Date: Tue, 24 Mar 2020 00:09:29 +0000 (UTC) From: Mike Simmons Subject: It was always about the bets 108 I woke and altered my schedule and went to school and worked out. It was like that all week and dad must have sent out the word, LEAVE MIKE ALONE. By Wednesday I was caught up at school and going stir crazy. I called the office and got Ruth and said, I don't care what dad said, please email me the references, and their resume's these guys need to know, at this point it isn't fair. She said ok, Mike. I took a deep breath and said Ruth, I got your back. The email came immediately and I went to dads office and printed the information and started to make calls. I should have known better as the references were glowing, but only an idiot would give a bad reference. I was really struggling as I liked both guys and was leaning towards Mason. Then I looked at Dillon's resume more closely and saw a business major and a minor in accounting. I immediately picked up the phone and called him. We chatted a while well, I fired questions at him and finally asked if wanted to start in our accounting department and he said sure. I told him a formal offer would follow for 10k plus benefits and that there would be a drug test. He accepted, seemed pleased and excited and I hung up. The next call went to Mason, he answered and I fired different questions and satisfied with the answers offered him the PA job for 11k and benefits and expenses. He was also excited and I told him that the offer would be sent via mail and would include information on the drug test. He said thanks. Then I said, according to you high school football coach you can be a pain in the ass. He laughed and said that was not one of my references. I laughed and said it should have been. We talked a bit and finally I said congrats and I'll see you as soon as we get the drug test and oh by the way I'm a pain in the ass as well. He said, Mike I get that and hung up. A few minutes later Coach Conn called and said that he would be accompanying the dean. I said, Coach dump him at the office and you me and Jim can hang out and grab a bite to eat. He said sure but would you be willing to add JJ to the mix and I said sure. Coach, I'm good so no worries. He said thanks and hung up. I called Brian and told him about the hires and he said he would get all the information he needed from Ruth, I said thanks. I called Jim and asked if he was interested in hanging out with Coach Conn on Thursday evening. He asked, so Mike why is he here? I said to babysit the computer science dean as he meets with dad. Ok, Mike what the fuck is going on? Jim, CMU and VT are fighting over me and I get it on one level but I'm not playing D3 football and that's is that. Dad is negotiating credits and programs. Then I said, Jim coach also wants JJ there. He said fine, where we going? I said, Jim that's your choice. Mike, I'm being told about all this and you are not leveling with me about what's going on. Jim, that was the total truth so FUCK OFF and I hung up. I felt bad and called back and it went to voice mail, I simply said wingman please call. I called JJ and said Jim and I were meeting Coach Coon and he asked you join us Thursday evening. He said sure and I said we will firm that up tomorrow at lunch. As I was hanging up there was a call and it was Jim, I said, dude I'm sorry but that was the truth. He said, Mike I should not have accused you of holding back, I know that pisses you off. Jim, the complete story is that CMU is trying to recruit me for Comp. Science. I'm totally committed to VT for both. Dad is trying to work a deal that I can do part of both. I'm not permitted in the discussion, dads orders. Thanks Mike, so we could go to the club, sit in the bar so we don't stress their dress code again. Ok, Jim I'll call ahead and talk to the manager. Jim, JJ is good, I'm thinking three musketeers. Mike, I'm betting not. I laughed and said that's a bet. We hung up and I was just sitting there trying to remember what I forgot. Then it hit me Jorden. I called Jorden and he answered saying damn you are a busy dude. I said, I'm sorry dad has me on a very restricted work schedule. He said, well Mike this is complicated. Jodi and I want to leave the firm at the end of the month. We have a client and a nice size project. I took a deep breath and said, how does this effect the current project, you are lead architect, correct? Mike, I'm wondering if that was in the contract you signed with the firm? If it is then they need to pay me to continue or you could pull the firm. I said, Jorden let me talk with the legal people and I'll call you tomorrow night. He said great and we hung up. I immediately sent Tim and Brian an email and asked the question. My head was spinning and I called Jorden and asked how he was funding this move? He said a loan and an advance from the new client. I asked, would you consider being a subsidiary of Enterprises? He was quiet for a minute and then said, give me a couple of day and let me talk with Jodie. By the way her and Carrie really get along, I said great and hung up. Sitting there I remembered that Friday was Senior night for the hoop team. I called Rob and asked about Friday and he said that there were 2 seniors and one played a lot and the other when we were well ahead. I said, that the gang would be there and he said, please not the Tavern and I said, just let me know where. We talked about the women in our lives and school. He said that shit happens but the hoop team was the favorite to win the district. I said dude that's great but shit does happen, don't get hurt. He laughed and said good night. I set the alarm for a run as I have worked out every day and a run would be great. I showered and went to bed. Thankfully, I woke before the alarm and the run was fantastic. Then it was shower, shave and I looked at my hair and said to myself you are a mess, I went downstairs and dad was there drinking coffee. He said so by your dress you are taking the coach to the club? I said