There will be many slow times in this story, just like there are in life. Other
times, things will fly at you too fast. There will be boring days, and exciting

Here is the house

modified it to fit my dream, but this is what gave me the idea of the general
layout.

That night, Derrick slept in my arms. My mates and I had made love after everyone left our room, and he had joined us, exploring his likes and dislikes in a loving environment. When we woke, we all showered and went to breakfast to find the whole house in the kitchen. Derrick looked up and asked.
"Do I have to go to college to work for you Dad?"
"Mike told me about your conversation, so you know the answer is no, if you can
do the job. I don't care about your schooling, but
what if you want to work somewhere else?"
He rolled his eyes "Really? We both know I'm going to
work in the family for centuries."
We all looked at him "Did someone change you while I wasn't looking?"
"No Dad. You know no one would do that, geesh. I know
it's going to happen, I just don't know if I'm ready
yet, that's all."
"There's no rush, but back to your first question. What are
you thinking? You want to ignore school and have Mike teach you what you need
to know to work with him?"
"Yeah, I liked finding the problems in those contracts. It felt like I was a
detective or something. And the adoption things we talked about made me think
about options outside the human courts."
"Why do that Derrick? You're not gonna be a lawyer, you're gonna run Dad's
McDonalds." Morgan asked, through a mouthful of pancakes.
Now we were all looking at Morgan. "Explain" I said.
"I don't know Dad. All I know is I see Derrick in the office
that runs all the McDonalds you have."
"That's on the same floor as Mike's office Morgan, are you sure you're not
confused?"
Morgan shook his head. "No, he's got his own office, like yours. He doesn't need anything more from Uncle Mike, send him with
Josh."
Josh said "Why not? He was a natural with contracts, see what he does with
business."
"What do you think Derrick? You said you liked working with
Mike, do you want to explore some other things? I'm
also concerned about your future. If you change your mind and try to find work
outside our world, you won't have an education. Stopping
school now could ruin your life. You're supposed to
take those tests with Dr Phillips today, right?"
"Yeah, first thing today. You know I'll do whatever you think is best Dad, but
I know I'm not leaving you, ever."
"Let me think about it ok? For now, go take your tests. And do me a favor? Take the aptitude tests too. Between what Morgan just said, and my gut feelings, I'm curious to see what they find."
"You want to see where else my talents lie? Or are you stalling
to think through things?"
"Both honestly. And if I'm being honest, you realizing both angles weighs in on my thinking. You have amazing insight
considering your life up to this point. I'm curious, have you ever had
premonitions like Morgan?"
"I sometimes get a feeling when I'm faced with choices, if that's what you
mean?"
"Anything recent?"
"The day you found us, there were several. When we decided
to walk up that road instead of continue the way we were headed. When you sent
Lucas away and I had the chance to run. When you offered us the chance to stay."
"So you are here because of your intuitions? Interesting. Finish your breakfast
then all you pups get ready for school. Let's see what
the tests say before we decide anything ok? Morgan, any other things you've
seen that I should know about?"
He blushed and looked at the floor as he said "No Dad." My gut told me I should explore his non-answer, but not right now.
"Ok buddy, off to school." All the pups gave me a hug and headed to get dressed as Billy and I headed to the office. We spent the morning with Mom, Bea, and Scott, going over the funeral arrangements they had made. Scott had booked every available hotel room in Butler for guests from out of town and Bea booked Regent's entire fleet for moving those guests around. Cremation was the standard with vampires, so we didn't need a body. I had Billy phone the other 8 Princes to find out who was attending and he told me Prince Yuan would like to speak to me.
"Prince Yuan, what can I do for you Sir?"
"I'm sorry to bother you at this time
Prince Warnick, but you asked my opinion on Alpha Fabre for the Council. Prince
Honda and I have both spoken to him, and we think you are making a wise
choice."
"I'm happy you feel that way. He and I share
businesses, and he is old enough to respect tradition. I know some would put a
pack member in that seat, but I don't want to seem like I'm playing favorites."
"I think that is wise.
After a few decades, we'll know you better. An opening
will come and we can all consider a pack member of yours. I'm
sure you understand."
"I do Prince Yuan. Thank you. Will I be seeing you this weekend?"
"Sadly no. I have commitments I cannot
change. I will burn incense and pray for your father's spirit on that day. We
will talk again soon, young Prince."
