Classification: Kleenex Simon's Story Part 15: Weekend Camp The Second Night The boys had been sat around talking for a while when there was a call for Simon from outside the tent. It was the SPL's voice. Simon walked over to the tent door and looked out before slipping his trainers on and going out. Skip and the SPL were sat in the dining shelter. "Is every thing OK Simon?" Asked the SPL. "Fine. The Patrol is working as well as ever. Why?" Simon asked. "It's OK we're just checking as it is the first time you have run a Patrol on your own." The SPL said. "Good. We didn't think you'd have a problem but we had to check." Skip said. "What's happening to Mr Squeaky?" Simon asked. "The lads keep asking and I don't know what to tell them." "You won't be seeing much of him for the rest of camp. He is in with me contemplating his future as a Patrol Leader. You know we expect the highest standards from the PL's and he let the team down." The SPL answered. "So I am running the Patrol for the foreseeable future then?" Simon asked back. "You could put it that way. Does the responsibility feel heavy?" Skip asked. "I am more worried about letting the Patrol down than anything else." "Don't worry. You've not had any training yet so we are expecting you to make some mistakes. All we ask is that you do your best and we both know that you will." "Thanks for trusting in me." Simon said feeling very proud. "Don't stay up too late. Tomorrow may have an easy start, but there is a lot of work to be done." "OK." Simon replied before leaving them and returning to the tent. As he walked away he heard Skip and the SPL talking. He was sure he heard one of them ask the other if they thought he would be able to take the job on. It wasn't until he went back into the tent that he noticed that the PLs kit had gone too. The others were sitting talking quietly when he sat down. "How about a game of dare. Si'?" Robert asked with a cheeky grin. Simon knew this would be his biggest test yet if he agreed and also if he didn't. Simon considered his answer carefully. "Ok. But for 20 minutes only and not outside the Patrol's campsite." He said authoritatively. "James is dare master first." Robert declared. It was their custom to start with the youngest and work up. James just sat there grinning like the proverbial Cheshire Cat. "Ok Thomas. Your dare is to kiss any two bare bums." James said with a wicked smile. Thomas looked around the group. He wasn't sure how Alex was going to react so he pointed to Robert first. Robert calmly stood up and dropped his joggers and pants before bending over. There was a squeaky sucking sound before a soft pop that indicated the first kiss was complete. He looked round the group until he got to Simon. Simon stood up slowly and turned round before showing them his bum. He bent over and there was a little giggle from him as Thomas's lips made contact. Thomas sat down satisfied his dare was over for the time being. "Robby, you have to strip off and let anyone I choose measure your willy. Soft and hard." James said as Simon looked at him. Simon looked at Robert and shrugged his shoulders. Robert stripped off and lay back. He had decided that if he was to be measured then the measurer was going to have to do all the work. "Alex." James said. Alex looked in horror, first at Robert and then at Simon. His face flushed as he took the small ruler from James. He turned to Robby. "It's ok Alex. Just imagine you are measuring your own." Robert tried to reassure him, but it didn't really help much. Nervously Alex reached out, but just as he was about to touch Robert his nerve failed and he scurried off and hid his face in his sleeping bag. "OK guys. That's it for tonight. Get yourselves undressed and in to bed." Simon instructed them. He was mainly interested in taking the pressure off of Alex, but time was getting on too. Neither James nor Thomas was happy with this instruction, but knew better than to argue with Simon. One by one the torches (flashlights) went out. Simon however, notice that Thomas and James had moved their sleeping bags closer to the front door of the tent and were now huddled very close together. Robert had copied Simon's trick of joining their sleeping bags together and was lying next to Alex. Simon just smiled, got undressed and slipped in to bed. Robert's arm immediately curled around his neck and pulled them together. What Simon hadn't noticed was his other arm was stretched out and gently brushing Alex's hair back from his face. "Robby, I don't mind if you and Si' wanna . . . you know." Alex said quietly. "Thanks." Robert replied. "But that would leave you playing gooseberry and that wouldn't be right." Alex smiled at him. "Robby. Can I ask you a personal question?" Alex asked. "Sure what is it?" "Do you and Si' . . . wanna do me?" Robert was taken back by the forthrightness of the question. He didn't really know what to say. "If you want to play along, you can, but no-one is going to make you do anything you don't want to. Does that answer your question?" Simon just lay there. He knew that Robert was more diplomatic than he was and if they were to