THE ONLY ONE Chapter 4 The sudden knockings on the door suddenly shook Fiona from her sleep. Though she didn't manage to get the sleep she wanted, her eyes seemed to be pretty relaxed and completely awake. The knockings only lasted for a few seconds and then ceased when Neil told them to get ready as breakfast was about to be served. Fiona didn't bother to listen to his words and the only thing on her mind was Regan and what was she up to as her gaze quickly shifted to the bed and then to the closed bathroom but there was no sign of her bathing. Seeing that, she could clearly feel her heart was hammering at the front of her chest heavily and came down to an assumption that Regan was indeed upset about what happened last night that flipped the covers off her body and rushed to the door when she heard the bathroom door unlock and saw Regan coming out refreshed in just her casual wear. Regan noticed the alarmed look on Fiona's face and also knew the cause of that. To ease the tension, she gave a soft smile but Fiona wasn't convinced with that that she walked up to her almost rushing up to her to beg for forgiveness after last night's event. "Regan, I am sorry. I shouldn't have that to you." Fiona said it out straight not giving her time to breathe and continued to apologize profusely. "I just couldn't help myself. I totally lost it Regan. Please forgive me." Fiona didn't know what else to say and seeing Regan just standing there without giving her any form of reply or gesture didn't allow the stress in Fiona's mind to fade but it only increased more and more and backed away slowly knowing that it was of no use. Regan quickly moved up to her and took Fiona's hands and pulled her to a hug surprising her a little but the slow tender rub that Regan was giving to her back gradually made her to calm down. "Hey, it wasn't any of your fault. I was pretty drunk that I lost myself control. I didn't know what came up to me that I did such a thing. I am sorry Fiona." Regan stammered a little and gently caressed Fiona's teary face and continued, "Fiona, you do have feelings too and I know I pushed myself to you to the extreme that even though you did try your best to stop me, you couldn't." Regan slowly broke the embrace after feeling Fiona's heartbeat getting back to normal and continued to stroke her arms lovingly to ease her a little but even then Fiona continued to apologize and slowly broke the embrace with her gaze fixed on Regan's. "Actually it was both of our faults. We shouldn't have drunk too much and we shouldn't have shared the same bed." Fiona suggested as she saw Regan smiling softly at her and gave her another hug to reassure her that everything is okay. "Let's not think about it anymore. Now, please go and get yourself refreshed. I will catch you downstairs." Regan told her and left Fiona in her privacy. Even though, Regan did say to forget what has been done last night, she couldn't help to think about their wild lovemaking that somewhere in her thoughts, she felt bad about herself for making Fiona go through this confusion and pain and scolded herself softly for bringing up stress to Fiona and vowed not to drink too much again. "Hey sis." Neil greeted. "Good day Fiona" he greeted again as he saw Fiona coming down the stairs and taking a seat next opposite Regan. "Fiona, did you sleep last night? Your eyes look a bit sore." Neil asked her curiously as he served the girls some pancakes and Fiona looked at him in puzzlement with Regan wondering if he had known what happened last night. "Yeah...I did." Fiona replied nervously and slowly looked away from his gaze as Regan looked at her brother with the same anxious look. Neil looked at them with a grin on his face and continued eating without saying anything. That made it worse for the girls that they lost their appetite completely and were in such desperation to know the meaning behind that grin that Regan secretly begged brother to let it out and her wishful prayers worked in just a few minutes when Neil again looked at them with a smirk. "What were you girls doing in the kitchen late last night?" Neil asked casually and Fiona immediately downed her drink in one gulp and Regan began to blush furiously. "We were just checking on what to get when we go for grocery shopping." Fiona answered and remained innocent. "Oh really, and you guys changed your mind and decided to shop for love and began thinking of what other sex toys to get?" Neil asked not caring about his blunt statement that Fiona almost wanted to throw a pancake at him to shut his mouth up while Regan sat stunned letting her cheeks grow redder and just continued to eat quietly. "Maybe that happened in your dreams, Neil." Fiona rebutted and playfully stuck her tongue at him and gestured Regan to just ignore her brother's babble for a while. But that wasn't going to stop him