I disconnected and smiled. Now I had my spy on the Council.
Andrew knocked "Edward would like to speak to you Sire. Patrick and Amanda are also waiting to speak with you."
Edward came in and stood in front of my desk "Sarah and I
would like to refresh and have a pup Sire. I know you said we don't need permission, but with things so busy, we thought
we should check on when would be best to do it."
"I appreciate it, Edward. Please wait until after the funeral, then work with
Andrew and Billy to arrange everything you need."
"Thank you Sire. We'll let you know." As he left, Patrick and Amanda walked in.
I had told Billy to join us, so he was right behind them.
"Alpha, we're confused. You said there was a mate bond, but we don't feel anything different."
I turned to look at Billy. He looked to me and said "I'm sorry Greg, I didn't think to explain it to them. I'll take them to my office and explain."
"Before we go, we'd also like to refresh? Is that what you call it? Our only son died in Iraq and we'd like to have a child."
"I'll explain how to do that also Amanda. I'll
ask Donna to join us and we can talk about traditional mating ceremonies as
well."
"Thanks Billy. Sorry, I just can't call you `Dad' yet." Patrick said with a
grin.
Billy laughed "It's fine, maybe after you refresh it'll be easier. I'm not sure I'm ready to hear Grandpa yet either."
They were all laughing as they left and Joshua walked in.
"Chicago accepted my offer. We got all their dealerships for 10% less than I valued them. The only obstacle is our getting approved for the franchises, but the only one that was going to be an issue is Rolls."
"That's great, what else?" I asked.
"When I called Manhattan, I offered them 5% over, they countered at 7% so I
accepted that. We'll have several franchise approvals
to go through, the only ones we already have are Bentley and Porche. Bespoke in Jericho wants 15% over, and they're firm on that, so I wanted to talk to you. They have
Rolls, Bentley, and Lamborghini. Manhattan has those as well, but Jericho has
the location for the Hamptons."
"Buy them as well. Pushing for the franchises with two dealerships in play will
strengthen our hand. Do either own their real estate, or do they lease?"
"Already have offers on the real estate Greg, that's
the expensive part of the Manhattan deal, but I don't want leases. It won't put
pressure on either one though, both have relatively new 50
year leases,"
"Ok, let Derrick read over things as you go. I want to see
what his gut tells him. Is Mike lead on this?"
"No, Matt's lawyer, Don, has a firm in Manhattan. There are four of them, and they
can handle anything we need in New England."
"I should come to New York to meet the people there."
"No you shouldn't. You're their Alpha, you should have
them come to you."
"No, I only summon them if there's a problem. I'm just..."
Wait, does he think I'm the Alpha for New York City? "Josh? I always assumed
Matt's interests were simply business. You mean they consider me their Alpha?
Where else?"
"I really can't say Dad. I know every time I've spoken
to Don, he calls you Alpha Warnick, and it doesn't sound like he's just using
your title."
I was bordering on panic, realizing I had focused on Pittsburgh and left other vampires out in the cold. I've failed those I'm supposed to be caring for. I wasn't sure where to start, but I needed to fix this, and fix it fast. I was about to call Mike when Billy came running in.
"This is my fault Greg. Tommy will have the GLS out front to meet us in an hour. Ted's headed to New York to get Don and his partners. They'll land at the helipad at riverfront and Regent will bring them to your downtown office. Let's go get showered and dressed."
Scotty and Bea met us in our room, and I was glad they did. I was a mess. I've been selfishly enjoying a trip to Europe and Hawaii while vampires were looking to me for leadership. I had no idea how many or where, but I had a sick feeling in my stomach. I had the largest business interest among vampires in Chicago, New York, and all of New England. That implied I was the Alpha for all of this territory but I hadn't put that together, until now.
Scott and Bea were washing me, calming me "Babe, calm down.
They were ignored by Dad for years, you've been Alpha
for four months, once you start leading, they'll follow. And anything you do
will be an improvement."
Scott was right, but it didn't ease my guilt. I really should have asked Mike,
or George, or someone. Billy and I dressed and ran into Joshua in the foyer. We
got in the GLS and headed downtown. An hour later, we got out of the elevator
and went into Mike's office.
"Alpha, this is my fault. There is no excuse for my not
explaining all of this to you when you became Alpha and took over for James."
