I pulled into the office parking lot and went for a walk around the
building. I was once again disgusted at the general condition and thought
well it will have to do but it will never be like this when we move into
the new building. Finally, I stuck my head in to say hello to dad and he
asked how I was feeling as I had called off sick? I said well golf was
fun and Cole was unreal as he shot 1 under from the tips. Dad said, well
that's great but that won't happen again. I said I get it but I needed
to be ready for tomorrow. He said, just so you understand and you need to
get going, you have a busy day, or haven't you looked at the calendar
yet? I said shit and went to my office and Ruth handed me a cup of coffee
and said, Mike people are waiting for you. I said, give me a minute and I
went in the office and pulled up my calandras. It was full and damn that
will teach to tell ever one I would be in. I was already running 15
minutes late so I went outside and asked Ruth to push Dr. Williams back
30 minutes and everyone else after him as well.


First on the list was Mason. I found him in the reception room and said,
ok let's go in my office. We both sat in the guest chairs and I got a
very detailed report on the status of  negotiations on the second floor
in the strip district. His recommendation was to move J & J and he was
aware that they wanted to move and might have a place selected. I said,
that would be great, if the space held the new people. He said it was
going to be close and Jodie was working on it and she seemed pissed about
things. I said, yup because they are not doing building 2. We talked
about their move and what was involved and I said, work out some details
and cost and let me know. He said thanks and said that he got it.


Next on the list was an interview for Masons position and I asked him to
hang around. I took a minute to review the resume and damn it was a
woman. He appeared to be 24 and just about to graduate from Pitt. She was
a business major and deans list. I asked Mason if he knew her and he said
no. I said thanks and said please stay in the building, just in case. I
called Ruth and asked her to send Riley in. Shortly there was a very
professionally dressed woman standing in my door. I got up shook a very
firm hand and offered her a seat. I sat beside her in the other gust
chair and asked. So Mz Carson, how did you hear about this position? She
said through an agency. I asked if she knew anyone who worked here and
she said that she did not. Then I asked what she knew about the company
and se replied, well which one? I laughed and said the one run by a
spoiled rich kid, with an ego and an attitude. She said, so Mr. Simmons
is that how you see your self? I said so how do you see me? She said only
what I see on TV and read in the papers and that was a very poor
description of yourself, or you have the entire county fulled. I said,
around here I am Mike and my dad is Mr. Simmons. So now Riley, please
answer the question, how do you see me. She said a very well put together
young guy, who can easily knock you into next week and then offer to help
you up. Just like you did with the local, police department. Ok, what
about the companies, start with Enterprises please. She thought for a
minute and said a developing multi faceted thing. I laughed and said yup.
What about Technologies? She said, a dynamic growing Technology company
with commercial and government ties and contracts.


Then I switched gears and asked about her schooling. She said, Catholic
High Schoo and then Pitt. Deans list every semester and graduating in
May, near the top of her class. I asked about outside interests and she
said, sports and her boyfriend. Then I asked about her goals? She said to
run a company. I said being my assistant was far from that and she
laughed and said, well I hear it is as close to the power in your various
companies as one can get. I asked if she had questions? She said that she
didn't. I said, Riley I don't waste my time with references but I will
have a very detailed vetting of you done by my legal team, is that
acceptable? She said yes and when would I be filling the position? I said
soon but no rush as Mason was around but will be working in a division. I
said, oh I forgot, there will be a drug test. She laughed and said of
course there will be. I thanked her for her time and said we will be in
touch and I don't leave people hanging.


I looked at the calandra and saw with the adjustment, I was now on time
and Kyle appeared in the door. He laughed and said so you having fun? I
said, Kyle I was are you going to fuck that up? He said, not at all just
an update. I said please start with Dillon? He said, well the promotion
was received with some initial resistance but he took it straight on and
dealt with it. I think there were a couple worried about their jobs. I
said, he better not fire anyone, we need everyone we have. Kyle laughed
and said, no worries he actually had 30 pizzas delivered the next day. I
laughed and said, I guess you taught him well. Kyle said, Mike that's
your move not mine.  Mike, he interview 15 people recommended 12 and I
will make offers to 10. I asked about the other 2 and Kyle said, drug
test. I said and how are you? He said, with Dillon taking all the general
stuff, he was good and the Purchasing people ordered the equipment we
needed and I said just send it to the strip district location. He said
that would be perfect. He asked if him and his wife could watch some of
the golf tomorrow and I said, I set up lunch on the patio. He said that
would be outstanding. I said when you wanted to eat ask for Clark the
club manager, it will be all set.


