Prologue


Gabriel lives in New York City and grew up in Manhattan's Upper East Side.
His dad had died in a fatal car crash when he was still a baby so it's

her career and worked a lot, maybe that was her way to get over the loss
of her beloved husband. She also wanted to give her son all the best
possibilities for his future and spent a lot of money in his education and
also for his after school caring. During the week Gabriel saw only his
nannies because his mum left for work early and when she arrived back
home, Gabriel was mostly already asleep. Only on some weekends they'd
spent some time together.

Gabriel felt sad about it, also that he had to get used to nanny after
nanny since the fluctuation was very high. Most nannies stayed only a few
months before they left them for a better job. Sometimes they quit their
job from one day to another, and in those cases his mum asked Nathan, the
guy from the apartment next door, to watch after him. Nathan is a medical
assistant to Dr. David Brown, an internist in Downtown Manhattan. Gabriel
knows him as long as he can remember, and many times on weekends when his
mum had to work, Nathan offered to keep an eye on him. Nathan took Gabriel
to the movies or went with him to a water park on Long Island. They had
always a lot of fun together and Gabriel enjoyed spending his time with
Nathan.

Then, after another nanny had quit her job, Nathan offered to help again.
Gabriel's mum was very thankful about this since her son was getting along
with Nathan so well. Nathan talked with his boss to reduce his working
hours so they matched with Gabriel's school periods. On the way to his
work, Nathan dropped Gabriel at school in the mornings and picked him up
on the way back home in the late afternoons. For Gabriel, Nathan was way
better than any nanny he'd ever had. He helped him with his homework an
even Gabriel's school grades got better and better due to Nathan's help.

During summer breaks his mum usually sent Gabriel to summer camps
somewhere in New Jersey or Pennsylvania, sometimes they went on a little
vacation to Long Beach before summer camp, but only for a week or so.
Gabriel's mum is such a workaholic, she can't stay away from her work any
longer than seven days. Gabriel hated those summer camps, sleeping in a
dorm room with a bunch of boys wasn't even the worst thing for him.
Gabriel never got along well with strangers and when he finally got used
to the other kids the summer camp was over and he never saw any of them
ever again.

Gabriel's mum always felt sad about it but she needed some professionals
who watched after her son while she was working. The summer when Gabriel
was nine, everything changed. His mum and Nathan had a little small talk a
few days before summer break and Nathan told her that he's going to help
out on a friend's farm over the summer on the country side in New Jersey
like he does almost every year. Gabriel's mum begged him to take Gabriel
with him since they got along so well. Nathan told them that it wouldn't
be a vacation and that Gabriel would have to help out on the farm as well,
but Gabriel got thrilled by the idea and begged to come with him, too.

Nathan liked the idea and talked with his boss who's also the owner of the
farm and at least he had to give his approval for accommodating a kid.
Nathan arranged a meeting with his boss so Gabriel's mum and he got to
know each other. Gabriel's mum was very impressed of David, a kind, smart
and wealthy man, and she felt that her son would be in good hands. David
explained that it was more or less a coincidence how he got to own a farm.
Some years before he was looking for someone who would care about his
horses during the week when he's working and Nathan told him about a
farmer in New Jersey who's about to give up his farm because he ran out of
money due to the agronomical crisis. David offered to help and bought the
farm so the farmer wouldn't lose it and in return the farmer cares about
his horses.


Chapter One -- Learning Farming On The Green Wood Farm


Gabriel couldn't wait until summer break but finally the day came. On
Saturday morning after last day of school David picked up Nathan and
Gabriel, and together they left Manhattan heading for Sussex County in New
Jersey. Gabriel was so happy to spend a few weeks with them and as David
steered his SUV over the Washington Bridge Gabriel said in a sing-sang
voice:

"Bye, bye, New York! See you later! But not too soon!" He looked out of
the window and winked. Then he asked David "How long will it take to get
there?"

"A little bit more than one and a half hours." David replied.

"How many horses do you have there?" Gabriel wanted to know.

"Four." David said. "All stallions."

"You mean they're all boys?"

David chuckled "Well, if you like to say so, East Wind is about your age."

"East Wind?"

"David's black stallion." Nathan said.

"Uh-huh... and what's the other's names?" Gabriel wanted to know.

"Kiwi, Crin Blanc and Artax."

"Artax? Like Atreyu's horse in The Neverending Story?"

"Yes! He looks pretty much like Atreyu's horse in the movie!" David said.

"Cool!" Gabriel said exited. "I can't wait to see them!"

"You'll get to see them and all the other animals soon!" David said.

"What else do you have there?"