stand any chance at all Robert had to do the talking. "Do you want to have some fun with us?" Robert asked Alex. "I don't know. I'm not gay or anything like that, but for some reason it interests me. Do you know what I mean?" "Yea, kind of. I always wondered what it was like to make love to a girl." Robert fell silent. Alex had taken hold of his hand and was gently holding it against his chest. Robert could only guess and hope what was going to happen next, but his dreams weren't to be. Alex curled his own fingers around himself and as he did so, he let out a quiet gasp. It was the first time he had ever done this with anyone else around. Robert started moving his hand gently stroking up and down Alex's chest. Alex by now was totally engrossed by the new and exciting feelings he was experiencing, the thrill of having someone else so close to him as he took his pleasure to the limit. Simon propped himself up on one elbow. "Robby are you . . ." Simon started to say, but Robby shushed him. "Pleeeease." Alex started to say but it was too late. Robert too realised there was a new problem to be dealt with. "Hold on. I'll clean it up." Robert said quietly to Alex as he disentangled himself from Simon. A few seconds later as Alex's sleeping bag zip was being pulled down, Robert handed him some tissues. Temptation proved too much for Robert as Alex started to clean himself up he sneaked a quick preview of Alex's pride and joy. The boys settled down for the night. Thomas and James were engrossed in some game or other and Simon had to quieten them down several times. Alex, Simon and Robert on the other hand lay quietly. Simon and Robert were both snuggled down together and were happy just to lay together and cuddle. Alex though, was feeling left out. He wasn't sure about the games the others the others were playing, but he knew he hated being left out. He moved his sleeping bag closer to Robert and when he was close by him he carefully reached his arm over and stroked the back of Robert's head. Robert rolled on to his back and hugged Alex to him being very careful not to trigger another accident. The morning dawned bright and fresh, unfortunately the boys didn't. At around 8 o'clock skip wandered around the campsite. Most of the Patrols were up and about, but one wasn't. Simon's. Skip looked in through the doors of the tent. He smiled as he remembered his days as a Scout. Fortunately the boys had all moved around in the night and were in a big huddle in the middle of the tent making it hard to distinguish who was huddled up with who. Skip glanced at his watch before walking to their dining shelter. He picked up the big billy and the ladle. He hadn't done this since he was a PL himself. Carefully he opened the tent doors at either end of the tent before he started banging the billy with the ladle. The boys woke with a start and the next few moments saw boys diving out of bed in instant panic as they tossed dirty clothes and bedding all over the place as they looked for something to wear. Eventually they emerged from the tent and were greeted by Skip and the rest of the Troop, laughing. They had made a superb comedy sketch which the others appreciated even if they didn't. Skip told them it was too late for breakfast, but Simon had an ace up his sleeve. Simon and Alex walked across to the dining shelter and opened their food box. It was crammed full of straw. Skip looked on knowingly as the others looked puzzled. Thomas and James were busy cleaning the table down and preparing it for breakfast. Robert in the mean time was sorting the tent out. A few minutes later all five of them were sat down eating a warm breakfast of porridge that had been cooking overnight in a hay box. The only thing that was missing was a hot drink and that would be ready when the washing up was completed. "Well Simon, you seem to have everything organised." Skip said with a satisfied smile. "I had a good teacher, besides I know what I am like in the mornings." He chuckled softly to himself as he glanced quickly at Robert. Robert was the one behind the hay box idea despite his PL's objections. They were all glad he had talked the PL round to the idea. After breakfast, the Troop donned uniform and fell in around the flag. According to tradition, they held a Scouts' Own. A sort of simple church service that the Scouts themselves organise and run. Most of the boys disliked singing, but Simon, Robert and James made up for that by singing a recent hit from the charts that could be interpreted to have religious ulterior meanings. By the end of Scouts' Own, the whole Troop were feeling very happy and whistling or humming the same tune. Something Simon, Robert and James would regret later when the tune would get on their nerves. The morning was spent dismantling and putting away the pioneering projects from the previous day. It wasn't the most favourite of jobs, but a high degree of team work soon had it completed leaving the boys some time to start packing their own gear ready for camp to be struck and the journey home later that afternoon. Simon's Patrol had just sat down to lunch when the SPL came