correct, filled my travel cup with coffee and left for school. Right before lunch, Jim, JJ and I were called to the AD's office and waiting on us was Coach Conn. I asked who was hungry and it was everyone. I said Coach Weston how about you drive Coach Conn to the club and we will all meet you there. Coach Weston said, Mike how in the hell we doing that dressed like this and JJ said, oh you should seem him in action, he runs the place. I laughed and said, not really and besides I have a reserved a room so we can be ourselves and no interruptions. JJ just shook his head. At the club the manager welcomed us and showed us to a small dining room and immediately Jake was there. He said Mike we are not doing the iced tea thing, please order what you want. I laughed and said what's the fun in that and the guys all laughed. I saw Coach Conn shake his head and I promptly ordered coffee and the others got the message and everything but iced tea was ordered and Jake was laughing. We ordered and Coach Conn was asking questions and I asked if they had gotten my squeaky clean drug test and he simply replied that they had. Once again JJ just looked. Then I said Coach Conn, they are there, buried very deep and he shook his head. Then he said, I'll find the damn things. Lunch orders were taken and they all looked at me when I ordered chicken salad. It was burgers and sandwiches for everyone else. Jack was back for drinks and I switched to iced tea and that's exactly what I got and even Coach Conn laughed. We were relaxed and talking and my phone rang and it was dad. He said that he would be at the Club with his two guests and should be polite and listen, I said yes, sir and hung up. I told everyone what was happening and said that Coach Conn should stay and that everyone else should do what they wanted. Then I said, Coach Weston let's you and I go for a walk and he said great idea. Outside, I started towards the golf course and was thanked for lunch and for letting Coach Conn deal with the minions. I asked, Coach is Jim a minion? He said, Mike the entire recruiting class is a minion compared to what they think of you. So Coach, why the drug test? He laughed and said to remind you who was in charge and I laughed saying well I'm always in charge. We walked three holes and headed back, talking about the team and where he thought we stacked up. I told him I hired the guy from USC and he said good, that asshole of a coach they have liked him but could not bring himself to say it. I said, well I like Mason and hope he can keep up, I'm not easy. So why you telling me something I already know? Back at the Club Jim was in a great mood and JJ was ecstatic as he had a formal offer. Coach Weston took the guys back leaving Coach Conn and me alone. He asked me what I hoped for and I said a Computer Science degree from VT and a masters from CMU in 4 years and he laughed out loud. I said, Coach I will get to school with at least a semester in the bank and summer courses at CMU transferred to you guys and it will be a full year. So I graduate in three and take graduates on line at CMU through your program. He said, so does that get us you for 4 years or will you turn pro after your junior year? I said, PRO football isn't happening and he said, Mike that will be what it is and we all think that you will have that option. I said Coach, I'm not putting my body through that and I don't need the money. I found Jake and ordered 2 beers and when they were delivered Coach said, thanks for the restraint earlier, it was noted and appreciated. We had just finished our drinks when dad arrived with the two deans in toe. I introduced my self to the VT guy, as I had not met him on the campus visit. Dad started by saying, Mike I think we have a program that would work for you as it works for me. I just sat them and the VT Dean said well first we need to see your transcripts, dad just looked at him and and I said, sir no you don't, if you would have bothered to look they are on file. He said well I haven't seen them and I very quietly said strike two and sat back in my chair. Coach Conn said Mike what's with that? I said Coach, strike one was a pretend hard class on the campus visit, strike two is the smug, ridiculous request for something he already has. He better hit a home run or Dean Chang will leave here a very happy man. Should we continue or do you need a word with your Dean? Then the Dean looked at me and started to say just who...... and I stormed out of the room and sat in the bar drinking iced tea. Dad came out and said, Mike we are leaving. I immediately picked up the phone and call the PG sports department told them who I was and said that I would be opening my recruiting. They asked for a reason and I said please call VT. Dad and I left for home. In the car I turned my phone off and at home I put on a jacket and sat outside. I have no idea how long I was out there but I heard the door open and dad yelled Michael James get in here. In dad's office was the Dean and Coach Conn. Coach Conn said, Mike the newspaper called and I understand you opened your recruiting, is that correct? I simply replied, YES. He asked, are we still in the mix? I said, not at this time, academics were always very important and I can't figure out how your Comp. Sci. Department is so highly regarded with that ass in charge. There was dead silence and I was determined not to say a word. As the silence continued, I got up and went to my room and threw myself on the bed. Totally pissed. A few minutes later Coach Conn knocked on the door. I invited him in and he asked, Mike is this for real or one of your games. I said Coach, I'm sorry but it's for real, unless you can explain how dad thought there was a plan and why your guy blew it up, yes the recruiting is open and no is should not effect Jim and I don't know JJ enough to give a fuck. He said, how about breakfast tomorrow and we try again, I said nope, I have school and I'm missing too much as it is. Have a pleasant trip to Blacksburg. He