It was yet another great weather day and I found Cole in the kitchen and
coffee was brewing and I asked if he was running today and he said,
fucking right, I need to plow off some some frustrations. The run started
off reasonably and Cole kept going faster and faster and we finished the
run in record time. We were sitting in the kitchen drinking coffee when
dad showed up and Cole announced that he was taking the day off as he
needed to chill. Dad looked at him and said, son no fucking way in hell
are you staying here alone, so get dressed and get to school. Cole took a
deep breath and said FINE and went upstairs. I looked at dad and he said,
Mike you too get to school and I'll see you at the office later and no
games. Just drop him off at school and make sure he goes inside, he is a
mess. Dad, how about I let him follow me at school today, they let that
happen for new students? Then I thought, well I'll let him follow Sam
and I'll bring him with me to work and you can get him to the doctors
appointment. Mike, thanks and that works. Upstairs I found Cole in the
shower and I jumped in and gave him a hug and he held me and said Mike
you are the best but please don't make me go to school today? I said
Cole, you are tougher than that so please get dressed and cut the drama.
In my room, I called Dr. Johnson and set up a shadow day for Cole and
explained the situation. He said he was aware of the pending transfer as
he had talked with Chuck Weston about it. Then he said Mike, if it helps
he can finish here, see if you can get his records sent over. I said
thanks and dressed and found dad. I explained the situation and asked him
to talk with Megan.


Cole came down and was in an awful mood. We filled the travel cups with
coffee and climbed into the new car. There was a slight smile as I put
the roof down. We were a block from home and Cole said Mike, where we
going? I laughed and said dad said you had to go to school, he didn't
say which one. Now there was a giant smile and the mood improved
instantly. I told him he would need to meet the Principal and that he
would be following Sam around all day and that if he played his cards
right he might be enrolled at my school tomorrow. I added that he might
have to kiss a few asses to get that done, especially his mom's. I
parked the car, put the roof up and we went to the school office and I
introduced Cole to the Principal and went to class. That lasted one
period and I was called to the Office. Dr. Johnson said he had called
Cole's school and that everyone agreed that he should finish here. His
grades are outstanding and even if he didn't do another thing he would
easily pass. His finals would be sent here and he could take them when
they arrived. He would be required to just monitor classes and that
Sam's schedule would be good to follow. Then he said Mike, he was being
harassed every minute he was in school and that they couldn't do
anything as it was passive. Simply the entire building ignored him. He
was simply shunned. I thought, I'm going to kill him for not asking for
help. I said thanks and went back to class.


I was barely functioning but looking forward to lunch. I muddled through
the morning and was glad to just sit alone in study hall and I was just
staring straight ahead and thinking. At lunch Cole was sitting with Sam
and his buddies and JJ asked, what the fuck is going on? I gave him the
cliff notes and he said, so it is a drinking weekend? I said nope, just

around. I laughed and went to let Cole know we would be leaving at 1:30

was again unfocused and decided to call Dr. Drennan for an appointment

In the parking lot Cole was standing by the car and again I put the roof
down and we drove to the office. He laughed out loud when he saw my

from now own. I just shook my head. Inside, I took Cole on a quick tour
and when we got to my office, I introduced him to Ruth and then I went in
the office and turned the computer on and Ruth asked, what I was drinking
and I asked for iced tea and she looked at Cole and said, you drinking
the same thing? He said, yes please and Ruth smiled. I had thing to do
and Cole sensing that said he was going to explore some more. Just then
my desk  phone rang and it was dad, asking that I come to his office. I
thought shit, and when I got there I said well good afternoon Sam. He
stood up and shook my hand and said well we at the Giant Eagle are
thrilled to be working with you guys. AP speaks very highly of you and
your dad is  one hell of a salesman. By the way, you play a great game of
golf. I laughed and said, well it is just a game to me. He laughed and
said, well if you ever need a job, give me a call. I laughed and said,
have a great day. I went back to the office and called Kyle and asked if
he had a minute, he said sure and I said, I'll come to you. He said
thanks and I told Ruth, I'll be right back.


Kyle was in his office and Dillon was there as well. I asked if I was
interrupting something and was told just our daily meeting. I laughed and
asked about the new project and Dillon said Mike, we moved people around
and it's fine, well for now. Then Kyle said Mike, what he means is that
he moved people around and that this will blow up into a lot more, you
need to stop playing golf with important people. I laughed and said, who
knew. Mike you and your dad are a dangerous team and one of the two of
you need to slow unless you can train more tech workers. I laughed and
said, should I add a employment firm to the Enterprise mess? He said, god
no. I asked Dillon if he was good for a late lunch/early dinner. He said,
well I am but you have Mason scared shitless. I smiled and said I know
but it will be good.