Kyle got up and left and I called Oakmont and made arrangements for Liam
and Cole and Dr. Williams and his wife. I looked at my schedule and saw
that I had ten minutes and Tim was next scheduled for 2 hours. I decided
to make a quick trip to the cafeteria and got an iced tea and went back
to the office and found Tim waiting for me? He smiled and said busy day?
I said, yes and I'm starving, you want to do this here or while we eat.
He said sorry dude, has to be here. I said, so that serious? He said no,
I just want you focused and if your hungry this will go faster. I said,
ok foundation first. We talked about the organization that he was
proposing and said that we need a meeting with the voting members.
Remember you don't have final say and you need to involve them. Then he
handed me a folder and said please sign as it transfers the 500k you
promised to include. I said thanks and signed and said well that makes it
legal and a nice tax deduction. Then it was a detailed review of trust
financials and I was warned that once project 2 started, I needed to go
slow. He said, in a worse case I would be down to somewhere over 2
million. We discussed the investments and I said I wanted increase my
holdings in Apple. He said, that was a good choice and made a few other
recommendations for changes. I asked about Enterprises and he said doing
great and making money. J & J was very busy and contributing a lot. The
rent payment from technologies was very helpful and that the Major was
paid thru the year. It was a long and intense meeting. As we were
finishing I asked about a background check on Riley Carson. He said no
problem, I handed his the resume and asked that he have Ruth make a copy
for him and to have her file the original. Then he said if you need
anything this weekend tough shit as he was going away and would deal with
anything on Monday, I said have a fun time and thanks.


Just then dad appeared and I looked at my calendar and laughed and said,
you actually made an appointment? He said, how the hell else was I going
to see you today. How you holding up? I said great but wondering why no
issues, everything is under control. He said, you seem to have things
going your way but I need a favor. Ok dad, so you set an appointment with
me to ask a favor? He said well it came up suddenly today so I figured
what the hell. Mike, Megan some how has Senate hearings scheduled, very
unusual so fast. Ok so I'm guessing you need a place to relax and prep?
He said yes and we were hoping that the place in the outer banks was
available. Dad I was planning on using it Easter week but you can have it
next week. I said, it rented all of May and pretty much through August. I
said, well I have a request? He said what's that? I said that you fill
Cole in on this and you leave about 4 cases of beer there? He said that
won't be enough, but who will be there? I said Cole, JJ, Sean and a
couple, of guys from VT. I added no woman. He said ok. Dad, I'm not
driving so an airplane will be involved. Dad said, ok have the Major set
it up and I'll pay, but I want you home Saturday night so we can have a
family dinner Easter Sunday. I said, please no surprises. He laughed and
said deal.


I checked the calandra and there was one item left which was the Union
President. I was right on time and he was waiting for me. I said hi
Marvin, sorry I'm running a little late as dad, pulled rank on my
calendar. He laughed and said he understood and we went into the
conference room. I asked if he needed a drink or coffee and he said that
he was fine. He said, he appreciated how easy I was to work with and that
his crews were very happy working for me. I said, that's really good to
hear, how would they like to continue on project two? He smiled and said
absolutely but I think a big favor is going to be asked. I said well I
would like to have your guys move to the second project the week after
they finish the current project. However I would like them to work thru
Standard Properties. He said who runs that? I said I do and Mason with be
the direct contact. I said the same terms and conditions as the first
project. He thought for a minute and said well I was waiting for
something like this, you want to save overhead? I said correct. He asked,
will there be other projects or is this a one and done? I said, honestly
that depends on how soon we rent the second building, I want Enterprises
on the top floor and that leaves the second and third floors to be rented
and I don't want Technologies in the second building. He said, well he
thought that we could work that out and he might have a tenant for the
third floor. We discussed the rough square footage and some general
terms. He asked who on my legal team should they work with and I said Tim
as Brian is legal for Technologies. We shook hands and he said he would
be to us mid next week. I thanked him and ask that there be nothing
leaked. He laughed and said, I'm not the Mayor. We shook hands and my
day was over.