from talking any further and getting himself amused just by watched their faces flushed up. "Oh yeah, in my dreams last night, I couldn't sleep so I went down to the living room and rested myself on the couch. There I saw two young girls going to the kitchen secretly and took one of my wine bottles and started drinking. After a while, I saw one girl walking to the other and began kissing her like as if there is no tomorrow. Slowly, they..." Neil began when Fiona abruptly stopped him and took out her mobile from her breast pocket. Neil sat wondering what was she up to but Regan knew the answer and just pretended to be unaware and watched the show in silence. "Who are you calling to?" Neil asked in desperation and tried to snatch away her mobile but failed. "One push and your balls will be on fire." Fiona threatened Neil with such a sexy tone that sent shivers down Regan's spine down to her loins. Fiona then showed her mobile to him and Neil sat flabbergasted as he looked at Travis number displayed on her mobile screen with her thumb ready to push the `call' button any second he misbehaves with the girls. "Okay cool cool. I will keep it shut. Please don't dial." Neil begged with his pleading eyes as Fiona looked at Regan and her smile made Fiona to forgive him and threaten that Travis was her trump card. "Hmm...looks like Travis must have screwed your behind so hard that he must have drained your sex drive for at least a week." Fiona teased looking at him with a raised eyebrow as her lips created a wicked grin. "Yeah...I am glad you noticed. Now let's get to work." Neil said as he got up from his seat and brought the dishes back to the kitchen with the girls both grinning at him and helping him out. Fiona then had a self tour of the house and slowly made her way up to Regan's room where she left her belongings. Once all packed down, she sat at the edge of the bed as she started caressing the bedsheets and allowing the memory of last night's love making to brush across her mind. She couldn't believe how that happened. Regan didn't regret or get mad at her and that made her heart content and made a soft promise to herself not to make any sexy move towards her until the both of them are ready to give themselves to each other wholeheartedly. Just when she thought of leaving the room, a picture of Regan posing at a shore that was displayed on her desk caught her eye. She reached out for the photo and took her mobile from her pocket and switched on to the camera mode. After getting the angle right, Fiona snapped and looked at the preview of the photo in her mobile. She was indeed satisfied with the photo shoot and set that as her wallpaper. "Stop drooling at Regan." Neil teased with a smirk on his face as Fiona looked at him wondering how long had he been standing at the doorway. "I could sense that last night was totally unexpected for the both of you." Fiona simply didn't know how to reply that she rested herself on her elbows and looked at him with a blank expression expecting him to say something and he eventually did. "I'm sorry I am making you go through such a difficult time with my sister. She got some much love in stored for you but I don't know what's preventing her from loving you. Monica's memories will be cherished but I thought it would be better she finds someone whom she can share her life with." Neil replied sadly as he sat cross legged facing Fiona on the bed. "Neil, come on, don't be upset." Fiona consoled as she took his hands and gave a gentle tender squeeze on his shoulders. "Regan has feelings too and it's not nice to push anything inside her heart. Listen, it will take a bit more time for her to let someone enter into her life because of the love she has kept for Monica. Any girl would behave like that. Like they say, only a girl would know and understand another girl's feelings but I am also not saying that guys do not understand. It's just like how a guy can only understand another guy's feelings and though sometimes the girl does claim to herself that she does know how the guy feels about an issue, it leads to a misunderstanding because of that assumption. It's all man-woman psychological problems. Some cases work out well and some don't. That's all." Fiona explained as she saw Neil paying attention to ever word he was saying and nodded his head in agreement. "No woman can be like you. If not, for Regan's case, the woman would have simply gave up and move on with her life." Neil said not knowing what else to say to her after hearing the psychological defects between both genders. "Well, I am not like any girl. I am just myself. Just that, I love Regan so much. I'm deeply in love with her and I don't find the necessity for her to know about the love I have for her because I have the faith and hope that she will come and embrace the love with me." Fiona told Neil as