I lay awake in bed. It's still dark in the room. I looked over at the clock, and its still only 5:23. I have seven minutes until the alarm goes off and I'm very nervous. "You awake" I heard from the bunk above. "Yes, and so are you I presume." "I'm so nervous I'm sweating up a storm." I giggled lightly at the mental picture of my little brother covered in a layer of water, dripping head to toe in moisture. He has a right to be nervous; it's his first day of Jr. High, but me, I have no idea why I should be nervous. It's the first day of eighth grade for me. I should be proud, and anxious, not nervous. I sighed, hit the alarm button so it wouldn't go off, and got out of bed and into the shower. I took a nice long hot shower to help ease my nervousness. I got out and dried off and headed back to my room. I flipped the light on, to bug my little brother, and said "Upsy dupsy" real loud. I fumbled through my dresser drawer, found some socks and pants, and put them on. I grabbed a shirt and put it on, and by this time Ben was just getting out of bed. He takes so long to wake up, even if he's been awake previously. He jumped down, wearing only his whitty-tighties and headed off to the shower. I ate breakfast at the table. Mom walked in. "Good morning honey." "Morning Mom." "You wake Ben?" "Yes." "Ok good. I don't want him to be late on the first day of Jr. High. He's already shy as it is, and doing something to draw attention to himself won't be good." "That's for sure." I thought for a moment. "You want him walking to school with me or taking the bus?" "He can walk to school with you but he needs to take the bus home since you go over to Anthony's house then." "Ok." I continued to eat and read the sports section of the newspaper. I'm not much of a comic-section person, and definitely not a morning person. Even a long hot shower doesn't wake me, but today I'm awake -- fully awake, from my extra amount of anxiety. Benjamin came out a bit perkier then normal. He's excited I can tell. He ate and read the comics. We brushed our teeth hair and did our usual hygiene stuff. As I was putting some deodorant on Benjamin asked "What's that for?" "It's deodorant. It's to keep my smelling fresh all day long, because when you get older, your body will start to make more bad smells. And most of that bad smell comes from your armpits." He looked a bit confused. "Here, put some on" and I handed him the stick. "Just rub it back and forth a few times on each pit." He did as I said. "Ewww, it feels funny." "Give it a few seconds and it'll dry and you won't even notice it. Later in the day, why don't you sniff yourself there and see how minty fresh it is" and I gave him a huge grin. Just then Robert walked in. "Hey dorks, get out so I can shower." Yup, he's a sweet-ole older brother that's for sure. He is just now waking up because he is a lazy bum most of the time. He will catch a ride to school from one of his friends. He is in High School now, attending Langham Creek High School, same place I will next year, but that's so far in the future I don't really care. We left the bathroom, went back into the living room, grabbed our bags and some lunch money and went out the door. On the way to school, Benjamin had lots of questions. "Will, will I get lots of homework?" "Yup." "Even on the weekend?" "Sometimes, yes." "Is it true they have snack bars in Jr. High?" "Yup." "Do you eat at the snack bar?" "Sometimes." "Will you protect me if eighth graders pick on me?" "Of course, but I don't think eighth graders will pick on you. You'll probably get picked on by some sixth grade bullies. In which case, I'll shove them in their locker." Even though that's not physically possible, unless the person is very small, but then he wouldn't be a bully. The lockers at Watkins Jr. High aren't that big -- 3' tall by about a foot and a half wide. We continued to walk. "I'm just glad I don't have gym class yet. I don't want to get naked in front of other people, that's too embarrassing" Benjamin commented. "It's not so bad. The first few weeks, everyone is too busy quickly changing clothes to look at anyone else, and you don't actually ever get naked -- just down to your underwear." I reassured him. "Then after that, you don't really feel embarrassed. Everyone is changing just like you. It's not like everyone is just watching you change." "That's easy for you to say now." He gave a very sarcastic wiggle of the head. "Don't worry about it. You still have another year before that." "I know" he said in a very low tone. I don't think he was much reassured. When we got to the corner of the street, the street where Anthony and I usually met, we stopped and waiting a few minutes -- seeing