"Quincy And That Unusual Friend Of His" Chapter 2 Quincy trudged down the stairs on his way to breakfast. He had taken a quick shower and had gotten dressed, and was ready to go see his old man's office on Capitol Hill. Immediately behind him, like a nude shadow, was Erik. When Quincy woke up, Erik had been happily spinning around on his desk chair while singing a little song that Quincy didn't recognize. He actually was happy to see Erik when he woke up, which surprised him. He felt like he should be running away while shrieking in horror when he sees Erik, but for some reason it was just the opposite. He actually wanted to have Erik around. Quincy entered the kitchen with Erik in tow and sat down at the table. Erik sat down on a chair between the sliding glass door and the bookcase with all of the cookbooks on it , just behind and to the right of Steve. Quincy's mom was spooning scrambled eggs and link sausage onto three plates. "Oh good, you're dressed already." Steve said just before he took a big sip of coffee. "So aside from your nightmare, did you sleep well last night? " "Yeah. Sorry that I woke both of you up." Quincy said. "Is it just me or did it just get really chilly in here?" Steve said while rubbing his arms. "Probably the AC, Dad." Quincy said while glancing over at Erik, who looked like he was trying not to laugh. "Well we might have to get that looked at. I knew there was a catch to the cheap rent in this place." Quincy's mom brought two of the plates over to Steve and Quincy, went back to get her plate, and sat at the table. The family then all joined hands and bowed their heads for their morning prayer. While Steve was leading the prayer, Quincy glanced over at Erik. Erik appeared to be checking out the furniture and decorations in the kitchen. He glanced over at Quincy and smiled. Quincy smiled back, he was starting to really like Erik. Steve then ended the prayer and the family began eating. "Great scrambled eggs, Carol." Steve said. "Quincy, we need to go shopping for school clothes today." Carol said. "Oh Mom, I wanted to go explore the neighborhood!" "You can still do that! It won't take all day to buy clothes ! We'll go to Bloomingdale's when we get back from the District." "Oh...Alright." Quincy groaned. "You need to finish up your breakfast, Son. We need to be out of here in ten minutes. Chop chop." Steve said. Erik then went behind Steve and started making faces. Quincy almost burst into laughter but suppressed it, but not before a loud chortle escaped him. "Did I say something that amused you, Quincy?" Steve asked testily. "No, I'm sorry. I just thought about something that I saw on TV the other night." "Well look. I know you don't want to be here, and I know you don't want to go downtown today, but I need you to be on your best behavior when we get there. There might be reporters or constituents there today." Steve said. Erik stood behind him and started imitating his speech and mannerisms. Quincy was digging his fingernails into his sides trying not to laugh. "You have to remember, we serve the people now. Not just me, we all do. This whole family now represents the 54th district. not just me." Erik then crossed his eyes while sticking his tongue out and did a rabbit ears behind Steve. Quincy immediately exploded into laughter. "Quincy! How dare you!" Carol cried out. "Son, I have JUST about lost all my patience with you!" Steve bellowed. Erik saw that he might have gotten Quincy into some serious trouble, so he immediately turned to the bookshelf, and pushed a whole row of books onto the floor. Steve and Carol both bolted up out of their seats and onto their feet. Erik winked at Quincy and then vanished. Steve and Carol looked at the fallen books in horror. "What the hell?" Steve said. "I saw that! They just fell on their own!" Carol exclaimed. "Unbelievable. It looks like someone pushed them!" Quincy just sat with his head down and his hands in his lap while his parents inspected the shelf and the fallen books. "I'm going to go upstairs and brush my teeth now." Quincy said as he got up and quickly exited the room. He walked quickly to the stairs and ran up to the second floor. "Erik ...Erik...!" He whispered in the hallway. He glanced in his room and didn't see him in there. He then felt a tap on his shoulder and gasped. He turned around and saw Erik's beaming face. "Hello!" Erik said cheerfully. "Erik, you startled me! "Quincy whispered. "Sorry, I'm just having some fun. You're the first people to live here in months. It's been boring." Erik said. Quincy entered the room and sat on his bed. "Well look, Erik. You can't be messing with my folks. If they find out about you they're going to run screaming out of the house and won't even take the furniture with them. I'll have to go too and then we won't be able to see each other anymore." "They'll be like all the others. They all get scared