she watched his eyes beginning to cloud but he managed to look away from her gaze and wipe the oncoming tears quickly. Fiona didn't know how to comfort him and to make him stop worrying about his sister's future. Gently taking his hand in hers, she gave a soft squeeze and gave a reassuring smile that things will fall into place and that gave him a slight relief. After making a final check of her stuff, Fiona led Neil to the door when he stopped her and just looked at her for a few seconds before coming up with his question. "Why do you love Regan so much?" Neil asked bluntly as Fiona let out a soft chuckle and wondered what was that question suppose to mean. "Okay Neil, why is your hair black? Or even better, why do you love Travis so deeply? I am asking you now." Fiona asked casually talking Neil by surprise. "What sort of question is that?" Neil asked not being able to comprehend as Fiona replied, "Exactly. Love is also like that. It's natural and cannot be explained. It also doesn't get destroyed if that love is true and pure just like mine with Regan and you with Travis." Neil just stood by the doorway not knowing what else to say to counter her after much thinking and simply watched Fiona slipping the strap of her duffel bag up her shoulders and casually walked out to the front door with Neil calling out to Regan from the kitchen. She was finally done with the cleaning and wiped her hands on the hand towel and saw that Fiona was already packed and ready to go. A sudden sense of loneliness slowly began to creep into Regan's heart that she couldn't seek the answer for it. Last night, and in the morning, she was feeling rather happy and was at peace but now she began to feel that something was missing and she just stood at the door contemplating what was the matter when Fiona snapped her fingers at her and brought her back to reality and thanked Regan and her brother for the hospitality and will be coming down to see them in a week's time once she has settled some important issues with the church that she was brought up in. Though Regan's body was there and her hand was doing the waving for her, her mind was elsewhere and Neil noticed that and waited to ask Regan what was battling inside. The both of them simply nodded their head in agreement and watched Fiona making her way down to her house. "Sis, are you okay? You seem like you have lost something." Neil asked out of curiosity "Yes, I am alright. I didn't lose anything. What makes you say that?" "Regan, you haven't lost it yet for now, but you are in the midst of losing it." "What are you talking about?" Regan asked in total confusion. "What am I going to lose?" "I am referring to Fiona." Neil replied softly as Regan looked at him with no sign of expression. "Please sis, please don't lose her." Neil pleaded to her and it was then Regan did understand what he was trying to tell her earlier. But her annoyance and ignorance grew at the same time with his pleadings and requests that she went into the kitchen to check if everything was taken care of. "Look Regan, the both of you may lie about your feelings for each other." He stated as he grabbed hold of Regan's hand preventing from taking another step. "You may tell other people that Fiona is your friend and so does she. But, I am your brother and you can't lie to me about your feelings for her. If you dare, can you look into my eyes and tell me that you don't have any thoughts about committing a relationship with her and spending the rest of your life with her? Can you tell me just like that straight in my face?" Neil challenged her and Regan knew deep inside her that she will lose it but on the other she did wanted to prove that a tongue has no bones and it doesn't show any flexibility by saying those words that Neil challenged her to. Her mouth was willing to spill those words out but not her heart or eyes. Looking at Neil she knew he wasn't going to give up on this issue like he always used to and she could see him determined to only leave this matter until her reply turns out favorable to him. At the same time, she also knows about her brother very well and she has clearly seen that her brother will not push her unnecessarily into the things that she wasn't willing to do and if it so happens, it will only be for her own good in future. However, in this matter, she was in the middle of nowhere. "Neil, please. How many times have I told you? I have Fiona's deep friendship and most importantly, I have your love, brother. That's enough for me." Regan stated hoping her brother would not rebut her on this statement but that slight hope was dashed and Neil could feel his annoyance was gradually increasing seeing his sister's adamant behavior. "What if I am gone? Dead? What will u do?" Neil shouted still trying to keep his patience in check. "Look Regan, friendship is different. Love