I called Cole and asked if there was anything for dinner? He laughed and
said well dinner was an hour ago. I said ok, I'll be right home and I
drove to a McDonalds got a Big Mac, fries and an iced tea. I ate in the
parking lot and as I was finishing Carrie called and as I was on my way
home I let it go to voicemail. At home I went upstairs and found Cole and
I asked about his day and he said that after golf he hit a bunch of balls
and talked with his coach. He said, he had trouble with my score as he
thought it was too low for me on that course. He called the Club and said
the Pro was rude, saying that he had no idea what happened on the front
but the one under on the back was real and by the book and he hung up. I
said Cole what is your junior world ranking and he laughed and said, MJ I
have no idea. I laughed and said well we are going to find out tomorrow.


I was going to call Carrie and my phone rang and it was Oakmont. The Pro
said, Mike it seems that the guys tomorrow are not bringing Caddies, so I
was wondering if Cole wanted to caddie? I said well ask him yourself,
just hold a second. I handed Cole the phone and said this is for you. He
said hello and listened quietly and got a giant smile and said Fuck yes,
I mean sure. Sorry about that. He handed the phone back and I asked if
they could find out if Cole had a Junior World Rank? I was told that we
would talk tomorrow and that he did and that he should change coaches. I
asked if Liam was working tomorrow and he said he was the next call. I
said good night and we would see him tomorrow. Cole, your new buddy at
Oakmont thinks you need a new coach. He laughed and said we talked about
that this morning. He will talk with mom and dad.


Dad came in and I went to my room and called Carrie back, leaving dad to
talk with Cole. Carrie answering with well thanks for the call back. I
said no problem, what you been up to? She said she took a few days off to
decompress. I said that's nice and she asked where I was and I replied
at work all day. So Carrie, where were you decompressing? Mike, it's a
long story and I said well I have all night. She said, Mike don't be a
jerk and I said ok, babe good night and I hung up. Turned off my phone
and was looking at Riley's resume. It was very impressive and I knew I
had to talk with dad.To be honest I thought it would be good for me to
work with a woman.


I was laying in my bed relaxing and dad came up and said, Mike please
call Carrie. I said, ok turned my phone on. There were a bunch of
messages from Carrie. I call back and when she answered I said, ok what
the fuck do you want, 15 minutes ago you had nothing to say? She said
Mike, please listen. I said nothing and she started with, I spent the
last few days looking at schools? I said, well that's fine and thanks
for the heads up. So where did you go? She said Pitt and Notre Dame and
Michigan. So Carrie you tagged along with Jim and Ash? She said well
there was also a couple of others. I said well I hope you decide soon. By
the way I'm going with guys to the outer banks on spring break. Just
some guys from VT. There was no reply and I said, good night and hung up.
I said to myself, well this time she is breaking up with me on her own,
good for her. I went down stairs and dad was alone in his office and I
went in and sat down and lit a cigarette. He asked, is it over? I said,
I'm sure but she hasn't dumped me yet, well officially. She was looking
at schools, Michigan, Pitt and Notre Dame. Dad, she is accepted at VT and
she requested spring semester. That all happened because of me. Mike, you
will be better off with her somewhere else. I think she at some point
will find her way back to you, not sure that will work for you. Dad, I'm
going to let it play out but not for long. I put the cigarette out and
said good night. He said have fun.


I got to the door and said, dad we need to talk about Cole. He is also
going to caddie as the Pros decided to leave the tour guys at home. Also,
the people at Oakmont feel that he needs a new coach and has a ton of
potential. He shot one under today. Dad, they will be calling Megan and
Jay. He said, thanks for sharing. Then he said, you me and Cole for
dinner tomorrow. I said great but no country clubs. Dad said, I'll
figure something out. Now, get out of here.