"There's enough blame to go around Mike. I won't deny that I'm frustrated that you didn't tell me, but
I should have thought of it, Billy or Dad should have told me, and George
should have told me. Now we need to figure out how to fix this, and we need to
move quickly. Billy, use Mike's office phone and get..."
I couldn't finish as Billy hit the speaker button on the phone and we heard
George on the line.
"I'm sorry Sire, I
should have told you this when you started taking care of your Pittsburgh pack.
I will submit myself to discipline later, for now I should fill you in. James
was Alpha for New York City as it grew from a small Dutch port to what it is
today. I hate to speak ill of the dead, but he hasn't
been a true pack Alpha for centuries. His focus has been on business since the
revolution. I honestly can't tell you what the
vampires have been doing, but I would imagine there are several illegal packs
caring for the vampires there."
"What about Boston and the rest of New England? And Chicago?"
"Same answer Sire.
Legally, any pack east of Albany and north of New York City is in your
territory. Same with Chicago."
"And the business in Seattle? Do I have a pack there?"
"Seattle has a legal Alpha but you have a
much larger business presence there. I would suggest a meeting with him, as
Alpha Warnick, to discuss matters in the Pacific Northwest."
"Make it happen Billy. Any advice on how to approach any
packs that have done what James should have been doing George? I certainly don't want to try to take over by force, the packs won't
follow."
"You don't need my advice Greg, you're a
natural. You have your priorities right, and you'll
gain their loyalty just like you did Pittsburgh."
"Alright, I hear what you're saying. Now, is there anything else you've forgotten? Do I have more packs anywhere else in the
world?"
"You found Zell. You'd
have to check with Albert, but I think most vampires in London that want a pack
are happy with the London Three. Now you know about these, I hope I'm not forgetting anything but I'll do my best to think
back through the last 300 years and let you know anything I come up with."
"Will I look stupid if I ask Alpha Rizzo if he knows of any packs I should be
caring for?"
"If you approach it right, explaining how
it happened, I think you'll gain his respect by asking."
"Thanks George. I think Don and his people are almost here, I'll talk to you
later." as I disconnected the call and stood. I led the way to the elevator
with Mike, Josh, and Billy following. When the doors opened, Morgan, Derrick,
Matt, and Dr. Phillips were there.
"Morgan came to me and said all of us needed to be with you
for this Greg. When I started to argue, Derrick asked me to go along with it,
so here we are. What's going on?"
We joined them in the elevator and headed for the top floor as I said "We'll
find out Dr., but yes, join us please."
We got out of the elevator and I headed to my office. I sent Billy to get Todd,
Leonard, and Johnny while everyone else followed me. I had just settled in my
chair as Sam walked in, followed by Billy and the others. I gave them a quick
rundown of why we were here and had just finished when the phone buzzed. Don
and the rest of his firm were here.
Billy opened the door and four vampires walked in, led by a
man that looked my age. He walked up to my desk with his eyes to the floor and
said "Alpha, you summoned us?"
"As you are speaking for your group, I assume you are Don Sullivan?"
"I am Sir. As of last year, Paul Giovani is the face of the firm when we deal
with humans," he said, as he pointed to a tall heavyset man in his 60's "but I
am the senior partner at the firm for those in our world."
"Through several miscommunications on the part of several of
my pack, I was unaware until a few hours ago, that I am the Alpha for New York,
and most of New England. Is this true?"
"I can only speak to the legalities under vampire laws Sir, but Alpha
James...forgive me for speaking ill of your deceased father, but he gave up on
the pack long ago and left us on our own. He continued his business interests
in the area, and Master Matthew, if you'll forgive me,
was never an Alpha, so his focus was on his businesses."
"First, please call me Greg. At least until we figure out if I truly am your
Alpha. As to my father's neglect, no one is denying that he abandoned those he
should have cared for. Honestly, I'm more concerned
about them. Is there someone that has stepped up and is caring for them? Or do
we need to take drastic actions to help them recover? If there is an Alpha, or
Alphas, that are caring for these vampires, I'm more
than happy to legitimize their positions. I can't imagine an area that large
has gone this long without someone taking a leadership role."