if he would be coming down the street. We didn't see him, so we continued on to school. Sometimes he just goes right on ahead to the cafeteria and waits for me there. That's what it was. Anthony was waiting for us in the cafeteria. We sat down next to him. "Hey Anthony. We're officially the top dogs now and we run this school." Anthony laughed. "Yup" and we did a sort of quasi-cool handshake. We talked a bit more. Then one of the Assistant Principals walked in and told everyone where to go. The Eighth graders were to meet in assembly in the small gym and the sixth graders were to meet in assembly in the large gym. This is where we'd get our schedules, lockers and homeroom teachers and other essentials for beginning the school year. I was just hopeful that I'd get some classes with Anthony and or Matt. When we got to the gym area, Anthony and I split up from Benjamin. When we got into the small gym we started looking for Matt because by this time, all the kids from the buses were flowing in. It was crowded and noisy; it took us awhile to locate Matt, but we eventually did. We sat next to him in the bleachers. "I hope we get some classes together" Matt said as we sat down. "Yeah, gonna suck if we don't." Then we heard over the loud speaker the Eighth Grade Assistant Principal speak. She went through each teacher calling names of students. The students would follow the teacher back to their classroom. This teacher would be your homeroom teacher and first period of your schedule. I was called first, and neither Matt nor Anthony was called with me for Mrs. Hooper class. As I was leaving I heard Anthony's name called for some other teacher and that's all I heard from that point on. I was in Mrs. Hooper's class in a few minutes. She handed out schedules, locker assignments, some papers for our parents to look over and sign, some code of conduct booklet thingy, and some more worthless announcement stuff. She introduced himself and made some small talk about the school and blah blah. I tuned him out quickly. I looked over my schedule and noticed I had Life Science 2nd period, Gym 3rd, Algebra 4th, Language Arts 5th, Art/Theatre/Music 6th and Woodshop 7th period. Mrs. Hooper was my Texas History teacher which is what I was currently in. I looked around the class, recognized some students as friends from last year. Some I didn't recognize at all, they were either new students, or I just didn't know who they were. One kid caught my eye and I couldn't help but stare. It was one of the kids I didn't recognize. He was sitting on the other side of the class, about middle row, upright in a very properly manners posture. He had short blond hair and wearing a blue shirt and blue shorts. He had on shiny white tennis shoes. I was staring at him because he looked hawt. I couldn't get a good look at his face from my vantage point or good looks at his legs. I'll have to figure out some why to get to know him better. The bell rang and we all filed out. I was looking for Anthony or Matt or anyone I knew to attach to. I just didn't like walking by myself, being by myself doing school stuff by myself. I felt like the only person who wasn't walking or talking with a friend. I found the one thing I wasn't necessarily looking for, 2nd period classroom. I stood around hoping someone would walk by that I could talk to, but no one did. I just walked in and sat down in the back, like normal. Again there was no one there that really knew as a friend, just faces I recognize, and no one really good looking either. The bell rang and I went to gym. This is the class I really cared about. I wanted to see lots of hawt boys, and hopefully one or two that would have lockers next to me, so I get lots of nice good long looks at their half-naked bodies throughout the year. To my great relief, Matt was sitting on the bleachers. That just made my day. I sat down next to him and said "Hey Matt, how's it going?" "Hey. You got gym this class?" "Yup." "Who's your coach?" "Coach Weiss" "That's who I have. Cool." "Let me see your schedule" and he handed it to me. I compared the two and gym was the only class we had in common, but we had another teacher the same, but different periods. That might come in handy some time. "Looks like we'll have lunch together because we both have 8th grade classes 4th period. They do lunch based on what grade you're in, and the only exceptions are elective type classes that have kids from all grades. So that's cool." "Yes. You seen Anthony yet?" "Not since assembly this morning. You?" "No." "I guess we'll see him during lunch, unless he gets stuck in one of the baby lunches." That got us laughing. "I sure hope not" Matt managed to get out between the