Raven jerked up, "WHAT THE FUCK?!" "ABSORBENT AND YELLOW AND POROUS IS HE...." "It's Spongebob Squarepants," Bonnie answered. "WHAT THE FUCK IS SMUDGEJOB SCAREPANTS?!" "Spongebob Squarepants," Bonnie corrected her. "I don't give a fuck! Turn that shit off!" Bonnie ignored her as Raven groaned and turned her head at Kala's laughter, "What are you laughing at?!" "You." Seeing Jennie's fearful look at Raven, Kala told her, "Just ignore her." "What time is it?!" Raven looked at her phone. 6:32 AM. Muttering under her breath, Raven got up to use the bathroom. When she came back, she laid down again, watching the show absentmindedly. After several minutes, she asked Bonnie, "If they're living underwater, then how come they're able to use a stove?" "They just can." "But you can't use a stove underwater." "Raven, it's just a cartoon," Kala reminded her. "But it doesn't make sense. You shouldn't be able to use a stove underwater." Raven tried to sit through the inanities of the show, but after a few minutes, Raven couldn't contain herself anymore, "Now they got a bathtub of water! This is too fucking stupid!" "That's just the way it is," Bonnie told her. "You want your cartoons to be realistic?," Kala asked sarcastically. "I don't want them to be stupid. I draw the line at campfires and bathtubs of water at the bottom of the ocean." She got up, "This is too much for me. I'm going to pick up some breakfast somewhere." She got dressed and left. Kala peeked out the window, "It looks nice out there." Pulling her clothes on, she asked, "Jennie, do you wanna go for a walk before we leave?" Jennie jumped up excitedly and began getting dressed. "Wanna come, Bonnie?" "Nah." "Okay, we'll be back in a little bit. I'm taking the key. Don't forget to let Raven in when she comes back." Kala and Jennie opened the door, flooding the room with light, then walked out, closing the door behind them. It wasn't a few minutes later that Bonnie heard a knock on the door. Getting up, she went over to open the door for Raven. As she pulled it opened, it slammed opened to reveal the hard faces of Jadis and Diamond as they shoved her inside, causing her to fall over on the floor. Closing the door behind them, Jadis leered down at her, "Did you really think that I wouldn't be able to find you?" ***** Along a trail in the woods, Kala and Jennie walked hand in hand. The sun felt warm on their skin. Bending over to pick up a flower alongside the trail, Jennie held it out to Kala, sporting her trademark bashful smile. Kala took it and kneeled down, quickly looking to see if they were alone before planting a kiss on Jennie's lips. ***** "That'll be $21.47." Raven pulled out her wallet, fished out a twenty and a five, and handed them to the clerk. The clerk handed her four empty cups to fill at the drink machine, then opened her cash register and began counting out her change. ***** Her eyes wide-opened in fear, Bonnie scrambled away only to be violently pulled back. "That you had gotten away?! No one escapes me!" Thrown over onto her back, Bonnie stared up at them from the floor as Jadis reached down and closed her hand around Bonnie's throat. Bonnie grasped onto Jadis' hands, desperately trying to pull them off her throat as she struggled to breathe. ***** "We should probably head back." Jennie grinned up at Kala, "Race you." Without waiting for an answer, Jennie took off. Kala smiled at her with love, then ran after her. ***** Raven held the cup against the Mountain Dew lever, and waited as the cup slowly filled. She didn't know what Kala or Jennie wanted. When Bonnie's Mountain Dew finished, she held one cup under the Coke nozzle and the other cup under the Pepsi nozzle. They were just going to have to make do with Coke and Pepsi. ***** "Where's my money?!" Bonnie gasped for breath, "I...don't...know..." Jadis pulled out a knife, bringing it to within inches of Bonnie's face, "Where's Raven and Kala?" "Ra...ven...went...for...break...fast...Kala...went...for...walk..." Diamond picked up the two duffle bags, "Found it." "Now we wait for them." ***** Jennie ran as fast as she could, giggling the whole time from the exhilaration of being chased. Kala was leisurely jogging behind her, admiring how adorable she looked. Suddenly, her eyes widened as she quickly sprinted up to Jennie, grabbed her and pulled her behind a tree. "Jennie...Sshhh...Don't make a sound." She pulled out her Glock, "I want you to stay right here behind this tree. Don't move from