"Lots of them. I don't know really."

"But the farm belongs to you! How come you don't know?"

"Well, I'm the owner, yes, but Kevin is running the farm. I don't know
much about farming, I only give the money!" David said. "Nathan knows this
way better than me!"

"Well," Nathan chuckled, "they have cows, calfs and cattles, goats and
sheeps, chickens, two dogs named Buzz and Zephyr and also a very old
donkey named Willem."

"Willem? A funny name." Gabriel said.

"Well, yes, Kevin, the farmer named him after his dad, Willem Greenwood,
because the donkey is as stubborn as him." Nathan said chuckling.

"Okay?" Gabriel giggled.

"You know, I grew up there," Nathan explained, "and I know Kevin since he
was born. Their farm was just across the street back then before they had
built a new and bigger one outside the village. Almost every kid from the
neighborhood helped out at their farm in summers."

"Sounds like you've had a lot of fun back then."

"Yah, but it also was hard work." Nathan said. "You'll see soon when Kevin
gives you your chores!"

"Hum... okay? I hope I'm able to do them!"

"Don't worry!" Nathan said. "We're there, too!"

They chatted some more on the way about the chores which had to be done on
the farm and such, but after they'd left the interstate near Riverdale
Gabriel was looking out of the window most of the time enjoying to watch
the landscape of New Jersey's country side. Just before they reached
Sussex David turned on a dusty country road and after ten minutes or so
they reached a huge gate signed with GREEN WOOD FARM in huge letters.
Beside the gate was a code lock. David gave in a code and the gate opened.

"Time to get rid of this!" Nathan said as he opened his seat belt to pull
off his t-shirt.

"You never can wait, can you?" David chuckled.

"What are you doing?" Gabriel asked as Nathan opened his pants and pushed
them down.

"Oh, well, you know, on the Green Wood Farm clothing is optional!" Nathan
said.

"Really?" Gabriel asked excited.

"Yeah!" David said and stopped the car in the middle of the forest. "Let's
do something extraordinary! Something you can't do in the city!"

David got out of the car and started to undress. Nathan was already naked
and threw his clothes on the rear seat right beside Gabriel. Then he put
his shoes back on and got out of the car, too. The two men hoped that the

When they were done with peeing David said "Okay, let's go!" and then he
added chuckling "Gabriel, be sure you've shaken the last drops off your
willie properly before you get in the car!"

back into the car. They were driving another few minutes through woods,

"BUZZ! My old friend!" Nathan said as he came closer. "Come on, leave him

The dog let go of Gabriel and jumped up Nathan's body and seemed to be
happy to see him. Nathan stroked him but as Gabriel tried to get up and
turned his ass to the dog, Buzz jumped on his back and started to hump

Suddenly they heard a deep voice coming from behind them saying "You've
made it finally!"

"Kevin! Hi!" Nathan said and hugged the muscular man tightly before David
did the same.

"Hi boss!" Kevin said chuckling.

"Nah!" David chuckled back. "You're the boss, I'm only the backer!" And
then he turned to me. "Gabriel, this is Kevin Greenwood. Kevin, meet
Gabriel!"

"Hi Gabriel!" Kevin said smiling. "Welcome to the Green Wood Farm! It's a
pleasure to finally meet you!"

As Kevin stepped forward and stretched out his hand Gabriel noticed that
except work booths and a heavy leather apron Kevin wasn't wearing anything
else.

"Uhm... thank you?" Gabriel said shyly shaking Kevin's hand. "The pl...

It was kind of weird to be naked and greet a stranger. While the men did

a shelter where the forge was. Kevin took four horse shoes, nails and a
hammer and then they walked to a huge stable. Kevin opened a stable box on

"Hey, my big boy!" David said stroking the horses head. "Did you miss me?"

The horse snorted and rubbed his head on David's chest. It looked like as
if they both loved each other. David stroked East Wind's long neck and the
horse seemed to enjoy this a lot.

"Come here!" David said to Gabriel who was hiding behind the stable door.
"Let's see if he likes you!" Terrified Gabriel stepped closer. "Let him
sniff on your hand!" David said.

Gabriel carefully stretched his hand out to the horse's nostrils and East
Wind sniffed on it. The horse snorted before it neighed loudly.

"WOAH!" Gabriel shouted scarily and stepped back.

"Don't show any fear!" David said. "He's a little bit idiosyncratic, he
has his own mind, but that's why I love him so much!"

Gabriel tried to be as cool as he could and stepped forward again. The
horse's head bent down to him, snorted again and then poked Gabriel in his
belly with his mouth.

"Hey, he likes you!" Kevin cheered. "Stroke his head!"