giggles. Damn he has a nice giggle, and some cute dimples. I can't believe I never really paid attention to those before. The first few days of gym wouldn't be a dress out day. The first day, we'd get our locker assignments and get our gym clothes and go over rules and regulations and crap. It's pretty boring the first few days of gym, usually. But I have Matt here to chit chat with so it's alright. Coach Weiss called his students into the locker room to assign the lockers when one of the other coaches was done. It so happened that the coaches was assigning lockers alphabetically, so I being Cordova and Matt being Ducker, we were practically right next to each other. This was gonna be sweet for sure. I couldn't have asked for a better coincidence. Turns out Anthony did have our lunch period so we all ended up sitting in pretty much the same place as last year, with a few different friends. "Hey Anthony, let me see your schedule, see if we have any classes together" and he handed me his schedule. "Look, we have 5th period Language Arts together with some teacher named Popov." I pronounced it as best as I could. "You know that's gonna suck. It's a foreigner teacher. I can barely stand Language Arts with an English teacher, much less a teacher who won't be able to speak our language." "I noticed that" Anthony replied. Matt broke out laughing. "You called her a foreigner like there's something wrong with that. Remember I'm one of those too." We all giggled at that and we teased Matt briefly for it. "Yea, I couldn't imagine you as my teacher, trying to teach me English while speaking Canadian eh" - around of laughs ensured at the table. Matt fought back with "Well, ya'll ain't able to learned it anyways." He said it in his best redneck accent he could muster up. The light-hearted good-natured chaffing went back and forth for sometime, with Anthony and others chipping in. Lunch was fun. Just like it was last year, and I couldn't help but notice how cute Matt was when he made "other" voices. He sure can be charming. The bell rang and Anthony and I went on our way to Language Arts and Matt his own way to wherever his class was. When we walked into the classroom, I immediately noticed that same boy from 1st period, the blond. I took the initiative and told Anthony where to sit, while I quickly grabbed the seat right behind the new kid. I found this to be my opportunity to maybe make friends with him, or at least just observe him intently. The teacher, Mr. Popov, it turned out, spoke perfect English. He explained how to pronounce his name -- the `v' is pronounced like an `f'. He had explained his parents were Russian immigrants, but he grew up here in the states. So that was a relief, because I don't think I could pass this class between Anthony, a teacher who couldn't speak good English and my new pet project, the new kid. When Mr. Popov took roll, I took notice to the new kid's name -- Ian. Cute name I must say, short and sweet, sort of like how this kid looked. He couldn't have been taller then 5' 2" or weigh any more then 100 pounds that's for sure. I am able to get a much better look at him now, then in History. He's got some nice slender hairless legs, with ankle high socks that seem to compliment his legs, with small firm calves, the perfect size. I don't like the calves that seem to be nonexistent, as if the boy didn't have any muscles at all, and I don't like big fat calves that are overly large. I have big calves, probably from all the walking I do. Ian has probably the most perfect set of calves I've ever laid eyes upon. I can see one of the muscles flex when he moves his legs around. I could lose all consciousness looking at his legs, but instead I just day dreamed the whole class period. I had to talk to this boy somehow. I don't know how I'll initiate it. I suppose I can just say hello and ask him if he's new, befriend him and go from there. He seems very shy, I wonder if he'll even talk back. I suppose he can't talk back unless spoken to first. Then I felt nudging from behind. "Will?...Will? Wake up Will." "Huh?" "Pay attention the teacher is talking to you." Oh crap. "Mr. Cordova, did you hear me?" "Sorry Sir. I zoned out." "Why did you zone out?" Mr. Popov inquired. I couldn't very well tell him I was day dreaming about Ian's legs now could I. So I lied. "Nothing in particular Sir." "Ok, please pay attention from now on; I'm only going to say this once." "Yeah right, you were day dreaming about some girl giving you head" I heard whispered from over my shoulder. It was low enough that only a few of us in this corner heard it. Anthony and a few others tried to hold back from laughing. I heard Ian giving a low giggle too. That