Upstairs I found Cole and we discussed the day tomorrow and I asked
who's bag he was carrying? He said no idea, but if the opportunity
presented itself he would ask for Cupples. I said good night, I'll see
you at 6. He said fine and I went to my room. There was another call from
Carrie and I decided to return the call. She answered and I said, ok now
what? She asked if we could talk tomorrow and I said, no I was busy all
day. I'll see you in school. She said, Please. Carrie, I have a very
special day tomorrow so no. Well Mike, what about Sunday? Carrie, dad
just claimed that day. I simply can't. To be honest I don't give a fuck
what you think, I'm busy. So have a great weekend and I said good night
and hung up. I wanted to turn the phone off but needed the alarm. I went
and took a shower and jumped into bed and thankfully the phone was quiet.
I fell asleep immediately. At some point during the night, Cole woke me
saying I can't sleep. I moved over and he climbed in and was holding me

parked the car and went right to the Pro Shop and were told there would
be a meeting in the caddie room at 7:30. The meeting was very informal
and we were told what the Pros would expect generally. We were also told
that each was different and reminded that we should not be sharing with
anyone what was said or what went on. We were given assignments and as
expected I had Palmer and I have no idea how it happed but Cole drew Fred
Cupples. We were told to make sure the clubs were clean and to go to the
practice area. The first tee time was 10:00. There were tee spaces for
each Pro with a name placard. I noticed a growing crowd of people
watching and figured there must be a money making thing. I asked an
assistant pro and he said well there would be a charge to walk the
course? I asked how much and he said $100 per person. I asked him to
charge my account $200 and leave the passes for Dr. Williams and his
wife. He said no problem, they would be at the Pro Shop. Not seeing
Arnie, I went and called Kyle and left a message and told him about  the
passes and lunch. I would see him around 3:00 or so, if they were still
there.


Back at the practice area, there was still no activity. I check the clubs
and they were Calaways with leather grips. They were spotless and there
were about two dozen balls and I looked to, find where the golf gloves
were and was standing behind the bag, just chatting with other caddies.
Liam had the host Pro and he was very comfortable. Cole, looked a little
excited. Guys were looking at me and finally I was asked if I was
actually a member. I laughed and said yup. Just then all the Pros
appeared apparently straight from breakfast. I shook hands with Mr.
Palmer and he asked for a wedge and a glove and I immediately handed him
a glove and asked which wedge and he said he didn't care. Then we moved
to an an 8 iron and worked up to a driver. He didn't spend as long as
the others and we went to the putting green. On the way he asked about my
round yesterday and I said 8 over and I was filling out a course book. He
laughed and said and Cole blew you away? I laughed and said well he works
hard at it and I just play. He laughed and I handed him 4 golf balls and
he smiled and shook his head. The putting session was some work and a lot
of chat with the pros. On the first tee, I handed him a driver and stayed
out of the way. It was Ford, Palmer, Cupples and Mediate in the group. It
was a great group well for the bag jockeys. I walked a head and put the
bag down beside the ball which was left center of the fairway and took
out my book and figured 231 with pin in that damn front center. I figured
a 4 iron and it needed to be right side of pin or was toast. Palmer
arrived at the ball and I said 231, 15 feet front center, will not bounce
on and need to be 15 feet right. He said 4 iron which I already had in my
hand. He gave me that rye smile and I moved away. He hit a great shot
about 6 foot right and pin high and he rolled straight back and had a
12' up hill putt. I took the iron gave him the putter, cleaned the iron
and moved the bag to the back rough by the bridge. I looked at the putt
and thought right edge but don't give the hole away. Then l thought 2
inches outside right. While the others were playing I was asked what
about the putt and I said 2 or 2-1/2 outside right. He said 4 and I said
I'll look again. When it was our turn I looked and still thought I was
right. He didn't ask again and missed the putt on the right edge. Going
across the bridge I was thinking shit I was right. On the tee at #2 he
said 3 wood and I just handed him the club. It was a solid shot and in
the fairway, I looked it over and said 80 front 120 back 100 middle. He
smiled and said you forgot to say not past the pin and we both laughed.
It turned into a fun round with the pros laughing and having a good time.
Cole Liam and I were enjoying the experience. We cleaned the clubs and
put them in the requires spot and we checked in at the Pro Shop and Cole
and Liam were handed an envelope. Outside  I asked who wanted lunch? They
all agreed and I found Clark and we were seated outside, with a slight
comment about our dress. I simply said thanks.