got up and left the room. A few minutes later dad knocked on the door asking if I was ok? I said, surprisingly so. He smiled and said you have never made a rash decision in your life, don't do it now. I said dad, we can talk tomorrow when you get home from work. However, I am going to the hoop game tomorrow night, unless it becomes a media circus. He just sat there and I turned on my phone and there were 7 voicemails all from VT. I tossed dad the phone and said please put that in the kitchen and I said good night. Dad left closing the door. The next morning I got up went for a run, looked at the sports page and thought Fuck, this will be a zoo. It was half a page about my feud with VT over academics. I thought that was either dad or the Major and I was betting on the Major. At school, I sat in the car, till the last moment and went to English as the bell was ringing. I wasn't there 5 minutes when Coach Weston came in saying he need me for a while. Walking to his office he said, Mike half the coaching staff and the Dean are in my office, they want to talk. I stopped and said Coach, please let me go to class. He looked at me and said, Michael it isn't that simple you need to meet with them and Nancy must have had 10 calls asking about your availability. I took a deep breath and said ok. Then I asked coach if he would ask Coach B and Coach Conn to meet me at the stadium, I want this conversation on my turf, so to speak. He said sure. I went and sat in the top row of the stadium and was soon joined by the coaches. Coach Conn said, Mike why here? I said if we were at home it would be in my office, here this is as close to an office as I have. I said, this is not a stunt, a game or anything else. At our first meeting, I told you that academics were the most important thing for me and that if I could do that and play football it would be a plus. I finally realize that it isn't possible to do what I want and play D1 football. Later today I will agree to a full length interview and tell everyone that football is not an option for me and that major college football and academics are in my mind not comparable. I thanked them for their time and got up and started to leave. Coach B said, Mike please sit for one more minute. I said, ok but this is not a rash decision and that I am not upset or even mad and I'm actually glad it was brought to my attention by that jerk that runs your department. He said, well don't you want to hear the program that was worked out? I looked at him, shook my head and said, NOPE and went back to school and History class. I skipped lunch and hung out in the Library. I was the last one in the room for the afternoon classes and the word must have been out as I was totally ignored. I signed out of last period and drove to the office, found Ruth and said, no calls please and that includes dad. I closed the door sat at the desk and made the trip to NC. At some point I opened my eyes and dad said, welcome back, how was the flight? I laughed and said very smooth. He said let's go and we got in his car and drove to Greentree. I had three beers and a giant sandwich and dad and I talked for a long time. I said, dad the real issue is that this business shit is more fun for me than football and I'm thinking I won't play next year either. Dad said, Mike please don't say that again till June. He then said, you are losing control and I'm not sure you don't know what you want. I talked with Major Messer and he is putting a lid on you with everyone, I said thanks and can we please go to the building? He said, sure and we got in the car. Traffic was a mess and when we got there work had stopped for the day. I walked around for a while with dad standing by the car. Back at the car, I said thanks can we please just go home. I looked at my phone and there were 19 voicemails and I had not talked with Carrie at all. I handed dad my phone and said please just take this. I'll ask for it back at some time, but no visitors, nothing at all. He said, Mike please call Dr. Jenkins and I said absolutely. I said, I guess I need my phone and he laughed. I called Dr. Jenkins and left a message that I really need to talk. I was daydreaming when dad stopped the car and I looked, I was at the doctor's office. Dad smiled and said, I had called ahead but wanted you to make the call. You were coming here no matter what. Your car will be here when you are finished. I went inside and Dr. Jenkins was sitting in the waiting room and said so the boy wonder is imploding? I laughed and said, nope changing directions. He smiled and said, let's make sure that's what you really want. We talked for well over an hour and he said that I needed to take my time with VT and mourn the loss of your brother. Then it hit me, I needed to get that done. I thanked the doctor, went outside and my car was there and I drove home. I called the Major and I asked if he could get a plane for Carrie and me and get as close to the outer banks as possible, Saturday? He thought for a minute and said yes. I said let me know the details. Back at home, I called Carrie and said, just listen you and I are taking a trip to NC on Saturday, it is not an overnight. I went in the office, found dad and told him I was dealing with Mom and Bill Saturday. Then I asked him to call the VT coaches and ask when we could talk and that he needed to be there. Dad, we will need to go there and I'm taking Carrie. He said damn you are a real pain in the ass. I looked at him and said this is all Bill's fault and my reaction to him. Dad laughed and said no shit. Upstairs in my room, I called Jim and we had a long talk and I was pleased as he was not upset at all. I explained everything and he said, thanks and that he was there for me. Then it was Carrie. I was expecting a lecture and got total support. We talked about the upcoming NC trip and what I was hoping to accomplish. She said, Mike don't accomplishment anything just let it be what it becomes. I laughed and said, I love you and good night.
