They won't let us see Keith," Mark said. "Oh, I think I can convince them to make an exception this time." All they could do for Phill's cuts and scrapes was wipe his face as good as they could with Mr. Ericson's handkerchief and some bottled water from the limo. Further treatment would have to wait until they got back to Gram's house. When they arrived at the hospital, the head nurse did attempt to keep them out of Keith's room, but Mr. Ericson politely explained what had happened and convinced a doctor who walked nearby to allow them five minutes with Keith. The head nurse gave in, but not without a blistering look at all four of them. The three boys giggled as they walked into Keith's room, and Mr. Ericson had to stifle his own laughter. She looked like she could be a mean customer when riled. Maybe they could sneak out without her seeing them when it was time to leave. Keith was still awake when they walked in. "Dad, what are you doing here? PHILL!!! What happened to you? Who did this to you?" Keith yelled as he saw Phill's face for the first time. They made Keith calm down, and Alex and Mark told him the whole story, even the part about the police threatening to arrest him for assault, and his father's actions. Keith had tears in his eyes as he looked at Phill. "First you save my life, then you risk your life to apprehend the people who did this to me. You take a beating yourself to apprehend the last of the three. I love you more now than anything else in my life. I will make this up to you, or die trying," he said, kissing Phill's hand that he held lovingly. "Uh-uhm. I think your five minutes are now up," the head nurse said from the doorway, after she cleared her throat. "Yes mam, we are going now. Thank you for allowing us to see my son for this long," Mr. Ericson said diplomatically. No one wanted a beating of their own from this tiger woman. She spun on her heals and walked briskly back to the nurse's station, where she continued to stare at the door. "We will be back first thing in the morning to take you home, Keith," his Dad promised. "Please make it early as possible. I want out of here so bad I can taste it. I think she might beat me all over again every time she comes in here," Keith said. "Well, if she starts beating you, we are all out of here," Alex kidded. "You are on your own with her. We would defend you against any sane person, but we know we are no match for her." "Thanks, guys," Keith laughed. "Just make sure and get here early. I will try and hold her off until then. Can I have a kiss before you go, Phill?" Phill blushed once again, and looked quickly at Keith's father. He had a smile on his face, and nodded yes. Phill bent down to give Keith a little short kiss on the lips, but Keith put his arms around Phill's head, pulling him farther down, and kissed him passionately. "I must insist that you go now! And, we do not allow that kind of thing in this hospital! You either leave now, or I will call security," the head nurse barked from the doorway. "Oh, shit!" Phill said, as he hastily pulled away from Keith and almost ran past the head nurse. The rest couldn't help themselves. All four burst out in laughter at Phill's rapid exit, even Keith. "Yes mam, we are going this instant. Goodbye, son. Hope we see you in the morning," his Dad said, as he led Alex and Mark out of the room. All three could feel the knives in their backs that had come from the head nurse's eyes as they departed. They found Phill outside in the waiting room in a corner, obviously hiding from tiger woman. They all went over and patted him on the back and finally got him to laugh a little with them. "Before we leave, I want to go down to Intensive Care and see the mugger that Phill put here," Keith Senior said. They all walked down to Intensive Care, and peered into the room for a few moments until a nurse came over to ask why they were here. "We were just leaving. We were looking for a friend of ours, but he must have been moved to a different room. Thank you for your time," Keith Senior said, leading the boys out into the hallway. He was satisfied. The mugger looked like he had been run over by a truck. When they were back in the limo and on their way home, Mark said "Well, I am glad all of this is finally going to be over. Keith will be home tomorrow, and he should be fine in no time." "It is not quite over yet. I still have some calls to make," Keith Senior said quietly. Hatred for the muggers still burned in his eyes, and he wasn't finished with them yet. The youngest of the first two muggers that were arrested while playing snooker cracked under pressure, and admitted that all three of them had beaten and robbed Keith. Several days later, after conferring with his lawyer, he accepted a lessor sentence for testifying against the other two muggers. They were also tied to several other beatings, including one that resulted in the boy's death, and all were convicted. The other two would spend the rest of their life behind bars. Keith's Dad was not content to just see the three muggers go to prison. He used plenty of connections and a considerable amount of money to make sure that all three of them got roommates who were lots bigger than they were, had not been with a woman for many years, and had developed a reputation for enjoying violent sex while in prison. Having lots of money can really be useful at times like these, can't it? Comments can be sent to fsw99@mindspring.com
