Chapter 2

A DAY AT THE TRACKS

We made it home in good stead, with my dad blasting QUEEN all the way there. During my recess of becoming the next QUEEN replica, my dad and I had a very good conversation. He wanted to know how I met Kyle, and I explained that he was struggling a bit with IT class and that was enough said. I could not help thinking about what the afternoon was to be, imagine, taking corners at break neck speeds, even though it's just a go-kart, its one with some serious power.

When I arrived home, mum was her cheerful self, I sometimes wonder how someone can be so cheerful All The Time, but don't get me wrong, tick her off, and you'll be surprised at how this charming lady turns maniac.

She greeted me as I walked through the door and I kissed her on her cheek, and then started to run up to my room, but was stopped dead in my tracks when I heard her stern voice.

LAWRENCE STEVEN BLACK, YOU GET BACK HERE THIS INSTANT!! Mum said.

Yes mum, I replied, what seems to be the bother? I tried it in my best British accent which sucked big time. I could see she wasn't angry which let me know immediately I wasn't in the dog box.

Son, you haven't kissed me on the cheek in a long time, so either you have a fever of note or something happened at school, so spill Sweet Cheeks, mum said. (Reference To My Dimples)

Mummmmmm, you know I hate that name, dad can fill you in, cause I need you get changed as in like right now, but I promise it's all good, and I've invited someone over for the afternoon, if its ok with you.

Sure honey, now run along before you late, I'll find out from your dad, what's gotten you so worked up, mum said.

I left the grown-ups to do what they do best, and that's talk. Hahaha, while I got changed.
I didn't want to waste time, so I immediately stepped into my racing overalls and headed down to the living room. (I'll take you guys on a tour of the place later)

Dad was already waiting for me and we left in the Nissan Skyline GTR R35. For some odd reason, dad always has these incredibly powerful machines, but never uses them to their full capacity. He says that I'm doing it for the both of us, go figure...

As we approached Kyle's house, he was already standing outside, he hopped in and we jetted off towards the track.

When he saw what I was dressed in he whistled saying:

The unlawful is ready for his fuel filled day of burning rubber and smoking tyres.
ALL HAIL LAWLESS!!

He said that with so much vigour and punching his arm in the air, it caused a chuckle from both me and my dad.
I don't know what it is about Kyle, but he has this ability about him. I've known for what? A few hours? And yet it seemed like we've been best buds for ages. Even my dad likes him, and he doesn't warm this quickly to any of my friends.

As always, QUEEN was blasting, I was the happiest kid in the world and Kyle was chatting away, he was telling me how his dad thought it was cool that I was helping him, how quickly we've taken to each other as friends, and says that I will be a good and positive influence in his circle of friends.

We chatted for the entire hour it took us to get to the track, we had so much in common, I was wondering why we never bumped into each other before.

When we arrived at the track, I gave him the full tour.

I introduced him first to my team mate Jason, my Coach / Team Manager Mr Charles and a few of the mechanics.
Then I took him to see my Crown Jewel, she was Black, Silver and Red with a number 10 posted in front. Damn She Was Fast.

He was no doubt impressed with my ride and had his signature look, you know, that dorky one, with his mouth open, just waiting to catch a fly. Hahaha
He said he always thought that go karts were just a skeleton of metal with a small seat that didn't go faster than 10 miles per hour, but boy was he mistaken with LADYFROST, yeah, that's my nick name for my 114 mile an hour beast.

Just so you guys don't think I'm making this stuff up, let me give you some stats on LADYFROST.
?     She has a 2.2 stroke engine
?     Bore of 2.6875/2.6885
?     Displacement of 206
?     Compression ratio of 9.5 to 1
Any petrol head worth his salt knows that with a little bit of tuning, she will go that fast and even Kyle wasn't completely convinced about her sheer power up until he saw her stats for himself.

Hey, he said, would it be possible to go for a spin in that beast of yours?

Unfortunately dude, it's a one seater I replied, but I'll take you out later on the Track Day Kart, that one has 2 seats, she's not as fast, but she still packs a punch.

Cool he said!! Here comes Unlawful and his trusted side kick!!

He was such a pleasure to be around, all the guys in the workshop started to crack up at his antics.

Even coach didn't have a problem when I asked him if I could use the Track Day Kart to show Kyle around.

Jason my team mate was also enjoying the company of Kyle. We might be team mates and opponents on the track, but Jason is 1 guy I regard as a true mate.

His 13 years old, long auburn hair that's always fixed in a ponytail, and he has the perfect skin, I don't even think he needs to tan, cause he wears that tan all year round. He is of normal height for his age and athletically built.

