I was an author, and I made up stories for a living, but I had no idea how to handle a situation like this. I had to do something, though, so I did. I ran over to Robbie, who was standing by the fireplace in the den, and forcibly made him turn around where I could grab him and hug him to me. He fought me like a tiger, but I held on for dear life. I did not let him get away. "Robbie, quit fighting me and listen. Quit it!", I yelled, and shook him once hard, and held him away from me. He just stopped fighting and looked at me with frightened eyes, like a deer caught in car lights. "We are both the same. I am lonely, just like you. Maybe, we are made for each other. I need someone to talk to, someone to be my friend. I think you are the same way. I think we need each other. Maybe, we can help each other. We just have to trust each other. Is that so bad? Are you afraid of letting yourself go and letting yourself love someone else? I'm not. I think I love you already. I want you to love me, too. Is that too much to ask? For us to love each other, and help each other fight all of our problems together?", I asked. Robbie's eyes got really big, as what I had said finally registered in his brain. All the hostility immediately melted. He looked up at me one more time, and flung himself into my arms and hugged me until my ribs felt like they were breaking. It was a really great feeling, even if it was slightly painful. I just held him for along time. Neither of is spoke. Neither of us had to. We were bonding, and it can take place anywhere. I finally eased him over to the sofa, and slowly sat both of us down. "Robbie, look, you can come over here as much as you want to. I will even give you your own key. You could walk, or ride your bike. I really like you. I want us to be friends. Don't you want that, too?, I asked. Robbie finally looked up at me and asked, "I thought you said you loved me?" I was momentarily shocked. "OK, I do. I am just not used to saying it. I am sorry. I love you. Is that so important that I say it to you?", I asked, looking him in the eyes. He didn't hesitate. He said, "YES! I love you too! I really need someone to love me. I mean, I know Mom does, but she is so busy all the time, and I hardly see her at all on the days she is working. Do you really mean it that I can come over here and stay with you some after school?" "Sure I do. I know. When is your Mom's next day off?", I asked. "Tomorrow, why?", Robbie answered. "Why don't you call me when you get home from school? I want to come over and talk to her, if she lets me. We have to get her permission for you to come over. Once she meets me, maybe it will be all right, and then you are welcome to come over any time you want. OK?", I asked. "Yeah, that would be great.", he answered, beaming at me. "Thanks." "Well, it is getting late. I had better get you home so you can be in bed by 10. Make sure and take your book with you, OK?", I asked. "You don't have to worry about that, Coach. Nobody is going to take this book away from me.", Robbie answered, laughing. We locked up, and I quickly drove him home. I pulled into his driveway, and asked, "Do you want me to pick you up for practice on Wednesday, or do you want your Mom to drop you off?" "If you don't mind, I would rather you picked me up. I can be ready any time you say.", he answered quietly. "That is fine. I will be glad to do it. Remember to call me tomorrow so I can talk to your Mom, OK?", I said. "I won't forget. I promise.", he answered, grinning. There was that smile again. I was really beginning to like that smile. "Uh, Coach. Can I ask you something?", he mumbled. "Sure, Robbie, what is it?", I asked. "You promise you won't laugh?", he asked softly. "Robbie, I would never laugh at you. I might laugh with you, but not at you. Now, what is it?", I answered. "Would you mind coming in with me for a few minutes? I know it is stupid, but I hate going into the house by myself when it is dark and no one else is home. I do it all the time, but I still don't like it. Please?", he whined. "Robbie, that is no big deal at all. Sure, I will.", I answered. Honestly, I was glad he asked. I really didn't like the idea of just letting him out of my car to go into a totally dark house and me just driving away, either. We walked up to the door, he unlocked it, and I followed him inside. He turned on a few lights, and then said, "Thanks, Coach. I guess I am just a baby, huh?" "No way, buddy. As old as I am, I really don't like going into a dark house at night, either. This is nothing for you to be ashamed of. Look, it is almost ten. You need to be in bed. I promised your Mom. I'll see you tomorrow, OK?" I asked. "Coach, could you just stay for a few more minutes? I'll go get ready for bed, if you want. I just don't want you to leave yet, OK?", he asked. As I looked at him, he had a pleading look on his face. It must be really hard for him to be alone so much of the time. What could I do, tell him I had to go back home and get back to work? That I had better things to do? That would really go over really well, wouldn't you think? So, I did the only thing I could do at the time. I said, "Sure, Robbie. I'll stay for a few more minutes, if you want me to. But, you have to be in bed by ten, or I will break my promise to your Mom, and then she might not let you come over anymore. So, make sure the door will lock when I leave, and turn out the lights that you don't want on when she comes home, and I will stay with you until you start to get sleepy, all right?" The smile on his face lit up the rest of the room not illuminated by the lights he had left on. "Thanks, Coach. And thanks for understanding.", he said, running over and hugging me once again. He released me quickly, and turned out any unnecessary lights as he led me to his bedroom. He sat down on his bed, and