I've seated everyone that was on the waiting list so these few moments of peace and not doing anything should be a relief. But it's not. There's an awkward silence between myself and our other hostess, Marissa. I clear my throat and excuse myself to the bathroom. I step up to the sink and look at myself in the mirror. Not bad, not at all bad. My blonde hair's a little messy but it's pulled up and supposed to be like that. I didn't wear any makeup today, but I didn't really need it, I'm not broke out at all. I've liked Marissa ever since I started working at Joe's Crab Shack, even before I really knew her and I always try to look my best when she's around, even if she is straight. I can't help but hope to impress her somewhat. I get a final overview and am satisfied with the end product. I take a deep breath and walk back out to my post. Marissa isn't there, she must be seating another couple. I sit down at the hostess stand and see a little note on a drink napkin. Cute. "Hey Lisa, I stepped in back for a smoke, there probably won't be anyone coming in for a while. Join me if you like. Marissa" I take a quick look out the front doors and see no signs of any new costumers. Grabbing my purse and jacket, I run back to the break room. No ones there when I walk in except her and with the dim lights (a product of cheap owners) she looks gorgeous. It's colder than a meat locker in here and I'm not surprised to see the freezer room door wide open across the hall. I go and shut it before I sit down on an icy folding chair. Lord it's cold in here. I can see our breath hanging in the air with each exhale. Marissa's arms have goosebumps and she smiles as she rubs them for warmth. I look down at my jacket in my hands, look back at her cold form and give it to her. "Are you sure you're not gonna need that yourself?" She asks. When I just shake my head no (I'd give her a kidney if she needed it) she reaches over for it and thanks me. Our hands brush against one another for a millisecond and I immediately shiver from the electricity of that touch. She doesn't notice this, and even if she did, it's cold as balls in this room so I'd have a reason for it. "So..." I mumble as I light my cigarette and look around, "that's some weather we're having." Shitty choice of words, but it's a start. "Yea, but at least we're not busy tonight. I don't think I could stand another two~hour wait night. God, people are so pissy then." She says. More than she's ever said to me in one sentence before. She finishes her cigarette and says she'll be right back then walks out. I carefully watch as she exits, making sure I see her, but she doesn't see me peeking. I slump back in my chair and take a long drag off my Camel. "What I wouldn't give to have her..." I think out loud and am shocked as she walks in and says "Have who?" I think quick. "No, have her hair. Jori I mean. She has perfect hair." I manage to stutter. "No, don't think that. I love your hair, and if you ever change it I'll kill you." She jokes at me. Not even realizing it I run my hand through my hand through my hair. I didn't think she noticed things like that. "Really? I mean, you think so? It's really messy today so I just threw it up. Ya know, come to think of it, I always wear it up when I'm working." I think out loud again. 'I have to learn to control my mouth' I think, silently this time. "Well, it suits you when it's up, but I bet it's really beautiful when it's down. Lemme see." She says as she comes around behind me. I feel her hands on my head even before they touch it. Marissa pulls my hair from the holder and fluffs it as it spills past my shoulders then walks in front of me and does the same. I sit there awe struck, my whole body tingling. "There," She states. "Like I said, beautiful." She looks into my eyes for what seems like forever, but is probably only a couple of seconds, before Todd, our manager, walks in and tells us to get up to the hostess stand or we'll both be fired. As we trek it up to the front, I catch her stealing glances at me and just smile. This could be the start of a wonderful relationship if I play my cards right.
