Chapter 16 Pt. 1

Reiley: “Does this concern our vote Garrett?”

Garrett: “Yes it does. And there's some things you need to know. Things that Nika made a promise not to tell or talk about. About what Tanner's home life is like and what he's goes through.”

Nika: “Garrett, no, you can't!”

Garrett: “Yes, yes I can Nika. You may have promised him something.....i didn't. Blake: “I take it, it's bad Garrett?”

Garrett: “It's hurtful Blake, that's for sure. Dakota's on our football team, and I'm over there sometimes. And their family's not playing with a full deck.”

Reiley: “How so Garrett?”

Garrett: “Reiley, I admire you in protecting the others. But you disappoint me in not trusting Nika. I don't know how he did it, but Nika stumbled onto Tanners problems somehow. The kid has no outlet at home. His parents seem to have had kids, just to have kids. I've never in all the times I've been over there seen either of them hug any of their three kids. And if Tanners not being ignored by them, then it's Dakota pushing Tanner around, and punching him for fun. The kid is almost like a lab rat in how he's treated. And the sad part is, I think he prefers the abuse to being ignored, because at least that way someone is paying some kind of attention to him. You guys do what you want, I'm not gonna start preaching. I've said what I have to say. But next time your at home feeling safe and cared for. Enjoy the feeling, but at the same time think of Tanner, and that it's a feeling he's never had....at least in his own home. And another thing, I'm not telling you guys what to do, but I'll make you all a promise. If you take care of Tanner, believe me when I say, I'll take care of Dakota. Enough's enough!”

KC: “Phewwwww! Alright, what now guys?”

Reiley, whispering: “I didn't know guys......I didn't know.”

Garrett: “I'm going back in the kitchen. The salads are done Blake, so we can eat whenever your done out here. But do what you need to do.”

Blake: “Thanks Garrett, thanks. And we'll be in in a few minutes, the meats done and I'm toasting the buns now.

Nika: “Ok guys, we need to make a decision, cause that means Jace and Tanner will be in in a little while too. We need to either vote for or against him, or agree to put this off till another time and pick it up later.”

Cody: “That means its up to you and KC, Reiley. We have seven for, and three undecided. Well two anyway, and Nika's vote that's cast last.”

Reiley: “Well KC, what do you think?”

KC: “Yah, what the fuck, I was gonna vote for him all along anyway. I just wanted to drag it out a bit so we could talk about his attitude and if we were gonna do something about it, or just let him go rogue?”

Reiley: “Those are kinda my thoughts too!”

Blake: “Make no mistake, we're gonna have a talk with him guys. He's not gonna carry on with “Business as usual” if he cares about our gesture and wants to come on-board.”

Reiley: “How do we know he even wants to come on board? Has anybody even bothered to ask him?”

Nika: “Trust me guys, someone who has no one definitely wants to come on board.”

KC: “I hope you mean that Blake, about talking to him, just because I can fight, doesn't mean I like to fight. And you do realize that you and I will be doing the lion's share of the fighting....don't you?”

Blake: “Yah KC, I do, and we'll speak to him about the conditions.”

Cody: “Yah, and besides KC, no one really likes to fight.”

Wesley, staring at Travis, and Travis back at him smiling: “Well, I wouldn't exactly say that's true guys.”

KC: “Lovely!”

Nika: “Ok KC, so you're a yes?”

KC: “Yah, sorry Reiley, but I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt. Like it or not, we all love him, and he's already one of us weather or not we make it official. Or weather we call him a “Posse” member or not. Besides, I think he can change, and I think with time, he will change.”

Cody: “True, true. Time will heal. So that's that. It's your call Reiley!”

Blake: “Yah old friend, it all comes down to you. Make it or break it Reiley. But either way, his future is on your conscience. And you know now that there's more to him than the personality he shows. He fakes it Reiley, he's a faker.”
Nika: “Common Reiley, think with your heart and make us proud!”

Travis and Wesley, chanting: “Reiley-Reiley-Reiley-Reiley-Reiley!”

Everyone joining in: “REILEY-REILEY-REILEY-REILEY-REILEY-REILEY!!!

Reiley: “Alright, Alright, Fuck Guys! So be it. If it's what you want, then fine. But remember what we talked about and we need to have a talk with him.”

Blake: “We will. But we also can't jump ship the first time he acts out....and he IS gonna act out and get us in trouble at times.”

Nika: “That's fine, I don't think any of us expect him to change overnight, but we do expect a gradual change. And as long as I see him making an attempt and progressing, than it's enough for me.”

Blake: “Yah Reiley, and you can't just leave it at “if it's what you guys want, then fine.” You need to believe in your decision, and not just say that it's just cause of what we wanted!”

Cody: “He's right Reiley.”

Reiley: “Don't sweat it guys. You had me way back, right after Nika asked us, “have you ever wondered why he acts the way he does, and have you ever seen anyone hug him...ever?” I was sold way back then!”

Sasha: “Then why'd you draw it out so long Reiley?”