Paul looked to Don before he spoke "As far as I am
concerned, you are my Alpha, Sir, but I will respect your wishes. I know of six
illegal packs that have formed. One in each of the five boroughs, and one on
Long Island. If you like, I will reach out to them and get more information on
other areas."
"If you have phone numbers with you, call them now. I'd
like to meet them personally. Either as a group or individually, however they
want. Anyone know anything of New England?"
As Paul stepped back and made phone calls, Don said "Sire, if you'll have me, you are my Alpha. I heard that my brother
Marcus had evolved into an Alpha but, I haven't spoken
to him in a century. I can only assume his pack is in the Boston area."
"Is there bad blood between you? Or can you call him?"
"I will call him now Sir."
Paul looked to me "Sire, the six around New York would like to visit with you as a group. They all say they will work to fit your schedule. When and where should I set this up?"
"They should bring their families to meet us at home Dad."
said Morgan.
I was surprised he interrupted for this, but I asked "Including mates and pups
still at home, how many are there?"
"Fifteen Sir."
"If they would like, they can bring their families to our home as soon as
possible. They're welcome to stay until Sunday. I have
to be here Monday morning. Billy, work with Paul and Ted. Get details worked
out on getting them all here."
Don got my attention "Sire, my brother Marcus says he's been
expecting this call. He's heard what you're doing
here. He'd like to bring his wife and daughter this
evening, if you'll allow him?"
"Billy, get him here as fast as possible. Don, are you and your partners able
to stay a few days?" I stopped and turned to the other two, who hadn't spoken. "Before I ask that, do you two also see me as
your Alpha? There will be no repercussions if you say no, I'm sure you're professionals and can continue to work for Don."
Both turned and offered their necks saying "You are our Alpha, if you'll accept
us."
I nodded. "Then I'll find room for
you at our home for the weekend, or nearby. You can fly to New York when you
need to be there, but I'd like you here to help smooth
things out. Especially if you know any of these men personally. Billy, call
Andrew once you have names and families, so he can move people around to
accommodate as many at the house as possible. Leonard, does Andrew know which
of the houses are still free?"
Billy said "We'll make it work Greg. It's only for a few days. I'll get suites in Butler and we
can get cars from Regent if we need to."
Leonard had his phone out talking to Craig when Morgan said
"Todd will need to get you a space like this in New York Dad."
"An office space buddy?"
"That too, but we'll have 8 more schools by New Years. I'm
not sure where they are. I'll have to do without Aunt Liz cause her and Uncle
Matt will run the one that has bedrooms."
Matt looked at me confused. "Trust him Matt, whatever he
sees, you'll fit right in. We can sort it out once we meet with these Alphas.
Morgan, do you see anything about how it's going to
work out?"
"Eventually, everyone's gonna like you Dad, but there's a lot more than those.
Where's Bangor and New Haven?"
Matt's head snapped to stare at Morgan when he asked this, but I just grinned.
"Anything else?"
He blushed and looked down "Nothing I wanna talk about Dad."
I really needed to dig into that, but not now. "Billy? Who
will be here, and when?"
"Marcus and his family will be landing at Pittsburgh at 3. Ted is heading to
the house to get Clint, Mickey, and Amelia. She'll fly
Clint & Co to the Gulfstream to get the New York Alphas and their families.
They won't be in town until late. Do you want meet
with them tonight? Or wait until morning?"
"Depends on where they're staying Billy, we'll be flexible. Dr Phillips, I'd like you to join us for lunch tomorrow. Is there someone else who can finish Derrick's testing?"
"At the rate he's gone so far,
he'll be done the placement testing today. Do you need me for Marcus?"
"No, finish the tests, then join us for lunch."
"As you wish, Alpha." And he turned to lead Derrick and Morgan back to school. Matt looked at me, and I motioned for him to follow them.
Don spoke up "Alpha, er, Greg? Paul and I have moved our schedules around so we're free, but the other two have commitments they can't move. If it's alright with you, I'd like to send them back to New York now?"
"Our pack tends to be naked at home, but I doubt everyone will feel the same. Amelia can take you all to New York then you and Paul can return with the Alphas, or she can wait for you."
"There's a lot to catch you up on Greg. I don't mind nudity, so if it's ok with you, I'll stay?" Don said.
Paul added "I'm fine with nudity as well, but we both keep a bag in the office. If your pilot can wait 45 minutes in New York, I'll return this afternoon Sir."