running over. "Simon! Simon! You have to see Skip immediately!" He said breathing hard. Robert looked at Simon as Simon returned his look. "Alex. Take over the Patrol. Robert, come with me." Simon ordered. Simon knew it was going to be something serious because the SPL never ran anywhere. He always sent one of the younger boys. Simon, Robert and the SPL all ran off to Skip's tent. Skip was standing by the door with Robert's dad sat quietly in one corner. "Simon, you're mum has been admitted to hospital." Skip said calmly. Simon's eyes lit up. "The baby!" There was a pause. "But that isn't due yet, not for another few weeks." Simon said excitedly. "I know." Said Robert's dad. "But there is something else." He paused. Simon looked at him with an expression of suspense. Robert wrapped his arms around Simon from behind and hugged him tight. "Your mum started labour prematurely and your dad was driving her to the hospital when," he paused again, "when there was an accident." Simon's heart pounded. Robert could feel it through his chest. Robert's face was almost as pale as Simon's. "A van hit the drivers side of the car." "NOOOOOOOO!" Simon yelled at the top of his voice. The birds scattered from the treetops as his voice rang out. "Come along son. Let's get you to the hospital." Robert was shaking from the shock of the news and Simon was almost a gibbering wreck as Robert's dad took both boys to his car. The journey to the hospital was slightly longer than it might have been. A point Simon picked up on, but Robert's dad didn't say why he hadn't taken the more direct route, which would have taken them past the wreckage of his dad's car. They arrived at the hospital and as they walked from the car, Simon was shaking like a leaf. All he could think about was his parents. How happy they were together, all three of them. How they had smiled and waved as he left them on the Friday evening. What was he going to see? As they got closer to the Emergency entrance he became more and more scared. "Hey! Take it steady. That's my hand you're crushing!" Robert said as the pain became unbearable. Simon eased his grip without looking at Robert. They went in and Robert's dad talked to the girl at the desk before they sat down for a few moments. A doctor came over and after talking to Robert's dad for a few moments, before leading them to Simon's mother. They entered the room. Simon's mother was laying there. She looked pale, but was conscious. "Mum." Simon said trying hard not to let his emotions show. "How are you?" He asked as he wrapped his arms around her neck carefully avoiding the tubes and wires. "Hello son." She said in a voice that was barely louder than a whisper. Simon couldn't control his emotions any longer and they broke like a dam and his tears flowed like water as it rushes on its way down a valley. "There. There." She said trying to calm him. "How's the baby?" He asked through his tears, but he never received an answer. "MUM! MUM!" Simon cried as Robert and his dad tried to ease him away so the doctors and nurses could do their job. The noises from the equipment had changed from beeps to continuous tones and Simon realised the worst. Robert was sat in a chair. He was pale and crying freely when Simon sat on his lap and wrapped his arms around him and hugged him so tightly that Robert feared for his life, but he never said a word. The two boys did their best to console each other. If the truth was know, both boys thought almost as much of the other's parents as they did there own. Robert's dad was talking to one of the doctor's who was planning on performing a caesarean in an attempt to save the baby. Robert's dad and the boys left the room. Robert's mother was sat outside. The news had brought her straight over from Church. Robert tried his best to comfort Simon as his parent's tried their best to support both of them. They all knew some difficult times were ahead of them. "Where's my dad?" Simon asked through his tears and his sobs. "He's in surgery at the moment and all we can do to help him at the moment is pray. Let's just stay here for a while." Robert's dad said. A few minutes later they heard the cries of a newborn baby. Simon's expression changed as he realised that his dad and he were the only family this poor little baby had in the world. The door opened and the doctor walked over to Robert's parents and spoke quietly to them before talking to Simon. Simon entered the room; he looked first at his mother who was covered up before going over to the nurse who was holding his baby brother. "May I?" He asked the nurse. She started explaining to him how to hold the baby. He tried to explained he had been to antenatal classes with his mother, but it fell on deaf ears. Carefully he held the little bundle as tears of joy mixed with tears of grief. Robert was stood by his side trying hard to smile. Up until now he had never successfully imagined Simon in the role of brother. "Well little one. I want you to meet your Uncle Robert." Simon said softly. Robert's eyes refilled with tears yet again. His love for Simon was only equalled by his love for his parents and