it. Understand?" Jennie nodded fearfully. "I need to go back to the motel by myself. You might hear some noises, but I want you to stay right here and don't come out, okay?" Jennie's lips quivered as if she were going to cry. "I'll be back soon. I love you." She kissed Jennie, then crouched over, Kala crept deeper into the woods, looking back once at Jennie to make sure she stayed put. Kala ran over to the café as Raven was stepping out, her hands full with the bags of food. "Jadis is here!" Dropping the food, Raven pulled out her Glock, but Kala blocked her, "You can't just go charging in. That's what they're expecting us to do." "How many are there?" "I counted four bikes." Running into the woods on the other side of the street facing the motel, they spied out the area. "There's Rayne and Ash. I don't see anyone else. Jadis and Diamond must be inside with Bonnie." "I know Ash. She wouldn't turn so readily against us," Raven said, "All she knows is what Jadis told her. I'm going to text her." "Are you crazy?! How do you know she won't turn us in?!" "She won't." "You willing to bet Bonnie's life on that?" Raven pulled out her phone, "Yes." As Raven and Kala watched from their concealed position across the street, Ash pulled her phone from her pocket, then glancing over at Rayne, she casually walked across the street and took a few steps into the woods. "Raven? You there?," she called quietly. "Ash, over here," Raven called out just as quietly. Upon seeing them, Ash's eyes widened, "Shit, Raven! You really are here!," then her voice became angry, "What the fuck you been doing?! You went rogue on us!" "No, we didn't. Maya and Lucia distracted us so Jadis could rape my girl." "I didn't know about that. I never did like Jadis' view of sharing everything. Why'd you take the money?" "Well, seeing as how we were leaving, and how I wanted to get back at Jadis for what she did, I decided that was me and Kala's cut of the loot. After all, ya'll were going to hit more banks." Ash nodded. Raven paused then added, "We really could use your help." Ash replied, "Jadis just isn't after the money, she wants all of you dead as well. I can't stand the thought of her killing those two little girls. Count me in." "What're we going to do?," Kala asked. "They're holed up in there with one of your girls," Ash told them, "There's only one thing to do. Try to kill them before they kill us." ***** Ash walked back across the street to the motel. Walking over to Rayne, she began talking to her, distracting her so that she was unaware of Raven until it was too late. Striking her with the butt of her gun, Rayne collapsed. Quietly sneaking up to the room, Raven, ever so slightly, inserted the key into the lock and unlocked it. Then looking at Kala and Ash beside her, she opened it. As the door swung open and she stepped through, everything became a blur to Raven. Bonnie laid on the floor with Jadis standing above her. Raven immediately put two rounds into Diamond, dropping her. Raven's arm exploded in pain, causing her to drop her gun. Kala came into the doorway, firing once, but Bonnie jumped up at that time and she had to duck back as Jadis swung her gun towards her, splintering the door frame with her shot. Raven drew her boot knife and threw it as Jadis aimed at her and pulled the trigger. The gun fell from Jadis' hand as she grasped the knife sticking out of her neck, then fell on the floor, dead. Bonnie ran over crying as she threw her arms around Raven. Raven couldn't seem to focus her eyes on Bonnie, then suddenly, her legs gave out from underneath her. She crumpled to the floor as Bonnie screamed. Kala and Ash rolled her over on her back, revealing two dark red splotches on her shirt. As Bonnie held onto her, screaming, "Please don't die!," Ash pulled her off and pulled out her phone, dialing 911. Kala quickly grabbed a towel from the bathroom, using it to plug the two gunshots in Raven's chest and arm. Raven, semiconscious, mumbled, "Bonnie...Is Bonnie alright?" "Yes, she's fine," Kala quickly assured her, "Stay with me, Raven!" "EMS is on it's way, Kala," Ash reported. Kala glanced up at Ash, "Ash, we can't have the girls involved with the authorities. There's a trail to the left of the motel, leading into the woods. About a hundred feet down it is the other little girl. Her name's Jennie and she's hiding behind a tree. Take Bonnie with you so Jennie will know you're a friend. Keep both girls there until the police leave!" Ash went to take