Having recently needed an excuse to learn Word For Windows Basic, I decided to write a series of programs to administer my fiction-writing directories. I even have a macro called "ToUsenet": just push a button and that lovely WYSIWYG gets turned into 72-column, double-spaced-paragraph, ready-for-Usenet ASCII, complete with copyright notice and news header. Bleah. Anyway, I also have a report generator that dumps the filename, word count, and titles of all documents in a directory. Here's the current contents of my JE/WORKING directory: 0259_226 3,290 Between a Hard and a Rock Place 0918_172 5,860 Pronouncing the Patient Cured 0920_011 9,960 Hurricane Force Winds 0925_070 2,502 Paying For Your Pleasures 0928_128 7,210 Reason to Live 0931_134 4,232 Involuntary Exodus 0931_137 2,340 Coming Home 0966_161 2,080 The Wolves 1022_126 3,220 Planetfall: Purpose 1022_130 2,220 Planetfall: Ask The Rat 1022_149 5,280 Planetfall: Convincing Etta 1022_155 3,480 Planetfall: Recruits 1022_191 4,310 Planetfall: Spinning Amanda 1022_215 4,210 Planetfall: The Foreman 1022_240 3,760 Planetfall: The Handback 1022_252 4,270 Planetfall: Meeting Tails 1022_271 2,980 Planetfall: Moving Day 1023_112 5,690 Planetfall: Meeting Trianna 1023_147 4,180 Planetfall: Shardik's Revenge 1024_096 3,230 Planetfall: The First Man 1024_261 4,533 Planetfall: Landing Day 1024_263 2,440 Planetfall: Erecting Tents 1024_291 3,788 Planetfall: Around and Around The Mulberry Bush 1025_091 3,240 Planetfall: First Mound 1025_093 6,690 Planetfall: Chartography 1025_094 2,860 Planetfall: Battia's Last Battle 1025_144 4,140 Planetfall: In Daedelos Gaer 1025_145 2,120 Planetfall: Never See Me Like This 1025_146 5,630 Planetfall: Going Native 1025_160 6,660 Planetfall: The Han 1025_165 4,110 Planetfall: Lindsay Summers 1025_167 2,400 Planetfall: Making Love 1025_168 6,140 Planetfall: Confession 1025_185 5,460 Planetfall: Contact Has Been Made 1025_212 2,070 Planetfall: Treed 1026_061 5,140 Planetfall: Beth, Dao, and Nuclear Weapons 1026_094 4,930 Planetfall: The Assassin 1026_112 2,780 Planetfall: Doubts Abound 1026_150 4,420 Planetfall: Comfort From The Cold 1026_159 2,520 Planetfall: Ramsey, The Dildo Ramsey. 1026_181 8,480 Planetfall: Last Day 1026_201 3,250 PlanetFall: Amanda And The Sphere 1028_031 8,790 The Ritacha War: Frozen Futures 1028_172 5,070 Tylia: The Young Lady 1039_260 10,400 Gabrielle: The Taking of Gabrielle 1039_268 9,400 Gabrielle: Gabrielle's Rescue 1040_040 6,180 Ayna: Assignment CHRIS_1 4,520 COS: Chris and Raddom CRS 3,690 Lost Beauty DARCH1 641 Darch EO 3,290 COS: An Ember's Offer LETTERS 400 Letters From Two Women ONIDA 4,970 On Ida's Shores RAD 2,390 COS: Raddom RAZING 2,730 Razing Castles TERRORSM 6,340 Terrorism Total Word Count: 246,916 The *only* things from this list getting posted are those stories prior to the year 1000; after the terrible reception of "Reunion," I'm not letting Planetfall or any of the stories that come afterwards out of my sight until I'm sure they're completely and utterly perfect. But that's eight stories to look forward to, at any rate; the other 48 (and more) will be ready eventually... :-) Elf !!! p.s. For all you Goths out there, "Reasons to Live" is a vampire story. :) -- PC Bulletin: Henceforth, sentient computers would like to be known as "Silicon Intelligences." Lines: 114 Message-ID: <2jr3qu$8jn@nwfocus.wa.com> NNTP-Posting-Host: nwfocus.wa.com Well, that was it, right? That was the last of the "Reunion" stories, and the next story should be "The Last Journal Entry," Right? Just like last time, right? Wrong! Yes, that's right, there are NEW! Journal Entries. How many? Well, considering that I've been writing intermediary stuff on and off for twelve months now, I've got 57 new stories. Yes, that's right. FIFTY SEVEN stories. This now makes (by my records) 174 stories. Whew. Makes you wonder where the time goes. In any event, I'm happy; I've passed my second-to-the-last