Back at my office Cole was sitting in a chair and asked if I would take
him to the construction site, some time? I said sure but you need to see
dad and get to you head doctor appointment. He said, thanks and enjoy
dinner. Oh and eat healthy. Cole, you and I are going to have a long talk
tonight and while I hope you are doing better, your inability to let me
hover has me pissed off. Simply ask for help when you need it, brothers
don't make brothers figure things out. He smiled and said, I didn't
know that as I've never had a brother. I said well I did and he never
asked for help and look what happened to him. So Mike, is that why your
dad insisted on me not being alone today? I said Cole, I believe so now
get going. I see you tonight and figure out the weekend thing.


As soon as Cole left, Ruth appeared with my clothes on a hanger and said,
you need to get ready. I said thanks and told her she was the best. I
closed the office door and changed into my suit which was light grey and
perfectly tailored. The shirt was a pale blue and the tie was a grey and
red striped thing, I made a note to look for ties. The shoes and belt
were nondescript black. I was sitting at my desk with the jacket hanging
over the chair working when Riley appeared. She had a very nice business
suit on and looked at me and said, well you certainly look like a young
executive. We went to the car and she said, if you put the roof down,
I'm not going. I laughed and said, as you wish. While on the short drive
I told her that I had no idea how I got in this place and she said,
really? I said that's correct, I don't. She said well Tim set it up and
they are thrilled that you are making an appearance. Mike, you have more
influence around this town than you know and more money than most of the
people here tonight and 2 of the 3 construction projects in town. Then
she said, I can't wait to see you in action. We pulled up in the front
of the club and a valet helped Riley out of the car, I handed him the
keys and a 10 and said, careful it's new. He said yes sir and welcome to
the Duquesne Club. Inside, I gave my name and said we had reservations.
We were immediately seated and a waiter immediately asked for our drink
order and she ordered a wine and I asked for an Arnold Palmer. While we
were waiting the manager came up and said, Mr. Simmons it is a pleasure
to meet you and welcome, we hope to see more of you. I said thanks and we
were talking and then it started, a guy came up introduced himself and
said, he wanted to meet me as I had become a pain in his ass as Standard
Properties was becoming a player and he wanted to meet the brains behind
that company. I laughed and said well it nice to meet the competition.
Then the Mayor came over and sat down and I was instantly pissed off. He
said Mike, whose the date? I said well Mr. Mayor, Riley works for me and
this is a business dinner and you are interfering. He got up and said
Mike, we need to talk about your second project and your attitude. I said
Pete, we don't need to talk at all. Just stay out of the way and enjoy
the economic bump, it might help your run for Governor, or not. He left
with his tail between his legs and Riley looked at me and said, so you
don't like him? I said, he is ok just always wants something. The drinks
came and we continued chatting and I was interested about what she was
into for fun and her interests both inside and outside of work. There was
a boyfriend of 2 years and a best friend she shared an apartments with,
located in Shadyside. She stayed fit by running, usually after work in
Shelley Park. She was doing the same and the banter was fun. It appeared
that after I dispatched the Mayor people got the idea we wanted left
alone. We ordered dinner and she had halibut and rice and a salad. I

gone she laughed and said, darn I was sure it was a steak. I laughed and

We ate with no interruptions but once we were finished eating it started
up. I just dealt with each of them and referred them to various company
people and asked two of them to contact Riley, during work hours. There
was one guy that interested me as he was a lobbyist to the legislature
and I asked him to call me Thursday afternoon and gave him my personal
number. Riley asked what that was about and I said, not sure but I liked
the guy and he has contacts I might need. We both passed on desert and
ordered cappuccinos. Just before we were ready to leave the Manager came
up and handed me an envelope and said Mike, some membership information.
I said thanks and we went outside and retrieved the car and I gave the
guy a 20 and said, thanks for keeping the scratches off. On the way back
to the office, Riley asked if I was going to join? I said, the place is
nice but the real movers are at Oakmont. Seems like everyone here is an
employee, well an important employee, and their membership is paid for by
their company. She just listened. I dropped her off at the office and

tunes on and drove home.


