It contains explicit material and is not for younger readers. Young Forbidden Love By: lasquared22@yahoo.com Laney stood in the hallway waiting for Melonie, her best friend of the last three years in Hell. They had been enrolled together at the high school for five out of seven courses, and mostly favorited the Spanish class. In the mornings, they both took Algebra 2, Art 2, Spanish 2, and English Composition, but after lunch they only had Gym together, which made it hard to see each other in passing till the end of seventh period. Melody was rather shy and didn't talk much, but after a while she opened up and became more social with certain people. Laney just happened to be the person to open her up. They immediately became friends and talked about everything together, except one thing...Laney was keeping a secret from her best friend, Laney was a lesbian. "What's up?", Melody had pulled her from a day dream. "Nothing really, how you doin'?" "Waiting for Art, I need to create something, anything...my mind is ready to explode on paper!" "Wow, don't you sound excited," Laney giggled and added, "maybe we should head up there then." As they headed towards the Art room, they met up with Melody's sister, Beth, who seemed to be in a rush as she headed towards the gym for the last period before lunch. Melody leaned over and asked Beth something, and then headed off nodding her head agreeably. She looked at Beth jogging in her track shorts, and closed her eyes imagining her body... "Hello, is anybody home? Earth to Laney!" Melody said jokingly, "We should head to class now." They reached their desks, sat down, and listened to the teacher explain the assignment. As she finished her assignment details, everyone went to get supplies from the closet and sat down and became social. The teacher had began the year with allowing music and talking among the students, to improve creative solutions...basically allowing them to be kids. Melody had began a beautiful piece of art, by first splashing drops of watercolor all over the paper and allowing it to dry. Miss Audry continued to walk around the room, inspecting every aspect of art from each student. She passed Laney and smiled, but Laney had nothing but blank paper in front of her, and an image of Beth in the back of her mind. "So, what are you doing this weekend?" she said as her breath dried the watermarks. "No place to go and nothing to do, just like every weekend," she said in monotone, "what are you doing?" "Same only with a whole lot of nothing, and more to do. Would you like to join us for the weekend? My mom thinks you're swell!" she said with a toothy grin. Laney busted into laughter, only stopping when Miss Audry stared at her, jaw dropping, and eyes scolding. Melody's mother was extremely intimidating for a petite woman, but could probably wrestle a bear to the ground with one hand tied behind her back, and then snuggle with it afterwards. It was just hard to imagine her saying 'swell' in a sentence, with the thought of her wrestling bears and looking like a superhero for all those years, Laney just looked up to her like a role model for the rough and tumble girl she'd become. "I don't know, are all your sisters gonna be there?" "Yeah, but we can get away from them for a while if you wanna..." she smirked. Laney didn't mind her sisters, they were actually pretty fun to be around. Melody was followed by April, Beth, and Raine with ages from seventeen to fourteen, respectively of course. Laney still couldn't get Beth out of her mind and began drawing a shadowy woman's figure on the paper in front of her. Sketching her eyes into the picture, she realized that the image strangely looked like Beth and even caught the attention of her older sister, who was looking at the portrait with disbelief. "Wow, that looks like Bethany."she stared a little longer, but dismissed it just as quickly when the lunch bell rang. Laney grabbed her art supplies and paper, stuffing it into a folder as she told Melody she'd meet her in the cafeteria. She needed to get her books for the next three classes, and headed down the hall towards the junior lockers. She turned the corner and came into contact with something that hit her so hard that she grabbed it and held it still. It was Beth, and Beth looked very surprised. "Are you alright? Did I hurt you?" she seemed so sincere. "No, it's cool, I wasn't paying any attention to where I was going. My bad." Laney was never so nervous around Beth, and she could sense Beth's curiosity coming from her eyes. She suddenly realized that she was still holding Beth tightly and let go with same amount of intensity. "Are you sure you're alright? I don't want to be known as the track jock that runs you over and leaves you for dead. You're sure, right?" "Yeah, I'm sure. Why you runnin' so fast anyway?" "I'm trying to get to my classes on time, but I got out of gym and needed to grab some homework outta my locker. I'm just so used to hurrying around, I forget to take my time