this little boy came a close second with his own brother. Simon turned to face his mother. He carefully drew the sheet back from over her face and lay the baby on her chest. It would be the only time they would ever meet, but Simon knew in his heart that meet they must. "So what's the baby's name?" The nurse asked. Looking at Robert's parents. "Michael Robert." Simon answered without looking away from his mother or his brother. The nurse looked at Simon in surprise. "The fair one is ours and I guess the other two are too for the time being." Robert turned to his dad and gave him the biggest hug ever. He suddenly realised just how much his parents had come to love Simon. "Can I take little Michael up to see our dad when he comes out of surgery?" Simon asked trying hard to regain control of his tears. "I can't see any problem with that as long as you take one of the nurses with you." The doctor replied with a smile. "But for now, can we put him into a cot so he can rest?" "Where do I have to lay him?" Simon asked trying hard to squeeze every moment he could out of what little time he would be allowed to hold his little brother. "Follow me." The nurse said as she led the way to a side ward. Simon carefully lay the baby down on his back. Just before drawing the covers up he very gently kissed little Michael on the forehead. He turned and left the room. Robert found him out in the hallway; tears were flowing freely again as they both hugged each other long and hard. Robert's dad hugged the two boys to him as he eased them to a nearby chair and sat down. For the time being the three of them shared in a common loss and tried desperately to console each other. "Mike has just come out of theatre." Robert's mother said with a very solemn expression and tone to her voice. The three guys all knew that Mike's condition was still critical and could still go either way. Robert's mum led them up to the recovery room, her arm was wrapped round her husband and Robert's was wrapped around Simon. When they arrived, the nurse gave Robert and Simon a puzzled look before trying to take Robert's dad off to one side to talk to him, but he insisted they all stay together. She explained that Mike had sustained multiple serious injuries any one of which could still become life threatening. He stood a better chance now, but his chances still weren't very good. Simon's expression didn't change. He couldn't feel any worse than he did already. Robert's parents went in to see Mike first. He just lay there with even more tubes and wires coming from him than his wife had. Robert's dad left. It nearly broke his heart to see his life-long friend lying there. "Wait a minute son." Robert's dad said to Simon as he gave him a hug before sitting down and burying his face in his hands. Simon entered the room fearing the worst. He let out a gasp when he saw his father lying there. He could feel the tears building up inside him when he heard his mother's voice "be brave son, be brave. Little Michael needs you." He looked around as hope suddenly brightened his gloomy heart, but he realised he was only imagining he was hearing a voice he would never hear again. Simon sat down in the chair beside the bed and carefully took his father's hand in his own. Simon just sat there looking and praying for his father to get better. Robert's mother just stood there with her hand on his shoulder trying to reassure him without breaking his thoughts. "Son." Came a quiet voice. "You are the man of the house now, at least until I am better." "Dad!" Simon said with surprise. "I have some one to show you. I'll be right back!" Simon quickly walked out of the room before running back through the halls to collect his brother. He returned a few minutes later and gently held up his little brother for his father to see. "Dad, this is Michael Robert. Your youngest son." Simon said proudly as he very carefully lay the infant on Mike's right arm so he cuddle the baby. "Can you fetch Robby for me?" Mike asked. "I'll go." Robert's mother said leaving what was left of a shattered family together. Robert came in and sat on Simon's knee, wrapping an arm round his shoulders as he did so. "Boys, I know I have sometimes been hostile towards you and the way you are, but I want you to know that I truly am happy that you have both found true love and I want you both to promise me that you will look after Michael and yourselves." Mike looked at each boy in turn. They could both see in his eyes how much he loved them. Robert and Simon both bent forward and wrapped an arm around Mike and the baby as they lay their heads gently on his blanket covered chest. They stay there for what seemed like hours until a continuous high-pitched whistle suddenly shattered the quiet of the room. Robert's mum pulled the boys away and picked up the baby ushering them all out of the room. The nurse took the baby as Robert's parents tried to console what to them now seemed like their extended family. The doctor confirmed Simon's worst fears a few minutes later. They were all shown to a side room where they were allowed to start grieving in peace and privacy.
