CHAPTER FIVE JESSE'S TRIAL Everything was going great for Peter and Jesse they had gained weight and had grown a good three inches. Richard let Jeff and Peter share a room and anytime Bobby was over he slept with Jesse. The house rang with laughter something that made Richard feel that life was worth it. There were times when Peter and Jesse still fell back into not trusting anyone, but those times were getting farther and farther apart. Jesse's soccer team had made it into the semi finals and everyone was excited. There first game would be the next weekend and everyone was looking forward to it. Jesse was still getting headaches though he wasn't telling Peter about them he would just take some aspirin then go lay down for a while. The week went to fast for every ones liking but now it was the weekend and the first semi final game was there. Jesse was up at seven in the morning though his game wasn't till ten, he was just to excited to sleep any longer. He had taken some aspirin already. Peter, Jeff and Richard woke up and saw that Jesse was ready to play. Peter saw that his bro was excited, " You ready bro, gonna win one for me?" " Uh huh," As he picked up his juice Peter and Jeff saw that his hand was shaking. " Relax bro, your going to do great." " I am relaxed, just happy to be this far in the series." Then it was time, the boys piled into the car and off they went. Jesse sitting in the back with Peter his eyes closed resting. The field came into view and Richard had parked as the boys climbed out Jesse headed over to join his team. The smile on his face bright. Ten o'clock the game started Jesse bouncing up and down the field. By the time the game was half over Jesse's team was leading with two points. Jesse had been given a break and was sitting on the bench watching the game. When he took some more aspirin, little did he know that Peter was watching him as he took them. Gently nudging Jeff he pointed down to Jesse. " I think his headaches are back, I just saw him taking some aspirin again." " So that's where they been going, dad bought a large bottle a week ago and it is over half gone." " I'm gonna kick his butt, he was suppose to tell me if they came back." " Talk to him after the game, this is something he likes." " Well so far he has gotten two of the five points so it is like his game. Look there he goes again." With Jeff and Peter cheering him on Jesse went in and started playing again. Though this time he was running a bit slower. Jeff was looking at his dad and talking when Peter started running down the steps and screaming his brothers name. Looking up Richard could just see Peter running out onto the field and his brother Jesse laying there. " Call and ambulance son." he said as he jumped down and ran to join Peter. Peter was pushing players out of the way trying to get to his brother. Finally falling to his knees and grabbing Jesse. " Bro I am here talk to me, come on Jesse please." Richard had joined Peter and could hear Peter talking to his bro who laid motionless in his arms his small chest gently moving up and down. " Don't leave me Jesse come on say something please." Peter cried tears slowly streaking his face. Richard could hear the wail of the ambulance as it drew into the parking lot and then out onto the field. Ten minutes later Jesse was lifted onto the stretcher and into the ambulance Peter begging to go with his brother. The young attendant finally gave in and helped Peter into the back beside his brother, holding onto Jesse's hand as they raced to the hospital, Jeff and his dad following behind. The hospital was busy, but Jesse was taken in right away, the doctor immediately ordering x-rays and MRI as he was doing this she had Peter sit in the chair beside his bed. As she waited she got all the information she could from Peter. Then when Richard got there he gave her the rest. She had just finished the admitting forms when Jesse was brought back the nurse bring the x-rays with her at the same time. A quick look and the doctor left the room and went to her office. There she made a call to a neuro-surgeon, asking for him to come and look at a 13 year old boy who was in a coma. As the Doctor was waiting for the surgeon to show she walked in and checked on Jesse. " Is my bro gonna be okay?" Peter asked. " He sure is young man, but he is going to be in here for a while." " Your gonna fix him right, I mean heal him?" " Yes I am, Now I have to talk to your dad, so why don't you stay here and keep your little brother company?" " Thanks doctor." The doctor found Richard and Jeff sitting in the waiting room both looking worried. She didn't know exactly how she was going to tell them what she the was wrong. She was still debating the problem when the neuro-surgeon showed up. Taking this as a distraction she needed she showed the other doctor the x-rays and MRI Results. " Have you told the parents yet?" " No I was waiting for conformation, but now I have to the dad is sitting out front with one of his sons," " Well I guess we better do it and get a room set up this could take a lot of hours." " I think we should go in and see Jesse also, his brother is sitting with him waiting." " Lets get them all together and do it." Five minutes later Peter was sitting on Jeff's laps as Richard stood beside them. As they listened to the doctors, Jeff could feel the tension in Peter's already tight body. " I