Gabriel stroked the horse's cheek and suddenly East Wind turned his head
and rubbed it up and down on Gabriel's chest and belly. Gabriel giggled
and stroked East Wind's head some more. The ice was broken.

Kevin reached in the side pocket of his apron, took out some pieces of
sugar, handed them to Gabriel and said "Here, give him this and you'll be
his very best friend!"

Gabriel held the sugar under East Wind's mouth and the horse instantly
lapped it up. The horse neighed and poked Gabriel with his mouth over and

"Wow!" Gabriel said. "He's nice!"

"Okay, now that you've made a friend here your task is to calm him while

"Doesn't it hurt?" Gabriel asked.

"No. There are no nerves in the horn of the hoofs." David explained. "Only
if Kevin misses the right spots for the nails, but then East Wind would
have already kicked his balls!" He chuckled.

"Like he did with you when you tried to shoe him!" Kevin giggled.

"Don't remind me to that!" David said. "That's why you're doing it!" he
chuckled.

It didn't take long and East Wind stood with his hoofs in four new forged
shoes.

"Okay, let's walk him to the paddock, he needs some run!" Kevin said. "He
wasn't outside yet today!"

"Would you like to lead him?" David asked.

"Oh, uhm... what should I do?" Gabriel asked.

"Speak to him." David said. "Then grab the headgear and lead the way!"

"Uhm... Okay!" Gabriel stroked the horse's cheek and looked him in his eyes.
"East Wind? Come on! Follow me!"

Gabriel walked to the door holding the horse's headgear and the horse
followed him slowly. Kevin passed them and led the way since Gabriel
didn't know where the paddock was.

When they arrived there Kevin opened the gate to the paddock and Gabriel
led the horse inside. East Wind instantly started to gallop around the
paddock while the three men and Gabriel watched him from outside. Gabriel
stepped on the wooden fence to see him better.

"Can I ride on him?" Gabriel asked.

"Have you ever ridden a horse before, city boy?" Kevin asked.

"Uhm... no?"

"Then that's no good idea for two reasons," Kevin said, "First you have to
learn how to ride, and second: the only one who can ride him is David.
He's just as stubborn as his owner!" he chuckled teasing David.

"Hey, you wanna tell me that I'm stubborn?" David giggled and slapped
Kevin on his bare ass. "I'll try to forget this when I sign your next
check!"

"East Wind has never accepted a stranger so fast like Gabriel!" Nathan
said. "Maybe he can give it a try if you lead East Wind, David!"

"Really?" Gabriel asked excited. "So?"

"I don't think it's a good idea!" David said. "But try to call him! Let's
see if he trusts you enough!"

"East Wind!" Gabriel shouted. "East Wind! Come here!"

Slowly the horse walked in their direction. Kevin handed Gabriel some more
pieces of sugar and as Gabriel fed it to the horse he stroked his neck.

"Didn't I say you shouldn't fed him so much sugar?" David asked Kevin.

"Then tell me how else I should gain his trust when you're not around!"
Kevin replied.

The men watched how Gabriel stroked East Wind for while and then Gabriel
asked smiling "Good horse! Would you let me ride on you?"

East Wind sniffed on Gabriel's hand and arm as he stroked him but then
East Wind suddenly poked him so hard on his chest that Gabriel dropped
down from the fence and landed on his butt on the dirty ground. East Wind
jumped up and neighed furiously as if he was laughing about Gabriel.

"Hey! What was that for?" Gabriel asked as he got up and wiped the dust

"I would consider this as a NO!" Kevin said laughing. "Okay, aren't you
guys hungry?" Kevin asked.

"I would like to see the other horses, too!" Gabriel said.

"Okay, then let's go to the other paddock over there." Kevin said and led
the way. "And then we'll go to the house to have lunch!"

They passed some trees behind the horse stables until they reached a way
huger paddock where the other three horses were. As they noticed David all
of them walked closer to them to the fence.

"Why they are not together with East Wind?" Gabriel wanted to know.

"As I said, East Wind is a bit special and he doesn't get along with the
other stallions so he has his own paddock."

"Hey, my boys..." David said to his horses as they were close enough to
stroke them. "Did you miss me?"

Gabriel stroked the white horse with light brown mane and tail and said:
"This is surely Artax, right?"

"Yes! And this here," David said stroking a complete white horse, "is Crin
Blanc. It's a French name and means simply White Mane. I've found him on a
vacation in Quebec near Montreal, and this here," he was stroking the
light brown and smallest horse now, "this is Kiwi. He's the youngest and I
found him last year on my trip to New Zeeland. His mother didn't accept
him and the owner was about to give him to the slaughter so I bought him
to save him."

