Chapter 10 - Unmute

I've always wondered how my mind could make out the voices of the different people I met or even just heard. Even when I wasn't talking to them, their voice would be sort of distinguished inside my head and among all the noise I kept hearing. One particular voice that I could easily hear was Felix Corbel's.

`Sure,' I once told myself, `I guess I shouldn't be surprised if I always heard Felix's voice. I mean, I always thought of him anyway.'

It was all part of my abnormal admiration of him.

But there was something that scared me. During the day and when I'm not literally dreaming, Felix's voice was as childish and silly as I remembered it from when we were both eight years old. At night and in my dreams, however, his voice sounded...terrified and pleading me to come and save him.

`Save him from what?' I pondered, but couldn't find any answer. Except, of course, from the daily bullshit he got from my so-called friends.

Did Felix want me to stand up for him?

"Earth to Chase...come in, Chase..."

I snapped out of my thoughts and stared annoyingly at Dennis' hand waving in front of my face.

"What?" I asked.

"You've been staring at your lunch for like 15 minutes, dude," he told me. "You okay?"

He sounded genuinely concerned, but I wouldn't let myself be fooled by his boy-next-door charm and worried dark eyes.

"It's not like you got an F in Math, Chase," Gregory commented, chewing lazily on his sandwich. "Unlike the three of us, you're actually smart."

"Smartass," Patrick quipped and nudged my arm.

They all chuckled and chatted about the extra homework they had to do and how they didn't even care at all. I kept poking around my plate, but already stopped staring at it. My eyes, instead, found Felix's back turned toward me.

We may have had some telepathic conversation, but as I was about to look away, he turned his head and smiled slightly at me.

It was time.

"Say, guys," I mumbled, steering my friends' attention toward me. "You always wondered why I didn't want to bother with Fe--...sunshine, right?"

They all exchanged glances and shrugged, allowing me to continue.

"He's sort of pissing me off right now. Should I do something about that?"

Dennis looked toward where I was looking and found Felix's back turned toward us. He was obviously quietly having his lunch.

"He's just sitting right there, man," he pointed out. "He's not even pissing me off right now."

"I dunno. I just...I just don't think he should be sitting with anyone," I uttered and quickly added, "...at all."

My three friends stared at me like I had grown a third eye before glancing toward Felix and chuckling and smirking among themselves.

"You gonna do something about that?" Gregory asked.

"Just watch me," I declared, stood up and made my way toward Felix's table with half of my lunch in one hand.

When I reached his table, the kid who sat in front of him stared up at me and gestured for Felix to look behind him. Felix did, and his eyes found mine which were looking down on him.

"Hey sunshine," I greeted. "Do you really think you should be sitting with anyone? You don't even talk to anyone so why sit with them at all?"

Felix just kept on staring, his mundane face didn't hint of anything, but I knew what he was thinking. Or I believed I did.

"Just leave him alone, Chase," the kid who sat in front of Felix told me. "He isn't doing anything to any of you."

"Mind your own business," I almost snarled. Turning back to Felix, I said, "How `bout you leave this table and find some place where you won't bother anyone."

"He isn't even doing..."

I shut the other kid up by slamming my fist on the table which may have surprised the whole cafeteria, but it wasn't loud enough to draw away everyone's attention for more than a couple of seconds.

"C'mon, Fe--...sunshine," I stuttered and struggled to get back my composure. "Find yourself a table of your own."

Felix didn't even sigh or shrug. He just stood up, took his lunch with him and started to walk past me. Before he could be out of my reach, I turned around, placed my foot on his path and made him stumble. My left hand which was holding what was left of my lunch which was just some juice intentionally pushed on his back, spilling its cold contents on Felix' bland shirt. It made him shiver a little and elicited some laughter among those who saw what took place.

Felix fell forward, spoiling his lunch on the floor with his back shivering from the juice I spilled on him. I did all that to him and it made me feel awful inside, but I had to keep my demeanour.

"Oops," I chanted, almost giggling. "You better watch where you're going next time."

What happened next, though, surprised not only me, but every single one in the cafeteria.

"Hey Chase...," someone said and when I turned around to address him, my face was hit hard by something very similar to what crept down Felix's back earlier.

Orange juice.