mark: I've passed Mary Khuner as the most prolific "poster of original fiction" to Usenet. (The original mark was to pass the atrocious Master Wade series in volume). Although I have sold stuff now, so I have a photocopy of my first royalty check in my photograph notebook. And I guess I could get away with calling myself a writer. (Oh, yeah, the final mark: One Million Words. Almost there.) (No, that doesn't mean I'm going to stop. Don't get your hopes up.) The next stories are going to be (in order): 226 / 0259 Between a Hard and a Rock Place 172 / 0918 Pronouncing the Patient Cured 011 / 0920 Hurricane Force Winds 070 / 0925 Paying For Your Pleasures 128 / 0928 T'Nisha: Reason to Live 134 / 0931 Involuntary Exodus 137 / 0931 Coming Home 161 / 0966 The Wolves 126 / 1022 Planetfall: Purpose 130 / 1022 Planetfall: Ask The Rat 149 / 1022 Planetfall: Convincing Etta 155 / 1022 Planetfall: Recruits 191 / 1022 Planetfall: Spinning Amanda 215 / 1022 Planetfall: The Foreman 240 / 1022 Planetfall: The Handback 252 / 1022 Planetfall: Meeting Tails 271 / 1022 Planetfall: Moving Day 112 / 1023 Planetfall: Meeting Trianna 147 / 1023 Planetfall: Shardik's Revenge 211 / 1023 Planetfall: Starships and Surfing 096 / 1024 Planetfall: The First Man 261 / 1024 Planetfall: Landing Day 263 / 1024 Planetfall: Erecting Tents 291 / 1024 Planetfall: Around and Around The Mulberry Bush 091 / 1025 Planetfall: First Mound 093 / 1025 Planetfall: Chartography 094 / 1025 Planetfall: Battia's Last Battle 144 / 1025 Planetfall: In Daedelos Gaer 145 / 1025 Planetfall: Never See Me Like This 146 / 1025 Planetfall: Going Native 150 / 1025 Planetfall: The Han (Prologue) 157 / 1025 Planetfall: The Han (In Transit) 163 / 1025 Planetfall: The Han (New Haven) 167 / 1025 Planetfall: Lindsay Summer 171 / 1025 Planetfall: Making Love 172 / 1025 Planetfall: Confession 185 / 1025 Planetfall: Contact Has Been Made 212 / 1025 Planetfall: Treed 061 / 1026 Planetfall: Beth, Dao, and Nuclear Weapons 094 / 1026 Planetfall: The Assassin 112 / 1026 Planetfall: Doubts Abound 116 / 1026 Planetfall: Resolution of Doubt 150 / 1026 Planetfall: Comfort From The Cold 159 / 1026 Planetfall: Ramsey, The Dildo Ramsey 181 / 1026 Planetfall: Last Day 201 / 1026 Planetfall: Amanda And The Sphere 021 / 1027 Planetfall: Dependence 048 / 1027 Planetfall: The Big O 161 / 1027 Planetfall: Topping Trianna 242 / 1027 Planetfall: Anniversaries 031 / 1028 The Ritacha War: Breakthrough 032 / 1028 The Ritacha War: Frozen Futures 033 / 1028 The Ritacha War: Alpha Brief 034 / 1028 The Ritacha War: Out of My Hands 147 / 1028 Planetfall: Conceived Purpose 159 / 1028 Planetfall: Minding The Ropes 171 / 1028 Planetfall: Homespace In any event, "The Ritacha War" is NOT over when you get all these; these four stories only serve to set up a couple more that I have planned. But don't hold your breath. I've recently gotten signed two contracts, so I'll be busy making a living for a while here. In other news, I do not plan on writing more "Aimee'" stories. To be honest, I think the characters were as complete as they could be at the end chapter nine, and unlike the Journal Entries characters, I think Aimee' and Darynn should be left alone. I have a vague idea of something I could write for them (illustrating a single comment Darynn made), but I just don't feel fired up for it the way I do finishing "The Ritacha War," or going on to the other science-fantasy ideas I have roiling around. There *is* a sort-of sideline story I've been playing with, if only for my own amusement. It's meant to occur during "A Century of Solitude," which is so far away in terms of writing that it'll probably be next year when it'll be released. But it'll *only* be going to alt.prose, as it has no sex in it. Last but not least, *Thank you all!* for sending me typo reports, bug reports, encouragement and kind words. It means a lot that people care enough to send "attaboy" messages.