during lunch. Why weren't you paying attention to where you were going?" The answer was not as easy as she had made the question; it involved a combination of events from the past, present, and the future she was dreaming about when she absent mindedly ran into Beth. She said the first lie that came to mind, "I was studying Spanish in my mind, and took my eyes off the road. I guess this means we need to exchange insurance info, right?" She laughed, tossing her hair to the side. "Are you coming over this weekend? I want to go camping tonight so will you come and help us build a fire?" "Yeah, I'll be there. I'll see ya later, I've gotta go by my locker and grab some books. Bye, Beth." she said as she took off in the direction of her locker. She was almost five feet away when she felt a hug from behind. "See you after school." she whispered into Laney's ear. Laney rushed away and just before she got to the locker, a very familiar voice spoke up. "So, are you coming over for the weekend again?" It was Melody. She looked almost shocked, but remained calm and collected. Laney wondered if she'd seen her sister give her that hug, which must have seemed rather strange from a distance. "Yeah, sounds great. I'll run to my house and grab some clothes and stuff and I'll be over after that." "Okay, see ya then." Laney took off towards the library, where she spent most of her lunches, and quickly sat down. Opening her backpack and reaching in she immediately found what she was looking for, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and a bruised apple. "Perfect" she thought,"maybe I could pick up the latest copy of Cosmo, and do the quiz too." She laughed at her own joke and grabbed the Rolling Stones Magazine instead. As she finished her sandwich, she glanced over at another shelf and noticed a book entitled "The Prophet", and stood up to grab it. A friend had suggested it and she had been right about a few other good titles. "Why not?" she said, opening up to the first page. As she began to read, the words began to swirl in her head, filling it with pure words of love and humanity, she heard the end lunch bell ring. She stood up and threw the apple back in the pack, zipping it, and grabbed her checkout card and took it to the library office. The second lunch ring was a clue that she had to make it to her next class within about three minutes, so she checked out "The Prophet" and the Rolling Stones she'd found earlier. It took a minute and she still had to make it to the other side of the one-story, mile long school. She thought a second and decided to take the least amount of traffic through the gravel between the buildings. She sprinted to the end and had to make it past the lunch room. She chose the backway, around all those people and slipped in the door to the locker room, dressing out and most importantly, not late. Coach Avery, came in a second behind the bell and stood up straight. Mrs. Avery was in her late thirties, not really bad looking, but her stern look, and somewhat German features seemed to make her stand at attention, as though she was commanded by her body. "Alright, since it's such a nice day outside, I think we're gonna walk the track, everyone dress accordingly. And if you don't dress out, you get a zero for the day. Five minutes. I'll meet ya'll down there." She turned around and walked briskly out the door. Melody walked in a minute after that, turned to Laney, and asked about what they were doing that day. "Walking the track? Why not softball or tag football?" Melody mumbled under her breath. Laney agreed with her disgust, but they dressed and walked out to the track together, laughing about why Melody was late. It would seem that she had ran into her locker door after opening it, causing a cut on her arm. And while avoiding all the faculty, she managed to make it to the nurse's office, where the nurse simply laughs at the reason for the injury. It so happened there were three previous visits that week for the same complaint, vicious lockers. She had brought a note from the nurse, excusing herself from being late. As they reached the track, she handed the note to the coach and waited till she nodded to continue. She seemed curious about the injury, since it wasn't described on the form and marked as 'Other', but looked as though she didn't care to waste time listening to another story. "Warm ups everybody." Each student took a partner, and started the stretch of the century. Almost swan like these creatures were, only twisting and turning as far as they had to go, to satisfy the teacher. Looking over, she noticed that two students had fallen over during a simple balance exercise. She looked at Melody and nodded her head to signal stupidity as it's best. Melody laughed and turned her attention to the red headed boy in front of her. John was a Trek and Star Wars buff, he only dressed out to avoid confrontation. Melody smiled at him and Laney knew she liked him. Mrs. Avery was finished with warm ups and started