While waiting for the food, I saw Kyle and his wife. They were seated
outside as it was a perfect Spring day. I was thanked for passes and
lunch. I asked how Joan was feeling and she said that it was going as
well as could be expected but she could not wait till September. Back at
the table Cole and Liam were laughing and chatting. As we were finishing
eating the Pro came over and said thanks guys and he asked if he could
join us for drinks. I said sure and a waiter appeared with three beers
and a scotch. I shook my head and said thanks. Then he said Cole when you
are finished I need a word with you. Cole said sure and it was a casual
conversation. Then Cole was asked if he happened to have clubs with him?
He said that he did not and I said well he plays the same clubs I do,
well except for 3/4 of an inch. The Pro got up and said please be at the
practice area is say 15 minutes. Once we were alone I said ok asshole
I'm watching this and Liam said I'm in as well.


At the range, there were my clubs and a couple of bags of balls and Cole
went over and started hitting Wedges to warm up. A few minutes later the
club Pro, Palmer and Cupples appeared and were watching. The Pro came
over and said, ok let's move to a 7 iron. Cole hit a few and they all
had a slight draw and were well hit. Then he was asked if he could hit a
fade with that club and Cole said, well sorta and he hit two. This
process continued moving to longer clubs. Then the big stick. Cole was
relaxed and hitting the ball well. The first drive was awful and was
never in the air above his waist. He shook his head laughed, put a ball
on the tee, went thru his pre shot routine and hit it about 310 with a
slight draw. Then he was asked to hit the same shot with a fade and damn
if he didn't. Then Palmer said, ok that enough cut the kid a break. We
joined the group and Cupples said, shit dude, how old are you? Cole said
well almost 16. Then he said ok, walk with me. They went in one direction
and we went back to the veranda. Palmer sat down with Liam and I and the
Pro went back to work as the course was open for members. We were just
chatting and I saw Cole and Cupples in a deep conversation sitting on a
nearby bench. They stood up, shook hands and Cole started towards us. I
asked Liam about his day and he said, it was fun but Mike, who the fuck
are you and how are you so comfortable in every situation. Cole heard
that and said, well talk about comfortable you should see the mess he is
in when his girl is around. His head is all scrambled eggs. I simply said
well it's actually worse around that pice of work and we all laughed. I
asked Liam to call me sooner than later and Cole and I started towards
the car.


We were pulling onto Hulton Road and Cole said, Mike thanks for the
clubs. He was quiet for a while and I laughed and said is that all you
have to say? He said Mike, rule 1 please, I need to think. As he remained
quiet I put some tunes on and he reached up and turned the noise down,
without saying a word. About halfway home he sat up in the seat and
asked, so MJ how was your day? I said shitty as you didn't clean my
clubs after you showed off. He smiled and said that's what the help
does, they are already clean and we both laughed. I said, my day was
great and that Liam kid is growing on me. Cole, so how was yours? He said
fantastic but no details until I sort all this out. Then he said I
didn't even know I had a Junior World ranking. I said care to share? He
said 132. I said is that good and he said not in my mind but it's the
highest ranking for a 15 year old. I changed the subject to Michele and
he lit up like a Christmas tree. He said awesome as she also found out
about my transfer next rear. We drove home listening to the tunes and
chatting.


At home I looked at my phone for the first time and there were 13 emails
and 11 voicemails, 5 of which were Carrie. I showed the phone to Cole and
he said well, you dad better order dinner as I have a lot to talk about
with the rents. Oh, you owe me a task. I smiled and said, I most
certainly do. Later dude. I went to my room, set the alarm for 30
minutes, put on my headphones and some classical music and laid in bed.