Blake: “To make a point Sash!”
Reiley: “Yah, sorry guys. But I had to look out after all of us and be sure everyone took this vote very seriously. After all, we've never had a vote like this before. And after the fast vote for Sash, Sequoia, Trav, and Wes, on the boat. I wanted to slow things down a bit and make sure everyone weighs what the consequences will be.”

Blake: “It's a big responsibility, we all know that.”

Cody: “Yah, I just wish parents were as careful. What's the old saying, anyone can have a child but you need a license to have a dog?”

Nika: “Something like that.”

Blake: “Lets go eat guys!”

Reiley: “Ummm, not quite yet Blake.”

Blake: “Why, we're done?”

Reiley: “Nika?”

Nika: “Haha, he's right Blake. I now vote for Tanner too. He's officially in!”

That was it, it was a done deal. We then made our way back into the kitchen as Tasha and Garrett were sitting at the table picking little clumps of potato salad out of the bowl with their fingers, and feeding it into each others mouth. All the while lost with a look of love staring into each others eyes. All very revolting.....YUK! I told them, “Knock it off freaks, let's eat.”

Tasha: “How'd it go guys, are there more of the “nerd-heard” now or what?”

Garrett: “Haha, the nerd-heard, cool.”

Sasha ran towards the back yard to get the two instigators of the group, as we all walked around to the various dishes on the counter filling our plates. Tanner and Jace came back in, dripping and wrapped in towels, shortly after Sasha had returned, and we all began to eat. We all sat down, and began to eat and talk. Everyone was happy, and Tanner looked just like he'd always fit in with all of us. And somehow I realized he had. And that really, even without the vote, he was one of us. And I also noticed how much happier he seemed in the last year or so. And the “changes” he'd been going through since he began increasing his time up here with us. And how his world had changed since then.

And another thing. Some of the rest of us may not have noticed it. But he wasn't as angry as he used to be. I mean old habits are hard to break, and there's still the fiasco at the Sheriffs office, and he still has an X rated mouth. But even with the frustration he still showed when that “wire” got crossed in his brain, and he went on a tangent, but he still didn't show the outright anger that he did in the years before. And as I watched him, I could tell that he recognized it too. That he was quite aware of what he was going through, especially at home. And that being up here with us was somehow healing him in a way that will make us all better for having him a part of our Posse. And even more important, a part of each others life.

As we were eating, Blake stood up and said, “Everyone, listen up.”

Everyone quieted down and focused on Blake as he said, “we have an important announcement everyone.” Everyone smiled, except Tanner who was dumbfounded as to what was going on. Even Tash and Garrett were smiling. I said, “Go ahead Blake.”

Blake: “Nah, this is mostly your doing Nika, so I'm not stealing your thunder. You tell him!”

Everyone looked at Tanner who was now starting to fidget a little and looked around very nervously. Then he said, “What, what the fuck did I do now guys?”

I replied, “You became lucky number eleven Tanner!”

Tanner: “I already am eleven Nika?”

I walked around behind him and began rubbing his shoulders and said, “No Tanner, not eleven years old, you're number eleven in the Posse now. We voted while you were swimming with Jace, and your officially now one of us......congrats buddy!”

Everyone smiled or yelled something at him as they all walked around the table and approached him, giving him a playful punch in the arm (not quite as hard as Dakota).

And through it all Tanner only said, “For real? You really mean it?” As he just sat there with a wicked smile on his face like he was the real Oliver Twist, and he had just been adopted. He didn't need to say much because his smile said it all. And what's more, every one of us saw it in his face and his body language, and knew at that moment we had made the right choice. For the first time in his life, he was part of something special. And the most important thing of all, was that he was part of something he wanted to be a part of. And he didn't have to ask for it, or beg for it. Instead, it was given to him. Freely and openly. He was chosen by others. He was special and he was selected. He finally, now had people around him who wanted him as well!

Changes

Oh, yeah
Mmm

Still don't know what I was waitin' for
And my time was runnin' wild
A million dead end streets and
Every time I thought I'd got it made
It seemed the taste was not so sweet
So I turned myself to face me
But I've never caught a glimpse of
How the others must see the faker
I'm much too fast to take that test

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Turn and face the strange
Ch-ch-changes
Don't want to be a richer man
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Turn and face the strange
Ch-ch-changes
Just gonna have to be a different man
Time may change me
But I can't trace time
Mmm, yeah

I watch the ripples change their size
But never leave the stream
Of warm impermanence
So the days float through my eyes
But still the days seem the same
And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
They're quite aware of what they're goin' through

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Turn and face the strange
Ch-ch-changes
Don't tell them to grow up and out of it
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Turn and face the strange
Ch-ch-changes
Where's your shame?
You've left us up to our necks in it
Time may change me
But you can't trace time

Strange fascination, fascinatin'
Ah, changes are takin'
The pace I'm goin' through

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Turn and face the strange
Ch-ch-changes
Oh, look out you rock 'n' rollers
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Turn and face the strange
Ch-ch-changes
Pretty soon now you're gonna get older
Time may change me
But I can't trace time
I said that time may change me
But I can't trace time