for the track and the class followed her. They made it to the track and stepped onto the hot asphault, feeling the rubber burn off their tennis shoes, and walked around talking about what they were going to do that weekend. As they walked around, Melody talked and Laney listened, sinking back into the land of The Prophet, swirling in a sea of words. But they were only words, her mind went crashing into the 'what if's' and the 'what will happen' and seemed to be trapped in deep thought when the whistle blew from Coach Avery, signaling that it was wrap up time. Cool downs and the walk up the hill and they were done. They headed to the locker room and started dressing. The teacher walked into her office which was located in the girls locker room and began marking down grades for the day. Melody looked at Laney and said 'I'll see you later, right?" "Sure you will. I'll be over after I get my clothes." "Okay, I'll pack the camping gear and get some food together. It'll be fun. I promise!" Laney could see that she was forming a list in her head of the stuff they'd need, but nevertheless it would only prevent starvation and freezing to death, and considering it was the middle of March it could've gone either way. Their house was only two hundred feet away, it really wasn't like camping at all. It simply was a chance for them to be themselves without adults around. The rest of her day went slower, the clock proving it as she began to count down the seconds, thirty five, thirty four, and slower it went. She found herself already packed for the ride home to get her clothes, closing her book, and then her eyes. She could see images of all of the girls dancing around a fire and watching the glow of the fire off the pond. She didn't understand why, but that image would stay in her mind forever. She took off towards the parking lot as soon as the last bell rang. Hoping to beat the redneck procession of little trucks with big tires, Laney started the car, flung her backpack in the passenger seat, and took off towards her house. She arrived and grabbed the backpack, and stepped out of the car. Walking up to the door, she memorized everything about this moment, the smell of the air, the color of the flowers and plants, and opened the door. Nobody was home yet, so she decided to take her stuff up to her room and pack her clothes. She grabbed her deodorant and a t-shirt, and picked out a pair of shorts. She liked to show off her legs, they were beautiful and strong, and so was she. She snagged her toothbrush on the way out, leaving a note for her mother about where she would be if she was needed and headed out the door for Melody's house. The drive was only about thirty minutes from her house and she found herself speeding through town just to get there before nightfall. When Laney arrived the girls ran out to greet her with open arms. They were such a nice typical Native American family, celebrating traditions and embracing nature. They thought of her as one of the family. She couldn't let them down. "Are you ready to go camping? The girls have set up the tent already and dinner is packed on the counter. Laney glanced at the brown bag and wondered if included any homemade pie or breads. Their breads were the best in every county in a fifty mile radius. She knew, and she kept coming back for more. Not to mention, she sorta had a crush on Beth. And she wasn't sure, but she hoped Beth felt the same way. "Ready?" Melody asked. "Let's go. It's looking like it'll be dark in about a half an hour, and we need a fire." "Come on." Laney followed Melody and her sisters out to the woods, grabbing every log and twig she could. They arrived two minutes later, and Laney looked to see a fire pit already stocked and ready to blaze. She stepped in closer and noticed that they'd already carried all the wood needed for a night's stay. Throwing down the logs and finding herself a seat on a soft spread of moss, she plopped down and chuckled thinking about how these women could change a tire on the highway, barefoot in eight inches of snow. Just like their mother. "No-no. You have the job of starting the fire, and you'd better do it fast, we're losing light." She did as she was told and it immediately lit, causing a back flash...almost lighting her own hair on fire. She jumped back and landed in Beth's arms, who was laughing so hard at Laney's misfortune that she let them both fall to the ground. "I knew we didn't need the gas, but I just wanted to see what it would do...and I have my answer!" Melody laughed and walked to the fire pit. Beth still giggling behind her, stood up and started getting stuff out of the bag. Laney decided to go to her car and grab the sleeping bag and flashlight, and Beth stepped up and said she wanted to go with her. They walked for a while before either of them said a single thing, and the first words out of Beth's mouth were almost strangely exciting. "So, are you having a good time?" she smiled and looked at the ground. "Yeah, thanks