I nodded my agreement to both of them, "Tommy, take these three to meet Amelia at the airport. Call her so she knows to stay there after she drops Clint & Co."
Tommy started to lead them out as Sam spoke up. "Greg, I'd like to take Shane,
Brian and Tanya to New York. Hit the streets and get a feel for how many young
vampires are out there on their own."
"Sounds good, Sam, can you go with them or do you need more time?"
"I'll call them and they can meet us at the airport. We'll
be back Saturday in time for the funeral." And he headed out as well.
I turned to Josh. "I'm not sure, but I think we're going to need to discuss
changes in the business structure. If I'm Alpha for
every vampire from New York City to Bangor, Maine, plus Chicago, I'm going to
have to devote my time to that. When you add in the Serving Alphas in Ohio,
Buffalo, North Carolina, and California. Technically, all those are my pack
members as well."
"You were just named CEO, if you change that too soon, it will cause concern
among the lower levels. But we can all handle business issues so you can deal
with the packs."
"You're right Josh. You'll have to
step up. For now, on paper you're still just over the
automotive, but keep your eyes open for someone to step up into that so I can
have you ready to handle all the business. Todd, will you have a problem answering
to Josh?"
"No problems Greg, Should I start looking for space in Manhattan?"
"And a boarding school in New Haven, if I understood Morgan
right?" Billy added.
"Yes to Manhattan, but just office space. See if there is a boarding school
that is on the market. If something jumps out at you, grab it. Otherwise, we'll develop it ourselves. Also look at schools or churches
for sale in New York, Boston, and Chicago. Don't buy
anything yet, just get a feel for the market. I want to see what these Alphas
have already in place."
Don interrupted, "If I may, you already own the building
we're in Sir. There is space there you could use."
"Look into it Todd, take Leonard and Johnny with you.
I'd like you on it before the weekend." Todd nodded as he, Leonard, and Johnny
headed to Todd's office.
I turned to Mike "You're my primary lawyer, for personal, business, and pack.
If you need to add someone to handle things here, do it. If you need to get
licensed in other states, please do it. I don't want
to be trying to keep track of who to talk to depending on where the issue is.
Don can work through you on everything from now on." I turned to Don, "Will you
or your people have an issue with that?"
Before he could reply, Mike spoke up "For pack and personal issues I agree
Greg, but on business issues, they can continue to handle everything like they
have in the past. They know their state laws better than I do and it would take
years for me to catch up. If Josh is overseeing the businesses, he'll know who to talk to based on
where it is."
Don was nodding his head, agreeing with Mike, so I said "Handle it how you want
Mike. All I'm saying is, when I have a legal question,
I'm calling you. How you pass it around is up to you."
They both said "Understood Alpha."
"What can you tell me about your brother? Marcus, is it?"
"Yes, Marcus. I haven't talked to him since he came
back from France after the war. He and our father fought in World War one. Dad
died in France, and Marcus came home to care for our Mother until she died in
1922. He and I haven't spoken since then. There isn't anything bad between us, we just drifted apart. I
heard he phased into an Alpha, but I don't know any
details. I've never met his wife, or my niece."
"And what about you? Do you have a mate? Pups?"
"I should have explained that Greg, I'm sorry. Paul is
my mate, and you met our sons as well. We have a lesbian couple that we have
known for a while, and they agreed to give each of us a pup. Michael was born
in 1985, and Christopher came along in 94. They're
both in their first lives and neither is actively searching for a mate yet.
Christopher went to Yale, like Paul did. Michael didn't
want to go away from home, so he went to Columbia. Technically we have two
others, a boy 25 and a girl 24, but the girls kept and raised them."
"So you're not mated to their mothers, it was just a
surrogate arrangement? And feel free to say I'm
getting too personal, I'm just curious."
"It's fine. Jeanie and I grew up together and everyone swears we should've mated, but when I met Paul I knew he was my soulmate. Then Jeanie met Sandy, and we're good friends who have pups together. All the pups know the truth, our boys call them aunt, and their two call us uncle."
"I have a car from Regent downstairs Greg. I thought we
could go home for lunch? Unless we need to be here for anything else?"
"I think that's a good idea Billy. Don can meet
everyone and get comfortable before his brother gets here." So
we all headed down to the car, and on to the house.