started to take off his shoes and socks. "All you have to do is pull the door shut as you leave. Are you sure you don't mind staying with me for a few minutes?" he asked. "No, Robbie, this is fine with me. We can just talk for a few minutes, and I am sure you will go to sleep and I can go home. I really don't have anything to do when I get there, anyway," I answered. Robbie just smiled at me, as he stood up and pulled the basketball jersey over his head. He laid it over his chair and got out a plain white t-shirt to wear to bed. When he had pulled that on, he calmly pulled down his basketball shorts, giving me a few quick glances at the bottom of his white briefs from under the bottom of his t-shirt before he hoped into bed and pulled up the covers. I sat down next to him and started to massage his back and shoulders. "A few minutes of this, and you should be asleep in no time, Robbie.", I said softly, as I continued to massage his back. "Oh, that feels really good, Coach.", he groaned. As I massaged his back, the sheet and spread gradually were pulled down, as I went lower and lower down his back. Robbie was really enjoying the massage and I knew that I was also enjoying the contact with him. Robbie sat up unexpectedly and said, "That feels awesome. I think I will pull off my t-shirt so you can rub my back easier.", he said, pulling it over his head and laying back down again. The sheet and spread had fallen down when he sat up and he didn't bother to pull it back up. It was now only covering the bottom part of his butt, and almost all of his briefs were exposed. I couldn't help myself as I stared at them as I rubbed his back. I was also beginning to get turned on by touching so much of Robbie's body, and I had a real difficult time understanding what I was feeling, but I kept up the massage anyway. Robbie had settled down, and I could tell he was almost asleep. I made him sit up long enough to pull his t-shirt over his head and then gently laid him down. He settled back down, and was asleep in no time. He did manage to mumble, "I love you" as I laid him down before he fell asleep. I covered him up, and left the house, with my mind still spinning. I had a lot of thinking to do tonight. I didn't get much sleep that night. I knew I really already loved Robbie, but I was totally confused about what I was feeling towards him. This started out as a totally "Big Brother" type relationship, but I was now feeling lots more than that, and it worried me. I mean, here I was, a totally straight male, at least I thought I was, finding myself attracted to a 12 year old boy. What could I be thinking? I really couldn't be thinking at all, at least not with the big head on top of my shoulders. I made myself promise not to get to close to Robbie, physically. But, Robbie made that really difficult. He called me as soon as he got home from school the next day. I finished what I was working on, and drove over to his house. He was out the door as soon as I pulled into his driveway. As soon as I got out of my car, he was hugging me tight, and jabbering away at a high rate of speed. I looked up, and saw his Mom on the porch looking at me very strangely. I blushed a little, hoping she couldn't see that from so far away, broke away from Robbie's hug, and walked up the sidewalk to their house. When I got to the door, I said, "Hi, Mrs. Stephens. My name is Stan Miller. I hope it is all right for me to come here right now." She shook my hand, but I could tell that she wasn't sure about me at all. We all went into the living room, and she said, "Robbie, I want to talk to Stan alone for a few minutes. Go up to your room, and I will call you when you can come down, OK?" "Ah, Mom, can't I stay? Coach is my friend, not yours," he yelled. "Robbie, upstairs now!", she ordered. Robbie looked like he was going to argue with his mother over this, so I said, "Robbie, just go, OK? This isn't a big deal, and your mother and I really do need to talk about this without you here." His arrogant attitude immediately gone, and he just smiled at me and said, "OK, just don't be very long," and ran upstairs to his room. His Mom just stared like she didn't believe what she had seen. "I don't believe it. He obeyed you lots better than he does me. I tell him to do something, and he just ignores me. We fight like cats and dogs. He seems like an entirely different boy around you.", she said. "Look, I don't want to get in the middle of anything. I like Robbie. He seems to like me. We are both on our own too much of the time. We are both kind of lonely, and we kind of became friends because of that. I don't know how to make you understand, but we just kind of clicked. I only want the best for your son. My ex-wife and I couldn't have kids, and I guess I have kind of adopted Robbie as the son I could never have. I know this has happened really quickly, but all we are asking is your permission for him to come over after school and keep me company. I will make sure he does his homework as soon as gets to my house, and then he can read or play on my computer. I will also make sure he is in bed by 10 every night.", I told her. "Robbie told me all about what you did together yesterday, and he seems to really like you a lot. I guess it wouldn't hurt for him to come over if you are sure that you don't mind. I know he is really lonely here all by himself, and if it helps both of you, I don't see what the harm would be.", she answered. "All Right!", Robbie yelled from the top of the stairs. We both looked at each other and burst out laughing at the same time. "Robbie, I thought your mother told you to go to your room.", I said, through my laughter. "Oh. Yeah, I did go, but I thought you were finished, so I came back to check on you," he lied, as he came to the top of the stairs. "Sure you did," I kidded him. "All