This was the end of a month of torture at the second new school I have attended this past two years. Why does this always happen to me? It just seems no matter how hard I try to keep a low profile, my orientation always becomes common knowledge for small-minded individuals. I mean my life is hard enough being blind without bullies beating the living daylights out of me. TWO YEARS EARLIER I should probably introduce myself. My name is Alexander Bartholomew Christian and my family is relatively average in both composition and economic status. It consists of Mom, Dad, and two older siblings. Our parents met during their first year of college and got married just after graduation. They were both studying law when they found themselves in the same course together. Before they started law school, their parents threw a huge wedding for them. Two years later, my brother, Alan Jr., was born followed by my sister, Alyssa, two years after him. Mom and Dad thought they were done having children until I came along four years later so I was an "Oops baby." Both sets of grandparents had passed on by the time I turned five years old so I never got to know any of them well. We lived in a large home in the suburb of Park Ridge for many years. Mom had complications during her pregnancy with me that resulted in a medical abnormality. By the time I started kindergarten, my eyesight has totally failed and I was left in the dark. Doctors had diagnosed me shortly after being born so I had been learning Braille as well as working with specially built computers. My parents didn't believe in coddling me so I went to an average school. Working with a specialist in educating people with vision difficulties, I was able to attend regular classes and develop a straight-A grade point. Due to my blindness, I did not participate in either physical education or sports. My interests actually ran to music and creative writing. Both of these pursuits may seem odd for someone like me but, with today's technology, they are possible. My early childhood was quite sheltered since my father was a prosecuting attorney in our home state of Illinois. Knowing everything he did about crime and people, my two siblings and I weren't given much freedom to make friends or run around unsupervised. Mom went overboard as well since she was worried that I would be hurt. Dad believed that there were no such things as disabilities, only challenges. As a result, no one in my family was allowed to treat me any different than someone who could see. Being the youngest of three kids made my success even more important because I had to ready for anything else life might throw at me. This attitude stemmed from my father being orphaned at the age of 7 when a fire swept through his family home while he was in the hospital for a tonsillectomy. With no family to raise him, he ended up being shuttled between 6 different foster homes until he was adopted at the age of 13. Some of those home were good but didn't lead to a permanent home while others were a horror of abuse and neglect. February 11th is my birthday and I just turned 11 years old, which was the beginning of a year of torment for me. I now reached 5 feet 4inches tall and about 125 pounds, mostly from swimming and yoga. My mother kept my chocolate brown hair slightly longer than my neck because I wanted to be able to shield my face. She doesn't really like it since it blocks my deep blue eyes, which don't function anyway. I have attractive eyes, according to her, but I just wish they worked. With my fine nose and full mouth, people have called me everything from cute to handsome. Having no real memory of how I look, I can't give my own opinion. My biggest problem has nothing to do with my looks. Over the previous year, I began to experience strange dreams involving me and some of my friends from school, This wouldn't bother me normally, except that all the people I was imagining were boys. My parents supported everything me or my siblings wanted as long as we were happy and not hurting anyone else. When these strange dreams started, I got so quiet that Mom finally forced me to talk one day when we were shopping for a friend's birthday gift. As we sat in the mall food court, I couldn't bring myself to say anything and just let the tears fall. She held me until I was able to finally speak. In one long sentence I revealed all my darkest secrets and the shame I felt for thinking that way. With a slight giggle, Mom told me that she and Dad already suspected I might be gay ad were just waiting for me to tell them. I really shouldn't have been so worried since my brother Alan announced he was bisexual last year. My Dad originally transferred us all to a private school, due to security concerns after a high profile case. This move worked out better for my brother and sister, since both of them were athletic as well as intellectual and could fit into any crowd with little difficulty. I was small, artistic, and extremely shy so bullies felt I was fair game. Being blind, I was assigned an escort my first day of school. Here I wait in the front office when I heard a young male voice ask for the principal. The next moment, I am being introduced to a boy named Steven McMullan, who has been asked to be my guide. He is another 11 year old who has a most of the same classes as me. "Hello, I'm Steve. Do you prefer Alex or Alexander?," he asked. "Alex is fine with me," I replied. Introductions complete, I threw my bag over my shoulder and put my hand on Steve's elbow as he started his way to our lockers. My locker had been assigned next to his with a special keypad lock for me. Putting away my coat and extra supplies, we continued to English class. As we walked the halls, he told me a little about himself. There were five children in his family, who lived not too far from me. His oldest sister, Marie, had been born blind so he understood a little of how I felt. This was his first year at this school after a small problem at his old one. He didn't say what but I could tell from his voice it had been unpleasant. Steve mentioned he liked swimming, which I said was my favorite activity. We talked about going together some time soon. He talked with a slight lisp due to the braces he said he had just gotten a couple of months ago. Along the way I heard people call him "Fag" and "Queer" but he just kept walking until we got to the room. Steve's elbow tightened but he kept his pace steady until we got to the doorway. Inside we were greeted by Mrs. Sayers, who set both of us in seats near the front door to allow us an easy route in and out. She seemed really sweet and hoped I would be able to keep up. Showing her my specially built computer, she was amazed at how well it could operate and take notes for me. My tests would be given privately with the questions being read aloud while I typed my answers on my laptop. The other students came and filed in as the warning bell rang. Class was typical and at the five minutes mark, Steve and I got our things and headed out to my next class. Most of the day was alright with Steve being in the same class for everything but music, which he wasn't taking. After the last class, he walked with me to meet my mother. Introducing him to Mom, we exchanged phone numbers and addresses before I left for home. "So