was embarrassing. I turned red for sure. I managed to pay attention from then on out to the end of class, which was shortly after. I must have zoned out for quit some time, because the class flew by fast. 6th and 7th periods were uneventful and meaningless to me. I am taking the Art/Theatre/Music elective instead of band, for obvious reasons. I ain't playing any instrument; I'm not a band nerd. Woodshop I am taking because there isn't much else to take in Jr. High. It's that or some foreign language. I have enough trouble with English to begin with. After school we all went over to Anthony's and did the typical first day of school chit-chat. Who has what, with whom. Who's got the most boring teacher, the weirdest, and the ugliest. Who has the hottest girl in their class and stuff like that. All in all, I am pretty happy with my schedule. One class with Anthony; one class with Matt, and lunch with both. And my new schedule has blessed me with a boy of hawt stature in two of my classes. Fourth day of school rolled around and it would be the first day that we have to dress out for gym. Something I was looking forward to since I found out Matt would be undressing right next to me. We entered the locker room together. "Hey." "Hey." I replied. We proceeded to open our lockers and change. I kept an eye on him, sort peripheral vision. He took his shoes off first, as did I. He stood up took his shirt and pants off at the same time. He's not shy. I change shirt then change pants, not both at the same time -- I'm too shy. Matt just struts around in socks and boxers as if he's alone in his bathroom. I keep my eye on him though. He even takes his time putting on his gym clothes. He sits back down and fools with his watch and necklace. Then he stands up, yawns and stretches. Yawns and stretches? He looks over at me, catching me in my surveillance mode. I blush a bit, but I don't look away. He doesn't seem bothered about it one bit. He gives me a soft smile and his eyes show something I've never seen before. I can't explain it. It's like his eyes have become as soft as his smile. He instinctively scratches and adjusts himself while we're watching each others eyes. He breaks the connection. I call it a connection because at that moment I felt very differently toward Matt, and his eyes gave in to me. I felt like his eyes were making some kind of connection to me. Like I said, I can't explain it. He grabs his gym clothes and puts them on; then sits and ties his shoes back on. We did a few laps around the gym and had a free day. Friday's are always free days in gym. There are usually a few pick-up games of b-ball on each hoop. Since we're the top dogs, we get the game going and the 7th graders are stuck being picked or not, or sitting around talking. I picked Matt despite his low-quality skills compared to many others. I want Matt to feel involved and not like a stinking 7th grader. He's getting better anyways. Anyways, as team captain, which I feel I'll get to be for most of the year, I decided my team would be skins. I'll keep that a trend all year long; anything to see Matt shirtless. The game went well, score really isn't kept. I don't care about the score anyways; I'm more interested in just seeing the boys. Back in the locker room, we were a bit more pumped up. "That was awesome, you see that shot I made. It bounced on the rim like 6 times!" I was enthusiastic. "Yeah, that was sweet." "You didn't do so bad yourself. You made two shots I distinctly remember." "Yeah right. I didn't even break a sweat. I couldn't have done that good. No one passes me the ball." "No one ever breaks a sweat. No one moves enough and no one passes you the ball besides me because they don't know how good you really are." I was trying to make him feel better at this time. I knew he wasn't that good and I knew the other kids knew. But I didn't care. I was gonna pick Matt despite it. I was gonna let him have fun whether he was good or not. "If you practice enough with me and Anthony, by the end of the year you'll be as good as anyone out there." The change back into our regular clothes was much the same. Matt was his same flamboyant self. I, however, didn't watch him really. I was too pumped up on the fading adrenalin in my system. I was too overheated to be any state of awe. Gym was the same most every day. We'd change, and I'd occasionally make eye contact, but I never felt that same connection. Maybe it is because I became much more aware of the state of risk I was putting myself in. We talked like two normal boys, but that was it. Neither of us, nor anyone for that matter, ever showered. Not only was there never a reason, everyone was way too shy to attempt such a