The Travis Theory By Remmy Meggs

Doctor Latit Suresh stood before another two hundred DNA scientists at `Nu-Gen Scientific' "Nu-Gen has been in business since 1969. They started out as a biotech firm hoping to do stem cell research. Somewhere around 1975, because of stem cell failures, they went heavy into DNA research to fix those problems and they did fix them and they were good at it. Out of twelve such facilities around the United States alone, they were the top firm. However, they were not interested in cloning or stem cells any longer, the nation had been crying for something more interesting... babies."

"In Vitro Fertilization was hardly a new idea. Since before 1940s, scientists had been working in the field with animals. By 1980, several labs across America opened up specializing in IVF births with humans. Breakthroughs garnered Nobel Prizes in science until 2009 when it was for a related part of physics."

"Today, Nu-Gen Scientific has been awarded the largest non government grant ever for DNA research, more importantly the research is for genetic treatment, not only for parents, but for the safety of the child, and a better world tomorrow."

Doctor Suresh paused and smiled, "Ladies and gentlemen, you have come from all over the world to be a part of this, and I am happy to announce that by the year 2014, DNA strategy will surpass one hundred fold what we have accomplished in the last ten years." Suresh paused waiting for the applause to subside, and then he continued, "The grant from Libby was for a total of not less than three trillion dollars, making all of you partners for a better tomorrow."

Suresh received a standing ovation. Doctor Merrick Randall stood up and shook his hand and went to the podium. Then the noise subsided, he smiled at the audience, "We have four years ladies and gentlemen to do what should take less than two years. If we can accomplish the outline and goals that the honored Doctor Suresh has planned, then we will be able not only to create the child of a parents dreams using their own eggs and sperm, we can do it outside of the womb, causing less grief and hardship on a family that has never been witnessed before."

He waited again for the applause to subside, "Each of you has received a packet this morning that outlines in detail what your labs and the associate you have will tackle. The information you send will go into the largest and most complex database the world has ever seen, it is larger than the entire database system for the United States. This information will facilitate down to the exact quark, the DNA sequence for each child. Again, that will be up to you. Not all labs will be working on the same project, each of you has a specific are. Depending upon your lab and associate size, you may have more than one project your lab is working on. This information along with information from Universities around the world will change how we live, think, and take care of each other."

Doctor Randall turned to the men and women behind him, and was ushering someone to stand, "He turned to the audience, David, Ayla, would you stand for a moment so everyone can see you? Ladies and gentlemen I would like to introduce David and Ayla Bassano. In 1996, David and Ayla came to us. They had tried in vitro fertilization six times. It seems nothing would work." He watched as the couple sat down, after the applause had stopped. He continued, "They asked if we could help them."

"I have to admit I was very skeptical, with that many losses I wondered if this beautiful couple could take another loss. That is when Doctor Suresh came over. He made a commitment then out of nowhere and guaranteed a live birth. Since this was all a first time test, he asked David and Ayla to fill out a questionnaire of what they wanted the attributes of the child to be."  The auditorium became quiet and then Doctor Randall continued, "You have already heard of him, you know the name, after all it is in the newspapers at least once a month for the last four years. Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to introduce fourteen-year-old Aaron Bassano, our new Head of DNA Ethics, and a nominee for the United Nations with the same title."

A boy that looked like he may have been ten years old came out from behind the curtain. He received a standing ovation. The boy had twelve doctorates, and was fluent in one hundred and forty seven languages just to start the list of accomplishments. The boy shook Doctor Randall's hand then took the microphone off the podium and held it until everyone sat down.

"I think I should tell you that there a lot of holes in DNA adjustment and in vitro fertilization." He raised his arm above his head with his palm down, referring to his height. The opening statement made the assembly roar with laughter.

"Yes it is funny, but I have had very short progress with adjusting to it." The boy meant it as funny but in all seriousness; he did have a problem with it. He waited for the hall to calm down. "My mother loves how she can pick out clothes from online stores and know they will fit in advance." Again, there was a roar of laughter.

"Those holes in the process are we want you to find. We can now pick hair, eye, and skin color, that is the easy part, but still very expensive. Manipulating higher functions is a tedious and dangerous task. We know that we use one hundred percent of our brain; however, we do not know exactly how it is being used. Careful DNA study can heighten brain activity where we lack now. For instance, not everyone needs to be a genius, maybe that would be better for the world, but what makes people unmotivated, what creates procrastination? We know that this is an issue with receptors, and they can be changed."

"We can also get rid of most of the diseases we have now, by adjusting the immune system. Although Doctor Suresh and Doctor Rahna of Nu-Gen tell me we can get rid of cancer, get better use of senses that are already present, and even may use splicing to teleport, we could be stretching our imaginations, and converge on the science fiction writers. By doing such things, they will have nothing more to write about." The gathering guffawed and laughed more.

"With modern medicine we could be able to live longer. That is where we get into a bind however. If we live longer then we have an overpopulation problem. We have overpopulation now and the world suffers for it, so living even a longer lifespan would be deadly. We know we can stop some diseases, but not others, at least at the present time. So what we are about to embark on is a journey of theory, because although all things may be possible, it is most probable that they should not be used."

"It will be up to you to find those holes, but it will be up to a committee to decide what will be used and what will not. You must understand how important your work is. You could easily be the next Nobel Prize winner, but that does not mean the design will be used, but that discovery is like a springboard to many other things that are yet to be discovered, and that can make a difference in the world."

Aaron put the microphone back on the podium and received another standing ovation. He bowed several times until he disappeared behind the curtain as the meeting continued. Aaron thought that three trillion dollars was a lot for a wild guess, and he had misgivings that he could not tell anyone about. He wondered if he were the only one in their right mind.

The boy became a doctor because he did not want what happened to him to happen to someone else. This was more than just an issue with height; yes, there was more to it than that, and only his parents and Suresh new the real truth. Aaron was going to make sure mistakes did not happen again.