Gabriel stroked Kiwi and said "Oh hi, Kiwi! How could someone want to

"Well, maybe we should use Kiwi to give Gabriel riding lessons," Nathan
said, "since he's the tamest of all!"

"Oh yeah! Please!" Gabriel said excited stroking Kiwi's head. "Would you
let me ride on you?" The horse snorted and kind of nodded. "Woah, did he
understand me?"

"Maybe," David said. "Horses are very intelligent animals!"

"They're just beautiful!" Gabriel said stroking all three horses in turns.

"Okay, let's see what Nick has conjured for us!" Kevin said after a while.
"Louis and Steve should be back soon from the fields, too, so we can eat
all together!"

On the way to the farm house they walked through the other stables for the
cows, calfs, cattles, sheeps and goats but they were all empty. Kevin told
that the animals were all on different pastures somewhere around the farm.
 As they came closer to the backside of the farm house they heard another
dog barking.

"I see you've put Zephyr in the kennel?" Nathan said to Kevin.

"Yeah, you know how he can be!" Kevin replied. "I don't want Gabriel to
get bitten by him! You know, Gabriel, Zephyr can be really dangerous, he
doesn't like strangers, he needs time to get used to you. That's why I
locked him up, just in case."

"Ookay?" Gabriel said.

As they came closer Zephyr totally flipped out in the kennel. He was
snarling and barking with bared teeth.

"ZEPHYR! STOP!" Nathan said and opened the kennel without letting the dog
out, got inside and closed the door behind him.

The dog calmed down and seemed to be happy to see Nathan as he jumped up
on him, put his front legs on Nathan's shoulders and lapped through
Nathan's face. The dog was completely tame now. Only as Gabriel stepped
closer to the kennel the dog went berserk again and barked at him with
bared teeth again.

"WOAH!" Gabriel shouted stepping back a bit.

"I said STOP, ZEPHYR!" Nathan shouted at the dog.

Then suddenly Buzz got between Gabriel and the kennel and barked at Zephyr
as if he wanted to defend and protect the little boy.

Nathan got out of the kennel and said "Okay, let's go inside. Later we can
take a walk together so Zephyr gets used to you, Gabriel."

"Do we really have to?" Gabriel asked scared.

"Well, yes," Kevin said as they walked around the house, "I don't want to
keep him locked up as long as you stay here! Don't panic, he'll get used
to you, he got used to everybody who's a friend, he just needs some time.
He doesn't do any harm to any of us!"

When they were about to enter the farm house a tractor with a trailer full
of hay bales drove up in front of the house. Two muscular men stepped off
the tractor completely nude except the work boots they wore. Their bodies

and David by hugging them.

"Okay, let's get inside!" Kevin said. "I'm starving!" He said and led them
into a huge dining room with a table already set.

"Nick! We're here!" Kevin shouted into the attached kitchen.

"Okay! Just a second!" Someone yelled out of the kitchen.

A few moments later a guy wearing only a white chef's apron and hat came
out of the kitchen carrying a plate with roast beef and put it on the
middle of the table.

"Brother!" Nathan said and hugged the chef.

"You're here! Finally!" The chef said. "You must be Gabriel!" he said as
he turned to the little boy. "Welcome to the Green Wood Farm! I'm Nick,
Nathan's brother."

As Nick hugged him Gabriel asked "Does everyone here knows about me?"

All men laughed and then David said "Well, I had to inform them that we'll
have another guest!"

"Have a seat!" Nick said.

Along with the roast beef Nick dished out potato dumplings and red
cabbage. It was weird for Gabriel to sit down on a dining table completely
nude but it felt nice and since everyone was naked he slowly got used to
it. David said to do something extraordinary and this was very
extraordinary! Even Buzz was sitting in a corner of the dining room nearby
Nathan and waited that someone threw a piece of meat to him. It seemed he
was well trained, he only yelped from time to time as he was sitting and
waiting. As they were eating all the men were talking while Gabriel
remained silent and just listened.

"When does Cal arrive?" Nick asked.

"Next weekend." David said. "I'll pick him up at Newark Airport at Friday
night, and then I'll bring him here on Saturday."

"Why can't he just take a cab?" Nick asked.

"For what? I'm in New York anyway!" David said. "I can't close the
practice for such a long time!"

"Oh, our famous movie maker will come here?" Steve asked.

"Yeah!" Kevin said. "He said something about a secret movie project he's
working on for Ridley Scott. Something with wild living animals and he
asked us to help him to find some shooting locations. He said that our