and run off when they see me too. You're the first one who's ever talked to me." Erik said sadly as he sat next to Quincy. "Exactly. I mean...we're going to have to kind of keep you hidden...you know? I mean...if a bunch of weird stuff happens then they're going to leave and take me with them. I don't want that." "I don't want that either." Erik said, and then leaned his head against Quincy's shoulder. Quincy looked over at Erik leaning on him. He then put his hand around Erik's bare shoulders and they sat that way for several seconds until the peace was shattered. "Quincy! We're going!" Carol shouted from the base of the staircase. "Okay Mom. Be right there!" Quincy then removed his arm from Erik's shoulder. "Alright, well, time to leave, I guess. Are you coming?" "No." Erik replied. "My place is here, in this house." "Oh...I see. Ok, well, I guess I'll see you when I get back." "Bye." Erik waved. As Quincy's dad started the car in the driveway, Quincy looked at the house and saw Erik waving to him from his parents bedroom window that faced the garage roof. Quincy gave a brief wave as the car backed out of the driveway. Soon they were navigating the winding roads through McLean on their way to the city. "Do you think that house is haunted?" Carol said suddenly to Steve as they turned onto Old Dominion Drive. Quincy briefly looked up from his I-Pad in the backseat when she said that. "No, Honey, I don't." Steve said. "Well why not? What else can explain those books falling over on their own and those weird temperature changes in the room that we felt?" "I don't know, Dear, but I'm sure it's not ghosts." Steve said. "Well why not?" "Because ghosts don't exist." "How do you know that they don't exist?" Carol asked. Quincy glanced up from his I-Pad again. "Because I've never seen any convincing proof otherwise. Until I do, a weak bookshelf and a faulty AC unit caused what happened today, as far as I'm concerned." Steve said. Quincy went back to his I-Pad as the car rolled on towards Washington. "What about you, Kiddo?" Steve said with a smile while looking at Quincy through the rearview mirror."Do you believe in ghosts?" "No. That's just stupid stuff that people believe." Quincy said without looking up. "Well I hope you two are right!" Carol said. Nothing much happened in DC. Steve showed his family his office and they walked around the grounds of the Capitol. They soon returned, but Carol grabbed Quincy and took him right to Tysons Corner for school clothes shopping. It was after 3 PM by the time they returned. Quincy felt trepiditious when they returned. His dad had been at the house that whole time that they were at the mall, and he was worried something might have happened involving Erik, but his dad didn't mention anything unusual happening. Quincy took his new clothes up to his room and to his delight, he saw Erik in there, sitting on the desk and patiently waiting for him. "Hey Erik." Quincy said as he closed the door to the bedroom. "Hi Quincy! How was the Capitol?" "It was OK. Mom took me out clothes shopping." Quincy began pulling the shirts and pants out of the bags. "I guess that probably sounds funny to you since you don't wear clothes !" Quincy laughed. "I don't now, but I used to, I think." Erik said. Quincy began sorting out his new clothes on the bed. "So...do you remember much about...you know, before you 'lived' here? You know, back when you used to wear clothes and go to school and so on?" Erik got really quiet, like he was thinking really hard. "Not really. I don't remember much about all that anymore. I've always lived here, anyway. I know I've been here since I was a baby." "Oh yeah?" "Yeah, I was born in Denmark and my parents came over here when I was a baby, I'm pretty sure..." "I thought you had a little bit of an accent. You're from Denmark?" Erik scowled a little. "Yes, but that was a long time ago." "That's cool that you come from a foreign place." Said Quincy as he began putting clothing items into drawers. "I guess so. I don't think it's all that big a deal." "Maybe that's where your parents went, back to Denmark." "I guess so, maybe..." "Have you ever thought about visiting them?" "No, I live here..." "...you live here." Quincy said with him. "Yeah, I know. I just kinda figured that you could fly or beam over there or whatever." "No, I can't. I have to stay here." "How come?" "Because I live here !" Erik said, this time a little angrily. Quincy sighed. He was starting to become a little frustrated with how vague Erik was about everything. He finished putting his new clothes away, and took his old pair of jean cut offs and a t-shirt out of the dresser to change into so that he could go out and explore the neighborhood. He took off his neck tie and started to unbutton his dress shirt. "So, do you know any fun places around here?" Quincy asked right before he removed his shirt and threw it like