feat -- even for Matt. Unlike gym, Language Arts wasn't going as good. It's been two weeks and I haven't attempted to communicate with Ian yet -- a lot of gazing, but no verbal contact. That changed in class one day when Mr. Popov gave us a group assignment. Normally this would mean me and Anthony paired up, but he was asking for groups of three, and Ian was the odd man out. Mr. Popov told Ian to join us. That started it out. The assignment was just some grammar problems. Nothing too difficult, but I suppose the teacher thought it'd be nice to get some group work in. He had mentioned he like letting student work in groups, so that students can help each other with problem. I suppose this will be the start of that. "Hey Ian" we said in sync. He didn't reply. "Ian?" I asked. "Yes?" he said in a very low voice. "Nothing, just wondering if you actually spoke. You never say anything in class." "I don't have anything to say" he said. This was the first time I really got a good long look at his face. Very nice -- soft skin, blue eyes complimenting the blond hair, small petite nose. And the most astonishing thing was his very young look. I swear he can't be older then 10! This would have to be solved in my mind for me to rest on this. It would bug me not knowing. "Well, we have an assignment to do; now you have a reason to speak." He smiled lightly. "I guess so." Before I could get any further, Anthony saved me. "You seem awfully young to be in the eighth grade. How old are you?" "Eleven." "And you're in the eighth grade?" "Yes." "How come? Are you some kind of genius?" Anthony questioned. "No" he giggled a bit. "Then how are you in the eighth grade?" "I skipped 2nd grade." "Funny, that's the grade I did twice" and Anthony and I busted out laughing. All that came from Ian was a little giggle. He was shy that's for sure. We worked on the assignment, making light talk. I noticed he seemed to be opening up a bit more, so I took advantage of that. "I don't remember seeing you around last year. Are you knew?" "Yes." "Where'd you move from?" "Truitt." "Oh" was all I said. Truitt was a rival Jr. High School in the district. "Where you live now?" This is like pulling teeth. All I was getting was one or two word answers. This discussion kept going on while our work on the assignment continued. "Glencarin. "Ok. What street?" "Royal Mile." A bell went off in my head. "Royal Mile?" He just nodded in the affirmative. "Wait a second. You live two houses down from Greenglen in the Blue house?" His eyes light up like I was right. "How'd you know that?" I didn't think of it the time, but I remember someone moving in on that house over the summer. The house is directly behind my house, so technically we're neighbors, but more like backyard neighbors. We only share a backyard fence. It's not like it's the typical neighbor you talk to or get to know. "I live right behind you on the other street." "Oh cool" he blurted out as he looked up at me. That was the first sign of any sort of emotion he showed. Some enthusiasm in his voice was a relief. "We've been living right next to each other for months and never even knew it." I laughed. "We'll have to hang out sometime." "Yea, I suppose." Class was over before we knew it. We went our separate ways and Language Arts become a bit more bearable. Mr. Popov kept to his word about the group assignments. We had another one before the week was even up. We had no problem taking Ian in our group without any assistance from Mr. Popov. I found it quite alright to be friends with such a young person. Our age didn't seem to be a factor at all. I over heard in school, and in rumors occasionally, that it was weird -- his age -- my age, as if it meant something. I knew I wanted to befriend him since the first day I saw him in Language Arts, why would that change now that I knew he was only 11. He was in my grade, taking the same classes, doing the same work, making the same grades even. He was bright, but definitely not a genius. He appeared to be more mature then the average 11 year old. Our group's regular routine kept solid. Matt and I would accompany Anthony to his house after school for play time. Matt's mom would pick him up on the way home from work around four-thirty to five. Occasionally Matt would go straight home after school -- same with me. On the weekends though, we didn't do anything together on a regular basis. The weekends were our own time, family time I suppose. This is the time I would take the opportunity to go visit Ian sometime or maybe just hop the fence. ***************************************************************************** Questions and/or Comments? wcordova98@yahoo.com New Chapters every weekend
