The following text is an account of a fictional academic research project set in the near future. It describes the schools on Isla Espiritu Santo, off southern California, and how a policy that required adolescent males to be nude both in school and out was implemented, from the very beginning to the current moment of writing (late 2027).

As such, it is a parody of an academic project. This series begins with a historical essay, and then moves to testimonies from boys, girls, teachers, parents, and members of the community. It will include a representative photographic collection with the full consent and awareness of those who are shown. Tags include: young, old, intergenerational, bi, gay, cfnm, cmnm, and gay incest. Although it depicts mandated behavior in some instances, there is no domination (Dom) in the usual sense of the term. If you enjoy this, you may contact the author at GavinRower2@protonmail.com The full series has already been written, and will continue to be posted.

MACK

Introduction: Mack (nickname; he requested that his real name not be published) is a public figure recognizable to almost anyone on island. He is the proprietor of a coffee and light food business in the town center and about two blocks from the public middle & high school. Mack is also served on the town council and in particular its public safety committee. He was once a certified EMT but has let that role lapse because he is so busy with other responsibilities. He has worked with the island's first responders in the few emergencies that the island has experienced.

Mack has worked on island since 2000 and moved to the island in 2005. Anyone seeking to gauge attitudes or viewpoints on island would do well to listen to Mack, who definitely has his own opinions but is also open to listening to those who disagree. With his overflowing good nature and energy, he is is widely respected as a fair and honest dealer, and has been asked to mediate disputes informally. This conversation has been edited for length and clarity.

Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to speak with me. How would you characterize your relationship with middle & high school students over the years?

We've had our ups and downs. The island's climate and weather allow or even encourage a lot of outdoor seating; we place has space for about eight tables indoors and another 30 on the our patio. We have umbrellas and magnolia trees for shade, and the patio is oriented to take advantage of the ocean or bay breezes.

Practical terms, this means a lot of informal outdoor seating; the customers bus their own tables. It works but requires attention, especially after school hours.

We're a favorite place for some students to come after school, either to socialize or do a little studying. I pushed for town-wide wifi when it first became feasible, so my place is popular with those who want to work or just check their phones as well. The middle school students can sometimes be a small problem, but they're still young enough respond very well to adult direction that's given in the right way. The high school students have been a problem on and off, more for congregating in a large group on one side, so that any other of my customers begin to feel out of place at that hour. They usually respond to my request to settle down or move on, but occasionally I have had to ask the high school principal to speak with them, either here or at the school.

We have these really nice benches built into the patio for informal outdoor seating, and the high school students have always really liked them. Some are over to the side, a little less visible from the street, and I find a lot of couples like that.

My particular interest is how the policy that requires middle and high school boys to attend nude was implemented and how it has worked out in the long run. Did this change in policy have in turn change any of students' behavior in your business?

Located where we are, we don't get so many Academy students, since it's a fair walk, but see some in the summer, because they live within easy walking distance, and we are in general on the way to the ferry dock. I think we had our first nude boy in later June 2022, a nice kid, very quiet, I had known him for years. I think he had already been living nude, as they say, for several weeks, so when he came in here with a couple of clothed friends, boys and girls, he was not at all embarrassed. A couple of my workers paused for a moment, but then, remembering that I had told them this would be happening, went right on. We saw some on most days for the rest of the summer, and then fewer because when the Academy is in session, most of them just go home or stay up there after school.

Were there any particular challenges with nude boys in your establishment?

The main challenge was legal, actually. The State health code mandates no shirt, no shoes, no service, as the sign goes. Well, the boys always had something on their feet, usually sandals, so that was no problem, but the shirt was. But that regulation is only binding when you're indoors. We got around it by requiring any nude boy to sit outside. During the pandemic, we made some changes so that we can sell at a counter to tables directly outside--that was how we stayed alive through the shutdown, and re-opened as outdoor seating only. This was an easy shift to make. The nude boys now always prefer to sit outside, anyway. If a boy comes inside the shop to buy something, we just ask him to put a towel over his shoulders. We'll count that as a shirt.

The policies were implemented with the hope of improving conduct and consideration between boys and girls, and especially the boys. Do you think boys' behavior in general is better now than it was, say, in 2022?