a basketball into the hamper . "Sure, the the dirt road, the woods behind the houses, the old preserve with the pond..." Erik replied while he watched Quincy undress. "The old preserve?" Quincy asked while he unbuckled his belt. "Yeah, the Mary Butler Lemon Preserve. It's a park that's close by, it's pretty neat, but people are usually there." Quincy took his pants off, sat on the bed, and began peeling off his socks. "That place sounds neat. We'll check that place out first." Quincy then got up and took his white BVD's off, so he was now as naked as Erik was. "Oh wow, yours looks like mine!" Erik said while he stared at Quincy's dick. "Huh?" "Your dick, it looks like mine." Erik said as he spread his legs and leaned back with his hands on his waist. "Yeah I know, we're both uncircumcised. I am because my dad is and my grandfather is." Quincy said while he slipped on the jean shorts. "I was the only one in my school who was, at least as far as I knew, if I'm remembering correctly." "You probably were. I never saw another kid who was where I used to live, not that I saw that many dicks!" Quincy laughed. "So you're going to the preserve now?" Quincy slipped on his t-shirt. "Yeah. You're coming too, right?" "No, I can't. I have to stay here." Erik said while looking away from Quincy. "What? What do you mean you have to stay here? You mean you can't leave the house?" Erik looked sadly at Quincy and then looked away. "I don't know if I can't or not. I just never have." "Ok, so it's not that you can't, it's that you won't. " Quincy said. "I don't think you understand..." Erik said. "I understand that you would rather stay cooped up in this house for a hundred years or whatever than go out for one afternoon and explore the neighborhood with me!" Quincy said. Erik just stared sadly at the floor. "Come on, I don't want to go out exploring without my best friend with me!" Erik looked slowly up at Quincy. "Am I...am I really your best friend?" "Well sure..." Erik smiled. "Wow. No one has ever called me that. Not now, not then, not ever." "So let's go exploring then !" Quincy said as he grabbed Erik's arm and started leading him out the bedroom door. The boys both went down the stairs and out the front door. Quincy got half way down the lawn and turned around. Erik was standing in front of the doorway. Quincy thought he looked funny standing there naked in the sunshine. "Come on!" Quincy laughed while motioning with his arm . Erik walked slowly down the lawn towards Quincy. He seemed hesitant and almost scared. "I really don't want to do this, Quince." He said. "Don't worry, no one's going to see your pecker!" Quincy laughed. "Come on, I need you as a guide!" Erik smiled wanly and started following Quincy. Quincy stepped over the curb and out onto the street. Just then he heard a sudden, horrible noise behind him, like fifty rabbits and fifty hogs all being slaughtered at once. It was a sound of terror, pain, and grief, and it was ear shattering. Quincy cupped his hands over his ears and turned around. The sight he saw, along with the sounds he was hearing, would give him nightmares for years afterwords. Erik stood in the street screaming, his mouth was stretched way wider open than is normal for a human, as though his jaw was detached. His eyeballs were two bloody orbs, bugging out of his face in two horrific spheres. His nostrils were flared wide open and his skin was a corpse like grey. Images began flashing in Quincy's mind of a horrible accident, of a crushed human head, of a funeral, and of a suicide by gunshot. Veins were bulging out all over Erik's body, and he appeared to be starting to decompose. The trees next to the street where they were standing started to violently sway, as though being rocked by a storm, although all else around was still. Quincy thought it seemed to be getting dark out, as though he had put on shades, even though the sun was fully visible in the clear blue sky. Quincy fell to his knees with his hands over his ears, got back up, went over to Erik and pushed him out of the road and back onto the lawn. As soon as they got onto the grass all of it stopped. The scream, the wind, the darkness, all of it. Erik had returned to normal appearance, but was crying and shaking. He got up and bolted over to the wooden fence that ran along the property line and stood against it facing out, as though facing a firing squad, a look of terror on his face. Quincy saw that Erik was covered in goose bumps, that his penis and testicles had receded almost completely into his body, and that he was trembling violently. "Erik...I..." Quincy stammered, but Erik immediately vanished and was gone. Quincy swayed in shock a little, got his bearings, turned, and began running full speed towards the dirt road. He ran as fast as he could for almost a full mile, before he collapsed crying and exhausted onto the ground. End of chapter 2