Normally before I go out on track, I have something called: "My Time Out". Its where I take 10 minutes and just talk to LADYFROST get to know how she's doing, telling her to behave on track, and not kick me like a wild horse.
But today, being in the company of a good friend, I couldn't just side-line him from my ritual.

I pulled him beside LADYFROST and kind of explained what I was going to do. What took me by surprise was he didn't even laugh at me the whole time I spoke to LADYFROST, and he was as silent as a mouse just observing what I was doing.

When I was done, I looked straight into those emerald eyes of his. At that point I respected him even more and it was as if I was lost in his eyes. I could see that he respected what I did, and nothing had to be said between us, I smiled at him, and he gave me a nod. I think that since I brought him into the garage that was the only time he was dormant, so to speak.

When coach saw me include Kyle into my pre – launch ritual, he turned to my dad and said.

"That is the first time his ever allowed someone to be with him, when his doing that" "I had the misfortune of speaking to him one day, and he almost bit my head off"

He just met that kid today in school, my dad said, but I think they gonna be very good friends, they already as thick as thieves.

Now Law, we are testing a new component for the next race in 2 weeks' time, take her out on track for a few laps just to warm her up, when I signal you over the radio, stretch her legs and see how she handles, both you and Jason are doing testing for the same component, but will be testing different aspects my coach said.

Yes coach, I replied and started making my way down the pit lane. If I can describe our track, its similar to the Chinese Grand Prix Circuit with a long straight, has similar turns but has one very unique outline, it has a signature long left and right bend, named the: Devil's Advocate which you can take at high speed but if you navigate those corners wrong, you will be in a world of hurt.

I don't know how, but somehow Kyle managed to get his hands on a set of earphones and was chatting away as I was making my way down the pit lane.

Damn, that boy can talk; I sometimes think he would even speak in his sleep if he could.

I was going along at a leisurely pace as instructed by coach, now any driver knows, that if you have someone yapping in your ear constantly, while you are trying to concentrate, that could be very annoying and distracting and could have dire consequences, but with Kyle it was the complete opposite.

It was like having those soft water sounds playing in the back ground when you can't sleep, his voice had a soothing element to it, and even though I wasn't racing at full speed, my times started increasing, shaving a few tenths here and there.

Jason, probably thought he didn't get the memo to up his times and speed, and I pulled away from him, but pretty soon we were racing wheel to wheel.

As coach was seeing this and reading the telemetry was that coming back to the garage, he was satisfied and didn't mind me upping the pace, but did ask Kyle to stop talking.

The moment Kyle stopped talking, my times started dropping again, which I didn't know because coach never said anything, but I felt this void and started a conversation again with him. Instantly I received feedback that my times are improving here and there and that I shaved a few tenths off my lap time.

Both Jason and I were called in for a pit stop to re-fuel and for a change of tyres.

As we entered the pit box, Kyle was at it again.
?     The Unlawful Returns
?     The Speed Demon Hard At Work
?     Don't Break The Law, You'll Be Crucified
?     The Lawless Vs. The Devil's Advocate – The Saga Continues
Everyone was cracking themselves up, even the mechanics forgot to re-fuel the karts and change the tyres so hard they were laughing, but were soon called to order by coach.
He was almost standing right beside me in the pit box, he just looked at me, I was staring into his Emerald Eyes and it was almost as if he was saying "Go Get Them And Hit The Track Hard"
I don't know if that was what he was thinking, but he had this determination in his eyes.

I left the pit box with Jason in tow and coach radioed that they had sufficient data to assume that the component installed was working at the prescribed loads, but wanted us to put it under severe strain for the next 20 laps, meaning racing is a green light.

It was tough, but I just had the legs on Jason, and on lap 19 he tried to outbreak me at the Devil's Advocate, we touched and the unthinkable happened.

He smacked me at the Devil's Advocate; I think I was doing between 90 – 95 mph. I started swerving ridiculously on the track, spinning in all directions and I could see the barrier coming ever so close.
As I was bracing myself for the inevitable crash, I heard a soft voice over the radio.

"Keep It Together, You Spoke To Her, Tell Her What To Do And She'll Listen, Just Don't Be To Erratic, Straighten Her Out When She's Ready"

I don't know how, but with the Grace Of God, Good Timing, and Good Driving Skills I managed to avoid the barrier. I came to a dead stop millimetres from the barrier.

I was breathing heavily, but managed to keep the engine running, I cruised back to the pits thinking about my almost career ender I had and the Angel's Voice that saved me.

When I reached the garage, I jumped out of the kart, Kyle was still asking me if I was ok, but I immediately hugged him as tightly as I could. I mouthed the words Thank You to him. I think we stayed like that for a good 5 minutes before I felt my dad's hand on my shoulder.