for the invite. I would've just sat around home and done nothing and now I'm hiking two hundred feet from your front door!" Beth laughed out loud and reduced it to a quiet giggle as they approached Laney's car. Laney opened the trunk and grabbed out the sleeping bag, flashlight, and backpack from the front seat. Beth ran into the house and came out with something in her hand, shoving it into her pocket before Laney could get a look at it. Laney stared at her body as she came back to the car and smiled as she made it about halfway there. How could she be having feelings for her best friend's sister? Why did she feel this way? They walked back to the pond almost as quietly as they walked out, but now it was dark and a little more scary than the first time. Beth grabbed her hand to steady herself and Laney held on even tighter. It was almost as if they'd done this before, in a past life, holding hands and walking through the dark together. As they reached the pond, Laney stopped and looked at the sight before her. The girls were all dancing around the same fire as a bright glow from it cast on the pond below. Beth turned to Laney, gazed into her eyes, then leaned forward leaving Laney with nowhere to run. It was as if her daydream had become real, she felt Beth's soft lips touch her cheek, and her hands came to rest around Laney's neck. Hearing a noise in the bushes, they stopped and took a step back in both directions. Melody ran up and grabbed Laney by the arm before she even had a chance to say anything to Beth, who was smiling at her with her eyes. Laney smiled back, but was pulled away towards the camping site, where they came to a stop and sat down. Laney grabbed the book she was reading earlier, and began to read it out loud and all of them sat down listening intently to what she was saying. Beth came to rest around Laney's right, looking up at her while she read. They finished the first chapter of "The Prophet" and Laney put it down, marking her place and turning to Beth, who seemed frustrated that they'd not said anything to each other in a couple of minutes. They smiled at each other once more and Laney made the announcement that she was hungry and needed to relieve herself in the woods. She stood up and the youngest made the first attempt to cook something on the fire. A marshmallow. Such a valient attempt, Laney thought as she stood up and turned around. Walking into a wooded area about fifty feet in front of her, she automatically remembered that she'd have to do this in the dark, as she had forgotten the flashlight next to Beth. In the distance, she could see someone playing with the flashlight, and they began to walk her way. "It's me, Laney", as she continued with something about holding the flashlight for her, she noticed they were alone again. This almost frightened her, as she was afraid of getting caught by one of the other siblings she would be disowned, banished from her favorite place on Earth. But she told Beth to turn the light off, and as she did, Laney relieved herself and stood up again, swallowing the large boulder in her throat. "Are you done?", she whispered as Laney took a step towards her. "Yeah.", she whispered back realizing she was two feet in front of her and asked, "why did you kiss me?" " I wanted to see what it felt like, plus I've been wanting to for a couple of weeks, I just never got the chance." "Well, what did you think? Was it worth waiting for?" She stepped even closer and took a deep breath. In this darkness, she could only see an outline of her figure, but by the sound of her voice she was breathing heavy. "Yes." she moaned as Laney placed her hands on Beth's hips and pulled her closer. She could feel Beth moving, grinding, wanting more, but not here. She would tease her until they could be alone for a whole night alone. Now that she knew, she couldn't stop thinking about it and her heart was doing nothing but skipping a beat now and then. "Do you wanna kiss me again?" she said as their bodies met, causing Beth to moan a little louder. "Yes." she answered quickly, taking Laney by the mouth and leading her behind the tree. As her hands began to roam, Laney began to take control and moving her lips down Beth's cheek and neck, she realized that this was gonna be a lot harder to keep a secret for long. Sooner or later someone was gonna notice and say something. It was just a matter of time. The time seemed shorter, but they heard Melody ask if everything was alright, and both of them answered back with a brief 'Yes!', sighing and rolling their eyes. "We'll have plenty of time tomorrow." Laney said with a smile on her face. Beth nodded and turned on the flashlight as they began to walk back. They held hands until they got to the opening of the clearing, and suddenly Laney forgot why they had to hide their new found love. "Oh, yeah..."she thought. Raine wanted to hear more of the story from "The Prophet" and she settled down with the book once again, turning it to the next chapter. They