we made a friend," Mom said. "Do you like him?" "He seems nice and likes swimming. We want to go together some time soon." I answered. Mom said he looked cute so I asked her to describe him. Even though I was blind, I still remembered my colors and could imagine things very well. Steve was an inch taller than I but about the same weight. He had ash blond hair with deep green eyes on a cherubic face. She asked what I knew about him and why we were together. I explained about his sister Marie and that he had been assigned to help me through the halls. We lived about 5 blocks away from each other so I hoped we could become friends. My brother and sister had good days but took the school bus home which made them arrive later than me. I went to my room to start my homework when Alan walked in to ask how my day was. "Okay. I think I made a friend." I said "Good. Is he cute or gay?" he inquired. I explained what Mom had told me but didn't know about his preference. He was happy that I found someone who liked swimming since Alan always got ear infections from the chlorine. Alyssa had never cared for it since she started becoming concerned with her hair and stopped going as well. Leaving me to do my school work, Alan messed my hair, laughing as I struggled to straighten it out. He knows I hate when he does that because I can't see to fix it right. While I was figuring out my very first English assignment, my cell rang. It was Steve, according to the vocal identifier, so I picked up immediately. "Hey, what's up!" Steve shouted. Laughing, I replied, "Not much, just doing homework." We talked about the project and where to meet tomorrow, when I heard a male voice on the other end yelling for Steve. He apologized and got off the phone quickly, leaving me feeling like he meant to say something else. I didn't have time to think about it since Mom called us for dinner. Dad joined us for our "first day at a new school" meal. My parents had a strange sense of celebrating everything, no matter how small it might be. We talked about how our days went and he was excited that I seemed to make a friend. At our previous school, I was a loner who had been bullied because of my blindness, my small size, and my artistic interests. STEVEN'S VIEW Today I met a new kid at my school, who was blind. My sister Marie had been born without being able to see so I was familiar with those special needs. Alex was so cute and shy as we walked together to each class. His schedule mirrored mine except for his last one, which was music. We talked a little throughout the day about what we liked and I was glad to hear he was into swimming. How I hoped that we would be able to go together since my siblings hated it. He was really cute and I found myself attracted to him. I'm probably kidding myself since he's probably straight. It scared me when the other kids called me names while we were in the halls but I pretended not to hear. When he asked about my lisp, I told a story about having new braces, which wasn`t entirely a lie. My teeth had been fine but it had to be better than explaining my father hit me in the mouth. Even if I had told his that, I couldn't have mentioned it was because he didn't believe Mason had done what I claimed. That's something I don't want to reveal until I know he won't hate me. ALEXANDER'S VIEW The first week of school has gone really well for me with Steve still escorting me to all our classes. We talked more and more about our interests and made plans to go swimming on Saturday. Mom drove him home yesterday and talked to his father before he left for work. They seemed to get along and even agreed that Steve could stay at my house over the week-end. I was a little nervous since it was happening so fast and was unsure of how we could share my bed without me becoming excited. When Friday started, he told me he had his bag at school so we could go home together after class. Steve's voice was filled with so much excitement that I smiled as he gushed about the sleep-over. My music class was awful since I was so distracted by worries over this week-end. I stumbled through the two assigned pieces even though I had practiced them to perfection at home. I was so relieved when Steve came to escort me to my locker. Meeting my mother at the front door, we both got in the back seat for the short ride home. The plan was to finish our homework right away so we could have the entire week-end free to do anything we wanted. Spending an hour-and-a-half in my room, our homework was almost done, I showed Steve where my piano was since I still had to review the two pieces I flubbed in class. He sat with me amazed that I could play so beautifully without seeing the music or keys. Blushing, I explained that I learned to discern the notes by ear and could play using a special audio prompt in an earpiece. It only took me three or four times using the app before I could perform without it. After running through each composition twice, Mom called us for dinner. I led Steve to the dining room, having memorized the floor plan of our home. The rest of my family was there as I introduced him to everyone. Dad gave him a big hello as did Alan before we sat next to each other at the table. With Alyssa saying "Grace," we enjoyed a nice meal with everybody asking all sorts of questions about Steve and his family. All being said and done, it was the best time I had ever had during a family meal. STEVEN'S VIEW The meal at Alex's was so illuminating for me. I never thought that a family could be so loving and interactive. In my house, meals are stern, serious affairs where the only talking was my father asking each of us about our day, assigning chores, announcing future plans, or complaining about the difficulties he experienced. He worked as a dispatcher for a trucking company while finishing his accounting degree at nights. The company had belonged to our grandparents so it was important that he started learning how to run it efficiently. Once the meal was finished, we were to clear the table and go to our rooms. If we had no homework to do, then we were allowed to pursue whatever hobby we desired. I loved art and computer graphics with an idea of making that my career someday. Alex's family encouraged conversation about whatever they wanted, provided it wouldn't be make anyone ill. His parents were genuinely interested in what their children had to say or help them with any of their concerns. Tonight was Alyssa's turn to clear the table and when I offered to help she politely refused since I was a guest. I felt a little guilty as Alex led me upstairs to change into our swimsuits. In his room, he quickly stripped naked with no shyness or concern that I was there. It must be something he learned being blind because I still turned away from him while changing my clothes. I know it seems silly but I was nervous and afraid I might become aroused watching him. He had a cute firm ass and a caught a glimpse of his pubes before turning away out of shyness. There was a lap pool built into a year-round greenhouse so that the kids could exercise even in bad weather. We grabbed some towels and headed into a large glass wonderland filled with plants everywhere. In the middle of this amazing space was the pool which was heated and could be set for lap swimming.