is different. Friendship is only going to be there for a time period but not love. Sis, I just don't want you to spend the rest of your life all by yourself. Why don't you understand?" "You are not being understanding Neil. There are many people out there who are spending their lives by themselves. They are coping it rather well. Then why are you assuming that I can't?" Regan retorted as her anger slowly began to rise and turned herself to face the wall not wanting to look at her brother's face for a while. "Regan, it's very easy to say. But it's going to be difficult for you in real life. Maybe not now, but later, you will feel that you need a companion but by then it will be too late." Neil tore down a little and slowly walked up to his sister wrapping his arms around here. "Fiona is living for you my dear. If it was another woman, she would have left a long time ago and most probably moved on with another. Fiona is not like that. She chose you and she loves you deeply and she wants to spend the rest of her life with you. You are the only one for her Regan." "But you are not trying to understand my feelings." Regan told him as she hugged him tightly letting her tears stream down his shirt. "I don't want to forget Monica. She is always a part of me." "Sis, I know you can't forget her. I'm not asking you to erase your memories of her. I'm just asking u to enjoy your life and move on. There is someone out there who wants to share her joys and sorrows with you and so do you. I just want you to be happy and live a good life with her. I have said all the things that a brother and as a friend would say to his sister. The choice is yours and please do think about it carefully. I promise, from now on, I won't bring this issue up ever again but I do hope you would make the right decision and I will be there to support you throughout." Neil explained as he wrapped his arms around his sister's waist and gave his best hug possible to reassure her that his brother will stay supportive in whatever decision she makes. Days passed and the situation in their home didn't change that much. After the talk, Regan didn't spend much time at home but she was still in talking terms with her brother and on some occasions they do go out for movies only if Regan was in the mood. But most of the times, she would go out on her own and would return late and that was a change his brother saw since she was mostly a homebody person. As usual, she greeted her brother who was still resting on the bed wondering if to wake up or to continue to slumber but decided to walk down his sister to the front door. "I will be back home late in the evening. I want to go someplace quiet. So please don't wait up for me and I also have the key. Any problem, I will call you." Regan said as Neil nodded his head in agreement and watched her making her way down to the street. Thinking of where to go and rest her head, Regan realized that it has been quite sometime since she spent her time in the beach and she slowly headed down the coast watching the waves crashing across the rocks as she inched her way further to the shore. Taking a deep breathe, Regan stood near the shore allowing the cool water to brush past her feet as she began thinking of Monica and Neil. Though she did think about the good times she had with them, the little brother-sister talk that they had a few days ago kept coming back to her. Regan could remember every single word her brother said like as if it happened yesterday. She even thought about Fiona and how she had indirectly taunt her and yet Fiona didn't put much bother to that and still maintained the distance and friendship with her when she clearly knew how was Fiona feeling towards her but still she respected her feelings for her. Most of all, Regan couldn't forget the promises Fiona made and how each time Fiona tries her best to protect them, it was Regan who somehow makes Fiona to break it causing them to lose both of their self controls and even then Fiona would respect her boundaries and treat her as a friend and would not do anything to take advantage of the vulnerabilities. Thinking of all these made Regan's heart wrench and let her eyes to wander across the coast carelessly searching for an answer- a remedy to cure all the pain she caused to Fiona, and that remedy soon arrived when she saw a middle aged couple softly calling out her name while walking towards her direction. Regan turned to look at the elderly woman and then back at the old man next to her who is her husband and made her mind to recall those two familiar faces. `Monica's parents!' Regan murmured under her breathe as a wide smile slowly crept across her lips. "Good day Mr. and Mrs. Turner! How are you doing?" Regan greeted them from quite afar as she walked towards them and gave each of them a warm hug. "Hello dear. We are all fine. It's