listened intently as she poured out more of the story from her heart, and watched as their eyes lit up while seeing the words bust out of the pages. Dinner was ready, and Laney put down the book once again, marking the place where they'd left off. They took plates and began dishing out rations and everyone began eating at once. The taste of burnt campfire food never tasted as good as it did to her now. She finished and threw the paper plate into the fire, watching it burn up in an instant. The others followed tossing in their trash into the fire. Out of one corner she saw it coming. The yawn. She followed suite making sure it was convincing and stood up saying she was a bit tired and they did the same. The tent was a little bigger than it looked and they all fit inside standing up. Laughing about the curtain partition, they unrolled their sleeping bags and put on their pajamas and laid down for the night. The ground was cold on her bare feet, but she was already feeling lucky because she chose the spot closest to Beth and the one furthest away from everyone else. The rock on top of which they'd set the tent up had an extremely uncomfortable spot on which no one else would sleep had been abandoned. That left Laney snuggling up with Beth with a whole side to themselves. They waited until the others went to sleep before even thinking about moving, although they had been holding hands in the dark for quite some time. Caressing each other's hands quietly and sensually, they tried to remain silent and finally after an hour they were awake and alone at last. Laney glanced over at the curtain making sure she saw no movement and then rolled up closer to Beth, resting her hand on her chest. The intensity in which they'd been together earlier had not died, but had rather heightened the feelings they had in every inch of their bodies. They picked up where they left off and proceeded with kissing each other like before. It seemed harder to stay quiet than they anticipated, so they decided to wait for a better time to provide for each other. Beth's head came to rest on Laney's chest, and that's how they fell asleep. Laney awoke in the morning to find that the others were already outside and playing with the fire. She reached for her cigarettes and took one out of the pack. Lighting it would only mean that she'd have to step outside and smoke it and she wasn't ready for that yet. She dressed for the day and waited for someone to come in and get her, but no one did. So she got herself out of bed and rolled up her bag and unzipped the tent, letting the wind hit her sweaty body. It felt so wonderful after roasting in the tent, that she sighed when it blew harder. She looked at the scenery and allowed her eyes to adjust to the sunlight, while searching her pockets for a lighter. She located the lighter, sat down by the fire, and asked about when they woke up. Lighting her cigarette she looked at everyone and Melody seemed to be struggling with something. "oh, no" she thought, "what if she'd woken up earlier and saw what was going on?" What would she say? Maybe she could chalk it up to the indiscretions of youth, but if only she could talk to her about it and explain. Would she understand? Would she even care? Enough with the questions, she thought, she could try to explain later and they would see what happens then. She looked at Melody who was smiling with such force and decided to talk to her. "How did you sleep?" Laney asked. "Good, and you?" "Well, the rock was comfortable for about a minute and I guess I must've smashed Beth rolling down the hill." She waited for Melody's reaction, but it never came. She smirked half heartedly and looked over at the pond. "Should we go fishing?" Melody asked. Laney turned to face the pond and nodded her her and said something about the weather being perfect and they all stood up and headed for the barn to grab their poles. Since Laney was a regular at the house, she had her own pole already strung and baited, and they headed back to the pond. They all sat down in a line, Laney sat down a foot from Melody, and Beth sat down right next to her casting her line in the muddy water. The other two grabbed a rock about three feet down from them and starting baiting their hooks. Live bait was so wiggly and alive, but she always preferred something that wasn't moving. It was easier than putting a noose around it's neck, or worse, shoving it's ass full of metal hook. Barbed metal hook. She noticed that Beth was sitting so close to her that they were touching and Melody seemed oblivious to the fact that they sat that close. Laney thought she might actually catch something, so she set the pole down and grabbed a pronged stick and stuck it in the mud. She centered the pole on the stick and came to rest on the ground next to Beth. They stared at each other over and over again, feeling the urge to take off into the woods and leave the rest of them to fish alone. But it would never work, they'd have to go in separate