right, Robbie, you might as well come back down and sit with us. I have a few more things that we have to work out before I say OK to this.", she said. Robbie reluctantly came back down the steps, leery of what else she was going to say. "When you are over at Stan's house, I want you to obey him just like you would me. You have to do everything he tells you to do, and you have to be quiet when he is working, you understand?", she asked. "Sure, Mom, that won't be a problem. I was real quiet yesterday.", he answered. "And, I want you in bed by 10 every school night, no exceptions.", she continued. "Yes Mam", he answered reluctantly. I could tell he was already thinking he might try to get me to let him stay up a little later than that. "And, Stan, if he gives you any trouble, you have my permission to pull his pants down and give him a good spanking. He has needed one for a long time, and he is a little too big for me to spank any more.", she kidded. "Mom!", Robbie yelled, and blushed furiously. We both cracked up at his expression, and finally, when he realized that she was kidding, he also joined us in the joke. "Great! Thanks, Mom. Can I go over to Coach's house now for a while?", he asked. "I don't see why not, if it all right with Stan.", she answered. "That's fine with me. Do you have any homework, Robbie?", I asked. "Yeah.", he said quietly. "Well, you have to do that before you can read or play on the computer. That is going to be part of our deal, no exceptions.", I answered. "Aw, man.", Robbie sighed. We both looked at each other and laughed quietly. "I think I may really get to like this deal.", she said, as we laughed. "I tell you what, bring him back at seven, and I will cook you a home cooked meal to help pay you back for spending time with Robbie. How does that sound?" "That sounds great to me.", I said, standing up. "You really don't have to pay me back for anything, but I never turn down a free meal." "All right. Let me get my books.", Robbie said, and ran up to his room. We both smiled as we watched him disappear up the steps. "Thanks for letting him come over to your house, Stan. He seems really excited about it and I think being with you instead of being alone so much of the time will really be good for him. Don't let him run all over you, though.", she said. "Don't worry about it. We will both enjoy the company. And, I can take care of keeping Robbie from tearing up my house, I guarantee you.", I replied, laughing quietly. Robbie quickly ran back down the stairs and drug me with him out the door. I looked back at his Mom as he yelled "Bye Mom", and saw her smiling. "Bye, Mom", I also shouted, smiling back. "Bye, boys. Behave yourselves, now.", she laughed, going back inside. We were quickly back at my house and I got us both a coke before we settled in at our two respective desks, me going back to my latest chapter and Robbie starting in on his homework. Robbie interrupted me a couple of times to ask for help on a math problem, but I had told him he could do that, and I didn't mind at all. In fact, the distraction gave me a few minutes breather, and I found it was actually easier to write with Robbie here than without him. Robbie silently finished his homework and started back reading my book. I almost forgot that it was nearly 7 until I looked at my computer clock as I finished my chapter. "Robbie, we need to be going soon.", I said. He hurriedly flipped through a couple of pages. "I only have five more pages to go. I read really fast. Can't I finish it?", he pleaded. What could I say to the person who was quickly becoming my biggest fan? No, put my book down now! "Sure, Robbie, I will get my stuff together so we can leave when you are finished. Turn out the light when you are done, OK?", I said. "Sure, Coach.", he answered. "Oh, and Robbie. You can call me Coach when we are on the basketball court, but I think it is time for you to start calling me Stan around here, OK?", I asked. "Sure, Stan. Thanks.", he answered, beaming at me. There was that smile again. I loved that smile. I just grinned back at him, and walked back into the kitchen. I had made two small cheese cakes not long ago. I always make them small, since even one small one can last me almost a week, but I had frozen one. I got it out, along with a package of frozen strawberries, and put them into the microwave. I was not a great cook, but I thought I did pretty well in the kitchen. I wasn't going to get my own cooking show, like "Emerill Live", but this was my grandmother's recipe, and it was not really very difficult, plus I thought of myself as a pretty damn good cook. This ought to make a pretty good dessert at the last minute. Robbie came out not long after, and was really excited about the trouble Adam was in where he was in the book. I was really enjoying his enthusiasm about my writing. He even told me where he thought the story was going. He was wrong, but his version was at least as good as where I took the plot. I made a mental note to include him when I made the next outline for my next book. Maybe, we would end up a team. Probably not, but who knew? The meal was excellent, and Robbie's Mom made me promise to call her Sue. I left shortly after Robbie had to go to bed, and again he insisted that I tuck him in. Sue followed us upstairs, and watched as I told him good night. She even smiled as he hugged me before I left. So, we quickly got into a regular routine. He would come straight over to my house after school, immediately do his homework, and then either read or go on line on the Internet. He even started leaving some play clothes at my house so he could change after school. We became closer and closer, as the time passed, but I sure had no idea how close we were to become four short weeks after we first became friends. Comments can be sent to fsw99@mindspring.com