think it would be best if you Mr. Martin were to take your boys home, Jesse will be in surgery for many hours, as for him waking up, while I honestly can't say when that will happen or if it will. Hearing that Peter just broke down and cried Jeff holding him, but that didn't seem to help. Through tears filled eyes Peter and Jeff watched as the orderlies wheeled their brother away. Richard himself crying sat with the boys. It was Jeff who first thought of Graham and Edith, Still silently crying Jeff, left Richard and Peter and walked out to the waiting room where he made a collect call to the grandparents. Edith took the call and when she heard that Jesse was in the hospital started crying herself, through her sobs and sniffles she told Jeff that they would be there in a few hours. It was hours later when the doctor came out and told the Peter and his family that Jesse was in recovery and would be there for a while then moved to the intensive care unit. " Mr. Martin we are lucky, if this had gone on any longer, we wouldn't have been able to do anything, as it is right now, Jesse will have a much better chance at a full recovery." " Thanks, how soon can we see him?" " I would say in about four hours." " I'm staying." whispered Peter. " Son you should try and get some rest, your being tired won't help your brother." " I AM STAYING." Yelled Peter this time. The doctor looked at Richard and seeing that there was nothing anyone could do he gave up. " I'll make sure he can be with Jesse. Then when he is moved to another room we'll get him a cot." The nurse brought in a cot with a pillow and blankets for Peter. She had them set up as Peter was sitting in the recovery room beside his brother holding his hand. His sad eyes never leaving Jesse's face as he watching him sleep. The white bandages wrapping his head made Jesse look like he was dead, but the slow breathing proved other wise. The nurse tried to get Peter to go eat, but he refused saying he wasn't leaving his brother, so they brought him a sandwich and juice. Peter had fallen asleep in his chair so if Jesse woke he would see Peter there with him. The doctors came in and moved Jesse to his room then he came and got Peter. That way they would be together. For two months Peter slept beside him. Yes Peter did his school work. Each night members of the soccer team showed up to see how he was doing. It was during the start of the Jesse's third month that Jesse woke. Peter was there and smiled. " I knew you would wake one day." All Jesse did nod and smile slightly. "I'm gonna call dad and Jeff." Shaking his head Jesse made it clear he didn't want to be alone. Peter held onto Jesse's hand as the doctor came in and checked him over. " Well young man your doing really well soon you will be able to go back to playing with your brothers." " I hope so." Jesse whispered with a small smile. Richard Martin and Jeff showed up after school both were happy to see that Jesse was awake. " Jesse it is good to see you awake, I hope you come home soon we miss you." Richard leaned over and gave him a kiss on the forehead " Just take it slow son, we will be here for you. You just get well." For another three weeks Jesse stayed in the hospital slowly recovering. Then he was sent home. Jeff and Peter had gotten closer. Jesse was up and walking around slowly. The stitches had been removed the week before so now his hair was starting to grow back, blond as ever though he still wasn't talking he would smile once in an while. Bobby came over on the weekends so spend time with Jesse. It was about a six weeks later and Peter was sound asleep curled up next to Jeff when he woke hearing a scream coming from Jesse's room. It was a race for Peter to get to his brother before Richard or Jeff did, and he just made it. Finding Jesse curled up in a tight ball in the middle of his bed. This was to much Peter jumped on the bed and cuddled his little brother whispering to him that it was okay that nothing could hurt him. Still Jesse cried. For the rest of the night Peter stayed with his brother holding him. It was like that for the next two weeks every night Jesse waking up screaming and every night Peter was there holding him. Jeff was there also. Richard had called the doctor after the third night and was told to bring Jesse back in for some new x-rays and another MRI. " Mr. Martin, it could be just the healing, or there could be other problems, so the sooner you get him here the better it will be." " How soon can it be done?" " Two weeks from today, I will set it up now, if anything changes just bring him in, but for now if it is just night mares then there is little to worry about." Those two weeks were hard on everyone as they all got little sleep. By the time the MRI and x-rays were done Peter had lost five pounds and was looking this he was about to explode, the only thing keeping him in one piece was Jeff and the fact he knew his brother was going to be okay. Peter's grades had also started to fall which gave his teachers concern, but there was nothing they could do, he did his home work and wasn't disruptive in class so they let it slide. At home Jesse was doing some school work, though most of the time he just slept. The hospital had given Richard a prescription for sleeping pills and was told to make sure that Jesse took one twenty minutes before bed and that hopefully he would sleep through the night.