directions for different things and meet somewhere. She leaned over and whispered something into her ear and Beth immediately reeled in her line, sat it on the bank so that it would not roll down, and took off in the direction where Laney had used the tree the night before. Laney waited about three minutes and stood up, reeling in her line as well, and sat it next to Beth's. She looked at Melody and said she had to get something out of her car and use the toilet inside. She took off on the path and made her way to the house, laughing as she watched Beth creep through the field and towards the barn. Laney was also looking at the driveway. Both vehicles were gone and that meant they had the house to themselves. They made it inside before they started to kiss and Beth pushed her to the wall, pinning her against the hard wood. Laney made an effort to break free, but caught herself resisting the urge to move, she accepted the loving and made a couple of noises in appreciation. They heard a vehicle pull up in the driveway and made their way outside, through the backdoor and waited to hear the slamming of the front door before they took off into the woods behind the barn. When they reached the barn, they began to laugh uncontrollably, and then Beth kissed her one more time before they got to the campsite. When they arrived, Melody had already caught two fish and Raine had caught two. That meant that someone had to catch one more and Laney decided that it would be her. They sat down and threw their lines out into the water, waiting for a bite and it wasn't ten minutes later that both of them had a tug on their poles. Laney reeled hers in first and Beth trying to get hers to shore before her, lost it...it wasn't quite on there as good as it should've been. They decided to clean the fish and eat them for dinner, and while that was going on, a small whisper entered Laney's head. "You know we can spend the night in the house," she thought, "just make a suggestion and they will agree." "I'll cook them and clean them if we can sleep inside tonight." Everyone agreed since no one really wanted to clean them anyways. So they began taking down the tent and putting out the fire, and took off for the house. Laney dropped her sleeping bag, backpack, and flashlight in the car and only had a stringer of fish and a pole, which Raine offered to take back to the barn for everyone. She handed her pole to Raine and she gladly took it back. She guessed Raine really, really didn't like cleaning fish. When they entered the door, they noticed that their mother was home and began cleaning up for dinner. Their mother seemed delighted that they caught so many fish and grabbed the cornmeal mixture for a good ole fish fry, and began making a clear space on the counter for Laney to cut it up. Laney had skinned some fish in her life, and began by chopping off their heads, waiting for them to stop flopping around on the counter, before she continued. It was after all, nature suffering from slow death by amputation of the head. Don't prolong the suffering, she said to herself. She began cutting them making sure that they would have enough for everyone, and tossing them into the batter mix. Finally, after an hour of preparation, she had finished the cooking and delagated dishes to April, sat down at the table, and ate a meal inside. After dinner was over they decided to watch a movie and Laney agreed to "Aladdin". They stuck it in the VCR, and pushed play, and while they were watching the opening credits roll, Beth sat down next to Laney on the couch and laid down. The room was dark and they all sat there, watching the movie intently. All except Beth and Laney. Beth had started to move her hand up Laney's shorts and she must've hit something, because Laney laughed at nothing and began to squirm. They had separated their contact by a pillow, and judging from the amount of touching they were doing, she was gonna do something terrible soon. And she was glad the pillow was there to protect her from the eyes of her friends and family. As the movie progressed, so did the heavy petting under the pillow. Laney began to run her hand down Beth's back, lingering around the nape of her neck. She traced up her neck and around her ear, watching the expressions on her face for a sign that it was okay to continue in front of her family. But no facial clue ever showed, only a continued hand up her shorts and a smirk across her face. Laney's hand slipped further down accessing her breasts from the backside and Beth shot a look in her direction. The move seemed to make her a little uneasy, but as Laney barely scraped her nipple, she closed her eyes and turned in the direction of the movie. Laney took this opportunity to talk to Melody, keeping her eyes off Beth's reactions and began to circle the nipple, causing Beth to shake a little. She clenched to Laney's leg a little tighter, muttering something about how cold it was, and pulled a blanket over herself, concealling the events below. Laney