so great to see you again." Mr. Turner greeted her back when his wife caressed her cheeks and pulled her to another hug and told her," We are so sorry we couldn't keep in touch. We did want to call and come down to visit you but I guess my husband misplaced your contact card and also we forgot to give you our contact during the hassle." "It's alright. At least, I am glad to see u people now." Regan replied as she noticed Mr. Turner began to look around as if he was searching for someone." Sir, are you looking for someone?" She asked as his wife looked at Regan with a smile and nudged her husband to ask whatever he was thinking about. "You came all by yourself?" "Yeah. My brother is at home. Were you expecting someone with me?" Regan asked with a soft smile on her face. "I was hoping you might introduce someone to us." Monica's father quizzed as Regan stood confused and he looked at his wife grinning at her. "Introduce who?" Regan asked puzzled as she noticed the smile and grin on their faces slowly began to fade and the couple then knew that she was seriously oblivious to their question and wondered if Regan hasn't moved on with her life since their daughter's death. "We didn't mean to pry into your personal life but we thought that you have moved on with someone new and perhaps you might like to introduce that girl to us." Mr. Turner replied softly as Regan squeezed his arm for comfort and replied, "I haven't found anyone new. I am planning to stay on like this. As a matter of fact, I like it this way." `No Regan. It's time you find someone new. There is no point in you staying on like this and there is no point thinking of the past except to cherish the memories you have for Monica." Mrs. Turner explained and tried to encourage Regan to move on with her life. "You know, I thought that girl whom we met a few months back...err...let me think...," Mr. Turner told Regan and tapped his forehead with his finger for a few moments to recall and continued, "Yes, now I remember, we met this girl with your brother and your brother and you introduced her to us as his good friend. I believe that her name is Fiona." "Ahh...yes...she is our good friend. What about her?" Regan asked as the both of them softly smiled at her. "Well, honestly, we thought you would have intrduced Fiona as your girlfriend now but you didn't." Mrs. Turner told her as her smile slowly turned into a disappointment and Regan quickly looked away from their eyes not knowing what to say. Mr. Turner noticed her uneasiness and the pinkness forming at the side of her cheeks and gestured his wife to notice the blushing on Regan's cheeks and knew that it was a sign to show that she does have feelings for Fiona but the feelings have not been fully blossomed and that it will take much time. "Oh dear Regan, we will be making a move now. If we leave early, we will be able to catch our flight back home on time." Mr. Turner replied, as he eased her down by changing the topic and handed his card with their residence and Regan accepted it politely. After looking at it for a moment, she slipped into her purse and took out her card with her contact information and handed it to them. "One more thing, my dear." Monica's mother said as she took the card from Regan and looked at her in the eyes all ready to listen to what she was about to say. "The next time, we come down to visit you, we should be seeing you with Fiona and hear you say that Fiona is your girlfriend. I didn't mean to make it sound like an order but just a humble request. You may venture to look out for some other girl but I don't think she could be as caring and understanding as how Fiona is. I think she is meant for you." "Regan, I know how much love you have for Monica and I'm sure Fiona loves you more than that. She is the appropriate one for you and I can see how much she actually cares for you both as a friend and a lover." Mr. Turner explained as Regan listened to him carefully processing all the thoughts in her head. "We are looking at you as our own daughter and we want to see you happy again not just for now but for lifelong. If you are still thinking of Monica, this would be exactly what she wants. She would want to see her girlfriend happy again. Only then her soul will rest in peace knowing that you are living happily with someone who cares about you more than her." Regan then realized her own silliness and knew that nothing is going to change if she is going to spend her life brooding about Monica. But Regan knew Monica's memories will be cherished by her. "I understand what you said and I will do as you are told. I will spend the rest of my life with Fiona wholeheartedly." Regan said as she hugged them causing them to smile widely and they wished her the best in life and began to make their way out as she stood there watching them fading away behind the gates.