At home, I found Cole sitting in my chair outside with a beer and I
almost lost it when I saw a cigarette. I grabbed a beer, pulled a chair
up beside him and sat silently till he said Mike, don't be pissed but I
changed head doctors and it Dr. Drennan. I said fine but put the fucking
cigarette out and he said, not happening, it relaxes me. I thought one
battle at a time. Ok so why the change? Mike I simply need a guy to talk
with, not another mom and they agreed. Mike, he sounds a lot like you and
that helps. I said dude, I am not and will never be your head doctor. He
laughed and said, dude more than you know and I love you for it. I
laughed and asked, so you any better? He said Mike, I am if I can get the
school change done, I'll do anything and I'm waiting for a rent to call

home. I just sat there silently drinking the beer and then I remembered
that I needed to call Dr. Drennan as well so I made the call with Cole
sitting there. The appointment was for Friday, mid afternoon. I was
relaxing and there was a clap of thunder and I thought, shit did I put
the roof up? I went outside and sure enough I had to put it up. When I
went back Cole was on the phone and I turned to leave and he indicated
that I should stay. It was a calm conversation with his mom. It seemed to
be going in a direction that Cole was comfortable with. It went on for a
while and I sensed Cole was getting tense. Then he exploded and he
yelled, I HAVE FUCKING PLANS THIS WEEKEND AND YOU CAN TELL HIM IT TAKES
MORE THAN HAVING SEX WITH A WOMAN TO BE A FATHER. Then he said, Mom I

They are clueless about me unless you tell them what to do.


We sat silently for a while and he got another call and he answered

and asked if he was hungry? He said yes and that he would grab a sandwich
but he just sat there and lit another cigarette. I shook my head and went
inside and made him a damn sandwich and I grabbed another beer and put
his sandwich on the table beside him and went to my room.


I had just settled in and dad was on the phone. He immediately asked
about Cole and I had to admit that I didn't know and that the only thing
I was sure of is that he is furious with his dad and that he changed head
doctors and we now shared the same guy. He said he need a guy and not
another mom. I asked dad to please call Jay and that I would call Megan.
He said fine and asked about dinner? I said it was good but that I was
not a fan of the club and that we could talk tonight. He said thanks and
that he would be home soon. I immediately returned Megan's call and when
she answered I asked what Cole's issue was with Jay. She said, well that
was most likely over due and something must have come up with the new
doctor. I said well we now share the same shrink and he is a good guy,
well for me. Megan you and Jay have to figure this out. Cole had a good
day with Sam at my school and was good at the office. Then I came home to
him on the deck, in my chair with a beer and a cigarette. She was silent
for a minute and then she said Mike, think about that for a minute, what
would you have done? I took a deep breath and said, the same fucking
thing. She replied, exactly. I said Megan he needs to be Cole not me and
she said, correct and he is more like you every time we talk. I said damn
what the fuck didn't you say something? I'll see you Sunday. Oh tell
Jay to man the fuck up and I hung up.


I called Dr. Drennan's office and left a message that it was very
important that I talk with him ASAP. The call was returned within 5
minutes and I said, Doc I understand Cole is now you patient, is that
correct? He said Yes. Ok I need help here and know you can't say
anything but I need to know, he it trying to be like me, if that is
correct change the subject. He replied Mike, we have an appointment on
Friday. I said thanks one more question, same rules. Should I have a long
talk with him? Mike, I'll see you Friday. I said thanks and hung up. I

NOW. I minute or two later he came in with a beer and a cigarette and I

have work to do.

I called Tim and we discussed dinner and the Club. I told him I was even
more impressed with Riley and that it was a great relaxing dinner and we
grilled each other out who we were and what we liked. Then I added she
discovered I don't like the Mayor and Tim said SHIT, why couldn't you
avoid poking that bear? I said because it needed poked and it kept the
minions away from the table. He laughed and said there is a price for
that? Then I said well I'm not impressed with the Club so I won't be
joining. He laughed and said, well that ship has sailed as Brian and I
applied for you and the dues check went out this afternoon. You need to
be there and you will have a business lunch there once a month, we are
not discussing it. He said Mike, enjoy the rest of you evening and thanks
for not hanging up. I laughed and said good night.


I was determined to stay in my room as it was an intense day and I was
getting increasingly stressed. School work was out so I called JJ. He
answered in Spanish and I not today, please. I just need to talk with a
sane person. He laughed and said he would be right over. I said, just
stop in the kitchen and grab a couple of beers and I'm hiding out in my