continued to stare intently at the movie, all while playing with Beth's breasts and being taunted below. It seemed perfect and no one suspected a thing, except Melody. She looked every once in a while to see what was happening in the movie, but for the most part kept her eyes on them. Watching. Waiting. As "A Whole New World" played, the foreplay had become almost unbearable. Laney needed release and couldn't hold it any longer. She removed her hand from down Beth's shirt and began to slide it down the front of her pants, which were unbuttoned and strangely already had a hand in them. She looked at Beth and realized that they were thinking the same thing, and slowly Beth's hand moved from her own pants and back into Laney's, searching for the spot, while Laney's hand plunged into Beth's pants and found it right away. The panties she'd been wearing were soaked and now, so was her hand. She slowly began to wiggle her finger over the clitoris causing Beth to shake a little and move her finger a little faster. Beth was very satisfied with the movie being loud, so much that she sighed a little. Laney knew it wouldn't take long to make her cum, but as she felt it rising in her, she let out a laugh at funny part in the movie so it didn't look like she wasn't paying attention or having an orgasm. It's worked brilliantly, as everyone laughed with her, Beth was shaking so hard and let out a hardy laugh drenching her panties even more and cumming all over Laney's hand, while Laney was doing the same. They laid there and remained silent for a couple of minutes, holding and caressing hands. As the movie came to an end Laney decided that instead of staying another night, she would return home, making up an excuse to leave, like forgetting about a relative coming to visit. She stood up and made her announcement, apologizing for having to leave so early. But as she saw the look in Beth's eyes, she knew that Beth felt like it was her fault for Laney leaving so soon. She grabbed the rest of her stuff and headed towards the back door in the kitchen which led to the parking area. Melody seemed upset and began rewinding the tape, saying goodbye as she turned around towards the door. Beth followed Laney into the kitchen, kissing her as the reached a safe point, and Laney assured her that nothing she did was wrong, and that she needed some time to think about what had happened. As they broke their embrace, Melody turned the corner and confronted them both. "What are you doing?" "Nothing." Laney replied. "It's not nothing, it's something. I saw everything. What, do you think you're in love?" That hurt Laney. Melody was upset, but her best friend should've been able to except her the way that she was, not for what she was doing. She couldn't help but love Beth, but it happened that way and there was nothing she could do about it now. "I don't know Melody. I just don't know." Melody replied, "Well, are you in love with her, Beth?" Beth's reaction was the same as her first disclosure, unsure about the answer. "Well, it looks like both of you don't know much of nothing." They stood there for a couple of seconds and Laney spoke up. "Melody, we experienced something that felt a lot like love and now I think I should leave. I don't want to cause any trouble and I think you need a night or so to cool down. I wanted to talk to you about this, but I was afraid of what you might think. And I think I got my answer. I don't want to lose you as a friend, but if you can't except me for who I am..." she trailed off. Melody apparently took offense to the reason she was upset. She immediately corrected Laney, "It's not because you're a lesbian that I'm mad, it's because it's my sister that you're fuckin' with." Laney apologized, and walked out the door. Beth ran after her and walked with her to the car, holding hands and talking about seeing each other later in the week at school. She started her car, kissed Beth goodnight, and drove away into the darkness. Arriving at school on Monday morning, she noticed the faculty acting oddly and no sign of Beth or Melody until Art Class when Melody walked in the room, grabbed her supplies and sat as far away from her as possible. She seemed to be glaring at her from a distance, and finally she walked towards her trying to get a word in before all hell broke loose. But it failed miserably when she raised her hand and asked to go to the restroom. She immediately got up and walked out the door, leaving everything laying out. She'll be back, Laney thought, to put her stuff up and get her bag. She sat down and began finishing the art project in front of her. Beth's figure still danced in front of her, but the image was clouded by fear and dissapointment. Five minutes remained when Melody came back, she sat down without talking and began drawing in silence. When the bell rang, they both stood up and began putting their supplies back in the storage closet, and headed for the door. "Look, we need to talk sometime. How about