I left the embrace of my friend and turned to my dad. I saw coach was also standing beside him.

You ok sweet cheeks? That was 1 hell of a scare, he said.

He knew I hated being called that, but I think he wanted to add some humour to a situation that was otherwise very tense.
Luckily, the only people that heard were Kyle and coach, as they were in the immediate vicinity.

I'm ok dad, thanks to Kyle, I said.

For 30 minutes, myself and Kyle were talking in the chill room, I can't even remember what was said, but as you can guess, it was Kyle doing all the talking. We had a driver's briefing shortly after, and Jason got an ear full from coach. I even had to interject, because the way coach was ripping poor Jason, was definitely not cool.

Coach, I know Jason, we've been racing together for 2 years, and even though he races hard, he is fair. What happened today was purely a racing incident; he braked too late and couldn't get out of the bend without crashing himself. He would never do something like that deliberately, I said.

Coach saw reason and that was the end of it. He showed us our telemetry from the testing, and to say it was positive, would be an understatement. We so whipping ass in 2 weeks' time at the Grand Prix.

My dad's firm does all our software updates and electronic components on the karts, and they've come up with a jewel of an update.

I left the briefing to find Kyle in the garage, chatting to a few mechanics, but something was off, he wasn't as animated as before.

Hey EM, I said. Let's get your ass down the track.

You still wanna go out after that? He replied

Yeah dude, I was a little shaken, but I'm not stirred, I'm good; I replied.

We jumped into the 2 seater, put on our helmets, and made our way down the pit lane.

He was silent for the 1st lap we did, I didn't go at pace because I wanted to find out what was wrong, then it struck me... THE HUG!!!

No 2 twelve year old boys should be hugging for that long...
I started to think about how I was going to explain myself, but talking is not my strong suit. I don't have that on lockdown the way Kyle has it, I normally just say what I'm thinking (for the most part). I decided to bite the bullet and I just blurted it out.

Dude, I'm sorry for making you uncomfortable when I hugged you, I said.

Still, I didn't get a reaction from him.

Kyle. I'm sorry, I'd understand if you don't wanna be friends anymore.

With that said, he turned to me, I looked straight into those emerald eyes, and it had a soft feature to it. I immediately stopped the kart on track.

It's not that, he said. When you hugged me, all I could think of was that you are safe. I was experiencing so many emotions, thankfulness for your safety being one of them. We may have only known each other for a day, but I already regard you as my best friend. I just don't want anything to happen to you. I know racing can be dangerous, but I just want you to be safe.

I looked into his emerald eyes the entire time he was speaking, and I could tell that, that revelation he just made was sincere and came from the heart and I even saw a tear drop.
I felt the exact same way about him, he was my best friend and I knew it right there.

I told him that from this day forth, he is my best friend and will be a prevalent figure in my life. That promise is one I knew that would not have a problem keeping.

To lighten the mood, I said: "Dry Your Eyes Lucky Charms"!! You About To Go On The Ride Of Your Life!!

I jetted off at full power, with Kyle screaming his lungs out. The Track Day Kart may not be as pumped as LADYFROST, but she's no slouch either. I probably did about 15 laps at full speed around the track, and for those 24 minutes or less; he felt what it is to be a racing driver.

When we got back to the garage, he was back to his old self again, yapping away in animation.

I asked my dad if it was ok for Jason to spend the day tomorrow, as it would be Saturday and that would give Jason and Kyle time to get to know each other.

My dad said yes, obviously, and I went to ask Jason if he wanted to come over the next day.
When I got to his side of the garage, he was just sitting there, staring into space. He was probably feeling bad about the incident earlier, but I told him to bury it into the back of his mind and I extended the invite.

He gladly accepted and I told him I would see him tomorrow, as we had to head off home.

I thanked coach and said goodbye to the guys in the garage and we started to make our way to our ride.

As always, the order of the trip home was QUEEN, although I didn't engage in the vocal arts this time.

As dad was driving, and this time he was the one singing a very bad rendition of "Another One Bites The Dust"

Kyle was cracking himself at my dad, I turned to him, staring into those beautiful emerald eyes and I asked: "You Wanna Spend The Night Lucky Charms"?
He finally picked up on my new nickname for him and asked:

"Why Lucky Charms Though"?

To which I replied, say Yes and I'll tell you when we get home.

Let's sweeten the deal he said, include "Sweet Cheeks" and I'll say YES.

That's The End Of Chapter 2 Guys.
It Was A Little Longer As You Guys Requested, But Not By Much.
As The Chapters Progress In The Future, It Will Lengthen.
I Promise!!