The pandemic years were really difficult for a lot of young people and children. They had been so isolated that I think some of their anti-social tendencies were came out even more as they returned to being together regularly. The thing with sexting and phones and fake videos started because boys were so bored at home, and then it took on a life of its own.

Parents expect a lot from the children here: good behavior, excellent grades. The demands of the peer groups were difficult, even extreme, and made all the worse by loneliness.

Most days of the week there are students who will buy a coffee or ice cream or something after school and hang out in our area, tables, and benches. That's fine, and in years past there was from time to time a clique that took over, or a particular group that became disruptive. I had to go out there and restore some good order, and occasionally had to tell one or two boys to leave and not come back, not welcome here until they were 18. Since the Fall of 2023 I have never had to do this, not once.

I think a nude boy is less likely to make trouble; he's enjoying himself too much, and often the attention on his body. They're each and every one of them the center of the universe, you know, to themselves, at least. I think that nudity has forced a lot of boys to slow down, enjoy life and their bodies, generally de-escalate. Teenagers have always had their drama, but I really do see that the boys' behavior in particular is less confrontation, competitive, and based on putting others down.

Have your other, usually older, clients and regulars objected to the nude boys?

I have to give it to the groups that engineered this whole change in town: they did their homework. No one was particularly surprised when the change was made. I think some older people were disconcerted at first by all that nude male flesh. Boys were exposing parts of themselves that never would have been permitted decades ago. Then the older customers and regulars certainly got used to it. Most of them have always come here mostly in the mornings, and cleared out before school let out for the day, and that continues. The boys have become much more considerate of the older people on island, I must say. There's something very endearing about watching a strong nude teenager carrying shopping bags for an older lady, both of them chatting and walking down the lanes.

How did the town government handle the change?

I was on council in 2023 and 2024. We went over all the town regulations to make sure that the boys would not be breaking any of them inadvertently, and making changes as necessary. A lot of so-called decency and order enforcement is left to local governments, so we were on our own, and that was just fine. Still is, in my book. We made a few alterations here and there, and I know that some regulations were changed for the town-school pool, and the town tennis courts. I understand the tennis clubs followed up. The ferry company wouldn't and really couldn't budge, not with Federal and State regulations.

I was also on the Public Safety Committee. We made sure that the Public Safety director and community safety officers understood the new policy, that nude boys were not only permitted but encouraged, and that behavior that was out of bounds before the change was still out of bounds --no harassment, intimidation, or threatening behavior. We hardly have crime on the island to speak of, and a lot of things reported missing have in fact been borrowed without the owner's permission, and re-appear eventually.

We were worried about an influx of news reporters or outsiders to the island when the public school made the change, but that never happened. I think they take one look at the 44-minute ride across the bay, or probably 50 minutes or an hour to drive around out here from the city center, and they just said skip it. Photographers do show up, both photojournalists and documentary or artistic, and we let them be as long as they don't bother the boys, and as long as they get proper releases from the responsible parties. Otherwise, trouble from off the island never really occurred. We also worried about an influx down at the beach, but that didn't happen either.

The one time since the change that we have had to coordinate our first responders with off-island first responders --a private plane went down over the state natural area and a pilot lost his life--we were sure to let those off-island first responders know about local customs, and they never made a fuss. No nude boys were involved, of course, but some did stand around, and it did attract something of a crowd, since so little happens out here.

Do you wish to add anything more?

Thanks for speaking with me, I appreciate your time, as well. I've always wondered: aren't the boys cold sometimes? I mean, depending on the season, it can get as low as 60 here, and when that wind is up, that can be cold. I asked a boy just last week, maybe 13 years old, who was sitting outside here with a coffee on a cooler morning: aren't you cold? Nude, sandals, and a hat and dark glasses. He just smiled, and said, "you get used to it. It's the way to live, really. Clothes start to feel itchy, like I'm surrounded by curtains. Maybe at first I was cold, but it's been so long that I don't notice it."

I asked him, "how long have you been living nude?"

"Since I was in 2nd grade," he said, "when I was 7. I just live nude the way you just put on clothes."