now?" Melody nodded and walked towards the lunch room with her. They sat down without getting anything to eat. And Melody glared at her until she broke the silence with a question. "Why can't you except the fact that I might love Beth?" "Cause you can't be in love with girls, especially my sister. What do you know about love anyways?" This caused an emotionally void in Laney's response. "I know that if you were to tell me that you were in love, I would except him or her with open arms. Why can't you feel the same way? We are supposed to be friends." "Yeah, but I don't have to like you right now. I have priorities and obligations to my family first. And my sister's life is my business. I have to protect her." Melody stood up and walked away from the conversation before it was resolved. Laney just stared at the floor before getting up and walking in the other direction towards the gym. She arrived and sat in the bleachers alone until the first bell, collecting her thoughts. Coach Avery emerged from her office looking a little uneasy about something and walked over to Laney, asking her to come talk to her in the office. Laney followed her into the room to discover a group of people waiting there as well, including the principal and two other teachers. They all seemed worried about the same thing because as soon as she entered the room, the ceased the conversation and began to stare at her. The principal initiated the dialogue by explaining the reason for this conference, starting with a call he had recieved from Melody and Beth's mother. Apparently she had been convinced that Laney was a lesbian and shouldn't be allowed to dress with the other girls in gym class including her daughters. The faculty had never enforced a dressing room chart, but after two hours they decided that Laney would have to dress after all the other's were done and that she would be allotted ten minutes to get to the next class. It was almost more embarrassing than everyone knowing she was a lesbian. She felt her heart breaking inside of her chest and more from the fact that the woman she'd admired for three years couldn't understand her loving her daughter. She waited until the last bell rang and walked into the gym, not dressing out and sat on the top bleacher away from the entire class. She didn't even want to look at Melody, and really didn't feel like playing basketball anyways. Coach Avery didn't even say anything about her not dressing out she just marked her on attendence and walked away. Thinking about all the pain she would have to endure for the next year at school, nothing matched the pain of losing her first love and best friend at the same time. The bell rang and she walked to the office, opening the door and asked to speak to the principal once more, explaining it was something about needing to leave for the day due to being sick and throwing up. The secretary told her just to go and not worry about talking to him. It wouldn't surprise her if all the faculty knew her dirty secret and she turned around and walked out the door without even signing a thing. As she walked out to the parking lot, she saw Beth walking towards her with tear stained eyes and stopped and waited for her to catch up. They looked at each other for a second before Beth began to speak about what had happened, and after coming to the conclusion that Melody had told her parents about the events that took place on the couch. Laney asked her to call her when she could and they could talk about it more. Beth nodded, and sobbed saying," I'm so sorry Laney, so sorry." Beth never called Laney and she began to wonder what was going on over at their house. Deciding to drive over there, she arrived only to have a shotgun pointed in her face by their father and was told to get off the property. She complied and as she left she saw a glimpse of Beth from the front of the house facing the road. Her eyes were puffy, and she waved as Laney drove off. The next day at school was followed exactly to the schedule and she waited behind to get dressed out for gym and never speaking to Melody. The days continued and she kept to herself, getting dressed alone and waiting for the others to get done. One of the girls asked her why she was waiting till everyone got done dressing before coming in. Laney told her and the rest of the girls the story during a gym class while the teacher was away. She didn't use names, but she stared at Melody through the whole story, making sure she heard. After they had heard the heart crushing story, a few girls decided to make a statement by staying after and dressing with her in the locker room. She was never allowed to talk to Beth again. And that's the saddest ending, but it's also the truth. Sorry about the sad ending, but that's life. Sometimes we need to remember how we got to be the way that we are. I thought I'd share this story with everyone so that we could all return to real life and not stay in a fantasy land. Email me if you have any questions or comments.