Bonnie's hand, but Bonnie held on to Raven, begging, "No, I won't leave her...Don't die...please don't die...I love you..." Raven turned to look at her, but everything was blurry and then...faded.....to.....black.... ***** Kala walked down the hall of Las Animas County Hospital towards room 138. Raven had just come out of surgery a few hours ago and was supposed to wake up any minute. A sheriff's deputy stood outside the door. As Kala approached, she asked him, "Is she awake?" "No, I'm still waiting for her to come around so I can get a statement." Kala slowly walked into the room. Raven's right arm and chest were bandaged. An IV tube dangled from her left arm. Kala saw her eyes were still closed as she went over to the side of the bed. In the reflection of the mirror by the sink, Kala watched the deputy slowly trail her inside, standing about ten feet behind her. She maneuvered her body so that she was between Raven and the deputy. "Raven?," she whispered. Kala took her hand, "Raven, can you hear me? Ash is hiding the girls. Cops don't know about `em." Raven didn't respond. "Raven?" Raven's eyes opened half-way and, to Kala's surprise, subtly winked at her. Kala breathed a sigh of relief and asked, "How're you feeling?" "Like shit." The deputy, hearing their conversation, took a couple of steps towards them. Kala barely glanced over at him with her peripheral vision. She felt Raven squeezing her hand, bringing her attention back. Raven asked in a questioning voice, "What did those robbers want at the motel? I don't remember nothing." Raven squeezed her hand hard, staring intensely at her as she whispered fiercely, "Nothing!" Kala stared back, giving an imperceptible nod of understanding. ***** Monday afternoon. Kala and Raven walked toward the motel room. Raven had spent the last two days recovering at the hospital. Her only visitor had been Kala because they didn't want anyone finding out about the girls. As the door opened and Raven walked through, Bonnie burst forth, running over and throwing herself into her arms. "Hey, careful. I'm still a little weak," Raven told her. "It seems like I haven't seen you in forever," Bonnie buried her face into Raven's chest. "I've missed you too." Kala walked over to Ash, "Thanks for watching the girls." "No problem." "What're you going to do now that Jadis is dead. Without her, the Burning Angels are pretty much no more." "Go back to San Antonio." Raven walked over to the duffle bag and opened it, "Thanks for everything, Ash. Hey, Take some of the loot. Part of it's yours anyway and after all you've done, you deserve it." Ash took out two handfuls of bills, "You're gonna need most of it taking care of these girls. If you're ever in San Anton', look me up. Goodbye girls." "Goodbye, Ash," Bonnie and Jennie replied. Ash left, leaving them alone. "Well, checkout's in an hour and we need to decide what we're going to do," Kala said. Raven sat on the bed, pulled out her phone and began looking at Google Maps. Kala came over and sat beside her, "Let's go back to Austin." "There's a couple of problems with that," Raven answered, "Whoever's watching for us in Austin might not know that Jadis is dead and so it could be dangerous to go back. Also, the Austin police will be looking for the girls." "Well, where can we go?" "Hey, there's the tree!" Raven and Kala looked at Jennie, who had crawled up on the bed beside Kala and was looking down at the map. "Huh?," Raven queried. "What tree?," Kala asked. "There," Jennie pointed to a name on the map, "That's where Grandma lives." Raven and Kala looked at where she was pointing. Walnut Grove. "Your grandma lives there?" "Yea. We could live with her. She's really nice." "I think your grandma will want to know what you and Bonnie are doing with us." "She won't care. She never liked my dad and told me that if me and mom could ever get away, we could live with her." "She didn't like your dad?" "No. She's my mom's mom and was always telling Mom to leave him. When my dad moved us to Texas, I didn't see her anymore." "Do you know the address?" "No, but I remember how to get there." "What do you think?," Kala asked Raven. "I'm wondering what Grandma's gonna think when you pull up on a motorcycle with her granddaughter and ask if we all could live with her." "I just know she'll love ya'll," Jennie assured them. "Well, it's a better possibility than Austin, so I say we go," Kala announced to the others. Raven stood up, "I guess we'll see what happens."
